— Ace The state is hungry. It needs feeding.
But the chairman of the presidents Council of Economic Advisers admitted that health reform and a growing economy isnt enough to bring down the deficit. She did mention one other place that revenue could come from: letting the Bush tax cuts expire.[James Pethokoukis]: Since Obama already wants to get rid of the income and capital gains tax cuts for wealthier Americans that expire at the end of 2010, clearly what Romer is referring to is the rest of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts. Letting all the 2001 cuts rate reductions, child tax credit marriage penalty relief expire would raise tax revenues by $2.5 trillion through 2019.
Oh my. If only we had had some kind of warning about this. If only we had a few uneducated, boorish, stupid, wolf-hunting/unlicensed-plumbing type people who were so comfortable in their Being There sort of retarded purity they could sounded alarm bells and asked the media to inquire into The Socialist's actual agenda and worldview.

Yeah, except no it wouldn't. It would decrease revenues, just as the Bush cuts raised revenues because they led to a boom economy.
We're going to have even fewer obs, fewer business successes, and fatter pork slobs. That's good for Obama, but bad for us.

We all know this, though. Obama knows it too. He's trying to create as many government jobs as he can, because those buggers will vote democrat. If he has to delete 3 private jobs to create 1 government one, that's a bargain for him. And that's the main consequence of these taxes.
I admit, if the government is going to spend this much, it's only honorable that it taxes this much. If they had to tax for what they spent, every year, I do not think we would have this kind of leadership.
They should make everyone pay their share of government spending for that year, every year. I would prefer this were not some progressive graduation, but something more like a sales tax or a flat tax, but regardless, everyone should pay taxes, and the haul should equal the spending as closely as possible. If there are errors, that should be fixed quickly. If we did this, each dollar would double in value, people would have much better lives, and China would care what we thought.

Except you can't be, as others have already inferred. If you try the populist schtick, you end up damaging the economy, killing jobs, and export corporate hq's abroad. Money and progress seek to be rewarded not punished.
The Left in the US are usually saved by voting public who awaken every 12 years to kick them out and let the economy recover a bit before going back to sleep.
We can recover from this if the GOP starts kicking ass and produces some leadership. Those things are dependent upon us kicking the GOP's collective ass first.

1. Cut taxes
2. Spur economy
3. Profit!
Why can't everyone get this? Rich people have money, make it possible for them to make more money. Collect taxes (albeit a lower rate) on the money spent. It works every time!
Unlike certain health care proposals.

Letting all the 2001 cuts rate reductions, child tax credit marriage penalty relief expire would raise tax revenues by $2.5 trillion through 2019.
If that 2.5 is based on the laughable WH economic growth estimates (which, oh by the way, assumed that the tax cuts would remain--AHEM), then the true figure would be somewhere way the hell south of that. And let's remember that a better estimate of the cumulative deficit over the next decade is around 14 trillion, therefore this is just another empty measure to prove that he's not Bush (Hey! Let's bow to the shift manager at McDonald's next.).

Meh. Yes, Congress sucks and they certainly enabled people to live way beyond their means for some time. So, I don't want to downgrade the importance of that point.
But there's still a matter of personal responsibility that a lot of people overlook. Maybe if I didn't have to watch these lowlifes that guy is talking about, every single freaking day, mooching off others and expecting a hand out, I'd agree with you 100%. But it's the desire of a lot of people (and a lot of people I personally know) in this country right now to get a free lunch on everything. Way too many people think they should be able to spend their money on all their various wants and that someone else should have to pick up the tab on their needs; because it's "their right" to a decent wage and housing and food, etc.

Nope. That's missing out on a whole lot of revenue.
Just make it a requirement that anybody engaging in the activity get certified and licensed. Oh, and renew the license yearly, after paying for a requisite amount of CE course credits.
Of course you can save yourself all of this hassle so long as you can prove to the IRS that you've spent a mandatory minimum in the state run brothels in lieu of "self help".
Oh, and since we can fit this under the rubric of health care we will subsidize this need to the tune of $365 per year per person. Which will make you a government health care worker, so, don't forget to fork over $400 to the SEIU for your dues.

Our debt situation is so dire now that tax increases are inevitable, no matter which party is in power.
This is the one argument I'm sick of hearing. TAX increases are not necessary, what is necessary is REVENUE increasing to meet the debt. Sadly, no one in government seems to understand that 10% of $1B is more than 20% of $300M. They keep thinking they can raise the tax rate and people won't respond.

Less than $500 per year?
That's outrageous!
I'm calling a stike!
All together now!
We're out of the office and onto our feet
We're off of our asses and out in the street
So put on the heat, out in the street,
Cuz Union meat can never be beat!
As long as it takes.

If only we had a few uneducated, boorish, stupid, wolf-hunting/unlicensed-plumbing type people who were so comfortable in their Being There sort of retarded purity they could sounded alarm bells and asked the media to inquire into The Socialist's actual agenda and worldview.
Ace, this sentence is pure gold!

And finally, Mrs. Richard Durbin...
I see a pattern here, and with many of Obama's appointees, too. They have self-image issues they are trying to overcome by controlling and shaking-down beautiful people like me. The good news is that their self-image is quite healthily realistic. Oops, fuck - that's the bad news, too!
(Wait, this isn't one of them "telescreen" things is it?)
Posted by: sherlock at November 17, 2009 03:32 PM (ktKOD)
I was trying to type "self" followed by "-image" in two places in my comment above, but instead got a BF underline thingy.
Shit, maybe this is a telescreen?
Posted by: sherlock at November 17, 2009 03:35 PM (ktKOD)
AHA! If you type a "-" followed by "image" you get ____. You know what that means don't you!!?
Yeah, a telescreen.

Not even an adjustment in the tax rates, just the withholding rates. Short term, people got a little extra in their paychecks, long term, they get screwed 4/15/10. Of course it was Poon or someone else said that these were indeed tax cuts. So did the CNN scrunt who was trying to sell the Bambi/Botox stimulus package.

"Letting all the 2001 cuts rate reductions, child tax credit marriage penalty relief expire would raise tax revenues by $2.5 trillion through 2019."
If all the people who were working in 2001 still had jobs, that statement would have a chance of being true. Reality based life forms have noticed that the economy and employment have taken a hit over the past few years. I'm going to ignore the "Bush's fault/Democratic Congress" blame game, because it doesn't matter.
Letting these cuts expire will NOT raise the promised revenue. Government spending must be reduced. Since we know that cannot be allowed, we are doomed.
