Pretty Damn Good Amateur Film
— Ace

It's by the guys who did the awful Battle of Shakur Heights on the second season of Project Greenlight (I knew it was them the moment I saw a very effective car-run-down special effect, a gag they'd used to get the job on Greenlight).

Well, I guess that makes them semi-pro. Still, they're doing this on their own dime. It's pretty amazing what halfway competent guys can do with budget special effects programs.

They're Sam Raimi influenced comic/horror type guys, and just were all wrong for the Indie quirky drama/afterschool special Shakur Heights. This is definitely more their metier. Not especially innovative, just a mash-up of elements from Evil Dead 2 and the very underrated House 2: The Second Story (plus, I guess, a bit of low-rent The Beyond.)

There are three episodes posted so far out of four total. Each runs about 3:40.

Thanks to Asher, who I'm guessing enjoyed the Evil Dead homage.

House 2: Wow, YouTube has everything:

1 Ace: What range of $$$ do you consider a film to be low budget? I ask because I've been watching these British crime films by Ritchee and Vaughn. I don't know how much L,S, & B cost, but Snatch and Layer Cake were both under 4 million pounds. Granted, it's been a few years since they were made (2000? 2004?) and it's hard to figure out how much they grossed and how much profit they really need to earn. I would think making films under $10 mil could be quite lucrative. So, why aren't more made?

Posted by: Red at March 31, 2007 09:04 AM (wnEdx)

2 Uh, did you give the title of the film?

I couldnt get the embedded video to play here. I did watch it at atom films though. The pilot wasnt that funny, but it actually looks kinda interesting.

I never saw House 2, but i did read a comic book adaptation that i found in the basement of a house i was renting in the early 90s. I cant remember shit about it. Something about a guys Grandfather coming back from the dead maybe?

Im sure some of you have already seen this clip from Shark Attack 3, but if you havent you are missing out on one of the best movie lines ever.

5 House 2 was a horror-comedy in which the house in question opened up various gates into other time periods and dimensions.

There's a funny part where John "Cliffie" Ratzenberger shows up as an electrition to fix a short, and the guys are all worried about keeping him from discovering the house's weird secrets.

He calls them into a room where he's working on the electric lines, and shows them he's punched through a wall that looks out onto, say, an Aztec temple in the jungle around 1200 AD. Very calmly he says, "See, your problem isn't electrical so much as you've got some sort of transdimensional gateway thing going on."

And then he becomes an Indiana Jones sort of guy, if Indiana Jones had been an electrician.

It's one of the few films that failed "movie star" Bill Maher was in (he really thinks he should be a star; comedy is a backup), and he's okay in it, since he plays a smug prick. Really stretching those acting muscles.

It's not great, but it's got a few good ideas, and it's kinda fun.

Anyway, Hellholes seems to swipe that premise, where cupboards and refrigerators open up to reveal strange otherworlds.

6 I added a clip from House 2. Again, not great. Just surprisingly decent, especially for a sequel to a cheapie horror movie that wasn't very good in the first place.

Posted by: ace at March 31, 2007 10:44 AM (+u1X0)

7 Bill Maher was in (he really thinks he should be a star;

and he should be - as anybody that has seen him in "Piranha Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death" can attest. Between that and 'DC Cab' the man should get an honorary Oscar. Hell give him two for that tour de force 'Pizza Guy' or 'Pizza Man' or whatever that movie was he was in.

Im ashamed to admit that ive seen all of these movies multiple times. Damn did Comedy Central used to suck or what? The only thing that they had to break up this cavalcade of shit movies was constant reruns of Benny Hill and Stand Up - Stand Up.

Oh and the Japanese have invented a Tuxedo that smells like bacon. It doesnt seem very practical. Maybe we can use it in Iraq.

8 House 2? Whatever happened to House 1? Wendt rocked in that one too.

"Strange old bat lived in that house, craziest b*tch under the face of the sun"

"She was my aunt."

"Oh! heart of gold, though, heart of gold."

Battle of Shakur Heights...

"Shakur Heights"?

I think you meant "Shaker Heights"

Tupak was nothing but a fakin' ass nigger that would have 'died anonymously young' twenty years ago at the hands of the "Short North Posse" or the "Ghetto Boys" if he had ever lived in Columbus...

His mama was a "socialist" black radical, and he was nothing more than a little punk.

Tupak-- Good riddance!

13 Amish of the many names--

I thought I was the only person who saw "PW and the Avocado Jungle of Death"

I don't know how to react... This movie was definitely among the "five dumbest" of all time-- but it did also have Shannon Tweed's 50 yr old titties---

(I was 15 in 1979--- Shannon Tweed was the "hot", "MILFy", "tit show" bitch in every B- movie showed on Skinemax during my "puberty"...)

