— Ace The city? San Francisco.
As more and more black renters began moving into this mostly white San Francisco Bay Area suburb a few years ago, neighbors started complaining about loud parties, mean pit bulls, blaring car radios, prostitution, drug dealing and muggings of schoolchildren. In 2006, as the influx reached its peak, the police department formed a special crime-fighting unit to deal with the complaints, and authorities began cracking down on tenants in federally subsidized housing.
Now that police unit is the focus of lawsuits by black families who allege the city of 100,000 is orchestrating a campaign to drive them out.
"A lot of people are moving out here looking for a better place to live," said Karen Coleman, a mother of three who came here five years ago from a blighted neighborhood in nearby Pittsburg. "We are trying to raise our kids like everyone else. But they don't want us here."
Update: San Francisco proper has succeeded in driving out half its black population already, so that explains the influx to the suburbs. And yet those tolerant Bay Area liberals seem to have the "Keep moving" signs out.
Thanks to someone2.
Provisional Semi-Correction: Iceman claims that Antioch is not really a true suburb of SF -- too far away to be a real suburb -- and also says it's not really "lefty."
I dunno.
I do know, as that other link notes, that half of the black population has been driven from SF proper via gentrification and soaring rents and anti-business statutes that make it hard for people to earn a living.

Turnabout is fair play and such. Section 8 ruined the neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia whence I grew up. While I was growing up. We were called racists then, for complaining or mentioning the quite obvious problems or attempting to Petition the government.
So, to the Bay Area - in general - fuck you, in the ear. I hate you with the white-hot passion of 10,000 suns.

As for #2, it's really not fair to tar the whole Bay Area with the brush we should reserve for the head loons in San Francisco, and their union brothers in Oakland. Although I got the hell out of there when it got too insane. So, yeah, maybe you are correct.

I bet they would have no problem with that fat bastard Bernie Ward moving in...
"loud parties, mean pit bulls, blaring car radios, prostitution, drug dealing and muggings of schoolchildren"
Black people do this?
Well, isn't it wonderful that the Federal government got involved and moved people who exhibit this tremendously good behavior to good suburbs?
That is one of the benefits of a centrally planned economy, great ideas and great people.

I live in Contra Costa county, though not in Antioch or anywhere near it.
Antioch used to be an old Delta town, but in the 90s it became a new bedroom community for SF commuters. I know a couple of SF cops that live there.
But in the last couple of years, the Contra Costa Housing Authority had the SUPER idea of giving Sect 8 vouchers to blacks from the Richmond housing projects. For those of you who don't live here, Richmond is the 9th most violent city in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES.
Needless to say, the young families that had put down $600,000 to buy a nice new house in Antioch really didn't like having the insanely violent Richmond "ghetto life" transplanted into their town, and said so.
As Michelle Malkin says...."Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccccisssssssst"
It ain't racism, homeboy. It's the mainstream middle class telling to ghetto thugs to fuck off. And these Antioch homowners are NOT backing down.
This fight will not go away.

Handouts usually lead to feelings of entitlement mixed with shame and helplessness, which lead to bad behavior. That's just how it is. Not always, but usually.

Much as I hate to do it, I must point out
that Antioch and Pittsburg are some cons iderable distance away from San Francisco.
I have not lived there in quite a while but my recollection
is that both are not cultura lly similar to SF. (It seems to me that they are more redneck that lots of redn eck places, due to
the refineries (petroleum, sugar), shipping and such around Martinez.)

Saying anything against the purveyors of the "thug life", according to Rev. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, PhD, Assholes, is totally white racism against poor blacks.
This shit gets promulgated through out our educational system, media...
And the result: stupid people and stupid ideas and violent maniacs getting away with murder, literally.

In 2006, as the influx reached understandable African-American status-seeking diaspora reached its peak, the police department formed a special military-style crime-fighting unit to isolate problem areas racially profile against non-white residents deal with the complaints, and. Authorities began cracking down on tenants in federally subsidized housing by harassing them, denying them their First Amendment rights to free speech, denying them free assembly, penalizing them for their choice in canine companionship, and arresting them for consensual sex for mutually agreed-upon remuneration.

