1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Saturday, May 10, 2014.  On this day in 1837 the "Panic of 1837 began.  The nation had been enjoying a boom economy with the western expansion.  At that time the pound sterling was the world's reserve currency.  The Bank of England had become worried that they had low reserves so IAW sound banking practices they raised interest rates and reduced lending.  Of course the major banks in the US did the same thing.  This, among other things in the US such as the collapse of cotton prices, caused the panic.  It lasted 7 years.  This shows that these things have been around for a long time and that most of the time when you have boom, sooner or later there will be a bust.

3 A city in CA is set to pass yet another very stupid law.  They want to make "bullying" a crime for everyone down to the age of 5.

The ordinance is aimed at persons, including other youths, who cause anyone from kindergarten to age 25 to feel terrorized, harassed or threatened with no legitimate purpose. It also covers cyberbullying.

It is amazing that stupid do-gooders can never see down the road to evaluate what the effects of their actions are.  I can see it now; "Teacher teacher, Johnny scared me (sticks out tongue at Johnny)".

4 Some people are fighting back at the BS practice of civil forfeiture where the government takes your money and stuff without a trial.  In several recent cases they have wound up in court and the government usually loses when they just do it on their say-so alone.  The problem is; how many people can afford to go to court to fight thugs who have essentially stolen your property? The supreme court upheld the State in civil forfeiture cases but those cases were an outflow of a criminal trial.  The most egregious ruling, however, was the "innocent owner" forfeiture.  A woman whose rented property was being used for drug dealing had that property seized even though she had no part or knowledge in the crimes.  The court upheld that seizure.  This is where I think these abuses come from.  That was a BS ruling then and it is a BS ruling now.

21 The RNC has further tightened the rules for debates for the 2016 primaries.  I think that is mostly good but this statement is virtually ludicrous.

Some party leaders say they believe that the number of debates pushed Mitt Romney to the right in a way that contributed to his loss to President Obama.

What all those multiple candidates did was virtually assure Romney got the nod as the not-Romney vote was split.   And in the end what this is all about is providing them with more control in getting "their man" the nod.  Which they have been doing for a long time anyway.

In the interview, Mr. Paul also stressed his commitment to restoring voting rights for felons, an issue that he said black crowds repeatedly brought up during his speeches.

“The bigger issue actually is whether you get to vote if you have a felony conviction,” he said. “There’s 180,000 people in Kentucky who can’t vote. And I don’t know the racial breakdown, but it’s probably more black than white because they’re convicted felons. And I’m for getting their right to vote back, which is a much bigger deal than showing your driver’s license.”

"....notably, he did not on Friday denounce voter ID laws as bad policy or take back previous statements in which he had said it was not unreasonable for voters to be required to show identification at the polls." Paul believes, as with almost everything, that the laws should be left up to the states. He differs from conservatives and me that there needs to be a federal law on standards, but he is not taking the Democrat's position of every warm body that stumbles by a polling place gets to vote.

...where is the prince who can afford so to cover his country with troops for its defence, as that ten thousand men descending from the clouds might not in many places do an infinite deal of mischief, before a force could be brought together to repel them?   B. Franklin, 1/16/1784, founding the Air Force and the 101st.

Obviously this nation has a very effective grid of defence against yon hot air balloons. Once the current administration powers it down, we will be open to "an infinite deal of mischief." Behind this seemingly unrelated chain of events, I sense the working of a singular, sinister hand.

Sure, different candidates are going to have different positions on everything. We need to find the right one using facts.

79 Hey, I can join in the bashing of MA gov't this morning, from rather far away. I just logged into Ancestry dot com and found someone had posted a link to a database of people, including my ancestors, who were tried for witchcraft: >>This historical database lists over 200 individuals accused of witchcraft in New England between 1647 and 1697. The scope of the list is limited to individuals who were formally accused and underwent a trial process in a town court proceeding. Be aware that many "accusations" took place on an informal basis or did not actually reach trial, hence these individuals would not be listed in the database. Many of those listed in this collection were accused before or after the Salem trial in 1692 and resided in areas outside Salem, most notably Andover, Gloucester, Rowley, and other towns in Massachusetts, as well as towns in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine. The database lists the year the accused stood trial, first and last name, town or village where the trial took place, and the outcome of the trial (confession, acquittal, execution, escape, etc.).

Many years ago, a fellow took off in a balloon from our farm. I was in the ground crew following by car. Going up is cool. Being up there, sailing with the wind, must be beautiful. Coming down.... he managed to get the balloon to clear the power lines before landing crashing in a random cow pasture. I don't even like rollerblades, because (as I learned the hard way), they have no brakes. I'll pass on balloon rides, thanks, even without getting burned up in mid-air.

