I live in Contra Costa county, though not in Antioch or anywhere near it.

Antioch used to be an old Delta town, but in the 90s it became a new bedroom community for SF commuters. I know a couple of SF cops that live there.

But in the last couple of years, the Contra Costa Housing Authority had the SUPER idea of giving Sect 8 vouchers to blacks from the Richmond housing projects. For those of you who don't live here, Richmond is the 9th most violent city in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES.

Needless to say, the young families that had put down $600,000 to buy a nice new house in Antioch really didn't like having the insanely violent Richmond "ghetto life" transplanted into their town, and said so.

Antioch, at least 10 year ago when I lived close to there in Clayton for 25 years, was considered "East County" as in Contra Costa.  It's politics at the time were more "Red State" Central Valley in nature although many commuted to San Francisco and Oakland for employment. 

Having lived in Mexico from 1998 until 2006 and in Central Texas for the last two years, one fact remains constantly evident.  As population density increases dependency on government increases.  Independence seems, in part, to rely on isolation from a clammering hive culture.  Although a libertarian republican, I do believe something must occur to reduce global population density. 

Major wars, economic depressions, and epidemics have served this process historically. 

Sadly, that's probably going to have to occur again.

I'm old enough to hope it doesn't happen to me and mine again as it did the '40s and before until I'm gone.

Folks, I work in and for the city of San Francisco. I have for years. I moved to SF in 1973 and lived there until 1999 when I was essentially driven out of my neighborhood my an influx of "homeless" and "homeless youth" who drove us all nuts and were a social disaster.

In the 1990s, when the dot com boom hit here, we had an influx of thousands and thousands of "young, hip, tech savvy" boneheads who came here from all over the country. Most had college degrees in such vital areas as English lit, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, Women's Studies and other critical fields.

When the dot com went bust, the leftards stayed here and took jobs at Starbucks with all the other losers. They also registerd to vote.

Over the last 10-12 years, this city has been ruined. Our ever "progressvie" excuse for a city government has instituted every nutcase idea the "progressives" could come up with. Banning plastic bags, more and more taxes on business, mandatory health insurance, a minimum "living wage" of $11.54 this year, draconian rent control, anti-car laws, etc.

Anyone who comes here can see the result. The rich live well as they always have. The working poor live in filthy slums in crappy neighborhood because "neighboorhood activists" fight every attempt to fix up the neighboorhood or build any new market rate housing. So, the slums decay and the poor illegally subdivide apartments to be able to afford them by sub-renting to others.

Driving here is impossible. Bikes are god, cars are evil. Whole lanes of major streets are being ripped out for bike lanes. It is impossible to build any parking garages, as this is a "transit first" city. Nevermind that the local bus system resembles Bolivia and you will likely sit next to a psychotic vagrant or a puking drunk. All it's missing is the chickens on the roof.

This city is 6% black. When I moved here, it was almost 20% black. They left as the black neighboorhoods deteriorated, the gangs became more and more violent, the schools turned to shit, etc. Middle class blacks left in DROVES. The other reason for the black decline is actually the result of the Clinton Admin's Hope VI public housing. Old projects were torn down and replaced with townhouse type dwellings, with a mandate to house X number of employed people. All the problem tenants were not allowed to move back into the new units, thus thousands of them were shut out and left.

I remember when they tore down the first two big projects. A cop friend of mine told me that crime in SF went down 30% just from the demolition of those two projects. Still today, about 80% of violent crime in SF takes place within six blocks of a project.

The white middle class is gone from SF. They were driven out by school bussing, filthy streets, filthy, dangerous busses, "the homeless", etc. Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, San Ramon and other suburban cities to the east of SF are now rich and prosperous due to the influx of SF's middle class.

The Asian immigrants still come here. They need the connection to the old country and its customs and languages, but their kids leave for the burbs like everyone else.

The "homeless" scam is a nightmare here. We have 8000 single adults on general assistance. No time limit, no rules. We have dozens of free shelters, free food, free medical care, free everything, all funded with local tax money. No wonder they come here.

Sorry for the long post, but I want you all to understand that not everyone here is a bad person, and not everyone like SF the way it is. We are, simply, outvoted by leftist retards who vote in the insanity we have today.