When you read the kinds of activities that come with the new neighbors is race really a factor?
If you're an inconsiderate jerk hosting loud late night parties while you're endangering the lives and limbs of those you live near by keeping vicious dogs, gosh I think I'd want you gone.
Pointing to the color of your skin is not really an adequate defense for being a complete jerk.

They had to be educated on how to live in a better neighborhood, and this education often involved a visit from the cops. Most of them did get with the program and became entirely tolerable. They were not 'driven out' on racial grounds. The very notion is retarded and retrograde.
That people should think they are being 'driven out' of an area because their neighbors insist on having a safe, quiet place to live is beyond the pale. They need to be laughed at and relentlessly cluebatted into Realityland.

Antioch, at least 10 year ago when I lived close to there in Clayton for 25 years, was considered "East County" as in Contra Costa. It's politics at the time were more "Red State" Central Valley in nature although many commuted to San Francisco and Oakland for employment.
Having lived in Mexico from 1998 until 2006 and in Central Texas for the last two years, one fact remains constantly evident. As population density increases dependency on government increases. Independence seems, in part, to rely on isolation from a clammering hive culture. Although a libertarian republican, I do believe something must occur to reduce global population density.
Major wars, economic depressions, and epidemics have served this process historically.
Sadly, that's probably going to have to occur again.
I'm old enough to hope it doesn't happen to me and mine again as it did the '40s and before until I'm gone.
My wife and I have replaced ourselves; that enough. 1x1 is about at far as I want to go with fruitful multiplication as it relates to the earth's human populace without new galactic horizons.

It's not a race thing, just a quality of life issue. These people move away from their hellholes and then turn their new neighborhoods into hellholes from which they want to escape. Talk about a cycle of hellholes.
Yeah, but the point to be made is that a lot of limosine lefties only think paying people to ruin a neighborhood is a bad idea if it is theirs. The idea was a bad one, whether the neighborhood to receive these people is a blue collar, white one (racists!!!), or the more affluent kinds of places like SanFran full of proggs.

Let's not have a coast vs. coast war, OK? SF Libs suck even more than Boston, NY or DC Libs suck.
That said, understand the full story behind this: San Fransicko leftists, who claim to be "progressive" and humanistic, "gentrified" their neighborhoods, and, with Section 8 welfare payments, exported their ghettos out to the exurbs, of which Antioch is one.
Antioch is one of those places that people seeking affordable homes and a safe place to raise their families fled to, away from San Fransicko. Until this happened.
This is about the long arm of San Fransicko coming out to get them. We can run from the leftists, but we can't hide.

Enough slamming the east and west coasts. Although I must say that when the rest of the country exported all of it's hippies and fruits in a Mariel-styled campaign that ran through the 60's and 70's, you really fucked California...
Anyhow, this isn't about race. It's all about ghetto thuggery being forced into established society, and established society saying "Fuck this!". The fact that it's happening within commute distance to SF and Berkeley seems ironic, but that's if you paint all of the Bay Area as nutcases. Guess what, the squeaky wheel gets the media grease, but it doesn't mean that a whole lot of us aren't resisting.
It's like the rest of the world looking at America and saying "Gee, they've all finally come to their senses now that obama has been elected"...Well, it wasn't all of us that voted for that little fuckweasel. A whole lot of Californians feel just as hijacked in our lives locally as we all now do nationally. It doesn't feel good, does it? Well, that's the life we've led here. Doesn't mean we quit. So quit painting us all with the liberal brush. We're all fighting the same fight. The good folks of Antioch are simply pushing back.

Exactly. And it boggles my mind why people insist on making it about race or ethnicity when it's really about middle-class homeowners and low-income renters who aspire to be middle-class and who are clueful and responsible enough to improve their status with a little assistance, versus the socio-economic class colloquially known as "trash." And for the low-income renters of ANY race to successfully assimilate into respectable middle-class lifestyles, it's necessary to weed out the trash elements with diligent policing, even if this means that Persons Of Color will in some cases be "disproportionately affected."

