Also, you may want to consider droping a few bucks in the Valour-IT fundraising bucket.
I linked to the Navy team because a bunch of HS friends went Navy, so that's a little thank you to them. Whatever team you donate through the money goes to a great cause.
Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, helps provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptop computers and other technology to support Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand wounds and other severe injuries. Technology supplied includes:-Voice-controlled Laptops - Operated by speaking into a microphone or using other adaptive technologies, they allow the wounded to maintain connections with the rest of the world during recovery.
-Wii Video Game Systems - Whole-body game systems increase motivation and speed recovery when used under the guidance of physical therapists in therapy sessions (donated only to medical facilities).
- Personal GPS - Handheld GPS devices build self-confidence and independence by compensating for short-term memory loss and organizational challenges related to severe TBI and severe PTSD.
This is the first I've heard about adding the Wii and GPS items to the effort. I think it's great that the folks at Soldiers' Angels are continuing to adapt the meet the needs of these American heroes.

I thought it was good. Mind you, I wasn't a big fan of the Blair Witch Project (and Paranormal Activity is shot in the same sort of style - home movie like), so I wasn't expecting much. To my surprise, I did like it and expected some terrifying moments. I think the movie's atmosphere is correct and I liked the "theme" (if you go see it, you'll know what I'm talking about). I also think it's one of those movies you have see in the theater to get the full experience because of the unfamiliar surroundings and the audio set-up.
The acting is, meh. It wasn't bad, and it certainly wasn't enough to make the movie unenjoyable. I'd recommend it, if you have the cash.
One more thing. If there's any annoying teenagers in the theater that are disrupting the atmosphere by gigging incessantly or blurting out phases like "fuck my tits", punch them in the face or get them kicked out. When I went to see Paranormal Activity, the theater attendance was sparse (I went last Monday), but some idiot kids almost ruined the experience for me.

Speaking of wind. First time I ever saw "To Kill a Mockingbird" was on TV when I was young, and I caught it right when the scene started of the two kids walking through the woods on Halloween. With the wind blowing, leaves flying, and then they get attacked!
I had NO idea what I was watching, but it sure caught my interest that night!
Of course I now love that film, but that was one hell of an introduction to that movie for me.

Posted by: Dang Straights at October 31, 2009 11:32 AM (Dh+s2)
Ok, something differnt, since this thread seems to include everything.
A Halloween story.
I grew up in Tucson, AZ. One night during the summer a when I was about 15 or so, me and a friend thought it would be fun to spend the whole night awake under a bridge.
(Don't ask).
So this bridge ran across a dry river-bed, and pretty much defined the border between Tucson and the foothills of the Catalina Mountains. As the night went on, less and less traffic crossed the bridge. Maybe one car an hour, if that.
So around 3:00 am or so, me and my friend are just talking or what-not, and suddenly we hear a motorcycle start up. Somewhere above us. And we froze. We weren't aware of anyone being anywhere close to us.
So the bike started crossing the bridge. It sounded like around a 175cc engine. Whoever was driving it was really cranking the engine. We heard him shift from 1st, then 2nd, then getting into third as he crossed above us. And it was like reeeeeeeee, (shift), Reeeeeeeeee, (shift) REEEEEEEEEE....
then nothing...
No sound. It just cut off in mid-whine.
Me and my friend looked at each other with that WTF? look. And we listened . No sound of anyone trying to re-kick a bike. No sound of anything. We then just whispered to each other 'take a look'. I went on one side of the bridge, he went on the other. We stuck our heads up, but no motorcycle. We then got on top of the bridge, looked to the far end but again no-one. The bridge was lit, but the light ended at the other end. Again, no person, no nothing. And even had this person been up the road, it was so quiet that we could have heard anyone trying to re-start a bike. But didn't.
Funny thing is, it really wasn't until a long time later that we realized how odd that was. At the time, heck, just being able to stay up for 24hrs was the cool thing.
Well anyhoo, that's my spooky story for today, since I probably won't be up for the ONT.

My kids and their friends went Trick-Or-Treating throughout the neighborhood tonight.
Turnout was apparently hampered by drizzly weather throughout the day, but a short respite in the early evening was perfectly-timed to allow them to make the candy-run.
<Note that our neighborhood is pretty affluent, with $400K-$750K homes on multi-acre lots.>
After finishing ~80% of the neighborhood, the kids stopped by our house for hot-ciders in the front room. They also used this respite to evaluate their swag -- universally they were pretty appalled at the relative cheapness of the goodies compared with last year and the years before.
I see this "candy-famine" as an indicator of our economy's weakness, or at least of my neighborhood's perception of the economy's weakness.
Also, did anyone else note the significant spike in the prices of Halloween candy this year?
