Study: The Cute, It Does In Fact Burn

A study (almost certainly paid for by you, so you might as well hear about what you bought) finds that overly-cute images cause rage.

Dyer said she and her colleagues arent yet sure why cuteness seems to trigger expressions of aggression, even relatively harmless ones. Its possible that seeing a wide-eyed baby or roly-poly pup triggers our drive to care for that creature, Dyer said. But since the animal is just a picture, and since even in real life we might not be able to care for the creature as much as we want, this urge may be frustrated, she said. That frustration could lead to aggression.

Or the reason might not be specific to cuteness, Dyer said. Many overwhelmingly positive emotions look negative, as when Miss America sobs while receiving her crown. Such high levels of positive emotion may overwhelm people.

My guess would be simpler: People do not like to feel they are being manipulated and super-cute images are designed to be an easy-peasey lay-up of manipulation. See the cute puppy, say "Aaah."

People can of course be manipulated, and will even pay to be manipulated (Hollywood is built on this principle), but when the manipulation becomes obvious, people react negatively.

Thus, people will celebrate a film for being "moving" -- by which they mean the film successfully manipulated their emotions -- and scorn another movie for being "manipulative and cloying." And what they mean by the latter is simply, "I detected the machinery of manipulation, and I was offended by it."

In cute pictures, the gears of manipulation are right up front and out in the open.

Okay, I like cuteness some, but now I am sort of feeling angry. The shoe is too much.

I think this happens with pets and children, both of whom use Cuteness to get what they want. When you don't detect their agenda, it's adorable.

But the second you realize a kid -- or a dog -- is just being Cute to get a Treat, suddenly it's not adorable. You feel snookered.

Actually... This same reaction explains positive and negative reactions to the same political speech. Friendly partisans want to be "moved" and buy into all of the manipulative content in the first place; whereas unfriendly partisans aren't in the mood to be moved, and, more importantly, don't make the buy-in into all the manipulative catchphrases and rhetorical equivalencies.

The unfriendly partisan sees it as what it is-- a piece of craft designed to elicit as specific response, not much different from a simple con -- and feels hostility towards it.

Basically, she's calling it cute over-load. I think ace comes closer with his "I don't want to feel manipulated," but I don't think it's quite that, either.

I think part of it has to do with people's motivations (both the presenter and the receiver). So when I see those stupid ASPCA commercials with rich has-been actors/musicians telling me I should send money to the ASPCA, I get mad and want to kick a puppy. But when I see (for instance) Doom Kitteh, I laugh.

Seeing something cute for the mere sake of seeing something cute, and seeing such things relatively infrequently doesn't make me want to punch a hippy. Seeing something cute to make me "feel" the way someone else wants me to feel- specifically to manipulate me into doing something I don't want to do- makes me "Hulk SMASH!" angry.

70 I think the "rage/aggression" is really just a heightened "protective" emotion. I see a cute baby, I get overprotective/defensive of the baby. This equates to a drive to do violence upon those who would harm the baby. Hence, it reads as aggression. Not towards the subject of the picture, but towards everyone in the world outside the picture.

People get angry looking at cute things? That's a new one to me. The picture of the kitten in the boot only exists to be cute. There's no manipulation there. You look at it to look at something cute. It's not like someone would sneak that picture into a book of Holocaust photos or something, in which case it would be utterly out of place. If you google "Kitten in a boot," you're not looking for hard-hitting, gritty commentary. You're looking for an adorable kitten that's small enough to fit in a boot.

If a small child is being cloying, that's not cute. It's playacting, and it's the kind of thing that would have gotten me a swat across the butt from my mom when I was a kid.

And I actually DO think it's cute when pets deliberately try to look mournful if you don't give them a treat. But YMMV.

Ace, don't apologize. The last two posts are actually very political if you read between the lines, since two of the worst aspects of the current liberal hegemony are:

1. The use of sentimental and mawkish images to manipulate voters. (It's for the children!)

And,
