— Ace ...according to a doctor (not one treating him, just asked for comment), whose opinion is now deleted from a WaPo article.
Dr. Keith Siller, director of the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center at NYU Medical Center and assistant professor at the NYU School of Medicine, said it is unusual for a patient to be sedated after brain surgery for more than a few days."The two-week period is longer than I would be happy with," he said.
Question: Why was this quote deleted? Did they get the quote wrong? Did they discover Dr. Keith Siller was not an expert on the subject? Or did they just decide they didn't want to add fuel to the low-heat fire to remove Johnson from the Senate and thus imperil Democratic control?
Remember when I suggested a Schiavo-Johnson comparison? Mickey Kaus credits Tim Noah as being the "only" person with "the balls" to speculate on a "partisan do-si-doh" on Johnson, with liberals now believing so long as you're alive, you're alive.
Well, he's an idiot and he wasn't the first.
Actually, he doesn't knock liberals. It's Kaus who more-evenhandedly suggests a change in position by both sides.
Noah, an absurd hack, of course sees this through the prism of conservative hypocrisy only, wondering if Tom DeLay would support legislation to prevent a feeding tube being removed from Tim Johnson, should it come to that.
Well, that's jackass; how about looking at the liberal hypocrisy? Are liberals now maintaining that someone who as of yet demonstrates no motor, speech, or other higher brain activity can remain a sitting Senator?
Terry Schiavo was in much worse shape, as I've said, but the issue there was only if she should be permitted to live, not permitted to continue "serving" as a US Senator in a seriously impaired state.
So there's not really any conservative hypocrisy on this. We pressed to keep Terry Schiavo alive, not to put her in charge of, say, the TSA.
Although, seriously, she wouldn't have been worse than the current regime.

Screw that! There's rethuglican hordes to keep at bay! Breathing? Alive enough to pass legislation we favor, and therefore alive enough to allow federal intervention if neccessary.

Considering that's not what DeLay did in congress, I am always saddened by how liberal lies become memes people repeat without thinking. Tim Blair is doing his best to demolish the Plastic Turkey lie, but it still makes the rounds.
The problem is that leftists have a faith, not a philosophy. The positions they hold aren't based on reason and fact, they are based on belief, hope, and repeated dogma.

From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader:
“Senator Johnson’s overall general medical condition has improved and he is gradually being weaned from the sedation,” Dr. Vivek Deshmukh, a neurosurgeon at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, said Thursday. “He is opening his eyes and is responsive to his wife.”

I wonder how we will intuit his voting on bills from a bit of blinking and eye movement?

Or if it becomes public that Johnson and his wife discussed any type of DNR plan.
If the senator is as bad as I suspect, the family and staff will not be able to hide it for much longer.

Yes, I know we're talking about the fanatical left where logic isn't a strong point, but there's still no way to keep him in office. Still, we should all be praying for him and hoping for him to return to health. He's far from the worst of the bunch in Congress. Now if this happened to Tubby Teddy, well, all bets are off.
Happy New Year!

From Senator Johnson's website, March 28, 2005:
"Terry Schiavo's sad and tragic case should, among other things, remind us all of the important voluntary option of having a simple living will to give direction and clarity to a person's wishes concerning end-of-life medical procedures."
You have to wonder if Sen. Johnson followed through on this in his personal affairs.
And if so, does his living will include a clause about "unless control of the Senate hangs in the balance"?
Posted by: JavaMan at December 31, 2006 06:03 PM (8s/zO)
You're wrong. A Senator can leave four ways:
1) Lose an election
2) Die
3) Step down
4) Be impeached
#1 can't happen 'til 2008 (although I don't think South Dakotans will be happy with Dems playing games).
#2 won't happen with the type of medical care he's receiving.
#3 can't happen if he's incapacitated.
#4 won't happen with a Democrat-controlled Senate.
So unless #2 happens, Senator Johnson is going nowhere.

I'd guess yes. But we may never know. I wouldn't put it past the DNC to put pressure on Mrs. Johnson to keep everything hush-hush.
When Mel Carnahan was killed in the plane crash, the DNC had no problem recruiting his wife, Jean, as one of their minions.

My dad suffered a burst aneurysm in 2003. He survived the brain surgery but developed a serious lung infection. He was kept sedated for a month. He then had intensive rehab. Sadly, he succombed to another blood clot three weeks later.
My point is this: if Sen Johnson cares anything for his family, nevermind his state, he'll resign to devote himself to his rehab. He will not be able to serve in the Senate for months.
I wish him every success, but I hope he does the right thing.

1) The DNC has dispatched a special team to Africa to search for the Zombie Virus. They hope to have Sen. Johnson up and running as soon as he's dead.
ex. "All in favor of the motion will say 'aye'.
"Aye."
Sen Johnson: "Brains!"
"The ayes have it."
2) In the event Sen Johnson lives, but is incapacitated. The DNC has dispatched a special team to Spain to recruit Senor Wences. The secret DNC lab has developed a special chair for the Senator which will conceal Senor Wences and a special glove for anal insertion, which Senor Wences will wear on his right hand.
Ex: "All in favor of the motion will say'aye'."
"Aye."
Sen Johnson: "Sa'rite!"
"The ayes have it."
Unfortunately, under scenario 2 Senator Johnson will have to starting wearing lipstick.

That is true. The sons of bitches wouldn't hesitate to do it to our guys. It sucks that we don't give what we get, but that would make us too much like them, and that's no good. I'm a mean nasty hard-hearted fucker myself, but on my worst pissed off drunken rages I couldn't produce the vile shit the left dishes up in normal conversation. Well, OK I could, but in my heart I'd feel bad even if I was too proud to retract it.

If I were Joe, I would have following conditions for Dems to get my vote:
1. Harry Reid should take my dog out for a walk everyday. He should not use a pooper-scooper or even gloves to clean up after the dog, because that would be insulting to the dog.
2. Robert Byrd should loudly oink while attaching any earmarks to bills.
3. Hillary Clinton should always be carrying a broom and wearing a pointy hat while in the senate chamber.
4. Barak Obama should not speak unless spoken to. Also, he should not turn his back on me while leaving. He should walk backwards away from me.
5. Maria Cantwell, Mary Landreau and Patty Murray should greet me everyday wearing a Princess Leia outfits. Hey, I am getting kinkier with my rising power and age.
6. Chuck Schumer shoule always address me as Darth Joe.
7. When I get bored, Teddy Kennedy should entertain me by doing a Jabba the Hut impersonation.
8. Joe Biden, Richard Durbin and Patrick Leahy should slap each other like Larry, Curly and Moe whenever I demand.
9. Barbara Boxer and Dienne Fienstein should create an artificial hump on their backs, and walk with a stick while bending down. They should also attach big hairy moles on their chins.
10. John Kerry should neigh loudly whenever I look at him.

But in your case the damage done was carefully calculated and done in such a way as to minimize it.
Johnson's surgery was preceeded by an uncontrolled hemhorrage, so there is probably more damage there. Kind of like the difference between a scalpel incision and a shrapnel wound.
Also, while a tumor is significant, it might be somewhat easier to safely remove than the tangle of blood vessels Johnson had. Especially if the blood vessels serving the tumor can be cut and tied off without damaging blood flow to the normal brain.

Then, I think we might all be a bit better off.