86 I had a small debate (small because I refuse to engage on someone else's page) with an atheist who claims that Christ never lived and none of the accounts of the Bible are true. "Show me the facts!" was his refrain.

I told him that 1) the person who will cry "show me the facts!" is the same type of person who will discount any fact you choose to bring to him, 2) you have the right to your own opinions but not to your own facts and 3) I won't open a discussion on someone else's dime.

Since then I've refused to engage. Perhaps I am wrong in this, but I am reminded of the first subject of last night's ONT...and that is, it's impossible to debate an issue when the other side keeps moving the goalposts.

I think they have far greater concerns at this point than getting an education like being sold into slavery. Maybe if she holds up another sign they'll give the girls back

103 "...an atheist who claims that Christ never lived and none of the accounts of the Bible are true. Reading Matt, Mark, Luke, and Jack persuaded me, and that was during The Passover Plot days, when 'Jesus never existed' was very pop. An agnostic can dialog, listen, learn, and most atheists seen to be ill-informed agnostics, when pressed. (My usual line: that god you describe? I wouldn't believe that, either.) But, doesn't matter whether the hard-core atheist reads anything; zealotry and dogmatism are not exclusive to religions. Those who are simply contrary for contrariness's sake won't be persuaded by theologizing, either. Even Jesus himself couldn't reform Judas. But for a genuine truth-seeker, willing to be shown, M,M,L, & J are highly recommended. YMMV

There are lots of nice people around who do all kinds of nice things. That would include Athiests who think Jesus was a great teacher, but if you're going by your own power (as opposed to the Holy Spirit) in following. Jesus it's doomed to fail miserably IMO. 142 "Convincing someone of his divinity is another matter." —McCool One must convince oneself. But, that's the thing about the gospel records, the most reliable accounts we have. If you accept that Jesus lived, that e.g. feeding the five thousand and raising Lazarus were not tipped-in-later fables but real, even very public events, that he was brilliant like nobody else, and that he really claimed divinity, that indeed the entire capital charge against him (Jewish, not trumped-up Roman) was his unwavering claim to divinity, that HE actually believed he was God, Son of, described heaven, forgave sins.... You're kind-of left with a major decision of your own: delusional or sane? Delusional is never so solid, consistent, and truth-enhancing as this wonderful teacher. 148 Fen, if you're still looking: I've been meaning to recommend that you might appreciate the scriptural investigations and other writings of chrissythehyphenated over at PoliNation. Also, if you like Vic, you'll probably appreciate PoliNation's acerbic Pistol Pete. It's quieter, and much more garden-like than this old tavern. But please don't let anything take you away from AoSHQ; its not the healthy that need a doctor. PoliNation.WordPress.com Um, if you go there, don't know if you should tell 'em mindful sent ya. Might want to start off on the right foot, instead.

153 Oh, yes, One more thing. Christianity isn't about about doing "nice "things and being responsible. How utterly boring. Not that doing nice things and being responsible is bad, but why would anyone want to follow that or why would you need a suffering and slain leader to have as an example? It's a quest; It's about transformation.into the likeness of Christ which is not without danger and risk or shouldn't be. People being killed daily by Islam understand that. Thus endeth the lesson. ;^) Sorry,

154 Little college pre-'ette went to see Michelle Malkin speak at a pro-life fundraiser. Said she didn't get all the inside jokes, references, etc but otherwise enjoyed it. Also surprised that our small town had so many conservatives.

156 An interesting article asking about the longer term costs of war after the Veterans pass away. The larger theme of the article as I read it and gather is that there are many sacred cows out there and the question is how will we be able to pay for some if not all of these sacred cows. This one talks about a woman who has been in a government instutition since she was 10 and is drawing the survivor benefits of a Civil War Veterans, think about that for a second. We have a woman who is the surviving child of a civil war veteran and the war is almost 200 yrs past. The article then talks about how some of the other wars such as the Cold War, Korea, OEF and OIF we could see benefits in the Trillions being paid out to survivors of veterans. Or at least some folks could be seeing their chance at easy money disappear and petition for their own piece of the pie they think they deserve. With the recent questions about how the Department of Veterans Affairs has screwed just medical care, can you image how they could screw up the survivor benefits for the veterans of OEF and OIF? Payments to those that legally don't deserve payments, from either remarriage or even aren't the biological children of the veterans but are of the spouses? Can we reform the system and should we reform the system? We have a duty to care for the veterans and their immediate family, it is a moral duty based on the sacrifices we asked of the veterans. Yet, where is the line and when do we draw that line on how payments go out and who is eligible for payments?
