Shocka! Mayor Daley Refuses to Say U of I Should Release Obama/Ayers Records; Mounts Defense of His Terrorist Friend
— Ace

Thick as thieves and tight as ticks.

Note Mayor Daley does not seem to agree that Obama and Ayers are merely politely-nodding acquaintances. He says they're friends -- something Obama denies.

"Bill Ayers, I've said this, his father was a great friend of my father. I'll be very frank. Vietnam divided families, divided people. It was a terrible time of our country. It really separated people. People didn't know one another. Since then, I'll be very frank, (Ayers) has been in the forefront on a lot of education issues and helping us in public schools and things like that.

"People keep trying to align [him] with Barack Obama. It's really unfortunate. They're friends. So what? People do make mistakes in the past. You move on. This is a new century, a new time. He reflects back and he’s been making a strong contribution to our community."

First of all, he's unrepentant -- and forgiveness follows confession of error.

His "mistakes" consisted of bombing federal buildings. One bomb he helped built killed a confederate (his girlfriend at the time, IIRC).

He was a terrorist like bin Ladin -- just not as effective. (Bin Ladin doesn't smoke pot.)

It's one thing to say "forgive." It's another to say "embrace" -- and that's precisely what Daley, Obama, and other members of the liberal Chicago political machine have done.

They've made their decisions. Let us make ours.

Release the records. Let us decide.

You know what it means when a politician says "I'll be frank" 3 times in 3 sentences?

It means the corrupt fuck is lying.

Keep talking Daley.

3 Holy cow.  It's really gonna happen.  On election night, as the reports of McCain victories pile higher and higher, Keith Olberman will crap out a Klingon wedding party on live TV.

Heaven.

So if someone applied for a contract in Chicago who had a history of personal and business dealings with David Duke, would hizzoner say "so what?"

I think it's more likely we'd hear that Chicago had no room for hatred and division

5 A recent New York Times profile of Obama's days on the South Side of Chicago contends that, according to unnamed "aides" to Obama, Obama first met Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn at the Hyde Park home of the couple. This meeting occurred apparently in November, 1995 according to an anonymous blogger who claims to have been there, as Obama was launching his campaign for the state senate of Illinois.
If the Ayers/Dohrn-Obama meet and greet took place in November, 1995, it cannot have been the first time that Obama met Ayers.  By that time Obama was already Chairman of the Board of the $50 million Chicago Annenberg Challenge Grant program that was designed by Ayers. Ayers began the grant proposal design process in December 1993 and the grant was formally announced in January, 1995.  Barack Obama was identified as the Chair in press reports in June of 1995.
So, unless Ayers helped pick a board chair he had never met and would never meet until the "meet and greet," Obama, in fact, met Ayers well before the launching of his state senate campaign.  Of course, it is very likely that there would have had to have been a very close working relationship between Ayers, as the lead architect of the Annenberg proposal, and the first board chairman.  They would have had to have agreed on basic educational policy issues. And Obama would have been crucial in leading fund raising efforts since the $50 million grant was conditioned on a 2-1 match from other donors (and something they were quite successful at - raising an additional $60 million by 1999).
As I have written here before, my hypothesis is that Ayers and Obama had an older relationship and a deeper political affinity than has been made clear until now. The attempts by so many around Obama, and by Obama himself, to portray this as an arms length relationship simply do not fit the facts that are available.
For example, the Annenberg Challenge grant money was aimed at solidifying the school reforms put in place in Chicago in 1988 when a campaign for "local control" emerged in the wake of a teachers' strike that galvanized business and community opposition to the power of teachers' union and the Chicago school bureaucracy.
Both Obama and Ayers were active in that reform post-strike campaign. Ayers helped organize a major force in the lobbying for that 1988 campaign, the Alliance For Better Chicago Schools, or ABCs.  The Developing Communities Project which Obama headed at that time was a member of the ABCs, apparently one of the few members of the ABCs that worked with the black community. Many in the black community knew that teaching, the unions and school administration were one avenue to the middle class for blacks and thus were wary of the reform effort.
Certainly support for "local control" would have been a pre-requisite to allowing Obama to chair, at such a young and untested age, the Annenberg Challenge. Thus, I think we can safely date the beginning of the Obama-Ayers relationship to at least 1988 when the ABCs effort was underway in Chicago schools. That was also when Ayers and Obama would have met up with the future Executive Director of the Annenberg Challenge, who would have been hired by Ayers and Obama, Ken Rolling.  Rolling in 1988 was on the staff of the Woods Fund which provided several grants to the school reform effort and to Obama's Developing Communities Project at that time.  Of course, a decade later, in 1999, as is already widely known, Ayers would join Obama on the board of the Woods Fund itself

