Saturday Potluck Thread: Racing and Movies - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Continuing with Dave and Y-Not's bipolar theme, I present the Saturday Evening Potluck thread.

First up: NASCAR

NASCAR takes the show to the 1.5 mile track at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, KS for the 5-Hour Energy 400 Benefiting Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Whew! That was a mouthful!

The flag waves at 7:30 ET and will be aired on Fox. Click here to read more about the Special Operations Warrior Foundation
.

Leading the pack today are Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano, clocking speeds of 194.253 mph and 193.910 mph respectively. The full lineup can be found HERE.

New paint schemes this week and, of these, I like this the best:

although I bet this will look sweet on the track:

Last week's race at Talladega was a drama-free event for most of the race, save for Keselowski short-cutting across Danica's front end, then this happened. Brad Keselowski, winning friends one accident at a time.

Now, to switch gears...

Two weeks ago we held the first-in-a-series Movie Night With The Morons and, by request, we're hosting it again in two weeks. That would be Saturday, May 24th, for those of you who don't have 14 fingers with which to count.

Since our last gathering, I've been doing a bit of research on streaming sites for both PC's and television. And, at the suggestion of a few Morons, also checked out this nifty little site: CanIStreamIt. You simply search for a movie title and it will return, mostly, the information as to where you can find it. It isn't perfect, but it works really, really well.

If you have a Roku, a Blu-Ray player, or a gaming system, then you might already be familiar with Amazon (and Prime, if you are inclined to pay their fee), Netflix, Mgo, and Vudu, but I've learned that both Blockbuster and RedBox offer streaming as well, although Netflix and RedBox are subscription-based services. And, of course, there's the On-Demand option if you have cable.

For PC viewing, there's Amazon Instant Movies, Blockbuster Now, Mgo, and Vudu. Even You Tube now offers movies-for-rent. Simply search for the movie title and you're likely to see a little green price pop up for one of the video links.

I picked the first movie, so I think it's only fair to let you guys pick the next. Each of these movies has been researched and found to be readily available on a number of the aforementioned streaming services. Several movies which had been suggested by the horde were not so available and thus did not make the cut. I suggest humming Taps while reading the list: Big Trouble In Little China, Bowfinger, Flash Gordon, Ghostbusters, Idiocracy, Roadhouse, and Xanadu. They may become avaialble at a later date, so I'll check back on them. For now, we'll go with what we have.

The ball is in your court. Vote for the THREE movies you'd most like to watch with the Horde and, try to mix it up. It might be nice to play some old school and some older school favorites.

You can only submit your selections once and I'll report the results next Saturday for the following week.

Until next Saturday, how about some elbows from a racing movie?

Consider this an open thread.

Update: Moron Zakn just reminded me. If you choose Amazon, don't forget to use Ace's link in the sidebar.

164 Why would the Rams be pressured more than any other team? And don't say because he's from Mizzou. According to the ESPN Flag ship station here in St. Louis, one of the Rams personal people was high on Sams prior tot he announcement. That person remained high on him after the announcement. So, in otherwords, it appears, at least from initial reports, that the Rams decision was based on his football ability and not his sexual orientation. And he was one of 2 SEC defensive players of the year. So, getting that type of player in the 7th r+ ound may actually be a "value" pick (do I have to pay Mel Kiper royalties now?) What caused his draft stock to fall was his lousy performance at the combine. You can't record a lower 40 time than a lot of offensive linemen.

Posted by: Mallamutt, RINO President for Life at May 10, 2014 03:55 PM (OWjjx)

165 I've got nothing against Sam myself; if anything the Rams might have a steal with him. If anything, he'll probably be more motivated as a player because he doesn't want to be a social pioneer and flop. (Now if only Barky had that sense of honor.) So chin up, Rams fans. But bank on this: there *will* be lots of double entendres.

Nothing  you  have heard in the media about this guy  can be believed.

Beyond  everything else, somebody tell me how the Rams needed another outside pass rusher.  They didn't.  They  don't.  Their defensive line is probably the teams strongest position, especially after they drafted a stud in the first round.

Were  the Rams pressured because of their proximity?  Probably.  It's  a  better explanation than anything else.

198 For all you car nuts out there, I'd like to suggest the BEST car-chase movie no one watches: The Driver, with Ryan O'Neal. I built a truck like he drives in the final chase. This movie rivals Ronin. That said, what is the attraction to NASCAR? Seriously- I've been drag racing all my life- I hate watching it, but LOVE doing it. I can't understand why people watch NASCAR- auto equivalent of the WWF stuff. Fake feuds, trash-talking, everything but the chairs and ladders (infield doesn't count). Don't get me started on the cars- just a fender or three away from Formula 1 crap. Put 20 Camry's with racing tires and a safety system on them, or Impala's or something STOCK, *then* let them fight it out and see who's the best driver. If you can't drive one flat-out for 30 laps and win, you ain't drivin'. With those speeds, REAL fender-bumpin' and cuttin' would go on without the carnage. Bring back STOCK CAR racin'... no wonder LeMons racing is so popular.

222 Heh, I heard on the radio that even Jadaveon Clowney himself sometimes mispronounces his name and he wants to go by just J.D. --or is it JD? In any case, it will be handy to have a J.D. and a J.J. on the same line. As if opposing QBs did not have a hard enough time looking out for the big white guy whose specialty is swatting down passes, now they need to beware the other side of the line. As for my Chiefs, I hope Aaron Murray turns out to be a steal. I do wish they'd have picked Benjamin or at least Lee in Round 1, but I think when Beckham and Cooks went off the board they did not want to go WR.

329 298 -

I don't know how that works with late-rounders.   I assume  they have to earn a roster spot before they get any guaranteed money.

Even  then, other that  signing bonuses, NFL players get paid only as long as the team keeps them.  If you get cut, you're done  getting paid.

Still, that link doesn't make it clear where the quote about thinking he should have been drafted earlier comes from.  Let's wait to see something more solid before we condemn him for being a delusional ingrate.
