Senatrix Hillary!, we are told, is holding fund-raisers in the reddest of red-state Bush county -- in Texas, of all places.
Well, the piece does get one thing right-- she was, in fact, in the state of Texas.
The writer apparently is unaware of, or chose to deliberately misrepresent his knowlege of, the fact that there are blue enclaves in every red state. We tend to refer to these, collequially, as "cities" or "wealthy, liberal-leaning suburbs."
So Hillary! is wowing them in counties in Texas that went 49% or even 56% for John Kerry in 2004.
Similarly, NYT musical critic/"politcal pundit" Frank Rich gushed that Brokeback Mountain would sweep the heartland, because it was doing so well in the super-red-state mid-America heartland town of Plano, Texas. Kausfiles checked into this (scan wayyyy down) and found that Plano wasn't quite as red as Frank Rich had suggested:

I'm annoyed at the dishonesty, of course. But I'm more peeved at the arrogance-- the idea that they can get away with peddling such transparent lies. How stupid do they think we are?
Very, very stupid, apparently.
Coming: Heartland, mid-west farm-country Illinois* rejects tough measures to limit illegal immigration, showing that America doesn't want such measures!
* Cook County, Illinois, to be exact. I think it's better known by another name, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.

Each time I go to the polls here Conservatives far outweigh Liberals. It's almost not even funny. Maybe it is the area of Plano I have chosen to live, I don't know, but the Wal-Mart is being built within 5 miles of my home so it's not a political issue.
On the larger issue of the Clinton fundraiser though, the Dallas area is huge. It's hard to explain how big the area is to people that have never been here so I won't try, but to assume because Clinton chose Dallas as one of her stops somehow demonstrates Texas is turning Blue is a bizarre way of thinking. Also another little seldom known fact. Dallas boasts the highest homosexual population second only to San Fran. The difference is that there are massive Conservative homosexual groups here.
Austin is just a different story. Dan Rather wouldn't live in a red area of a red state, would he? There's a joke about Austin, even though it is the capital of Texas. It's our blue-headed step-son. Every Texan knows Austin is a Liberal mecca. That's why Sheehan, Code Pink et al were able to get as many protestors at Bush's ranch, which is pretty close to Austin.

Travis County's infamy on the other hand is even well known to a Finger Lakes Region resident like myself. Quit a reputation they've got and no surprise Hillary could rake in the dough there.

This doesn't sound too much like Texas. But it does scream "liberal Democrat" "values" like crazy.

You all know how it is in high school. You have these groups you hang out with and then you have a closer nit group within those larger groups. This friend was just outside this closer group because he started smoking weed like it was tobacco. Most of us left to go to college and he was one that was left behind. He, apparently, did heroine once and that was when it killed him. And yes, it's very stupid. He was an idiot. Does a smart person smoke weed in a car by yourself in a library parking lot? Hell no, but he did.
The Wal-Mart not selling guns is a bit strange, but there has always been this confusion about Texas outside of the state. I'm sure Brandon, Otho and Jake can agree with me on the notion that we just aren't as hickish as most label us as. The Texas most people think of does exist, but it's not in the Dallas area and from what I have seen not in Austin or Houston either.
One thing the author of this article fails to mention is that citizens in Texas cities have money. This state was built on oil after all. There is a guy by the name of Bob Strauss who lives in Dallas and he used to be the DNC Chairman and ran a company by the name of Goldman Sachs. For all we know Strauss gave a donation of a million or two that ended up curbing up the average donation of $4,200. That's why I have a hard time not laughing at how the author came up with the conclusion it is shocking to see Hillary have a successful fundraising event in Texas.

I can definitely back up Chad on this claim. The outside perception of Texas is spot on when it comes to the rural areas of the state.
But you're way off the mark if you think cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin, or even San Antonio are hickish. DFW suburbs like Plano, Allen, McKinney, Highland Park, Grapevine (which has it's own wine festival every September), Keller, and Southlake are as upscale an area as you'll find anywhere in the U.S. In fact, Verizon used Keller as a test market for their new FIOS video service.
The fact that Wal-Mart is using Plano as a test market for this kind of store doesn't surprise me in the least. In fact, if it's successful, I expect one to pop up in my neck of the woods near Southlake.