6 Why do they keep suggesting just forgive and forget?
Would he be saying the same thing if David Duke got McCain to work on his education committee? "What's the big deal, they are just friends?"
The worst they have ever been able to pin on Duke, other than being a racist asshole, is filing a false tax return and mail fraud. Hell, Franken has done worse than that and he's the Dem Party nominee for Senate.
What the hell could be so bad about the records from an education committee anyway?

7 The original Mayor Daley, this Daley's father, hated Ayers and the other domestic terrorists. Absolutely hated them. And while people had differing views about the war, no one but a small fringe group supported assholes like Ayers, Dohrn, and the others who mostly blew them selves up. To find out that decades later they have infiltrated our education system, makes me sick. And what they hell do either of them do for anyone and especially kids? How does writing policy and infusing it with marxist thought help any one, let alone an inner city kid?

Yeah, we remember your father, Mayor Daley.

He's the one who was caught on camera at the Dem convention of 1968, screaming "Fuck you, you Jew son of a bitch" at Sen. Abraham Ribicoff, over the latter's complaining during a speech of "gestapo" Chicago police tactics against anti-war demonstrators outside the convention hall.

IOW Daley's dad would have been happy to see a stout police trunchon applied forcefully to Bill Ayer's head, if he were in that crowd.

A conservative Democrat crook mayor father then , his liberal Democrat crook mayor son now.

That's Chicago.

go to those globallabor.blogspot.com posts.

But the first thing that would come out is exactly when Barry met Billy.  It wasn't in November of 1995 like the NY Times reported.

Then it would be obvious that Obama's answer in that debate that Billy was just a guy in his neighborhood, and "a professor of English" was total BS.  Of course Obama knows what his friend and colleague of 20 years teaches.

IIRC Ayer's father was an executive with the local power company, so it's not surprising that he and Daley's father might have been friends. However I'm betting that both of them would have liked to smack Ayers upside the head with a truncheon back in the day.

I dunno about the veracity of this claim. It has changed over the years from people hearing it, people lip reading it, etc. Whatever the case, they really knew how to throw a convention back then. None of this boring crap with Fleetwood Crap songs and candidates tonguing their wives.

18 Purple Avenger is right.  Someone is probably falsifying something to stuff in the box, but whatever was there is likely gone.

Nevertheless, Obama led a $45 million  education program to "failure" (their words, not mine), and was highly involved with Ayers... such that his later comments were lies.

Daley's comments are extremely offensive.  We won't forgive Osama Bin Laden in 50 years.  Blowing up federal buildings... trying to kill people... that's not something we can accept.  Daley is just forcing Mccain's staff to explain this over and over, and he's making this a much bigger issue.  Somehow, he's playing right into our hands.

Most Americans don't know that Chicago politics = forgiving liberal terrorists.  They don't know that Ayers worked to bomb our Pentagon and Capital, and that Obama thinks that's Ok because it happened years ago.  Once they do, Obama will lose.  So keep arguing, Daley!  Slam the library doors in our faces and cover up the information.  The mere fact that we can't read the information, and that it's being destoryed, is enough for most Americans to realize that Obama is some kind of monster.

That small fringe group is the Democrat party, the media, and the staff at universities today. Democrat party leadership always supported Ayers. They didn't want him to achieve a victory for himself, but they supported his attempts to destroy the society of the US during the early 70s, and they and he were mostly successful.

I'm done with the fuckers, they're enemies now. "Moderates" have had plenty of time to bail.

I'm generous, though. I'll just ignore the dipshits unless they do something like, oh, I don't know, get all cuddly with an avowed and unrepentant America-hating terrorist.

34 donated 70,000 key cards to the DNC for the convention.

Looks like very thin plywood.  There is only one company I know of that makes that stuff.  UPM/Wisa in Finland.

