Video: Kerry Aplogizes "To No One"

He continues claiming that somehow he was making the joke that if kids don't study hard, they're doomed to grow up to become President of the United States.

He's definitely taking a page from the netroots with his tough, strong (crazy) talk.

Update: In case anyone's keeping track of educational credentials, both Kerry and Bush attended Ivy League Yale, and Bush edged Kerry on grades.

Update: Michelle Malkin catches moonbat AP reporter Jennifer Loven, wife of Democratic operative, spinning to make Kerry's "I was trying to scare kids into studying lest they become President" claim by Dowdifying his remarks to make a reference to Bush immediately poceed his denigration of his ~~fellow soldiers~~ not-quite-our-class-dear social inferiors.

Remember When I Said Kerry's Ludicrous Denial Would Keep The Story Alive? I was wrong.

I forgot the MSM had a terrific option when it comes to stories that can't be spun to the Democrats' advantage -- embargo them entirely.

....I cannot tell you how proud I am to be the Commander-in-Chief of such incredibly brave men and women who have volunteered to wear the uniform of the United States. And even in the midst of a heated campaign season, there are still some things we should all be able to agree on – and one of the most important is that every one of our troops deserves our gratitude – and respect. Yesterday Democrat Senator John Kerry was speaking to a group of young people in California, and gave them this advice, quote: “You know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t you get stuck in Iraq.”

The Senator’s suggestion that the men and women of our military are somehow uneducated is insulting and shameful. Our troops did not enlist because they did not study hard in school or do their homework. The men and women who serve in our all-volunteer Armed Forces are plenty smart and are serving because they are patriots – and Senator Kerry owes them an apology.

Whatever party you belong to, whatever you think about the war in Iraq, we should all agree that our troops deserve our unwavering support. And when it comes to supporting our men and women in uniform, I don’t have any doubt where Mac Collins is going to land. He is a strong supporter of the military. And he knows what I know: Any time you have American troops in harm’s way, they have the right to expect the full support of the American government.

I was dismayed to hear your recent comments about our military men and women in Iraq, suggesting that they are stuck there because they're uneducated, perhaps because they didn't work hard at their studies. I write to demand an immediate apology from you in light of those comments.

On October 30, 2006 at an appearance in California on behalf of Phil Angelides’ Governor Campaign, your comments were truly despicable and offensive. It's a slap in the face of all of our intelligent, dedicated, brave men and women in the military. Of course, there are many of these from Louisiana, whom I have the honor to represent. I take particular offense on behalf of them.

I interact with our fine military regularly, particularly those from Louisiana. I'm always struck by their courage, dedication, AND intelligence. It's an objective fact that our military today is better educated and trained than ever before. In light of this obvious reality, your comments suggest that either you don't interact with today's military in any significant way or, even more troubling; you have a basic and deep-seated contempt for them.

They aren't stupid, uneducated, or lazy. They're heroes. And they deserve your immediate apology.

15 Sometimes the embargo works, but sometimes it just lets a story build up a critical mass of outrage, so that it eventually circumvents the MSM wall. When that happens, responses on the Left sound even more strained and defensive (think Swift Boat Vets).

Like him or not, when McCain called for an apology from Kerry, he put Kerry in a no-win situation. It's really already too late to apologize, but McCain's demand for an apology means that the story won't just go away in a day or so. It will fester like a wound on the Democrats, as all candidates are forced to either back up Kerry's lame denial or refute Kerry and support the troops. If even one Dem in a close race does this, it makes it harder for the next person to pretend that Kerry wasn't insulting the troops with his remarks.

At the least, the gaffe takes Democrats off message at the worst possible moment, when the 90% of the voting public who are not political junkies are starting to pay attention.

Yeah, but - he's Kerry. The difference between Kerry outright lying, and Kerry being too much of an arrogant prick to admit he screwed up, is small.

I'll put it to you this way: let's imagine, just for the sake of argument, that it *was* intended to be a joke about Bush (and crew) being dumb, lazy, whatever.

How would you expect him to have acted, differently than how he has acted? (Keeping in mind that this is KERRY we're talking about, not an actually talented speaker, good politician, non-asshole, etc.)

Wicked & Knemon, I don't see how you can say this was a joke about the Pesident gone wrong. The "study hard & do your homework" line doesn't wash because they are both pretty much equally educated (with Bush earning the higher grades I understand), the work hard line doesn't apply because if anyone has been more sucessful in their careers it would have to be the President (Kerry's only accomplishments that I'm aware of are being elected the the Senate & marrying a rich widow)

This was clearly a (if I may borrow a phrase) "Textbook" Democrat attempt to stir up class envy & hatred.