Folks, I work in and for the city of San Francisco. I have for years. I moved to SF in 1973 and lived there until 1999 when I was essentially driven out of my neighborhood my an influx of "homeless" and "homeless youth" who drove us all nuts and were a social disaster.
In the 1990s, when the dot com boom hit here, we had an influx of thousands and thousands of "young, hip, tech savvy" boneheads who came here from all over the country. Most had college degrees in such vital areas as English lit, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Women's Studies and other critical fields.
When the dot com went bust, the leftards stayed here and took jobs at Starbucks with all the other losers. They also registerd to vote.
Over the last 10-12 years, this city has been ruined. Our ever "progressvie" excuse for a city government has instituted every nutcase idea the "progressives" could come up with. Banning plastic bags, more and more taxes on business, mandatory health insurance, a minimum "living wage" of $11.54 this year, draconian rent control, anti-car laws, etc.
Anyone who comes here can see the result. The rich live well as they always have. The working poor live in filthy slums in crappy neighborhood because "neighboorhood activists" fight every attempt to fix up the neighboorhood or build any new market rate housing. So, the slums decay and the poor illegally subdivide apartments to be able to afford them by sub-renting to others.
Driving here is impossible. Bikes are god, cars are evil. Whole lanes of major streets are being ripped out for bike lanes. It is impossible to build any parking garages, as this is a "transit first" city. Nevermind that the local bus system resembles Bolivia and you will likely sit next to a psychotic vagrant or a puking drunk. All it's missing is the chickens on the roof.
This city is 6% black. When I moved here, it was almost 20% black. They left as the black neighboorhoods deteriorated, the gangs became more and more violent, the schools turned to shit, etc. Middle class blacks left in DROVES. The other reason for the black decline is actually the result of the Clinton Admin's Hope VI public housing. Old projects were torn down and replaced with townhouse type dwellings, with a mandate to house X number of employed people. All the problem tenants were not allowed to move back into the new units, thus thousands of them were shut out and left.
I remember when they tore down the first two big projects. A cop friend of mine told me that crime in SF went down 30% just from the demolition of those two projects. Still today, about 80% of violent crime in SF takes place within six blocks of a project.
The white middle class is gone from SF. They were driven out by school bussing, filthy streets, filthy, dangerous busses, "the homeless", etc. Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, San Ramon and other suburban cities to the east of SF are now rich and prosperous due to the influx of SF's middle class.
The Asian immigrants still come here. They need the connection to the old country and its customs and languages, but their kids leave for the burbs like everyone else.
The "homeless" scam is a nightmare here. We have 8000 single adults on general assistance. No time limit, no rules. We have dozens of free shelters, free food, free medical care, free everything, all funded with local tax money. No wonder they come here.
Sorry for the long post, but I want you all to understand that not everyone here is a bad person, and not everyone like SF the way it is. We are, simply, outvoted by leftist retards who vote in the insanity we have today.
Don't let it happen to your town. If it does, leave.

The uber-rich neo-liberal ELITISTS will simply persist in boycotting any undesirables from THEIR neck of the bay, coastal hills or Sierra Nevadas. And the rich WILL profit from mass purchases of developed properties at pennies on the dollar during this crunch that's ruining the "middle class" stability.
The working class are already subjugated to horrific taxation to benefit the illegal aliens and the poor on welfare. There just aren't enough taxpayers in California to pay the neo-liberal progressive piper to keep the state's raft afloat now that the crash continues to crash. CA, for all of her natural beauty, is going down the shit hole fast.
Still hosting the New Orleans' Katrina refugees who won't work and won't go home, Texans can empathize with the working class frustrations of subjugation to neo-liberal uber-property taxation, watching neighborhood single family housing properties being confiscated by banks and then re-sold to unidentified investors who flip them into multi-family rentals against deed restrictions, and city officials turning a blind eye as crime rates soar along with tax rates.

