— LauraW Superb new blog.
Spot-on column from members of The Lincoln Club Of Orange County:
The grumbling. The head shaking. The anger.Congressional Republican leaders clearly have no idea what we, their fellow GOP members (and financial backers), say to one another when we get together, yet for years one refrain has been constant: our extreme discontent over how the former GOP majority blew it on spending.
The authors detail how Republicans have let us down on earmarks. And how they continue to exhibit that defeatist porker attitude that so enrages us.
It is not credible to ask the American people to return Republicans to the majority when all we offer them is the same group of leaders and policies they so recently rejected. It's not just "branding," but the right policies which will breathe new life into the Republican Party and re-energize voters.
And one more thing: come November 5th, should the current GOP leadership in either house survive to lead in a new Congress, the Lincoln Club of Orange County will review its financial backing of all Congressional Republicans, and we urge others to do likewise. A GOP caucus that would re-elect such leaders is not one we would likely continue to support.
Because, simply put: we refuse to support a permanent minority.
Outstanding. Perfect. Articulated in terms that even a Congresscritter can understand.
They're right, of course. When the party no longer represents the People, the ball is in our court. It's time to be a joiner. It's time to go grassroots.
If real Republicans are failing to enter and change the system, it's because We the People have failed to adequately support them.
It behooves us all to look for these people and elevate them, and to withhold our support for RINOs, and tell them why.
Spirit of 94 has a petition you can sign too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Even if this effort eventually leads to another 1994, we will go back to another 2006. It will repeat again and again unless we do more than just put better people in power. We need goals that will reverse the last hundred years of government growth. Half-assed changes will just get us back to where we are now.
1. Eliminate several Cabinet Departments, such as Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Labor.
2. Privatize Social Security
3. Eliminate all forms of income taxation.
4. Revoke McCain-Fiengold and most campaign laws. Let people donate whatever they want to whomever they want.
5. Eliminate all Federal aid to State and local government.

Not to start a round of McCain bashing, but this is revisionist history. Back in the real 2001, McCain just reached across the aisle and grabbed some class warfare rhetoric from his friends to justify his vote against the Bush tax cuts.
"I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle-class Americans who most need tax relief.
excerpted from the Senate floor statement made by John McCain before voting against President Bushs tax cut, May 26, 2001.

I love all these ideas, but get a majority of people to support them?
Hell, even Kosher Jews and Muslims know PORK TASTES GOOD and drives the money into the campaign coffers. Corporate America will give more money to Dean and his Socialists this year that Republicans; principle has very little to do with that.
Newt had his chance in '94 and proved too weak and undisciplined to force Clintoon and his crooks to accept financial discipline and limited government except around the edges.
GWB hasn't done anything but allow government to continue to grow regulation and spend, spend, spend.
Pandora ain't getting back in the box.

The result? New boss turned out to be the same as the old boss. Go figure.
I grew up in a world of moronic Democratic crapola, and will likely die some day in the same condition. Lived to see a little conservative renaissance along the way. Can't say I noticed much of a difference.
It's all good though, because a permanent benefit of being a Republican is that even though you'll probably lose most elections, you still have your education, money and standard of living.

Who's doing nothing? Oh, right. Me. I've been a Republican contributer for years and gotten nothing from the Michigan GOP but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at the state or federal level.
Hell, my supposed Republican Congressman Vern Ehlers is opposed to drilling in ANWAR and outside abortion and the war may as well be a Democrat. My state rep rolls over to Granholm on taxes and spending. The De Vos's and Secchia's control the party here like a toy they play with every couple years. I have no voice there.
I'm saving you the rest of the angry-man rant 'cause it doesn't matter. Conservatives have zero levers of power here and few outside red state America.
Yes. I'm pissed I've got to scribble in a mark for John McCain this November
I'm shorting the market, changing my portfolio to off-shore assets, and have been for a year. I don't feel one bit guilty about it or about the nap I'm taking after my next Bourbon.
Posted by: Spartan Fan at July 19, 2008 12:08 PM (7365r)
I've had that defeatist feeling for a while now and want to shake it off, frankly.
McCain does not inspire me. I'm looking for some longterm good news and planning.
This could be the seed of a new Contract with America, passed from the base directly to our subordinates in Congress.
Posted by: lauraw at July 19, 2008 01:17 PM (DbybK)
I'm really sorry to rant here, and I truly hope I don't bring you down. I want to believe -- I really do. I want to think there's a way short of another revolution to turn back the tide of socialism, or even to open another beachhead against its advance -- I just don't know where we'll find any more real-estate in which to build our redoubts.
The problem, lauraw, is that they don't believe for an instant they are our subordinates.
And they take steps to ensure that never changes. So I'm doing my part by not voting for McCain or Lindsey Graham to ratify the further leftist slide of Conservatism, and I signed that petition, and I would love to shake off the defeatist feeling, but we have us a shiny new aristocracy, and whether they be a minority or a majority in our government I don't have any reason to believe they would do anything to jeopardize their power or the perks of their standing.
How do you run for office anymore? It is a rich man's game, or a con man's game, or all too often, both. The barriers for a candidate to arise outside of the corrupted avenues to office are too prohibitive for an honest reformer to consider.
I'd love to run for Lindsey Graham's job and have at the old guard. I simply cannot afford it. It would require quitting my job, emptying my meager savings & portfolio, and working hundred hour weeks to campaign as a complete outsider in a state I've lived in, off and on, for the last 3 years. If I lose, I am forfeiting the financial security I've worked so hard for the past decade for myself and my family.
And quite frankly the people, the ones who are pulling the lever for Graham & McCain & all their corrupt fellows --- they don't want change.
The people are stupid. The people are whiners. The people are lazy. Now don't get me wrong -- They are products of their society which has been dumbed down and governmented up to the point that it believes the government should actually fix the weather for cripes sake. But they accept the status quo, and gobble up the soundbites that pass for debate.
And they Keep. Pulling. The. Levers.
Ronald Reagan, John F Kennedy, and our forefathers are all spinning in their collective graves. This is not the country they envisioned. This isn't the country they inspired to do great things. This is a country of fickle people who have no idea of the real challenges facing us, and have no higher calling than staying a couple steps ahead of the debt collectors as they squander the legacy of truly great leaders.
Maybe the future of Conservatism and Classical Liberalism is actually in some up-and-coming ex-Soviet satellite, where the lessons of Socialism are still fresh. Short of a massive turnover in Republican seats for principled Conservatives, I fear we sunsetted with Reagan.
As Otto Bismarck famously said "Politics is the art of the possible", which contemporary meaning is that compromise is at the center of truly great leadership.
While applicable enough for the day-to-day bureaucratic finagling of governments, it is not a truism that stands on its own. "The center", as was also famously said, "can not hold." This is circumstantially applicable when the underpinnings upon which your political existence sits are traded away for so many pretty beads.
I am reminded of another saying: "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was making people believe he didn't exist."
When the defense of foundational principles is popularly accepted within one's political cohort as the simple-minded, or immature and irrelevant rantings of a dinosaur, then the cohort is no longer defending anything but its own power, and principles are but an artifice cynically applied in its singular pursuit.
Yeats continued ominously:
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

