Senator (For Now) Burris...No I Did Not Try To Raise Money For Blago. And By "Not" I Mean, Yes I Did Try And Raise Money For Him
— DrewM

Patterico has the rundown on Senator (for now) Burris', um, evolving, statements on what actions he took on behalf of Blago. Talk about Change!

Meanwhile, even Democrats are starting to talk about investigating Burris and the truthfulness of his testimony before Illinois House of Representatives.

llinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan led a growing chorus of Democratic officials Monday calling for a deeper investigation of U.S. Sen. Roland Burris' explanation about how he was appointed by now-ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Burris has maintained there was nothing inconsistent between his testimony before state lawmakers and a recently filed affidavit outlining more extensive contact with Blagojevich insiders than he had previously disclosed. But Illinois Republicans pressed their call for a perjury investigation by the county prosecutor in Springfield and on Monday, Democrats expressed increasing discomfort over Burris' evolving explanation of efforts to get the seat.

"This is a particularly frustrating revelation," Madigan said of Burris' recent disclosure that he had contact with five Blagojevich insiders. "I encourage the Sangamon County state's attorney to take a closer look at this in the interest of truth, integrity and transparency."

Blago! You magnificent bastard!

1 Burris isn't going anywhere without a fight (which is why ol' Harry Reid is suddenly all quiet about the guy)--they need him in there when the margin for shoving shit down the American public's gullet is so thin (and potentially getting thinner with the Coleman drama).

3 Ahhhhhh......so what's the problem.  So, to get an appointment to the Senate, he lied to a bunch of Senators who lied to get elected.

He's now a sitting Senator.  It's not like he has a freezer full of cash or something.

Keep hope alive.  And this story.

6 Big surprise, new fraudster (8 billion) investment banker was big Dem bankroller....

as was Madoff...............

The Texas financier accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission Tuesday of “massive ongoing fraud” was a generous political donor who gave more heavily to Democrats.

Since 2000, R. Allen Stanford, the chief of the Stanford Financial Group in Houston, his wife and company gave $2.2 million in political contributions – $1.7 million to Democratic candidates and committees – according to Federal Election Commission records.

The most recent donation on record was $300,000 from Stanford Financial Group to the Democratic Governors Association, a so-called 527 group not subject to campaign contribution limits.

Other big beneficiaries included the Democrats’ congressional campaign committees, which received $1.2 million over the years, and their Republican counterparts, which got $322,000, including a $28,500 personal donation last year to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

7 I figure the Democrats knew this, and that was why their basic opposition was there at first, but they couldn't really say why and had no proof. And Burris is black so they couldn't just say no to him.

I posted this in another thread but it probably works better in this one

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Congress’s approval rating rose 12 percentage points in the last month to 31 percent, the highest level in two years, according to a new poll by Gallup Inc.

The popularity of the Democratic-controlled Congress has more than doubled since July 2008 when only 14 percent of those polled approved of the job lawmakers were doing, according to Gallup.

The jump in Congress’s approval rating was spurred by support from Democrats. In the new poll, 43 percent Democrats gave Congress positive reviews, compared with 19 percent of Republicans and 29 percent of independents.

Lisa Madigan, the Illinois attorney general, is the daughter of Michael Madigan, the speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, and the guy who basically runs the state legislature. Both he and she want to see her become either governor or senator, and sooner rather than later. By the way, if you think Barry is a leftard, wait till you get acquainted with little Lisa: you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Christ, what is it about Cook County? Obama, Blagojevich, Rodham, Emanuel, Burris, Madigan, Jackson ... the list goes on and on. Maybe we should nuke it from orbit: it's the only way to be sure.

Posted by: Brown Line at February 17, 2009 11:23 AM (VrNoa)

32 Sheesh, no one should be surprised.  This is Chicago politics as usual.  Remember, Fitzmas pulled the trigger early in the investigation under the auspices of preventing Blago from appointing anyone.  Meanwhile, the Messiah keeps his robes miraculously clean and untainted.  The One can throw Burris under the bus now that he got his vote for the crap sandwich.  Remember, only Republicans can be guilty of anything criminal or unethical.  And only they should be prosecuted or thrown out of office.

34 As predicted on the stimulus thread earlier, here's the AP's story on the obama stimulus "acceptance" speech citing the Churchill-like quote:

"I don't want to pretend that today marks the end of our economic problems. Nor does it constitute all of what we have to do to turn our economy around. But today does mark the beginning of the end, the beginning of what we need to do to create jobs for Americans scrambling in the wake of layoffs," Obama said.

42 Within weeks of the Amos 'n' Andy Obambi show's premiere, the NAACP anybody not bought & paid for was demanding its cancellation, arguing that the program "tends to strengthen the conclusion among uninformed and prejudiced people the GOP that Negroes Democrats are inferior, lazy, dumb, and dishonest." Critics especially detested the prominence of George "Kingfish" Stevens Blagojevich, a longtime supporting character who became far more central on TV, and whose defining traits were constant malapropisms, shameless greed, and an abiding eagerness to fleece the gullible.
