— DrewM To govern is to make choices and under the administration of Barack Obama, the choice is in favor of detained terrorists over the Americans those terrorists would like to kill.
Are the people who make this kind of decision the ones you making health care decisions for hundreds of millions of Americans?
Congressmen Mike Pence (R-IN) and Bart Stupack (D-MI) aren't amused.
"As long as Americans must wait to receive the vaccine, the detainees in Guantanamo Bay should not be given preferential treatment to receive the H1N1 vaccination," Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) wrote in a letter to Secretary of the Army John McHugh on Friday.Pence, too, shared Stupak's concerns, but he also used his interview Friday to take a shot at Democrats -- and their handling of other healthcare crises -- in particular.
"I think this is exactly the kind of misadministration of healthcare, this and other aspects of the way this government is responding to the H1N1 virus, that ought to give the American people great pause about this massive government-run insurance plan that's been unveiled this week by House Democrats," Pence said.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this get mention two or three thousand times in the upcoming debate in the House and Senate. It should make for a wonderful TV commercial as well.
Fortunately for the Gitmo detainees they are protected from doctors who can only look longingly at their tonsils and feet. If not for the armed guards you just know those greedy MDs would be hacking away at them for the money and the fun of it.

Isn't that the rep formerly of NY-23? Yeah, good luck with that, Stupak. McHugh is now wrapped around Obama's finger, just like the rest of Obama's cabinet members.

Isn't it time to dig up the newspaper archives in which Democrats blasted the Bush admin for failing to properly administer the annual flu shots to people?
Every single year, like clockwork, the Democrats criticized Bush about the flu shots. Obama has no excuse; the Swine flu didn't just appear on the radar screen last week. The Swine Flu has been around for several months!

As we discuss vaccine problems, let not anyone forget who screwed up the whole vaccine industry, and while trying to do what, exactly ...
From the WSJ (http://tinyurl.com/ybctgs3):
Hillary's Vaccine ShortageBy The Wall Street Journal August 15, 2003
Everyone knows America's vaccine industry is in serious trouble, with an ever dwindling number of producers and recent severe vaccine shortages. What everyone also should know is that the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine has now pinned much of the blame on Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Well, not in so many words. The panel of doctors and economists issuing a report on vaccines last week was too polite to mention the former First Lady by name. But they identify as a fundamental cause of the problem the fact that the government purchases 55% of the childhood vaccine market at forced discount prices. The result has been "declining financial incentives to develop and produce vaccines."
The root of this government role goes back to August 1993, when Congress passed Mrs. Clinton's Vaccines for Children program. A dream of Hillary's friends at the Children's Defense Fund, her vaccines plan was to use federal power to ensure universal immunization. So the government agreed to purchase a third of the national vaccine supply (the Clintons had pushed for 100%) at a forced discount of half price, then distribute it to doctors to deliver to the poor and the un- and under-insured.
The result is a cautionary tale for anyone who favors national health care. Already very high in 1993, childhood vaccination rates barely budged. A General Accounting Office report at the time noted that "vaccines are already free" for the truly needy through programs like Medicaid. Meanwhile, however, the Hillary project dealt the vaccine industry another financial body blow.
Thirty years ago, the Institute report notes, 25 companies produced vaccines for the U.S. market. Today only five remain, and a number of critical shots have only one producer. Recent years have brought shortages of numerous vaccines, including those for whooping cough, diphtheria and chicken pox.

the message from the Congressmen is too high-brow. I have a law degree & can read (sometimes) more mumbo jumbo than many others. but why don't these men just say it PLAIN:
"hey, the vaccines for your children, your elderly parents & your doctors & teachers are all going down to GITMO so the terrorists can get the shot. Because Obama doesn't want the terrorists to get sick."

Looks as if Obama is rewriting Alinsky's rules for the benefit of all his friends who consider Fascism the new American standard. Fuck The Wookie, Orca, and the jug-eared prick who occupies the people's house.

My OB is finally getting some, but the health dept. is only allotting him 40 doses at a time and demand is so high that the only fair way he's come up with to distribute it is for his pregnant patients to just keep their next appointments and if he has any vaccine at the time, he'll administer it. I don't go back for three weeks, so who knows if he'll even have any then.
And in the mean time, I can't get any for my kid. That those scumbags being held at GITMO have immediate access to it while I can't get any for myself or my young son, who are both in the "at risk" categories, is total horse shit.

They talked about this this morning on F&F and he rationale was that it was needed to protect the troops. So I gave it a semi-pass.
The problem is that the Dems ruined the inoculation industry and they cant make enough of the shit.