And there is somewhat of a black middle/working class here, but it's very small compared to other parts of the country. Smart, educated, and upper-middle-class blacks who have their shit together actually don't like the Bay Area very much, because there aren't enough other blacks here like them to socialize with / date / etc. -- I've known a few who hated it here and were much happier in L.A., D.C., and New York. (Though one guy I knew still liked it here better than Boston -- he once said "never again will I live in a state that starts with "Massa.")
Other posters have already pointed out that the phenomenon in the article is not a racial issue, it's a trash issue, and trash comes in all colors.
Oh, and sickinmass, thanks for the chowder offer, but you might have me mixed up with alexthechick, who I think might have added "thechick" to distinguish herself from me. I keed, but I actually liked the folks in Boston just fine for the most part, as much as anywhere else I've been.

for all these people in downtown San Francisco.I heard she is also going to give them free stays in her hotels
and free meals in her restaurants and all they can drink from her winery. This will show people that she is a true liberal. By the way that 757 she flies from DC to san fran is going to stop and pick up po people and take them to

Turnabout is fair play and such. Section 8 ruined the neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia whence I grew up. While I was growing up. We were called racists then, for complaining or mentioning the quite obvious problems or attempting to Petition the government.
I just returned from my family home in Mayfair, Northeast Philadelphia. I was going reference it but you beat me to it.
Christmas night was great at Mom's house, except for the family two doors down, where loud fights over who disrespected whom broke out.
It's not new to most urban folk. Thirty years ago my parents had to pull me and my sister out of the neighborhood public school after an experiment with forced busing went bad. Worst part was my Mom taught at the school for 25 years.
It's an extremely sensitive issue. The dated, feel-good liberal slogans don't cut it. Most families who go through it know not to speak about it. Welcome to our world, San Fran. Keep your mouth shut.

What gets me is the imbeciles who believe that moving a bunch of welfare queens out of high crime areas into low suburbs will make typical suburbanites out of them.
But we bused their academically struggling kids into middle class schools and that made solid middle class students out of them.
Oh.
Wow, these social experiments are complicated.

We left Contra Costa County 14 years ago and moved to a red (Southern) state. (Industrial business pushed out of the Bay Area due to environmental standards) In many ways it's been a hard adjustment I am a second generation Californian and so is my (X) husband. Our kids were born there. But so much of the state has gone to shit. I have 3 siblings that live there still, and two of them want out BAD. The state politics have been going downhill for years and just get worse. God, I just can't even believe Jerry Brown wants to run for the govenor again. Talk about a one man dynasty! Y'all are right about San Francisco, it is now a city of the have and the have nots. But it was going in that direction for a long, long time. I fear that the whole state will be that in time.
Sorry, but I always thought Antioch was on the verge of being a shithole. Sounds like the elites in SF, Oakland, Berkley used it as a dumping ground.

Wissinoming.
I guess you don't read Philadelphia Magazine. The Northeast was a wasteland of boring, working class white people (teh racsiss'!) who fled out of fear of wonderful, lustrous diversity. Now that cops get shot at in the Northeast, it must be much more "interesting."
I actually have occasion to travel through the Northeast about once a week, and it breaks my heart each time. What they don't understand - it's the loss of institutions and a way of life that hurts the worst.

Yo. I lived a few blocks from Wiss Park. Across from Frankford Ave.

Is that the current issue, or overall? My boss said I have to read the current issue about a guy's return to the NE.
The tired, liberal portrayal of the NE would be the same as the tired, liberal potrayal of the suburbs. Boring and bland. Just a bunch of hard-working, taxpaying, sacrificing, family-supporting, non-complaining rednecks. Indeed, they afraid of diversity and all the benefits it brings.
Philadelphia has two pockets of taxpayers - the downtown, upper income childless professionals, and the blue collar dopes of the NE. They pay the bulk of governent social services used by the rest of the city, and the NE families flee as soon as they can.
Funny, the experience of Alec, and me and others I know is one of the great untold stories of 20th century America. Three generations of my family had to flee that once-proud city. Some of it's economic, most of its political and cultural. Eventually, conservatives are going to start telling these stories in public.

