— Ace Ohh, that's good, chocolatey bias, compelling and rich.
During his three decades in power, Saddam was accused of widespread oppression of political opponents and genocide against Kurds in northern Iraq. His execution means he will never face justice on those charges.
Guess he beat us, huh?

But hey, anything to dampen the enthusiasm about a success in Iraq, and in the larger War on Terror.

Justice for the gassing deaths by poison gas, which we gave to Saddam, is no longer an option.
The real reason lefties are so pissed that Saddam won't get another courtroom appearance...
An opportunity to try and put the US on trial just went swinging by.

Capital punishment has a deterrent effect (obviously the criminal won't be committing any more crimes). After a decade in which Idi Amin died peacefully in Saudi Arabia, Mobutu died peacefully in France (wow, what a coinkidinky), Pol Pot died peacefully in a Cambodian camp, and Bill Clinton was acquitted, this serves as a warning to world leaders who fuck up their nations and schmeg up their neighborhoods: we will find you, and we will kill you.
Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at December 29, 2006 08:02 PM (TGDQC)
Better still, give the body to Disney, have them set up the animatronics and he can actually confess to his crimes, express contrition, and bow down before an image of George W. Bush.
Seriously, is it possible that there is a deeper meaning to what Reuters reported? Is it really possible that liberals feel that punishment isn't justice, but the trial itself is? What kind of mindset is that? Is it born of a radical opposition to any application of capital punishment (except in the case of George Bush)? Is it just that the media takes times like this to show how bend-over-backwards fair it is by arguing that even Saddam Hussein needs to be tried fully and fairly on all counts? What is it?

I admit, I'm on my 10th beer and 5th shot of Grey Goose (sorry, no Valu-Rite on THIS holiday), and I may be rambling like WickedPinto....but if an asteroid destroyed the world tomorrow, I probably wouldn't be too upset. Cnn is the treason channel, no doubt, but Fox is much more liberal than many will admit. MY news channel, if I were a billionaire, would had had a countdown clock and confetti at 10 EDT, if not a live feed of the hanging.
But that's just me.

My name is Rahmad Al Namari. I am a soldier for the glorious and wonderful leader of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, (may God bless him).
I testify, under God, that if anything really bad happens in America, say, a month from now, Saddam had nothing to do with it. The white devils in America are responsible.
I also testify that Saddam, glorious leader of Iraq, never possessed or used chemical weapons.
We love Saddam, glorious and victorious leader of Iraq, and Saddam loves us. Everything I said here today, August 11, 2001, is true.
In Allah,
Rahmad Al Namari

They have taken the bull by the horns and prospered after our removal of Saddam from power. The fact that Saddam is dead, and that he was tried and found guilty by his own countrymen is indeed justice.
The man can only die once, not once per trial.
He was guilty of crimes against humanity, and all the Iraqi people, not just the Kurds.
I'm sure each and every person in Iraq would want a piece of Saddam...
The game is over.
Justice has been served.

"His execution means he will never face justice on those charges."--Yes. Because justice would entail killing him a million times, once for each of his victims. And killing him with Exocets, bullets, knives, meat grinders, using him as cannon fodder and spraying him with Raid and watching him twitch like a dying cockroach.
Instead, we only get to hang him once.
It's not justice, but it's the least we can do.
Posted by: Noel at December 30, 2006 05:08 AM (cdKCL)
I suggest 'gibbeting' for Saddam
1 : GALLOWS 1a
2 : an upright post with a projecting arm for hanging the bodies of executed criminals as a warning
In merry olde England, a criminal's corpse was often displayed in a public place, sometimes until it rotted and fell to the ground in pieces.
Seems fair.

The men who had cruelly dragged that man to death got the death sentence, but that wasn't good enough.
They wanted them deader. And hate crimes legislation would have done that.
But Bush said no.

This asshole needed to die. He needed to die a long time ago. Yeah, we danced with him a few times, but big deal. We do not have God-like powers. We have to make crappy choices sometimes.
The choices we make when we have true discretion are the ones that really count.
We did the right thing in the end. Iraq has a chance now, and an evil turdball is dead.
Our casualties are a reminder of why good nations sometimes hesitate to act.

Sorry to jack thread, but IRT the Kurds, the best part about supporting them is that by protecting their autonomy, we're giving Turkey the finger.
Before the war started in 2003, I was an operations officer in the European theater. As you may recall, the 4th Infantry Division was aboard ship sailing in the Med seeking a port in Turkey. Our NATO ally would not give us clearance for a land invasion and only allowed overflight, so we could only employ one airborne brigade in the north (notwithstanding Spec Ops, who are not equipped for holding ground.) The invasion was left for the 3rd ID to launch from Kuwait, with the 4th ID following on. Had we been capable of opening a large northern front, I honestly believe we would not have the level of violence we have now.
We could have had every single soldier and Marine at the ready in Kuwait, but the limitations of throughput meant that we could only extend our front in the south so far. That left a large part of Iraq unpacified and allowed an effective escape route.
So, when you hear "not enough troops," "bad strategy," etc., you can thank the Turks. There was never any doubt that we would succeed in toppling Saddam, but the Turks chose the wrong side in history.

Bathroom Report
Holy smokes! This place just gets worse and worse. The bathroom is a unisex one-holer. No urinal, just a very small toilet stall. So small, in fact, that to take a crap I had to contort myself in such a fashion that had my right leg resting on top of the toilet paper roll dispenser. Not only was it unconfortable, such a position caused me to shit up my back.
Also the toilet paper consists of poison ivy coated with industrial strength abrasives.
Strangely, even in hell, the toilet seat is cold.
This sucks!

Plus, we're using a pitifully small occupying force who is still kicking total ass, killing ten enemies for every casualty it suffers.
And the conquered people are too f'ing busy buying satellite dishes, new cars, clothes, ipods, Reeboks, TVs, etc. to join the jihad.

When Mr. Hussein came to power three years before the Dujail killings, he ruled over an oil-rich country that was an economic and technical powerhouse in the Middle East with rising cultural and political influence. When he hurtled through the trap door of the gallows Saturday morning, the nation he left behind was a smashed and traumatized remnant, desperately trying to restore its own identity and its place in the world.Al-Jazeera?
