— Ace I was curious why no one had suggested this earlier. Must be ghastly-expensive.
U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today introduced legislation that would allow the use of advanced directional drilling to tap the vast energy potential of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain without disturbing the unique characteristics of the area.
The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, would allow access to the coastal plains oil and natural gas resources through the use of underground directional drilling from state-owned lands to the west of the refuge and state waters from the north.
Everybody wins with this bill America improves its energy security and the conservation community is ensured that there will be no visible impact on the refuge, Murkowski said. I urge those previously opposed to oil and gas exploration in ANWR to take a fresh look at this issue and show a willingness to compromise.
The legislation seeks to find a compromise with those groups concerned with preserving the 1.5 million acre coastal plain while recognizing the need to improve our energy security and economy by meeting more of our energy needs with domestic production....
Directional drilling would allow energy companies to reach oil deposits up to eight miles away with no surface occupancy in the refuge. Production platforms on state lands and waters would be far away from the calving areas most used by the Porcupine caribou herd that visits the coastal plain in summer.
Again, I figure this is very expensive to do and that's why it hasn't been proposed before.
But now that it has been: Okay, liberals. Are you for ANWR or are you just determined to block energy production?

When Obama says we're going to make "tough decisions" for our future, he means he's determined to force the U.S. off of fossil fuels.
Be it with billions of $$ in tax-payer funded research, subsidies for solar & wind companies, gas taxes, or crippling the oil & coal industries, Obama is making the U.S. go Green.
Not in the next 20 years. Not in the next 10 years.Within the next 3 years.

We aren't just looking to block energy production. Don't be silly. We're just looking to expand the perimeter of ANWR out by 8 miles.

Consequently, the Democrats will be against it. Instead, they will propose clean energy, like putting up windmills in our yard to run our toasters, or re-doing our roofs in solar panels so we'll have enough energy to occasionally run our electric alarm clock. And don't forget the battery powered cars, that's going to work out just fine, especially in SoCal., a place where they already have blackouts during the summer, but I'm pretty sure that Obama promised me that the power grid will soon be powered by feelings of good hope, and well, that means that if libtards start buying electric cars, the grid will have more than enough power for ever and ever and ever. Because Obama said so.

I'm with #7. Porcupine Caribou sounds like a mutated version of caribou with great defense/offense capabilities - not only can it stomple you/impale you on its antlers, but it can launch death quills from a distance and stop most rounds from impacting on its hide.
We need to recruit these Ruminant-Americans to drop into Afghanistan, spreading terror amongst our enemies, defeating their RPGs and impaling their love-lorn fighters on the quills. With hard work and luck, the mating call of the Porcupine Caribou ("bloooort!") may soon be the call of death to our enemies.
It is the least these Scandi sleigh steppers can do.

Markie Marxist sez: "We're determined to block energy production until America is no longer a capitalist country. We mean to destroy capitalism by bringing America down to the level of a third world country so that socialism looks like salvation."
"If you've noticed, we've tried to cut off capitalist America's access to all raw materials. Logging, mining, drilling, hunting, fishing, trapping, even grazing - if you want it, we say that you can't have it. Of course, we never had a problem with the Soviet Union's horrendous environmental behavior, but then, they weren't capitalists were they?"

Frankly, it'd be a worthwhile investment to figure out how to get Pemex into the 21st century in a manner that doesn't pinch Mexico's sovereignty nerve (and gives us access to a share of what comes out.)
Of course, that implies that we've got a rational energy program in this country, which we won't get with Obama's three climate-fraud amigos running the show.

Well, Ace - for the first time ever on your blog I actually have relevant knowlege. Other that nitpicking your poor arithmatic, that is.
I design directional drilling tools so allow me to ramble. This isn't a new technology by any means. While it is more expensive than a vertical or non-deviated well, cost is not a deal-breaker.
The article states an extended reach well of 8 miles. Well, that's pretty damned extended. I think this was a show-off well drilled by some company wanting to showcase it's hot new technology. At least, I'm not aware of any real production well drilled horizontally that far. Maybe 2 of 3 miles is a more realistic number to kick around for keeping costs within reason.
As for why this hasn't been done already - Oil Company X would still need the mineral rights for the land directly under ANWR. You think the Sierra Club is gonna let that fly?
Personally, I think it's great liberal deuches keep our energy sources constrained. When the only oil we can drill is very difficult to get, that drives the need for even better technology, and ensures me of complete job security. How can I lose?

As I recall from my time in the great white north, the main highway running northeast out of Anchorage is lined with chain-link fencing, specifically to keep the damned moose off the road. About every 300 yards or so, there's a one-way, spring-loaded exit from the highway corridor. Kind of like an Injun fish trap. But the moose would still find their way onto the highway, and moose vs. car bustups were common.

That is the gods honest truth. When technologies become available that would allow millions of homes to go "off grid" to a large degree (its not too far off), you can expect government, and democrats in particular, to resist it at every step. Its about the ability to tax. The govt's ability to tax is directly tied to the commerce clause. Anything wholly produced intra-state they can't touch -- which means they NEED "big" solutions or the tax revenue will collapse.

