Study: The Cute, It Does In Fact Burn
— Ace

A study (almost certainly paid for by you, so you might as well hear about what you bought) finds that overly-cute images cause rage.

Dyer said she and her colleagues aren’t yet sure why cuteness seems to trigger expressions of aggression, even relatively harmless ones. It’s possible that seeing a wide-eyed baby or roly-poly pup triggers our drive to care for that creature, Dyer said. But since the animal is just a picture, and since even in real life we might not be able to care for the creature as much as we want, this urge may be frustrated, she said. That frustration could lead to aggression.

[...]

Or the reason might not be specific to cuteness, Dyer said. Many overwhelmingly positive emotions look negative, as when Miss America sobs while receiving her crown. Such high levels of positive emotion may overwhelm people.

My guess would be simpler: People do not like to feel they are being manipulated and super-cute images are designed to be an easy-peasey lay-up of manipulation. See the cute puppy, say "Aaah."

People can of course be manipulated, and will even pay to be manipulated (Hollywood is built on this principle), but when the manipulation becomes obvious, people react negatively.

Thus, people will celebrate a film for being "moving" -- by which they mean the film successfully manipulated their emotions -- and scorn another movie for being "manipulative and cloying." And what they mean by the latter is simply, "I detected the machinery of manipulation, and I was offended by it."

In cute pictures, the gears of manipulation are right up front and out in the open.

Okay, I like cuteness some, but now I am sort of feeling angry. The shoe is too much.

I think this happens with pets and children, both of whom use Cuteness to get what they want. When you don't detect their agenda, it's adorable.

But the second you realize a kid -- or a dog -- is just being Cute to get a Treat, suddenly it's not adorable. You feel snookered.

(By the way, I just realized how much you guys indulge me by letting me literally write whatever pops into my stupid head. I tend to forget this a lot, and forget how much you do indulge me, and forget how lucky I am to be able to do this job. So now that you've indulged me twice in a row I'll try to find something more political.)

Thanks to @harrietbaldwin.

Actually... This same reaction explains positive and negative reactions to the same political speech. Friendly partisans want to be "moved" and buy into all of the manipulative content in the first place; whereas unfriendly partisans aren't in the mood to be moved, and, more importantly, don't make the buy-in into all the manipulative catchphrases and rhetorical equivalencies.

The unfriendly partisan sees it as what it is-- a piece of craft designed to elicit as specific response, not much different from a simple con -- and feels hostility towards it.

57 I don't know that I buy it.  Not entirely, anyway.

Basically, she's calling it cute over-load.  I think ace comes closer with his "I don't want to feel manipulated," but I don't think it's quite that, either.

I think part of it has to do with people's motivations (both the presenter and the receiver).  So when I see those stupid ASPCA commercials with rich has-been actors/musicians telling me I should send money to the ASPCA, I get mad and want to kick a puppy.  But when I see (for instance) Doom Kitteh, I laugh.

Seeing something cute for the mere sake of seeing something cute, and seeing such things relatively infrequently doesn't make me want to punch a hippy.  Seeing something cute to make me "feel" the way someone else wants me to feel- specifically to manipulate me into doing something I don't want to do- makes me "Hulk SMASH!" angry.

The list was designed to capture as many guns as possible under that ridiculous umbrella of "evil black rifles".

62 I'm not sure I understand how popping bubble wrap is an indicator of aggressive thoughts.

Anyways, I think a theory that the cuteness makes you feel comparatively stronger and perhaps invokes a protection mode in the subject.  I could imagine a scenario  in nature where the protector makes "popping" noises around babies and such as a way to ward off any would be predators.

70 I think the "rage/aggression" is really just a heightened "protective" emotion. I see a cute baby, I get overprotective/defensive of the baby. This equates to a drive to do violence upon those who would harm the baby. Hence, it reads as aggression. Not towards the subject of the picture, but towards everyone in the world outside the picture.

People get angry looking at cute things?   That's a new one to me.      The picture of the kitten in the boot only exists to be cute.   There's no manipulation there.  You look at it to look at something cute.  It's not like someone would sneak that picture into    a    book of Holocaust photos or something, in which case it would be utterly out of place.    If you google "Kitten in a boot," you're not looking for hard-hitting, gritty commentary.  You're looking for an adorable kitten that's small enough to fit in a boot.

If a small child is being cloying, that's not cute.     It's playacting,   and it's the kind of thing that would have gotten me a swat across the butt   from my mom when I was a kid.

And I actually DO think it's cute when pets deliberately try to look mournful if you don't give them a treat.     But   YMMV.

Not really.  But there are certain things that most people think are cute (for e.g.: kittens and puppies), so if someone is showing those to me while attempting to get me to do something, they're trying to manipulate me with cuteness.

Actually, I call it "emotional blackmail" and anyone with children has seen it more times than they care to count.

