A new Sienna Poll (pdf) says Hoffman has 35% and Ownes is at 36%. Hoffman already had 50% of Republicans and plurality of independents.
Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence parties candidate, announced Saturday that she is suspending her campaign for the 23rd Congressional District and releasing all her supporters. The state Assemblywoman has not thrown her support to either Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate, or Bill Owens, the Democratic candidate.
"Today, I again seek to act for the good of our community," Ms. Scozzafava wrote in a letter to friends and supporters. "It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so. I am and have always been a proud Republican. It is my hope that with my actions today, my party will emerge stronger and our district and our nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduring strength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations."

Okay, to each their own and all that. She really can't do anything for me because I don't recall seeing her in any 90's Skinemax Light Nite flicks. She did show some brief skin with Bruce Willis in Striking Distance, though.

Let me put it this way, VELVET UNDERGROUND: Dodo sure as heck wasn't stealing a lot of support from the (D), Owens, in the race. She was getting her points from people who identify themselves as (R)'s and from the squishy middle.
Hoffman will be getting all of Dodo's (R) voters, and the rest will go to Owens.

Makes sense to me. Grabs up the people who would simply look at that (R) after the name, and puts them in Hoffman's camp.

Wow. I just saw the news blurb on MSNBC ... no indication of why she dropped out.. no talk of who it helps... no indication that the "independent" candidate is a conservate ... in fact, a non-news follower would see that report and think the GOP is in big trouble if they have to quit days before an election.
They, not the RINOs, not the Democrats, are still our biggest problem.
Though Newt needs to be shaken until he stops listening to them and notices the building momentum of the fiscal conservative movement.

Put the pieces together, morons.
On Friday, four days before the election, you find out you have no money for ads, no people on the ground, and everyone in the Republican is either treating you like a cancer or you no longer exist. What do you do?
Why, you withdraw from the race, immediately, that's what you do. This was the ONLY face-saving move Dodo, the politician, could make. She did it to save face or salvage what she could of her future political career

My bet is if Hoffman wins, and he should as NY-23 is traditionally conservative, he'll stay a (C) until next year's election, while caususing with the (R)'s. Next year, as an incumbent, he'll have both the (C) and the (R) nomination, and if I were to hazard a guess, remain a (C). Of course, that could change after any conversations with Armey, Palin, etc., the new conservative leaders in the (R) party.

Question: Is there a good solid non RINO candidate from the Northeast or West Coast with a good war chest?
Think about it, by looking at the Demunist side: LBJ, Carturd, Clinton, Gore (almost). What do they have in common? From the South. They cut into the GOP base just a *little* bit at least.
I was hoping Mitt would prove to be that candidate from the Northeast or West Coast (Uncle Ron, anyone?) who could at least give the Commiecrats some challenge in those areas.
Posted by: Curmudgeon at October 31, 2009 07:21 AM (ujg0T)
Hoffman will remain a Conservative and a Republican. In New York, if you are running under two or more party lines, you get all the votes received under each. Alot of Republicans (and even a few Dems, like my local city councilman in Queens) run under the major party label AND the Conservative label concurrently. Doug Hoffman, unless he goes full RINO in office, would have no problem getting his name on the ballet under both the GOP and the Conservative lines.
There are quite a few of these "third" parties in New York, and the collection of lines the candidate runs under gives you a pretty fair read on their ideological makeup. A Democrat who is also nominated by the Conservative Party is probably not a leftwing moonbat. A Republican who is also nominated by the Working Families Party (i.e. ACORN) or the Green Party almost certainly is a leftwing moonbat.

Cripple is too strong a word. But the fact is that it is now too late for anyone to take a meaningful position in the fight between the Conservative base and the RINO party establishment. Sarah Palin and Fred Thompson (which we already knew) as well as, perversely, Tim Pawlenty, now have their endorsements in this race to prove that they are of us. Romney and Huckabee don't, and will be haunted by the question "Where were you on NY-23?" until something bigger comes along.

I think this move hands the seat to Hoffman. I can't see DeDe's supporters being split worse than 50/50 (WAGOMP). Throw in a couple more high-profile endorsements and Hoffman walks right into Washington.
That Newt is also proven wrong is the icing on the cake. RINO's just got a rude awakening from the Tea Partiers. Though it might start slowly, I think the importance of issues just became more critical than party or personality. Fiscal responsiblity is the biggest Big Tent: it includes everybody in some way. Combined with a renewed message of Self-Governance by those who posess a true servants' heart, and we have the winning formula to defeat the leftists.

