"V" Returns as... Anti-Obama Allegory?
— Ace

The trailer looks decent, even if it does crib the "Excuse me?" moment from Frost/Nixon.

If you somehow missed the strangely cautionary messaging about Obama, let Allah enlighten you.

Words to focus on: Change, Hope, and Devotion to a supposed savior.

Barack Obama, Reptoid? In case you don't know, there's a strange subterranean crazy conspiracy theory postulating that most of the world's leaders are in fact "Reptoids," lizard-like vampiric aliens which can disguise themselves as humans. Confirmed Reptoids include Bill Clinton, George Bush, Queen Elizabeth, and Kris Kristopherson, and no, I didn't throw in that last name as a jokey change-up. He really is named as a Reptoid in the, um, literature.

David Icke is the, err, principle architect of this, err, theory. In fact, it appears he just cribbed the whole notion from the original V.

So: Is Obama a "Reptoid"?

In what appears to be a PR decision, Obama has been provisionally dubbed not a Reptoid, at least until his popularity rating comes down a bit. Wouldn't want to anger the many crazy people who voted for Obama, after all.

However...

. In a case of "you got your sci-fi in my conspiracy theory", they call this the new world order, and 9/11 was most definitely involved. Obama comes in somewhere too, but shockingly he actually isn't a reptoid! Instead he seems to be one of their puppets, and he is hope-nitizing us all (hypotizing with hope).

The Firefly Curse? Gee, I thought the hot-ish alien spokeslady/spokeslizard looked familiar. It's Inara from Firefly.

Which makes it likely V will be canceled shortly.

1 Don't worry. I'm sure at the conclusion of the first season we'll learn that humanity caused the V's to arrive because of global warming, intergalactic racism, or some other PC bugbear.

2 Anti-Obama Allegory

Doubtful. Wasn't the original supposed to be anti-Reagan on more or less the same lines? It's kind of just an in power thing I think.

More importantly....Morena Baccarin and Elizabeth Mitchell*? Who cares about Obama, allegories or lizards. BUNK!

(they aren't exactly Jane Badler and Faye Grant. Okay, mostly Badler but my 14 year old self not withstanding, they'll do)

3 Jesus, what did they do to Morena Baccarin? She looked about 46 times hotter on Firefly.

Posted by: Waterhouse at May 20, 2009 11:31 AM (Gd3S5)

4 True, and that's hinted at in the trailer. However, the "global warming crisis" would seem, in this fictive universe, best explained as a contrivance by the aliens themselves which is then used as a pretext for their taking over the earth.

From the review at this site explaining the plot:

http://tinyurl.com/o27ola

Calling themselves The Visitors, their leader Anna (Firefly's Morena Baccarin) quickly makes contact with Earth's leaders to deliver a message (in multiple languages) proclaiming that they come in peace and, in exchange for the use of Earth's water which they need to survive, they will provide the human population with technology, the curing of 65 different diseases, and universal health care.

I'm pretty sure the real message is:

Don't trust anyone offering "Universal Health Care"... because they're aliens and are looking to kill you of course.

How didn't you get that as the message?  It seems obvious to anyone who reads the description of the plot and storyline.

I second that EXACT sentiment.  BSG and Lost are the reasons I no longer bother with serial tv.

I tend to agree. BSG totally jumped the shark. Lost I still like, but it's not as good as it was and has gotten too crazy.

They just won't let high-rating shows die until they've milked every ounce. And, this being the very nature of the business, so few have any idea how they're going to end the story when they start. And they screw things up so badly with directionless padding (and direction changes) to fill seasons in between, there's no damn way out.

71 Reptoid aliens have been using us as a food resource for thousands of years. They came from Earth originally. The aliens cause wars and plagues to start every 30 to 50 years to generate a large supply of meat. The government knows about it but keeps quiet to avoid public panic. The military has taken some defensive measures: HAARP, advanced space warcraft, deep space and global surveillance satellites, and hunter-killer satellites. And loser reptoids like palin steele are ripe for the picking. Have fun morons.

