Speech Thread
— Ace

Surprisingly awesome.

"A ship at harbor is safe, but that's not why it's built."

"Only one man [in this race] has actually fought for America, and that man is John McCain."

Really surprisingly smart and effective speaker. I was afraid she would be a bumpkin (because I've internalized all that media bias against my fellow shotgun-pumpin' Bible-thumpin' cousin-humpin' Republicans), but damnit she's awesome.

Her Canadian/Minnesotan accent (well, her Alaskan accent) doesn't really come through when she's speaking rhetorically. Like the Beatles when they're singing.

Mother of five? Well, mother of two at least.

Over on either CNN or MSNBC, one clueless douchebag reporter claimed there would be a conflict between McCain's reformer image and the "Bridge to Nowhere," which he assumed without checking that Palin supported.

Um, aren't you assholes supposed to check shit like that before spouting off?

Slublog--

Holy crap, I'm actually excited listening to a McCain speech.

This is not the Maverick I thought I knew.

Gabe--

I have a tingle...

Note he didn't specify "leg."

Van Palin Logo! Heh.

Obviously both her and her husband have a bit of the outlaw in them. They eloped, they're kinda kooky individualist outsiders, etc. They're going to play really well.

A good thing about the husband is that he's obviously a Guy's Guy so there won't be that sniping about "carrying his wife's handbag" and such emasculating rot.

40 This pick was brilliant. Of all the Obama campaigns lies the greatest is that somehow he will unite the country, or will work across party lines.

Because you know, McCain has never done such a thing, has no history of it.  And Palin has no history of taking her party to task.  Obama wouldn't so much as question a single plank of his party's obsidian platform.

I'm not a republican I'm an independent, and now it's clear who I will be voting for.  Excellent pick, McCain.

Palin did a shockingly good job with her rollout speech.  As a first impression for most of America it was really important.  I think that right after they both walked off stage, Johnny Mac and VPILF exchanged low-fives (not high fives...McCain can't get his arm that high).

Job well done, governor, job well done.

I've been thinking that since they let it out Wednesday night that the VP was in the offing and everyone was sworn to silence.  There was so much speculation, it made Barry's speech seem like a let down to everyone but the people in the stadium who were just happy to be there.

You could smell this coming a mile a way.

On another note, let me second Amy C and say that Sarah's husband is HOT.  I think I may have to move to Alaska!

Only one on either ticket has managed a military force.

David Ross: shill, would you rather Obama's veep was getting naked?  Uhhhh.  Fuck no.  Well, actually, I think it would seal the deal electorally.  I would be willing to take the hit for my country, I guess.

82 Man, some comments over at Politico sound desperate. Back to calling McCain a cancer-survivor, and now calling Palin a "PTA mom made good." Please God, let the Left pursue this tack. Nothing like belittling women, mothers, and people surviving cancer. Even plain vanilla radio news breaks are already going to pains mentioning the alleged Palin fire-the-state-trooper story. MSM will utterly ignore Obastard's self-serving deals and focus like a microscope on that one issue. It's also amusing to hear the radio announcer parrot the line about her inexperience. Compared to whom... Emperor Obama the Odious? And she is the VP, not the top of the ticket like Messiah.

84 Fucking awesome pick!  There are 18 million hags that wanted to vote for a woman.  9 million of them said they won't vote for The One.  McCain just gave them the option to vote for another woman and one who stands on her own, not on the chest of her husband.  That just might do it.  I don't care if they join the party, I just care that they not vote for Him.

Posted by: Davey at August 29, 2008 08:07 AM (JmflD)

85 freemo, being a woman can be a huge thing.  There's a universe of difference between marrying Bill Clinton and working your way up the Alaska political system while mothering your family.

And Hillary doesn't come across as genuine.  No one doubts Palin's sincerity when she praises her kids.  Her son headed to the sandbox?  She truly is proud of him.

I think many women will identify with how challenging her experience really has been.

86 She owns and flies a floatplane.  I am a pilot, but I have never qualified on floats.  From what I hear, it takes a lot of skill and judgement.  Doesn't automatically make her qualified to be VP, as if there is agreement on what does, but it says something about nerves and guts.

Posted by: sherlock at August 29, 2008 08:08 AM (h6sl7)

87 Though there may be exceptions, as a general rule no matter what an Obama supporter may say to criticize Palin what they're really saying is "McCain's choice of Palin makes has jeopardized the ascension of the redeemer, and we hate both of them for that.

105 Shill (or is it Skill),

Exactly. The thing that really got to me was how real her story is. Not riding the coattails of her hubby, but willing to work by his side on a fishing boat. And then moving her way up through PTA, Mayor, State Commissions, then Governor on her own merit and determination.

I compare her to Hilary and Palin is 1000% more comfortable in her own skin...as a woman. And I so can relate to her. This is gonna be interesting.