Of course, Mahre was probably just chasing some cheap black cocksucking 19 yr old 'ho' on the street corner at the time.

14 I'm on a Jason Statham kick. I wanted to get Crank but couldn't find it. So, I was all set to buy the two Transporter movies. I was reluctant since recently I saw it at the cheap dvd store for half price. I looked at it several times, but hadn't heard of him before. No one likes to pay full price for what they could have paid half price for. Anyway, the guy at the counter told me if couldn't find Crank because it's in the new section. So, now I have three dvds for tonight. I could have put them on my Netflix queue and saved myself a whole lot of money.

Anybody seen these movies? People either love or hate Crank.

Red, I have both of the Transporter flicks - 1st one was pretty darn good IMO (for a semi-mindless action flick), but it's been a while since I've seen them. IIRC, I was disappointed in the 2nd, but a second viewing may be in order... maybe that's what I'll watch tonight? I was just trying to convince myself not to watch Kill Bill 1 & 2 again, anyway.

This is good, no doubt about it. Is it Evil Dead Good? No.

But I'm a Sam Raimi guy all the way. The Evil Dead Trilogy is infallible. There is not a single wrong thing about it. Even the naked girls being led around in chains by skeletons in Army of Darkness rules. Ash rules. Nothing can touch the immortal greatness that is that trilogy. Even comparing other movies to them is an insult. Other great horror movies abound. Other great comedic horror movies exist (Shaun of the Dead). But nothing comes close to the perfect greatness that Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell achieved. Those movies can not, and never will be, topped. Do not use them to describe something else or any other movie. It is a disservice. When you're discussing great martial arts movies, you don't mention Enter The Dragon, because to do so would be a disservice to the greatness that is Teh Bruce. Some movies transcend; they exist on a higher plane, and you have to just appreciate what they are.

You didn't like the original House Ace? It's one of my all time favorites. Granted, it never delivers the knockout punch or makes that leap from good to great, but it's a genuinely scary movie with a few good laughs. The Vietnam Vet stuff does come close to being great.

2)If Ace doesn't like anything in my post, he can 'delete' at will(and advise me of such- and/or block me-etc.).
3)And... you are not Ace.

So, tell me again why I should care what you think?

One of the things I think is absolutely fucking AWESOME about Penn and Teller's Bullsh!t series, and Southpark, is that, they really are in general supporters of the lefty philosophy.

However, they oppose the desire of certain lefties to make it a mandatory agenda, it's the most true form of "civics" in the entertainment media.

I don't know about Penn & Teller, but for Parker and Stone I'd say at least one of them has to be a legitimate 3rd party type, if not libertarian-conservative leaning.

I can similarly be certain they aren't both right leaning either.

Frankly,

Actually, even when I was wrong, I rarely got fucked with, cuz I was wrong in a way that people would agree with. (part of the reason I'm crazy)

I basicaly think that people should be left alone until they fuck up, and then they should be told that they fucked up and then be punished.

I don't know whats right and wrong, I know what I've learned is right and wrong, but the degree of governance over the right and wrong things that are done should be limited. I didn't really have to be told not to stab someone, or to rape someone or to run over the crippled kid who gets to the crossing guard too late. That shit is natural if you have a proper upbringing, hell, even if you have a shitty one, with failed parents who try, but always fail, despite the fact that they love you.

I have a lot of friends who fall into the category's of failed humans that "true" conservatives pander to.

Thats why I have the opinion that I do. Abortion? Yeah, it's a shitty shitty fucking thing, but doesn't she and he have a responsibility to learn that for themselves?

Shit like that.

I don't know whats right and wrong, I know what I've learned... Sounds to me like you know exactly what is right and wrong. Now, the question is whether that is actually "learned" that as you first stated... I noticed you mention that it's natural "if you have a proper upbringing... or a shitty one." I would posit that it's ingrained in any non-evil person from birth. An instinct, if you will (the basis of humanity?).

Abortion - This isn't the time or place to get into a theological deiscussion, I suppose, but I think even the most liberal of the nutroots know what is right or wrong, but have a hard time dealing with the reality of life, hence the justifications and rationalizations of their immoral actions. Me? - wrong as anything on earth, but not the govt's place, blah, blah, blah.

Either it is murder or it isn't. If it isn't, why is it so shitty? Who cares? Abort your heart out.

I think there are degree's, I know it's seemingly hypocrytical, however, until "the breath of life" I can forgive a retarded person who is frightened. Just like I can forgive a retarded conscript in the iranian army for shooting, because they are frightenend.