And THIS is the crux of the matter. So-called "fiscal conservative social liberals" are a fraud. This is because:
1. The social issues are now having *real* fiscal impacts (think family breakdown leading to crime, sexuality leading to disease, and illegal aliens leading to crime)
2. The "social liberals" are more often than not LYING and masking their fiscal Commie Lite style of governance.

Just like the pansies on the Left, the anti-Mitt people have to use dumbass insults to get their point across. RINO is to the "born to lose" wing of the Republican Party what "racist" is to the moonbats. A label you throw on anyone you don't want to be heard.
Mitt Romney (despite his detractors) is a great choice for the Republicans (and the country). What are the chances that we'd have an ex-Governor with ties to the West, Midwest and Northeast regions of the country available to run on the ticket? Add the exquisitely serendipitous fact that he had a wildly successful career doing exactly what this country needs most (engineering major economic turnarounds). On top of that, he does seem to have the affable/good-looking thing going for him. When Dems have that, it's called charisma and is worth dozens of magazine covers. When Repubs have it, they're air-heads or puppets.
Go support whoever you want, but ragging on Romney is doing nobody any good.

@239 "Well now all this premature celebration will look really really stupid if Hoffman loses."
Maybe, but more importantly it will increase the outrage against the Repub party machine & its RINO candidates. A Hoffman lose would probably be a better outcome - more pressure to run more conservative candidates and a stronger message to currently serving RINOs.

That's a good question. One thing where he was infinitely preferable to McSquish was that he wouldn't have come across like a senile retard when talking about bidness (and fuck McVain one more time for blaming the economy for his defeat rather than his tonedeaf and idiotic excuse for a campaign). I think during the debate he might've made Odummy look like the economic moron that we know him to be. Mitt's not exactly Mr. Excitement and ultimately the MSM might've torpedoed him in favor of Il Douche, but he couldn't have been more pathetic than the toothless Maverick.

Romney was a dud last year, he's done nothing to improve himself since then, Romneycare hangs around his neck like a Flav clock necklace. The only dumbass around here is you. Romney is a joke, get over it pal. He's shown he doesn't have the chops. He had the chance to become leader of the opposition, he didn't, Palin stepped in and filled the vacuum. He had his chance. He decided to lie low.
OK, then WHO do you want for 2012? Sorry, but I think Jindal and Palin still need more seasoning.
After four years of the man-child President we have now, real experience will resonate with voters then. Perhaps Teh Fred will start EARLY this time and emerge a front runner????
But if Mitt pays his dues, continues to build his warchest and polish his mostly impressive resume, and admits where he botched it on Romneycare and punts the issue to a state by state basis, he may be the one.

-Libs are busybodies who insert themselves into all politics, not just on their own 'side'.
-country club NE repubs exist b/c they're the only repubs who consider public office viable and desirable
-the repub political machine is made up of those 2 groups
-if you want conservative pols, folks need to man up and sacrifice their time and money to be a candidate. no candidate means more RINOs, esp here in the NE
-if you run as a conservative, the new wrinkle is the rest of the country will support you even as the GOP will stab you in the back.
-the thing left to find out is: when you win, you have to lead/govern. How will your supporters keep your feet to the fire? Will they? And how much staying power & impact will the conservative candidates have?

I think (and hope and pray) that someone will emerge that hasn't already got the taint of RINO loss on him or her. While I love DeMint, Inhofe, Coburn, Marco Rubio, even Darryl Issa works for me, that guy Paul Ryan is worth a look. Movie star looks, great solid conservative record, very engaging speaker. Moreover, if hair jokes say more about your ignorance and bad faith than anything else. Romney is smart, has succeeded in both the private and public domains, and has the premier support/campaign network.
Yes, the Mass healthcare thing is an issue that may sink him if he's not careful; if he can't adequately explain his role v. the role of a "real liberal," perhaps the nation's most liberal legislature?
I hope this great blog's comments can avoid degenerating into a high school of empty mockery.

tim3rd has it for the win.
Obviously, the future is unwritten. So prognosticating for 2012 is a bit premature.
But going on what happened in 2008, Mitt WAS the best of the *electable* candidates.
Duncan Hunter, my dream, lacked the war chest and executive office.
Teh Fred wasn't serious and soon enough, hope he learns this for 2012!
Rudy Giuliani was dumping his last trophy wife for a new one,
Huckabee was engaging in some rather dubious tactics (maybe his gig on Fox News will teach him something if he wishes to try again in 2012),
and Juan McAmnesty McLame was, well, just that.
As for 2012 (other than the aforementioned veterans above):
Palin is still a big target in the minds of the mushyheads, and unfortuantely they vote, although I certainly like what she stands for.
Jindal is still young.
Anyone else I need to find out more about still.