119 freemo, it's shill.  I got tired of GHY (go huck yourself), and I was too uncreative to find anything interesting.  I basically am a merciless cheerleader, so it seemed like an honest nick.   But I probably need to drop the stupid unicode thing.

As I think about this selection... and how Obama's obnoxious reply had to ignore that she's a governor and basically insult the hell out of her, I think things are looking great.  One huge benefit to Palin is that as voters identify with her, they will want to defend her against unfair attacks.  Obama has been extremely aggressive towards Mccain lately because he can't run on his own ability... this really puts a wrench in those plans.  There will be a long road getting the PUMAs... I think Obama attacking Palin today will help a lot.  And Mccain was doing fairly poorly with women in general.  This can't hurt.  Having kids and running Alaska?  And knowing Obama will harp incessently about how this isn't hard work?  Oh, I think he's set up for failure.

CJ, to be honest, I don't really like that glass ceiling talk either.  I think her best bet is to run as a governor who happens to be a woman and not fight too hard along ID politic lines.  But for many women, this is a big damn deal, and probably one of the highest ratings moments for the entire election, so the campaign probably decided to be less subtle.

I hope you aren't too pissed off about it.  She is a pretty damn good choice on her own merits, though I'd be lying if I thought she had even 1% of a chance if she were a dude.

If you want to send Mccain enough cash for a thirty pack of O'Douls, here's his money getting link thing: https://secure.johnmccain.com/Contribute/ContributeE.aspx?guid=683d56f1-90bb-454c-8afe-5f10275ca153

In a nutshell the OODA loop is how a person/persons decides what to do.

It stands for Observe, Orient, Decide and Act.

When you are inside the loop, they are reacting to you, and do not get a chance go on the offensive.

137 Boy the "I guess McCain will now have someone else to refer to as a cunt" seems to be the running meme across the liberal blogosphere.

Posted by: Rocks at August 29, 2008 08:43 AM (Q1lie)

138 CJ, I think that's probably the fundamental problem with Mccain.  He often strays from conservatism in a way that, while not necessarily has severe impact, but shows that he's not resting on the same foundations typical right wingers rest their ideals on.

and to be sure, Mccain will piss us off next year, at least a few times.  But the narrative out there is so well established that Obama is more deserving of the office just because he'd be the first black guy... and no matter how stupid and contrary to MLK and America that idea is, it's what a lot of idiots really believe.  Should Mccain deny it or find his version of it?  Obviously he should deny it firmly, but that's just not the way he's going to play it.  Mccain isn't really that far removed from the democrats.  He's symptomatic of many GOP senators.

but I'm not less enthused.  He was our best shot, I guess.  And while the definition of Republican will be a little to the left thanks to him, Palin is a good promise that this isn't a permanent penalty.

And folks, just imagine if he had picked Pawlenty (who I probably would have picked, to be honest, because I don't have Mccain's balls).  The press would be talking about Obama, they would be saying the exact same thing about Pawlenty's lack of foreign policy experience (they'd say it about any governor, even though it's kinda not true).  What if he had picked Romney?  I'm sure there's tons of Romney vs. Mccain video out there (a la And Obama has a speech he gave in 2002).  Or Leiberman?  I hope he wasn't ever a serious option, though he probably was.

Success in this climate means comprimising, and thankfully, Sarah Palin really doesn't feel like comprimising... she is making conservatives happy.

And if Obama thinks the race should be decided on foreign policy, I'm guessing that ain't going to work for him.  That war room is also learning a lot about comprimise... no attack on the GOP ticket will work very well now.  HA!

148 quaking conservative, if Sarah is worth her salt she will hold her own.  If she's not, I guess I don't mind if the voters reject her.  I think she'll do well.  She's risked her entire career on an attempt to clean up Alaska, and it worked.  She has a lot to say for herself.

And I'm just guessing she will be well versed on foreign policy (the arugment Mccain already has won against Obama).  On corruption, change, and domestic policy, I think she'd win a debate with Biden right now.  She used to be a sportscaster, and from listening to her, I honestly think she thinks on her feet well.

Biden is a wildcard.  Sometimes he comes across very well, and sometimes he comes across as a huge asshole.  I expect he will put on a great game, but that Palin will win on teh facts (and of course, looking better means a lot in this game).

177 Prufrock; Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a salmon. Sorta. Trout and salmon are salmonid; Coho, Pink, Chinook, Sockeye and Chum salmon all belong to Oncorhynchus. (Brook and some other trout belong to Salmo. Blame the ichthyologists.) Steelhead is the anadromous (hatched in fresh water, reaches adulthood in the sea) form of Rainbow trout. That that stay in fresh water all their lives are trout, the others are salmon. It's life cycle behavior, no just the species. Bet Gov. Palin knows the difference.