Assuming I even cared about the welfare of terrorists who were... you know I cannot even finish the sentence. I wish we'd actually inject them with H1N1. Still, those are some of the most protected and pampered individuals on the planet. Not luxurious, but pampered, especially given their histories. How many people are they running in to that will pass on this over-hyped flu? Kids in school are infinitely more vulnerable and have higher odds of dying. Yet the wisdom of our "leaders" decides that that's how we'll mete out care.
You said it, DrewM.
Yet again we see evidence of the ugly side of health care control rearing its head. We've said it before and we need to keep saying it again - Obamacare has nothing to do with heath and everything to do with control.

Bush got crucified later in 2004. He was 'warned' by "experts" in 2001 of the lack of manufacturing capability. Apparently it wasn't a problem when the Clintons were in office. At that time we were down to two manufacturers and one went of out of business (Chiron in England). All of the four current flu vaccine manufacturers are foreign and only one operates a plant in Maryland. How is that for vulnerability?

Someone posted Lurch's comments about that from a couple elections ago. You are dead on - Lurch was going nuts about how people were dying and Bush was incompetent, blah blah.
Meanwhile, our children die for want of a flu shot - a shot we've been demanding for about ten months.

Anyhow, it's all Obama can do now to bring up Gitmo occasionally without doing anything meaningful to close it. He's had top men working on Gitmo policy for months and they haven't cracked the case. Luckily the trend, politically speaking, is not Obama's friend. He will only cock up the war more and more and closing Gitmo will be more unpopular as a result. That is, until we miss one of the ever-increasing number of terrorism plots being busted on our soil. Before then he'll limp along and officially creep out ~20,000 US citizens every day. He'll either totally freeze in the headlights or nuke Pakistan, give 90% of Americans the shivering existential douchechills and it's a new ballgame after that.
Posted by: tachyonshuggy at October 31, 2009 12:13 PM (YRjsF)
Meh.
First of all, if the detainees are going to get it will be from the guards or outsiders who show up (people the guards will be in contact with any way).
Second, I bet most otherwise healthy servicemen and women would gladly take the relatively small risk of catching the flu (which isn't a big deal for the overwhelming majority of adults) so that people in the high risk groups (kids and pregnant women) can have a shot. They take far greater risks every day.

It is going to highlight the complete failure of the federal government to ensure that there is enough vaccine. Given the health care debate and the 1900 page bill, this cuts though all the confusing BS and shows just how government health care is going to be run.

All the more reason to shift the resources to the most aerosol-, saliva-, and phlegm- exchanging individuals around: school kids -- who, BTW, happen to be much more vulnerable to the virus and who haven't actually plotted against the nation to destroy it. As far as we know, the little dickens.
I added that last part as a Coulter-ish jab. Funny but with a realistic bite. I know you're not advocating for terrorists, just stating fact. Nonetheless, this is one of those cases where the counterfact must be emphasized.
Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at October 31, 2009 02:50 PM (C3uAX)
Generally speaking its a good idea to inoculate prisoners and clusters of close-living people before the general public
That probably is true, however we're no where near having enough vaccine to start jabbing the general public. Heck, I'm a health care provider - who has asthma - which theoretically puts me in 2 high risk groups, and our facility doesn't have enough doses (or know when we're getting them) to vaccinate us yet.
I realize it's just a couple of hundred doses we're talking about at GITMO but we should prioritize giving the vaccine to actual US citizens first.
And I shouldn't even have to say - If this happened and Bush was still in charge we'd see bold headlines and stories leading the evening news....
Posted by: some wench at October 31, 2009 03:03 PM (uJBct)
Prison inmates get dibs on vaccinations during epidemics because:
1) they live in an enclosed and crowed environment where diseases can easily spread. They may be essentially in quarantine, but the guards are not and one sick guard could cause an entire prison to get infected.
and
2) their health is the responsibility of the government and if any of them get sick and/or die lawsuits are guaranteed.
But just because we have to vaccinate these bastards doesn't mean we can't have some fun. We should take the prisoner out of his cell in the middle of the night without warning or explanation, take him to an empty room, strap him down to a table, have some doctor that looks like that guy from "Cannonball Run" administer the vaccination, and have him silently stare at the prisoner for an hour while writing things down on a notebook. Just imagine the size of the bricks he'll be shitting.

In order to contract "Swine Flu" (or any air-borne virus, for that matter) one must be in contact with others, including defense lawyers. Were it not for the Obama administration's relaxation of Bush restrictions, the Gitmo prisoners would be safe from H1NI.

The real reason to not support public health insurance is that both parties will seek to earn votes by subsidizing it, which adds to the longer term fiscal liabilities we have. The Democrats made Medicare and Medicaid, and Bush and the Republicans added hundreds of billions of dollars to Medicare spending by creating the new prescription drug benefit (Medicare Plan D). It doesn't matter who you vote for: government will spend more on healthcare.
This episode, however, has absolutely nothing to do with public health insurance.