When the premise is flawed you have to say "No, no, a thousand times no," as compromising with error only puts you closer to error. Romney concerns me because he strikes me as a deal-maker. Making deals is acceptable if the deal gets you closer to your goal, but making a deal that gives government more control should never, ever be considered, which is why Romneycare should be viewed as intolerable by any conservative or libertarian.
If Romney would have disavowed Romneycare as soon as this debate began I would feel a lot more comfortable with him. Instead, he doubled down. A shame, really, because I think his business acumen would serve us well, but on these big picture issues I question his judgment.
His failure to endorse Hoffman strikes me as an entirely political attempt to stay in favor of the GOP establishment.

An absolute must. The GOP primaries suck because they are (1) front-loaded, (2) often "open" (to sabotage voting and political monkeywrenching) and (3)winner-take-all primaries, where a putz like McLame could win the slightest of pluralities and get all the delegates.

Palin's only, ONLY chance to get to the White House is via the VP route; as the VP for someone who reassures independents that she really isn't a dumb, right-wing extremist. Romney is the perfect pair because NO ONE thinks he isn't very smart; and many people thinks he is too centrist (I think he is center-right). So Romney can burst the Palin bubble of lies; and Palin adds the excitement Romney doesn't have.

1: More conservative candidates for the 2010 races.
True dat. Hoffman is not a victory for 3rd parties, it's a victory for conservatives. I would much rather see actual conservatives and libertarian types take back the Republican party then try to forge a 3rd party. Hell, the libertarians have proven that's a losing proposition.
Of note, three polls taken in Florida over the last few weeks show Crist with a lead of 18 points (averaged). This despite the fact that (a) he is the sitting governor with a 60% approval the last I heard, (b) his opponent has very little name recognition right now, (c) the primary is still far off. With those advantages he still only musters about an 18 point lead.
In fact, I know he's feeling some heat because I am already hearing his ads on the radio out of Jacksonville and they are trying to pimp him as a conservative and claim he was rated #1 governor by Cato.

100% wrong. I live in Massachusetts and while governor, Romney did everything he could to lower taxes and cut spending. And he was not anti-gun. And he was a critic of illegal immigration. He is nothing like John McCain

I think the one that clearly took the most damage over this is Newt Gingrich. Prior to this he was a strong figure in the GOP and wielded a fair amount of influence. In addition he was a favourite MSM "conservative". Politics and showbiz don't like losers and Newt picked wrong, for the wrong reasons and held that position to the bitter end. I suspect he's lost some support in the GOP and the MSM won't be looking to him as an "expert" commentator/pundit as much.
The winner here (besides NY23) are the conservatives both putside and inside the GOP. It's possible to take back the party from the rino's but you better start doing from the inside, on a district by district basis. This election saw a perfect storm coming together. An almost textbook definition of a rino being chosen over a better conservative candidate (DeDe also didn't run a good campaign), the district heads picking a candidate who didn't represent the districts voters, concern about vote splitting actually getting attention of the GOP and real conservatives stepping in (the biggest of course was Sarah Palin) to finally take sides and finally this election becoming less about winning and more about political philosophy (conservatives vs rino). Win or lose the seat, this was good for the party. It's really out on the table now and politicians will be forced to actually choose a side.

They forget to mention that Patkie, former NY governor, endorsed Hoffman, wonder why?