If you haven't seen Firefly, then you're in for a treat.

If you can see it, don't watch the episodes in the order that they aired.  There's a two-parter in there that was supposed to be first.

81 @77 entropy

I don't quite recall that. Is that the episode where they pick up the, um, dead body as cargo?

No.  It's the one that establishes all the backstory  and has Tam and the preacher joining the ship as passengers.

There were references to the war in the opening credits and throughout the other episodes.  I think the first episode I saw opened with Reynolds' picking a bar fight with alliance supporters on the anniversary of the end of the war, and it left me with the impression that he was a scamp justifying his lifestyle with mild irritation at having fought on the losing side.  The flashbacks to Serenity Valley in the two-part episode set me straight.

As for the libertarian stuff, the theatrical movie spelled that out in letters eleventy feet high, and the fact that a moonbat like Whedon could get it so "right" makes a strong case that the left is more evil than stupid.

96 It should be known that Alan Tudyk (aka Wash from Firefly) is in "V".

It looks like he is playing Elizabeth Mitchel's sidekick in the FBI.

So yes...expect the Firefly Curse to strike like the wrath of God!

97 Meh, you whiners can whine all you want about the head lizardlady's hair... I dig women with pixie haircuts, even alien ones with fake skin that really hide scales. If she showed up in a giant spaceship, I'd be the first to sign up to process the rest of you into food for our new reptillian overlords. And I'd do so with a song in my heart and nekkid pictures of her on my wall.

Of course, I'd also demand a really awesome giant screen TV as the price for my loyalty. The visitors' giant-screen TV technology is obviously far superior to humans'.

Posted by: Evil Otto at May 20, 2009 04:04 PM (ur8b3)

98 Well, Dollhouse survived the Firefly curse that should have been brought on by Alan Tudyk--maybe just because he only appeared in 2 eps.

Seriously guys, the reason for the haircut, (even though all guys seem to love long hair, regardless whether it is flattering), is because she has such a pretty face. It is how you show off the features, like the great eyes and cheekbones. Hallie Berry looks almost ordinary with long hair, for goodness sakes. When she was a Bond girl with the hot orange bathingsuit and short pixie, even straight chicks like me thought she looked rawkin'.

Show looks fair from trailer, prolly will suck.

Posted by: Cthulhu at May 20, 2009 04:29 PM (2jHgK)

101 I don't know, I get the feeling we're being set-up for a situation where it turns out that the aliens really were giving us a good deal, but we screwed it up with all our bitter clinging to guns and religion. I just can't trust something with this kind of exposure to not go that way.

Posted by: RL at May 20, 2009 04:38 PM (XwH7i)

102 Y'know, if you put the alien overlord lady in a lace wig, it would make her look even sexier.

No. Seriously no.

I will concede that yes, I admit, I love long hair, regardless of whether it's 'flattering'. Some girls pull off short hair better then others, and some very much.

But that shit don't work for her. She has a gorgeous face but the tinker bell haircut doesn't work for her at all.

I had dismissed this when I heard about it. Now I'll have to check it out. It has Monaca Baccrin (Inara, Firefly) in it. Short hair, long hair, doesn't matter, she's a hottie. Plus that trailer wasn't bad. The potential is there which means its probably doomed.

117 > ...in exchange for the use of Earth's water ... Ahhh, crap. That's such a stupid premise - that why I stopped watching the original series. Water, if it's not the most common chemical compound in the universe, has to be right up there. All you need is hydrogen (90% or so of the universe) and oxygen. And, if you can send 28 gargantuan starships to Earth, the engineering challenge of making water doesn't seem all that great. Even if you don't want to make it, there's thousands of GIGATONS of water on comets orbiting around out solar system. Probably there system as well. Why go through all the drama of fooling the humans when all the water you want is floating around in space? Such a shame. The trailer psyched me up.