99 Scott, right there with you but I get by OK here.  Got a job paying enough to afford a house here, if I can find one and I don't get laid off next year.  I commute by motorcycle and have lived here long enough to know where to find street parking just about anywhere.  But yeah, I wish the stupidvisors would spend more time fixing potholes than regulating what Walgreen's can sell you, what kind of bag they can put it in, and what they can pay their employees.  The pain-in-the-ass "progressive" voters here are not just the young hipsters, however: aging leftover hippies make up a pretty big chunk of them also.

And there is somewhat of a black middle/working class here, but it's very small compared to other parts of the country.  Smart, educated, and upper-middle-class blacks who have their shit together actually don't like the Bay Area very much, because there aren't enough other blacks here like them to socialize with / date / etc. -- I've known a few who hated it here and were much happier in L.A., D.C., and New York.  (Though one guy I knew still liked it here better than Boston -- he once said "never again will I live in a state that starts with "Massa.")

Other posters have already pointed out that the phenomenon in the article is not a racial issue, it's a trash issue, and trash comes in all colors.

Christmas night was great at Mom's house, except for the family two doors down, where loud fights over who disrespected whom broke out.

It's not new to most urban folk. Thirty years ago my parents had to pull me and my sister out of the neighborhood public school after an experiment with forced busing went bad. Worst part was my Mom taught at the school for 25 years.

We left Contra Costa County 14 years ago and moved to a red (Southern) state. (Industrial business pushed out of the Bay Area due to environmental standards) In many ways it's been a hard adjustment I am a second generation Californian and so is my (X) husband. Our kids were born there. But so much of the state has gone to shit.  I have 3 siblings that live there still, and two of them want out BAD.  The state politics have been going downhill for years and just get worse. God, I just can't even believe Jerry Brown wants to run for the govenor again.  Talk about a one man dynasty! Y'all are right about San Francisco, it is now a city of the have and the have nots.  But it was going in that direction for a long, long time.  I fear that the whole state will be that in time.

Sorry, but I always thought Antioch was on the verge of being a shithole.  Sounds like the elites in SF, Oakland, Berkley used it as a dumping ground.

The tired, liberal portrayal of the NE would be the same as the tired, liberal potrayal of the suburbs. Boring and bland. Just a bunch of hard-working, taxpaying, sacrificing, family-supporting, non-complaining rednecks. Indeed, they afraid of diversity and all the benefits it brings.

Philadelphia has two pockets of taxpayers - the downtown, upper income childless professionals, and the blue collar dopes of the NE. They pay the bulk of governent social services used by the rest of the city, and the NE families flee as soon as they can.

Funny, the experience of Alec, and me and others I know is one of the great untold stories of 20th century America. Three generations of my family had to flee that once-proud city. Some of it's economic, most of its political and cultural. Eventually, conservatives are going to start telling these stories in public.

114 There aren't any bad neighborhoods, just bad people that live in them.  You can tell the quality of the neighborhood by the property values.  Where property values are high or rising, that means that the quality of life is desirable in that area.  Where they are decreasing or low, people who look at quality of life do not want to live there.  And they do not want to live there because of the existing quality of life.

Every major city, including KCMO has neighborhoods that were low cost, low quality of life that have been taken back and are now desirable places to live.  It is the reverse process of downgrading a particular area - good people move in because it is affordable, they upgrade the property and take an active interest in the neighborhood and the local schools.  They call the police, they file protests when the police don't act, they form neighborhood watch associations and neighborhood action committees that fight the loud parties, mean dogs, drug houses and hookers.  Eventually the problems disappear because the problems move away and more people looking for a quality of life move in, rehabilitate a home and so on.

This is the reverse pyramid that grows slowly through the first two or three tiers then really takes off.  The same thing applies with the downgrading of a neighborhood, with the upright pyramid - the first couple of tiers takes a while then it really takes off.

On my many visits to San Francisco (my nephew lives there and my aunt lives in San Jose) the only thing that really sticks in my mind is Mark Twain, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

As to my many trips back east (I go to Maine about once every couple of months), the big item that sticks out about Boston (downtown) is the fact that it is virtually impossible to find a place that serves breakfast (eggs, meat, potatos), while you can get coffee and a donut or muffin in about four places every block.