It doesn't have to be Palin or Thompson or anyone we know right now but the important thing is that we think for ourselves and not accept the pre-conditions put on our choices by the media. That is losing the battle before it is fought. If you don't think they can do to Mitt what they did to Palin then you haven't been paying attention. You also encourage their behavior by giving in to them instead of calling them on their bullshit.
If enough seats can be picked up in Congress then it won't matter so much who is president. We can weather that storm either way. The key is getting enough relatively sane people in power who don't think looting makes for good economic policy.
Finally, it is pretty clear that much of the electorate only has a very tenuous grasp of reality. No sane country could elect the monster we just put in office with his affinity for Marxists and terrorists, and his inability to understand even the simplest of issues. I am not sure the cause of this but that is where the bulk of the work will have to be done to save the Republic in the long term. Getting more people into the news networks and academia may be just as important as getting control of the levers of power.
Everything is now political because the left has made it so. The sooner we realize that and act accordingly the better off we will be.

Keep crying, Sally.
You decided Mitt was a "RINO" and that was the end of your thought process. Think for a second, if he was able to win in MA, don't you think he can win nationally? If he was able to rescue massive corporations/endeavors like the Olympics, etc., that he might actually be able to do the job?
You want some Huckabee/Pawlenty/Jindal "pure" candidate and you're gonna get four more years of Obama. Those three are the real RINO's (Republicans Indulging the Needs of Obama).

Why is everyone so happy. People who might have voted for Dede will vote for Owens now.
hahaha, from the mouths of babes ninnies....
Well, erp, it really doesn't matter who wins. We made our point by shunning the candidate foisted upon us by the out-of-touch inept party leaders. We 'won' by supporting Doug Hoffman and forcing the NRCC to drop Dodo.
Maybe we'll 'win' again if Hoffman wins the election. But I think the Democrats will steal this one, too. And in that case, we'll 'win' again when a million conservatives descend upon NY-23 and demand a stop to Democrats stealing elections. We've had enough, erp, from the boobs in the Republican party and the crooks in the Democrat party.
We're winning because we're fighting, for a change, erp.

And I suspect that whereas very, very few would not vote for Romney due to Palin, many people right-of-center will vote for Romney because it puts Palin in position to become President.
A million times no. The point of Sarah Palin is that she's advanced herself through hard work and being right, not by sitting on someone else's coattails (like say, Hildebeast). Palin either gets the nomination or can wait and be Energy Secretary or something. I would not support her as perennial bridesmaid. Or rather I wouldn't support the untrustworthy Mitt Romney to make her such.

We Conservatives are on the verge of 'vetoing" Obamacare, with no White House representation and pretty minimal representation (at least that we chose) in Congress. Why didn't Mitt veto what we're calling Romneycare (and if you don't like the term, maybe you could suggest another)?
Gallup recently released a poll suggesting 40% opf the country consider themselves Conservative, with 35% (or so) moderate and 20% liberal. Do you really think, given what Obama has done to his polls in nine months, that after four years, more than 3 in 4 moderates are going to subject themselves and their kids to 4 more years of him, rather than vote Palin (or any Republican not named Ron Paul)?

The vast majority of the sniping at her from the right is coming from Romney's people. All the assholes in Iowa whom that rotten fucking hack Jonathan Martin quoted to smear her were Romney people. Romney was in favor of the assault weapons ban
Romney supported and had passed the massive healthscam bill for MA
Romney increased taxes and fees in MA.
Ergo Romney is a liberal

No one does "politics" like the Dims. Brass knuckle, head bustin', the truth be damned, the ends just the means. The DemonCrooks have successfully labelled Palin, without the requisite GOP push back, hence her 71% unqualified to be POTUS. Romney? Too many folks will exclude him because he's a Mormon. I honestly don't see any of the current high profile Repubs or conservatives being viable 2012 candidates.
OK, maybe just one, Bachmann, if she and the GOP can mount a counterattack now, against all the Dim detracters mounting their pre-emptive smear campaigns.

Then why doesn't Romney say that? He praises the MA government-run healthcare every chance he gets. And I've seen that pic of him at the bill signing, hamming it up with Ted Kennedy and the rest of the libs. Also, he recently had a painting of himself commissioned with the MA healthcare bill ON HIS DESK. He called it "his greatest accomplishment" or something to that effect. If he got rolled by the legislature, he should come out and say it and disavow the whole abomination. He can't have it both ways and take credit for it while blaming its failure on others.
And since you're accusing anybody who dislikes Mitt as being a Huckabee supporter, Ill tell you right now: I hate Huckabee with a white-hot passion. He's a phony and a lying opportunist, as well as a big-government nanny-stater and a would-be theocrat. While I don't care for Romney, Huckabee's attacks on Romney's religion were despicable, as was that "cross" ad.
