"Real exports of goods and services increased 6.3 percent in the third quarter, compared with an increase of 7.3 percent in the second. Real imports of goods and services increased 6.0 percent, compared with an increase of 12.6 percent."

5 In my own personal survey, I check out various kinds of safety permits, like, say, elevator permits. Not a one in downtown San Francisco (that I've seen, anyway) is up-to-date. Most of them expired sometime in mid-2003.

Between 2000 and 2002, all permits were current. Between 1997 and 2000, they were mostly expired, because the folks who inspect elevators for Cal-OSHA could make better money doing something else with elevators. The same thing is happening now. So I've known the economy was getting better since the first expired elevator permit was spotted.

It's not a fool-proof method, but it's indicative.