In my experience in Cincinnati and Columbus, the terms vary including urban renewal, Downtown revitalization, neighborhood rehabilitation, etc. It's all gentrification, basically. I also have no problem with it. Get rid of the troublemakers and property value gets back to normal. The only problem with gentrification is that the troublemakers have to go somewhere and the area of town that suffers the most is usually the recipient of the dirtbags. It just goes round and round. I don't think there is any true solution to the problem, besides outright extermination of the libtards.

I lived at the corner of 15th Street and California avenue, and that entire area, once the Presidio of SF, with its long military history, was turned over to the city, about $15 Bn worth of real estate. They wanted to build an AIDS hospital on the property. But they couldn't get enough people willing to move there to staff the hospital to take care of the SF assrammers and their pet disease/cause celeb.

I live (17 years now) at ground zero of the town being referenced in the article, the same town being sued by the section 8 tenents being wound up by the usual suspects from the radical lawyers club. The article is old news, but pretty well spells out the end result of a town being overrun by a small segment of people you can only describe as a bunch of urban, disorderly, and occasionally violent hillbillies.

Racist my town ain't, and it's a whole lot more "micro-diverse" than the lefty towns closer to and including Frisco. This includes Mex-Ams, Filipinos, whites, and blacks who all live on the same block as me.

One bunch can (and has) ruined a whole couple of blocks in every direction.

The cops started to deal with it, after falling behind the curve..

And RLS at 114, your point on housing values is well taken and spot on. Due in some part to both overbuilding and the increase in disorder, my (admittedly overinflated at the top) crib is now down 60% from peak in mid 2005.

It would have been nice if they had showed a bit of solidarity a decade or so ago when it was other people's neighborhoods being ruined.  Our house was worth but a fraction of those 600K houses, but it was ours, and my parents bought and paid for it with their earnings.

And I must correct something you said.  The problem has been around a lot longer than a decade or so.  Go back to the '60's.  That's when it all started.  The Great Friggin' Society.  The infamous legacy of another Texan, but that one was a Democrat.

Back in 1978, I was a guest being driven by a friend's father, four of us heading to Canarsie, Brooklyn from Jersey.  They took a detour, just for me, to the old neighborhood, East New York.  The scenes I witnessed that day as we drove left my mouth agape, and were right out of the movies.  It was cold and overcast, with trash -- being hurried along by the wind -- strewn all about.  Every couple of blocks or so were 50 gallon drums, flames flickering, being used for warmth by a not very inviting number of shivering people.  Of course, busing from the early '70's (starting with Boston, IIRC).  But it all goes back longer than a decade or so, it goes back to that bastard, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

131 Slums exist because trashy people exist.  You can't lift someone out of poverty when their own innate flaws and weaknesses are what put them there.  You cannot fix broken people.  You can help decent human beings who have wandered into a bad circumstance and are unsure how to escape it.  You can strive to create opportunities.  You can counsel and encourage.  You can help those who are already helping themselves.  But you can't do anything for or about those individuals who are determined to destroy themselves and everything around them.  Taking the dregs of society and scattering them about does nothing to make them better human beings.  It only ensures that the problems they create are as widely distributed as they are.

The only way to clean up a slum is to incarcerate those individuals who make it a slum.  Instead of pouring money into welfare, pour it into policing.  Build more prisons.  When the bad apples commit crimes, lock them up.  Get them off the street.  Keep doing this and over time the living conditions within the area will improve as the dregs of that society are removed from the equation.  The citizens of that community should be encouraged to exercise their right to keep and bear arms.  An armed society is a safe and polite society.  Thugs and drug dealers will have a harder time intimidating people who have the power to shoot back, and the blood of dead criminals makes an excellent detergent, washing away fear and hopelessness.

The difference between a poor community and a slum is the quality of the residents.  Without people, all you have are empty buildings.  Slums aren't a matter of economics or even geography, but of sociology, psychology, and criminology.  Solving the problem requires that the proper tools be applied in the proper way.  Be the rock upon which the bad apples break themselves.