Its quite expensive.  I know, I buy a fair amount of it for modeling.  The 1/32" and 1/64" 3-ply are quite flexible and durable.  Would certainly make for viable keycards.

If you're buying thin plywoods, you're not buying American, because that's something we don't make.

So as soon, as Samuel Richard Berger, has finished his review of documents, you can be trusted with the truth about obama, without worrying about any sort of security concerns.

Let us just say that besides being unrepentant, he's also pointedly refused to rule out ever bombing again.

42 At least it is not the race war weather underground people. Fuck that guy though.

This is off topic, but it seems like I am the only person who is noticing this. The democratic party has built their momentum on anger about the war in Iraq. I read something every day about Obama being the peace candidate and hear about Bush and his fascist wars constantly. That is basically what the left rallies on now. That and celebrating when people they do not like die. Obama says Iraq was not in our strategic interest often and his big selling point is that he did not support the war when he was a state legislator. It is pretty much that, some emotion and apparently the world is going to unify or something and people from Europe will like the U.S.

Why is the D.R. of the Congo or Darfur in our national interest while Iraq is not? It has been about a year since the base of the democratic party said "pull out now we do not need to babysit a civil war, genocide is inevitable anyway and fuck Bush for causing it. We demand peace, bring the troops home." and now they want to hop in on two more civil wars. How is Iraq not worth it, while doing something very similar in Darfur and the D.R. of the Congo are? Is there something missing or are these people as stupid as they sound? The only thing I can think of is the unilateralism vs the UN thing, but if I recall correctly the D.R. of the Congo is where the UN peace keepers were raping everybody.

Am I crazy or is there a serious discrepancy here?

48 That is disturbing to hear. It seems like something that involved so many deaths would be more important than that. I understand why some people oppose or opposed the war, but there is a whole other layer to it that is disgusting. If McCain wanted to he could just make Obama talk about the next wars and watch people who actually believe what they have been saying for the last few years wander off to Nader.

If Obama is not able to build international support and goes into the Sudan anyway he will have basically done exactly what Bush did that supposedly caused so many people in the democratic base to go crazy. Sudan or D.R. of the Congo could go horribly wrong and it might be worth talking about before people vote. It will be interesting to see how the press covers the war if their guy is in office. If this does happen republicans should start a tradition of not playing politics with casualties and showing a united front to the rest of the world.

btw, the democrats have clay feet. The whole platform is based on hating the worst part of a war and the candidate has two "un-winnable" wars, maimed people and all, lined up. Put it on the political table and McCain wins. Self-ban is back on.

He was a terrorist like bin Ladin -- just not as effective. (Bin Ladin doesn't smoke pot.)

Ayers:  Dude, let's go bomb the ROTC building.

Dude:  The ROTC building?

Ayers:  Why the fuck are you talking about the ROTC building?

Dude:  I thought you were.

Ayers:  Dude, you're baked.

Dude:  Not as much as you.

Ayers:  Heh, heh, heh.  I'm fried.

65 Based upon my 40 years of experience as a trial lawyer, I am reasonably sure that anytime someone says "to be very frank", or "to tell you the truth", they are lying.

66 My understanding is that Ayers was not thrown in prison and made some guy's girlfriend because of evidence problems in his trial.
If that's the case, I'm not aware that there was a statute of limitations on terrorism.  So, if (heaven forbid) it takes another 20 years to catch Bin Laden...if he gives us the peace sign, all will be forgiven?

67 If Ayers gets thrown under the bus

If the theory that the Ayers people have been the real motive force behind Obama for the past 20 years is true, then that won't happen, he'll have to continue lying about the relationship.  They play very rough behind their upscale fascade.  Obama knows that.

The Chicago Board of Education has traditionally been the main patronage machine for the African-American Democrats, as the Chicago Park District and Streets and Sanitation are (or used to be) the patronage machines for the Irish-American Democrats. It makes some sense, as a good chunk of the students are African-American; the problem is, giving some dumb lunk a job on a garbage truck as a political payoff does nowhere near the harm that putting a similar dumb lunk in charge of school programs or teacher evaluation does. This is the main reason attempts to get more bang from the tax buck out of the Chicago schools has always been so difficult. And why a close look at where that Annenberg challenge money actually went will not be welcomed by a lot of Chicago pols.

Here, I'll save you the trouble: RACIST! HATER!11!