Non-sequitor, I know. But, I think the goal is to help the young people who seek abortion, and to help them even if they accept it.

They fucked up, and for the most part there is no reason to punish them (unless they are lefty indoctrinated retards who see children as a cash cow) because they will likely punish themselves.

I remember in '98, or '99 there was a woman and in fact family, in southern california who promised to adopt the child of any homeless woman seeking a state funded abortion (yes, the left lies, there are a LOT of state funded abortions in the nation) she will be given a temporary home while carrying the child, she would be given access to educational assistance (not offered by the particular woman or family) and the child would be given a home, and, depending the "mother"/baby factory, might be allowed to visit the child.

All she had to do, was take the norplant (is that what it's called?" the chopstick embedded with hormones so that women don't get pregnant for 4 years) and she will also recieve some sort of stipend.

LAWSUIT!!!!!!

LAWSUIT!!!!!!

LAWSUIT!!!!!!

The mother/family retracted the offer to the woman, and said she can raise it herself.

LAWSUIT!!!! retracted

I understand and I empathize entropy, but sometimes, sometimes, it's not as wrong as murder. It's just wrong.

The pooter is the pooty, the cooter, the cooty, the missy, the meat curtains, the panty bacon, the "fly swatter" (I don't know why thats a nickname, but had a friend who called it that) the slit the gash the cooze.

The pooter is not the "chocolate star" the "throbbing apple," (I know what that means and it's disturbing that I knew someone who would say it with affection) the Hershey Starfish (I thought that was kinda witty)

Now, I agree with you.

Take it or don't. In fact, I had a girlfriend (the first one I didn't excercise the "rythm" system with) and she slapped me. Why? Oh, she was protected, but she was reacting based on ingrem? is that it? ingrem? an ingrained reaction, thats called and ingrem right?

Anyways, I was like "whats that for" "sorry, I'm not used to that" "well you to. . . ." "I know shut up, now clean yourself, we have to be to work tomorrow" or some shit like that.

Now thats a woman I can love, in fact did.

It's classical liberal not classical democrat. The democrat party was actually _never_ the liberal party, at least not since they stopped being the Democratic Republican party (aka the Republican party, aka Jeffersonians). And that was quite a bit before Lincoln's Republican party existed back then the Whigs were still in vogue.

The republicans were the small l liberals in 1840, and they are the small l liberals (or the closest you will get to them) today as well. And all the time in between.

They fucked up, and for the most part there is no reason to punish them (unless they are lefty indoctrinated retards who see children as a cash cow) because they will likely punish themselves

Um...but if you think abortion is murder, yes there is. They killed somebody for chrissakes.

And you don't let them go around murdering people in order to learn a lesson. Or help them figgure out it's wrong through councilling.

If someone murders your brother, you're going to want them jailed (at the least) or even friggin executed.

To allow abortion of any sort - UNLESS you are the sort who would also allow infanticide and even murder, there are some goof balls - then it can only be because you do not think abortion is murder, and you do not think a fetus is a person.

If so...someone who has an abortion, how have they 'fucked up'?

I know you don't beleive in abstinence until marriage. And if a fetus isn't a person, who cares? Abort em all and god will know his own. There's no problem here. It's not even a bad thing. It's a nifty convienence. Better to abort in many circumstances even.

Why is it bad at all, if it is not murder? Who cares?

I think...and this is just me...but I think most people - even pro-choice people - tend to see abortion as being "bad" because on some subconcious level they know damn well it is murder. There is a natural revulsion to it because of what it really is. But conciously they decide it's something less then that.

I'm pro-choice myself....under 6 weeks. Which, you know...6 weeks...basically I'm pro-morning after pill but that's about it.

And if you take the morning after pill, I don't think you "fucked up". Or should be "helped". I don't care. You go girl.

Posted by: Frankly at March 31, 2007 08:19 PM (Q8tsb)

105

The wording of your your post makes me think that is not an arbitrary number for you.

It's not.

Where does 'six weeks' come from?

Well, (for a start) that is when it becomes a fetus. Before that it is a "zygote" or an "embryo". If you didn't know, embryo is actually Latin, it literally means something like "precursor". Fetus is also latin, and it it literally means "offspring", child, baby.

At 6 weeks (roughly) when it becomes a fetus, it has all the parts. Not all fully developed and working, granted (some won't start working or be fully developed for a decade...maybe two and half) but they're all there.