A girl asked "What would America be like if we had no natural resources?" (we later clarified this to cover all "fossil fuels." Our discussion ran the table and included a variety of thoughts ranging from the impact on society and the economy directly to the implications it would have on our foreign policy. At the end of the discussion only one of them still thought fossil fuels were bad because they had been confronted with what America would be like if they were suddenly gone tomorrow. That was when I told them that we have an abundance of resources in America, but the President is doing everything in his power to make them inaccessible. 6th-8th graders get it.
The best thing about this bill is that it makes sense. This is the type of solution you would get from that congress of firefighters in the advertisements. It will be all the more interestign watching the President and the Democrats fight it.

ANWR is 40-60 miles east of Prudhoe Bay and the technology does not exist to directional drill that far.
BP is developing the Liberty field which is 6 to 8 miles offshore north of Prudhoe at a cost of $1.5 billion. God only knows what it would cost to drill from outside of the borders of ANWR.
And for what? To "save" a few thousand acres of God forsaken wilderness that nobody sees? There are thousands of square miles of similar land all over Alaska but the environmentalists don't care about those areas......unless the oil companies show some interest.

No, the upshot of AxL's post was that we can't get ANY of the oil under ANWR because the mineral rights are owned by the Fed. Gov't just like the surface land. You're not allowed to angle drill to get oil from someone else's property. So we've got the same problem with enviro-nuts blocking it.

Also, because the Polar bear is now an endangered species (by virtue of bogus Global Warming claims), oil companies will now find it very difficult indeed to drill anywhere in Alaska. Why do you think they really wanted the Polar Bear listed? Here's some info from a site about polar bears: "a polar bear's home range can be enormous, far greater than that of any other bear. A single polar bear may rove across an area twice as big as the country of Iceland."
Good luck drilling anywhere within any single Polar Bear's range - the ESA will prohibit it.

The value of the ANWR reserves is their relative concentration and their relative proximity to the Pipeline. They are concentrated in an area just (relative, here) north of the Pipeline. Drill from the north, get further away. Drill from the west, get further away. (Conversely, drill from the east or south and you get closer to the Pipeline).
Directional drilling is nothing new, but drilling from further away and having a longer lateral transport path to the Pipeline isn't helpful. The transport infrastructure will give the enviroweenies an issue to throw rocks at and delay, delay, delay....

So why worry about ANWR at all? Clearly the enviros will make it very difficult to explore. Well.......Somewhere there are reams of articles that say, 'ANWR only has MAYBE 1 billion barrels, not enough to justify all the damage so let's just get oil from Saudi and put up windmills.' Ignore them.Throw out all the resource projections you've ever seen. All of the supposed estimates are based on USGS guesswork interpolated from very old data. Exactly one test hole has ever been drilled in ANWR, a joint test well over 30 that was funded by several oil companies. They got the data and so did the feds but the results were not made public. However, out of this one well, the feds have made some pretty low projections. Don't believe them.
Since then, oil exploration technology has dramatically improved and airborne and satellite imagery now allow oil companies to accurately estimate reserves without punching any holes. A buddy of mine is big in the awl bidness; he's one of the world's leading experts in constructing ice roads for exploration and he's been all over the North Slope for 20 years and hears what's going on. He tells me that the inside story is that ANWR has just as much oil on shore as Prudhoe, maybe more and there is more offshore as well.
Prudhoe is the biggest field ever found on US soil and the enviro Democrats want to keep an even bigger field locked up forever........for nothing.

They will oppose any drilling, and use the enviroment as an excuse.
I am a life long Alaskan and have heard all this crap from them. They are preservationist, not enviromentalists or conservationists. They want to stop all development of any kind and force us back into the stone age, and consider mankind a virus on the face of the earth. This is a religion, not a cause and it needs to be exposed to all.
Some common sense is needed here. We need to use our own resources and not be reliant on countries who really don't like us for our energy needs! We also need to inject the added wealth created using our own resources, into our economy to pay down the national debt and help us out of this recession.
What they don't want Americans to find out is that these known oil deposits are much larger than is presently believed, as it will shoot down a big argument they continue to use that we are going to run out of fossil fuels soon. This is one of their big arguments to try to force us to alternative, much more expensive sources of energy. They are really out to destroy the United States, and are using this "enviroment argument" to cripple us and help our competitors gain advantages over us in trade.

EIght miles horizontal? pfffffftttt.
Figure out a way to mount a drill bit on my swollen purple tip and I'll be up there next week. And you'll be calling for well testers and roustabouts the week after that.
Just one request though. Make sure you find a BOP that fits my root. I don't wanna have to buy some numbnuts company a new BOP just cause there's blew apart.

Whether it will work depends on what the geologic formation that holds the oil looks like.
It works in the Bakken because the oil is trapped in a narrow band of shale rock that is laying horizontally. You just have to get the bit into this narrow band, turn it sideways, and drill through that entire layer. It works on shale gas plays the same way.
If the reservoir is vertical, then this won't work so well. You would drill down, turn sideways, then turning your bit down again. If it's a HUGE formation, then the chances of missing what you're drilling for aren't as big, but if it's a little vertical pocket, the chances of missing are huge.
BTW you should see the response real caribou (as opposed to ANWR caribou) have to drilling locations. They climb up on our drill pad sites, which are bare of vegetation and elevated, to get away from the bugs and mosquitos in the grass in the summer. There will be a hundred of them laying up there on the gravel, getting a tan. In the winter, they hang out near the pipeline, because it's warm and keeps them out of the wind.
Sc#$% the pansy ANWR caribou. Tell them to get with the program.