Every major city, including KCMO has neighborhoods that were low cost, low quality of life that have been taken back and are now desirable places to live. It is the reverse process of downgrading a particular area - good people move in because it is affordable, they upgrade the property and take an active interest in the neighborhood and the local schools. They call the police, they file protests when the police don't act, they form neighborhood watch associations and neighborhood action committees that fight the loud parties, mean dogs, drug houses and hookers. Eventually the problems disappear because the problems move away and more people looking for a quality of life move in, rehabilitate a home and so on.
This is the reverse pyramid that grows slowly through the first two or three tiers then really takes off. The same thing applies with the downgrading of a neighborhood, with the upright pyramid - the first couple of tiers takes a while then it really takes off.
On my many visits to San Francisco (my nephew lives there and my aunt lives in San Jose) the only thing that really sticks in my mind is Mark Twain, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
As to my many trips back east (I go to Maine about once every couple of months), the big item that sticks out about Boston (downtown) is the fact that it is virtually impossible to find a place that serves breakfast (eggs, meat, potatos), while you can get coffee and a donut or muffin in about four places every block.

In my experience in Cincinnati and Columbus, the terms vary including urban renewal, Downtown revitalization, neighborhood rehabilitation, etc. It's all gentrification, basically. I also have no problem with it. Get rid of the troublemakers and property value gets back to normal. The only problem with gentrification is that the troublemakers have to go somewhere and the area of town that suffers the most is usually the recipient of the dirtbags. It just goes round and round. I don't think there is any true solution to the problem, besides outright extermination of the libtards.

The article (from a self-described 'white liberal' who drives a VW Bug) beats around the bush - the author falls back on the meme that 'this happens to all neighborhoods' and that he ought to control his sentimentality.
The fact of the matter is, with the other neighborhoods, the shitcanning wasn't subsidized by the Federal Government and administered by a bunch of white liberal assholes trying to teach other adults a lesson about 'diversity' by ruining their communities.

The same assholes also administered the same destruction of the schools, for the same reason. It was a comprehensive lesson.

That's a stereotype I know, but they (the SF Gay Community) were already making SF into the socialist center of the country. I was military and when I had to shoot a weapon or take someone to be familiarized with weapons, it required driving across the GGB and into Marin county to even find a firing range.
Even back then, SF was a city that was hostile to the military, unfriendly to families, and just all-around shitty. Not as bad as Oakland maybe, but sure as hell in the running.
I lived at the corner of 15th Street and California avenue, and that entire area, once the Presidio of SF, with its long military history, was turned over to the city, about $15 Bn worth of real estate. They wanted to build an AIDS hospital on the property. But they couldn't get enough people willing to move there to staff the hospital to take care of the SF assrammers and their pet disease/cause celeb.
Go figure,huh?
Guess who has his international HQ on the Presidio? Gorbachev, that's who.
And his communistic ass gets everything free and paid for by the Gubmint, that's us, as in US, and his sorry ass gets a free ride.
Sumbitch constantly criticizes the US and lives off the dole like a welfare bitch in the LA projects.
Bet some of you didn't know that, didja?
I enjoyed the year and a half I lived there, in the relatively safe and sane confines of the well patrolled and well ordered Presidio, away from the freaks, ass rammers and other denizens of Hanoi on the Bay.
I miss my friends and all that, but not really the city. Other than their decent aquarium, that place sucks ass, literally.
I used to live there, and I say the city is dying and needs to die. And its freak ass culture with it. When it's gone, good riddance.
That's my $.02.

I think a couple of people I knew were originally from Cali and moved over around San Jose, but SJ has its own share of gangs and shit, and it's is pretty pricey there, too, at least it was back in the day. So, same- same. Right?
Bet that hasn't changed. Imagine paying for the privilege of living in a shitty, hostile city. Oh, that's right: Any conservative living in a major city in this country is living in a shitty, hostile situation because Libtards run/fuck up the cities.
Again, go figure.
That's why I live out in the country, in the South.