At 12 weeks, the brain patterns in the fetus (as well as the behavior in the womb, sucking the thumb, ect) are virtually identical to a newborn. And this, the brainscan, is what makes it a "person". I don't fret over "pulling the plug" on people who had their brainstems blown off because they are dead. But I (like most people) am against killing infants. My starting point is that infanticide is clearly morally wrong and I'm opposed to it. Now...an 8 month 20 day old 'fetus' is obviously not meaningful different then a 2 day old baby! Nothing terribly special happens when it pops out. So killing it at 8 months and 20 days is the same as throwing a 2 week old in a trashbin. It's murder. I then work backword, to when the fetus is no longer comparable to an infant.

I don't know and can't say exactly when life begins, but that doesn't mean I can't ballpark it any better then 9 months! I say it's somewhere around 6-12 weeks on average.

Does that mean you don't believe that life begins at conception?

Life does....yes. "Personhood" does not, no. It's not possible. It has no damn brain. It has no nervous system at conception. It's too small and too simple. It's just a clump of cells.

Again, I'm not opposed to 'pulling the plug' on braindead people.

Is it alive? Oh yes. Simple biology. IT IS. Is it a unique being? Oh yes. It is NOT an appendage. This is 5th grade biology. Is it human? Well it sure as fuck isn't a hamster.

But so is a brain dead vegetable. It is alive and it is human and it is a unique being, not an appendage.

But is it a PERSON? A vegetable is not. It is technically alive...but I don't see it as murder to pull the plug on a totally brain dead person. Nor do most people. And I say, an embryo is not a person.

If so, seems al ittle contradictory to your argument.

Not, I think, once you here me make a distinction between "alive" and "a person".

I still can't help but think that if one is SO opposed to abortion, then one MUST(?) be opposed at any stage.

I don't understand why. Like I said, after 12 weeks for certain, I beleive you are actually commiting an act of infanticide. So I am SO opposed to that. In fact, I'd say premeditated murder for the doctor and accessory to murder/conspiracy to murder for the mother.

Before 6 weeks (before maybe, 5 weeks to allow for different rates of development) I do not beleive it is murder, any more then it is murder if one twin embryo absorbs another inside the womb. (they can actually do stuff like this at this stage..that's how characteristically not a baby they are). So why would I be against it? Not only do I not think it's murder, I don't even think it's a marginally bad thing to do. No more "wrong" then a game of ping-pong is wrong. Totally morally neutral.

What about 5 1/2 wks? 6 1/2?

Well, it is my understanding that it is not precisely 6 weeks because every fetus develops slightly differently. For one particular fetus, it might be classified as a "fetus" at only 5 1/2 weeks. So that is a hairy issue.

The way I feel about it is, as I said, 6-12 weeks is the area. So 6 weeks is at the very start of that window, it is the cautious side. So I can live with that, begrudgingly, because even with a quickly developing fetus he's not going to be 12 weeks developed at only 5 weeks 6 days. And it may or may not be murder at that stage. I'm not sure.

If you want to move it back another two weeks to create a safe buffer zone, I think that is a prudent idea. I'm very happy saying 4 weeks.

The problem, of course, is you don't even know you're pregnant at 4 weeks. Maybe not even 6 weeks. I can't help that...I didn't come up with this time with the goal of making it too early to act on. I'm just looking at the biology.

So basically again, I'm for the morning after pill but not much more.

As far as the 'potential human' and all that...meh. It's not a baby. The fact that it will become a baby is fine and dandy, it's still not a baby yet. A sperm cell is a potential baby too....and some people might argue masturbation is wrong because you're killing sperm.

I guess that kinda fits into it.

You might look at a zygote and say "That's a potential human".

But it's also potentially 2 humans. Or 4 humans. Or .5 humans. 1 zygote might end up producing 2 kids or 2 zygotes might end up producing 1.

It's not a kid. It's a percursor to a kid.

Finally!

I just rememered that song that I was confusing Skid Row with.

This song was played eighty-kajillion times in 1992.

They look like Skid Row -- skinny, long hair, etc.

The main difference is that Mr. Big was comprised of damn good musicians. Billy Sheehan played with David Lee Roth and in Talas. Paul Gilbert was in Racer X and is generally regarded as one of the best alternate pickers in rock. He is touring this year with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (who actually played with Billy Sheehan with DLR) on G3.

Ignore that song (To Be With You). Check out "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind" instead. Badass.

And...

Nobody really knows where Matt Stone sits. Trey Parker comes off as a Libertarian to me. They told stories in a recent Rolling Stone feature about going to Hollywood parties and telling the other guests that George W. Bush is "a great man." In truth, though, Stone and Parker are anti-whatever it is popular to be. And they did say something to the effect that it takes more balls to be conservative in Hollywood these days.

Anybody that is a JC fan should see that last video.

Might be yeah, I hadn't considered the date. That would fit John's sense of humor for certain. Protein Wisdom being down a couple days made me wonder though.
