— Gabriel Malor Final Update for This Post:
All hostages released. The hostage taker may be a local crazy guy named "Troy Stanley." They're still trying to get him out of the HQ. There is some conjecture that his bomb is actually made up of flares.
Earlier post:
I'm just looking through the story now.
Michelle Malkin is all over it.
As is Gateway Pundit.
Thanks to SOC and geoff for noticing it.
More: FOX has it, CNN is covering the train collision in Chicago.
The fellow, in his 40s, has taken two hostages. I see in news stories he's described as "armed", but it's not clear that they mean with a gun or are just referring to the bomb (or fake bomb) duct-taped to his chest.
There are sharpshooters standing by.
Question: what is it that this guy wants? He obviously doesn't want to kill others and die or he would have done it before he let two others go. So is he just a nut?
Oh, okay. FOX reports that his demand is to speak with Clinton. Weird.
And again: Arbalest points out that it was hella premature to call this fellow a "suicide bomber." At this point he's just a hostage taker with a bomb. God willing, he won't become a suicide bomber and that the two hostages will be released soon.
This is going into its second hour and it doesn't look like the New Hampshire authorities are releasing any official information (they've understandably got more important things to do). It's just conjecture at this point.
CNN briefly covered it before going back to the train crash to hypothesize that the bomber had himself released the first two hostages and told them to call 911.

One small correction:
"The fellow, in his 40s, has taken two hostages"
Since he did not walk in and press the magic button, as is the M.O. of suicide bombers (see any of several examples in Israel and Iraq for details), he is someone carrying a bomb who has taken hostages, and not (yet) a suicide bomber.

I don't think you can get around covering a story like this. There is the risk of giving this guy something he wants but I am more concerned about the news giving away too much. I don't like Fox showing where these cops are and Cameron needs to stop yelling "the SWAT TRUCK IS MOVING".
Giving this idiot any tactical information is unpardonable.

We can figure all the rest out later, right now the only important thing is the safety of these two people.

And it looks like he just let someone go. Curious.
Posted by: Secundus at November 30, 2007 11:04 AM (g6uKI)
Drew,
I understand the sentiment. But what else is there to address on this? Until there are developments, there's nothing else to cover. Isn't the first question, "what does he want"? Yeah, I get the "talk to Clinto" thing. But you know what I mean. Where is this guy coming from?
Posted by: Penn State Marine at November 30, 2007 11:04 AM (DFVTW)
I'm calling it--this will be an evil Bush plot by the end of the day. If this guy even walked past a person who voted for Bush he'll be an example of evil, unhinged Republicanism.
Secundus beat me to it. This guy could be the DNC's main man and the flimsiest connection to Bush will be found. We talking crap like, "I heard that he once rode on the same train as Bush, so he's an evil-Rebuplican." That will be enough to prove that the Right is bad.

Sometimes there's not much to say other than hoping for the best. The rest is generally unhelpful and be the kind of thing one may regret later.
Look at the Kos thread, it's pretty disgusting(and note I am NOT saying your comment was out of line by any stretch). Nothing good comes from speculation at this point.
Of course media bashing is always fun. As I posted above, they need to real careful of what they are showing. Fox strikes me as getting very close to the line.
Posted by: Drew at November 30, 2007 11:08 AM (hlYel)
The cops have the whole place overwatched by snipers. There's no reason to send SWAT in against a guy who's got a bomb on him--not yet, anyway.
So while Fox and CNN may be parasites, right now they probably aren't telling the hostage taker anything important.
Posted by: Secundus at November 30, 2007 11:09 AM (g6uKI)
But, that's just my half-assed opinion.

# 11 Gabriel Malor
Thanks.
My point was to keep the distinctive title of suicide bomber (and related profile) reserved for those who wear/carry and then intentionally target and detonate a bomb to intentionally murder civilians, frequently many of whom are women and children.
This title/profile seems Not to fit Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Confucians, Animists, Wiccans, etc., and there seems little reason that we should relax the profile or allow it to be changed.
As a side note, I hope this fool is either faking, or surrenders, or gets capped, or injures no one but himslef.
Posted by: Arbalest at November 30, 2007 11:09 AM (CJpJQ)
Hey, Xchaan, you wanna be pointman against a guy wired up with C4? No?
And if the snipers don't have a shot, they should make every effort to resolve this without killing anybody.
Posted by: Secundus at November 30, 2007 11:12 AM (g6uKI)
Standing around outside while this douche can do what he wants inside is not my idea of why we pay police.
They aren't just standing around. They just got 1 of the 3 hostages released. I'm pretty sure the cops have a much better idea how to handle this the a few random morons on a blog.
Let the pros do their job.

The problem is this guy may not know what he's seeing on TV and panic if he thinks they are coming to take him down. It seem the less he knows or thinks he knows the better.

Ok, let's take a different approach:
do you say "I do not negotiate with terrorists" and walk away and let the police to their thing alone?
Then what do you do with terrorists? If you walk away and he sets the thing off, are you then reponsible for not preventing the loss of human life with a simple phone call?
This is some straight up fucked up shit. No one wants to pile on the girl in stiletto heels who just got raped. But sometimes you reap what you sow.
The bottom line is, the world has a problem with terrorism; whether AQ, Malvo or this piece of shit. There's only one way to deal with it. In this case, a spectacular head-shot.

This situation is pissing me off.
As I am watching this unfold, I am thinking about the way that Hillary is being treeated versus how the President was treated. In the wake of the worst terrorist attaack in US history, the President took prudent steps to protect himself until such time as he knew that the threat was neutralized. He was excoriated for "running and hiding" instead of standing into danger.
Fast forward to today. One lone whack job threatens Hillary hundreds of miles from where she is. She cancels all of her appearances and cowers away behind her Secret Service protection.
Something doesn't seem equal in the coverage.
Posted by: Steve L. at November 30, 2007 11:21 AM (hpZf2)
Fox wasn't showing them standing around. They were showing an armored car move down the street and Carl Cameron is yelling "The armored car is moving! It's moving towards the building!. It could mean nothing or to a nervous nut job it could mean they are storming the place (even though they aren't).
Now Cameron is on Fox describing the SWAT team 'inching down the street toward the building' and that one SWAT member is holding a pry bar.
He needs to STFU.

Whether he's an unhinged right winger or an unhinged left winger, if this is a politically motivated crime, it will be a bad thing for our political process. These sorts of events rob the population of its ability to make rational decisions.
Unfortunately, the fact that she is a presidential candidate pretty much guarantees that this is a politically motivated crime. So, in addition to the individual costs of this act, we all stand to lose a great deal collectively, as well. (No matter where his political lunacy is coming from).

If a cop were to come up and knock the mic out of Cameron's hand and arrest him on any charge to get him off the air, I'd buy the guy a drink.