McCain's all we've got, so he's got my vote. What other options do we have?
But the GOP gets bnot another nickel from me until the return to the genuine policies of fiscal conservatisms that once won them such acclaim.
Or until a party that will return to thos policies replaces them!

I "joined" once... in '84.
... and by 1988, I knew that the Repubs were not interested in the "fiscal conservative" wing of their party. See: the original "immigration amnesty", "Socialist InSecurity reform", unrestrained spending, Reagan's 1980 support for eliminating Federal education spending while doing absolutely nothing, etc. (Deja vu?)
I considered voting for the "Libertarian" candidate for President in 1988(*cough* Ron Paul *cough*)- but he had some baggage, and I voted for "none of the above". BTW, since we got to hear about all the 'negatives' on Ron Paul again this year during the primaries, ask yourself if you ever heard "Tawana Brawley", "Steve Pagones", and/or "Freddy's Fashion Mart" mentioned in any MSM coverage of the 2004 Dem primaries...
After GHWB's "Read my lips", "thousand points of light" and "record deficits"- I was happy to vote for Andre Marrou in '92.
Harry Browne vs Bob Dole was an absolute "no-brainer".
In 2000, Browne was "tainted" by a campaign funding scandal, but I still thought he had to be better "fiscally" than a "compassionate conservative" with a record of spending every cent (and more!) of the booming tax receipts of the 90's to boost his "bi-partisan cred"-- not to mention "son of GHWB" invoked the "sequel rule". If it ain't "Godfather II", "Aliens", or "The Empire Strikes Back", it's probably gonna suck...
I patted myself on the back every day through the 2004 election- NCLB, nominating Harriet fucking Miers to the SC, MediScare drug benefits, largest expansion of discretionary spending since LBJ, -Harriet -fucking -Miers!, signing McCain-Feingold, "Epic Fail" on SS reform, not even one single spending "veto"- not to mention that whole Harriet Miers disaster...
So, as an Ohio voter (remember how close it was in 2004?)- I voted for a loonie-toon (Badnarik) that doesn't even believe in Driver's licenses!
After all, the only two "Republicans" representing Ohio in the Senate during my entire lifetime have been George Voinibitch and Mike DeWhiner- I'm supposed to care if they're not re-elected?

The reason we don't have good, conservative Republicans coming into the system is because most younger Americans have had their tender little heads filled with utter shit, to be blunt.
They have grown up being told that striving for a gubmint job isn't lazy arsed self interest, it's, believe it or not, the highest form of patriotism. Being a public servant. Bush recently delivered this wad of crap line at a college commencement and the crowd applauded. Like a pimp saying getting your sister to be a prostitute is the highest form of family tie.
Didn't the Founding Fathers see gubmint service as something one did as an unpleasant necessity and then one returned to one's former life in the real world? Does anyone want to argue that perpetual gubmint job hunting/electioneering was what they fought their war over? Anyone? A Democrat would.
Well, try getting that simple point to soak into the skull of a young Obamessiah voter looking for change and hope. Just try.
Change from what?
Hope to do what?
Hitler brought change; Trains that ran on time and renewed German strength, along with widespread warfare, genocide and death.
Pol Pot ran on a promise of hope. A few million dead Cambodians later, they hoped He'd die and leave them alone.
Stalin was all about change. 25 million Russians (and others) died for that change to come about, and it eventually led to the collapse of the Soviet state.
Einstein once famously told a colleague that performing the same test over and over, the exact same way, expecting a different result was the definition of insanity. So, predictable input yields predictable results.
SO, change and hope from the left are boilerplate for the same old crap. To expect change without work, and hope to have meaning without work, is the definition of insanity.
So, the country's a little crazy now, and us Conservative types are unpopular as long as we actually think change and hope should require effort and work.
So, that's the reason why there are fewer conservatives in the new generation and our movement has fallen out of favor. It also explains why leftist turds like McManiac can masquerade as Republicans and Conservatives.
Whoever starts this new rightist movement has an up hill battle, that's for darned sure.
I'll be watching.

Start all over again with a properly cleaned slate. Allow no weenies, no obfuscation, no wimpy RINO types to join.
Find the devils (libs) in your midst and throw them out.
Keep it clean, keep it simple, keep it honest.
Occam's Razor, I'm saying. The simplest way is the best way. Complication makes things fail. For machines and societies alike.