97 That must explain why the media calls Obama such a great orator, when he's probably one of the weakest speakers in recent history.  He's visually unappealing rarely looking like he enjoys speaking, a very stiff affect and almost zero eye contact.  He relies on rhetorical crutches of strawmen and confrontation rather than persuasive devices.  He needs teleprompters to keep him disciplined to his message and utterly falls on his face when speaking off the cuff.  He handles questions from even friendly reporters in a combative manner.  In short, he's just an awful example of how a speaker wants to be perceived by his audience.

I think I speak for me* when I say this. Your eclectic thinking is the draw. I can analyze events just fine without much help. But my approach is so rigorous, predictable and methodical that it misses a lot of potential possibilities for different analysis. A broad more creative approach can bring those possibilities to the surface. In essence commenting here for me is jonesing for creativity in looking at a situation, stealing yours, then applying my rigorous elements of thought to it.

Since it is your creativity that drives all these new possibilities, how on Earth could I suggest that you need to put boundaries on your thought when the boundaries I put on my own thought is what creates the need for additional creative input?** That would be like buying a piece of art to hang on the wall to spruce up the room, then painting over it with the same paint on the walls so it matches.

*Your mileage may very.

176 >>>But the second you realize a kid -- or a dog -- is just being Cute to get a Treat, suddenly it's not adorable. You feel snookered. I don't. Dogs aren't that devious.

177 The unfriendly partisan sees it as what it is-- a piece of craft designed to elicit as specific response, not much different from a simple con -- and feels hostility towards it.

Nice.

Wait are you manipulating me?  I'm feeling insane with anger.

179 "I detected the machinery of manipulation, and I was offended by it."

This is why I generally don't like films.    Friends tell me to just hit the "I Believe" button, but I don't trust Hollywood to not sneak some retarded liberal assumptions.   Brain poison.

I can still enjoy films by mocking the liberal soapboxes and enjoying the explosions, but then the friends complain about me breaking their immersion ...

180 (By the way, I just realized how much you guys indulge me by letting me literally write whatever pops into my stupid head. I tend to forget this a lot, and forget how much you do indulge me, and forget how lucky I am to be able to do this job. So now that you've indulged me twice in a row I'll try to find something more political.)

Awwwwwwwwwww........... Isn't that cuuuuuuuute?

182 The overt child cuteness exploitation angle offends me in commercials aimed at the wimmens.

And for some reason it pisses women off when I tell them that.

183 Wait I was only just getting started.

184 indeed! if you are screaming "we will bury you" while you are doing it I am not sure which is more effective. I would go with the shoe, partly but not only because I do not want to ruin a good suit.

You could be more discreet and bang the kitten on the bed, enabling you to disrobe and spare the suit.

Or find a woman.

JANUARY 24--A Maine woman who was expecting to engage in a “threesome” with neighbors is facing criminal charges for allegedly brandishing several knives after the tryst failed to occur, police report.

Sabatino, who shares his home with roommate Shawna Chickering, 30, said that Nile “lives two trailers over.”

This happened in    Maine, eh?     The knives were probably to compensate for her lack of teeth.

(I   KEED, Maine 'rons,    I keed!)

187 @Anna, Your mistake is in expecting me to recoil from my hypocrisy. I embrace it. Like a lover. I cup my hypocrisy's ass and stick my tongue in its ear. When I'm done, I tell my hypocrisy "You should put some ice on that."

191 "Thus, people will celebrate a film for being "moving" -- by which they mean the film successfully manipulated their emotions"

Or, it means the film spoke truth, you cynical retard.

192 C'mon, this shit isn't newsworthy.

193 "My guess would be simpler: People do not like to feel they are being manipulated and super-cute images are designed to be an easy-peasey lay-up of manipulation. See the cute puppy, say "Aaah." People can of course be manipulated, and will even pay to be manipulated (Hollywood is built on this principle), but when the manipulation becomes obvious, people react negatively." Your guess would be correct. I'm driven to a near-psychotic rage by most things that idiots consider "cute". Fortunately for those around me,I am conscious of this fact and the psychological motivations behind it. So I know for a fact that with me, it is the cheap cynical manipulation that offends me. I'm sickened by the promise the "cute" spectacle seems to extend because I am acutely aware of the ugly and harsh nature of physical existence on this planet, and I am psychologically offended by the author of it,because usually it's deliberately framed in such a way for the photogenics by some sick fuck, who evidently is either unaware of the nature of existence themselves or thinks I am. "But since the animal is just a picture, and since even in real life we might not be able to care for the creature as much as we want, this urge may be frustrated, she said. That frustration could lead to aggression." Also, this explanation attempts to filter everything through the psychological lens of a fertile female,I'm aware of that fact too,and it makes me want to slap the theorizer for being a narcissistic retard. Dumb bitch couldn't think of any other explanation that doesn't reference someone's "mothering" instinct. Rather than allow for the possibility that your explanation, which rings true from my own experience,is the truth she will instead insist that men have a latent mothering instinct of their own. The part that pisses me off the most isn't the anti-scientific approach,or the idiotic conclusion from WonderGirl up there,it's the thought that somehow I'm paying for this study.