Jean 77 and Scott 97-
You are both dead on with your points. I live (17 years now) at ground zero of the town being referenced in the article, the same town being sued by the section 8 tenents being wound up by the usual suspects from the radical lawyers club. The article is old news, but pretty well spells out the end result of a town being overrun by a small segment of people you can only describe as a bunch of urban, disorderly, and occasionally violent hillbillies.
Racist my town ain't, and it's a whole lot more "micro-diverse" than the lefty towns closer to and including Frisco. This includes Mex-Ams, Filipinos, whites, and blacks who all live on the same block as me.
One bunch can (and has) ruined a whole couple of blocks in every direction.
The cops started to deal with it, after falling behind the curve..
And RLS at 114, your point on housing values is well taken and spot on. Due in some part to both overbuilding and the increase in disorder, my (admittedly overinflated at the top) crib is now down 60% from peak in mid 2005.
Happy New Year, all.

I guess you weren't running in the right circles, Enter Sandman. However, you have seen enough of the politics and freaks to know that the City is doomed...for a while.
The conservative Chinese (and they value hard work, education, family) will outstrip the gays, since the gays can't procreate. Currently...
It used to be a patriotic town, before the hippie/gay Mariel boatlift that was the 60's and 70's.
Thank you all for sending your refuse to SF.

It would have been nice if they had showed a bit of solidarity a decade or so ago when it was other people's neighborhoods being ruined. Our house was worth but a fraction of those 600K houses, but it was ours, and my parents bought and paid for it with their earnings.
Posted by: Alec Leamas at December 31, 2008 02:45 PM (AlKlj)
They're 'do as I say, not as I do' NIMBY limousine liberals. What'd you really expect?
And I must correct something you said. The problem has been around a lot longer than a decade or so. Go back to the '60's. That's when it all started. The Great Friggin' Society. The infamous legacy of another Texan, but that one was a Democrat.
Back in 1978, I was a guest being driven by a friend's father, four of us heading to Canarsie, Brooklyn from Jersey. They took a detour, just for me, to the old neighborhood, East New York. The scenes I witnessed that day as we drove left my mouth agape, and were right out of the movies. It was cold and overcast, with trash -- being hurried along by the wind -- strewn all about. Every couple of blocks or so were 50 gallon drums, flames flickering, being used for warmth by a not very inviting number of shivering people. Of course, busing from the early '70's (starting with Boston, IIRC). But it all goes back longer than a decade or so, it goes back to that bastard, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

The Bay Area is structured like this. In descending order, SF, Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and maybe some Marin communities are the black holes from which the liberal pretentiousness emanates. (Remember, if a black hole is sucking in matter, it gives off radiation as normal matter breaks down at the event horizon.) But they're maybe 1,000,000 of the Bay Area's population of 7.5 people. The rest of the area consists of communities with a separate identity from them, although heavily influenced by them, in the manner of a love-hate-we-are-we-aren't relationship. Antioch falls in that zone along with many other communities.

The only way to clean up a slum is to incarcerate those individuals who make it a slum. Instead of pouring money into welfare, pour it into policing. Build more prisons. When the bad apples commit crimes, lock them up. Get them off the street. Keep doing this and over time the living conditions within the area will improve as the dregs of that society are removed from the equation. The citizens of that community should be encouraged to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. An armed society is a safe and polite society. Thugs and drug dealers will have a harder time intimidating people who have the power to shoot back, and the blood of dead criminals makes an excellent detergent, washing away fear and hopelessness.
The difference between a poor community and a slum is the quality of the residents. Without people, all you have are empty buildings. Slums aren't a matter of economics or even geography, but of sociology, psychology, and criminology. Solving the problem requires that the proper tools be applied in the proper way. Be the rock upon which the bad apples break themselves.
