— Gabriel Malor The price of a stamp will go up 2 cents in May. The Postmaster General has proposed reducing postal delivery to five days a week. And he gets compensated (if the Washington Times is correct) $800,000 in pay, benefits, and perks.
The changes, approved by the Postal Board of Governors and contained in a little-noticed regulatory filing in December, brought Mr. Potter's total compensation and retirement benefits to more than $800,000 in 2008. That is more than double the salary for President Obama. The new compensation package, much of it deferred to later years, goes beyond a newly beefed-up salary, now $263,575, that Congress arranged for him as part of a 2006 law to make top postal salaries more competitive with those in the private sector. At least four other postal officials got more than a quarter-million dollars in total compensation in 2008, according to Postal Service records reviewed by The Washington Times.
This misses the point. There are no comparable postal salaries in the private sector because it is illegal in this country for private companies to infringe on the postal service's monopoly. The post office, bless their hearts, tries so hard but suffers from having to please someone other than the customer and shareholder. That is, having to please Congress.

Or alternatively, we could just disband the whole fucking thing and let the private sector do it.

We are officially serfs living in a socialist monarchy.
Life sucks, then you flee to Canada, even though you'd never, ever thought you would entertain a crazy idea like that.
O' Canada - where I can escape the socialist revolution birth pangs since you've already fallen, O' Canada!

I bet one of those perks is getting a fucking sweet little white jeep to cruise his ass around. How awesome would that be? Going through peoples personal shit? How much is that worth? A lot. That's how much. Old school porn mags there for the taking. Who's gonna call the Post Office and ask where their latest edition of Sun Tanned Tits, or Prison Skank is? Not me. "Working" the front counter would be fun. Doing that slow motion walk, acting like you're pushing buttons that actually do something on that old Commodore 64 "remote data entry station", telling the customer you'll be right back before retiring to the back for a few Zs - all perks. All. Hard to put a price on that shit.

Newman: Work? It's raining!
George: So?
Newman: I called in sick. I don't work in the rain!
George: You don't work in the rain? You're a mailman! "Neither rain nor sleet nor..." It's the first one!
Newman: I was never that big on creeds.

For all of you civilians commenting at this site, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive drinking of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

It's a little known fact, jakeman, that the extra pay and extra fat help keeps the bureaucrat warm during winter, especially during recessions.

I thought that any business receiving taxpayer funds was to force all pwople in said firm to work for less than 500,000.
I know, I know unless you work for the government then all bets on sky high salary and perk packages are okey-dokey. BTW, how much did the private jets of Obama cost us for the little jaunt to chicago denver phoeinix cost the taxpayer that is paying the way?

Has the Washington Times so little credibility that they merit such caveats? Yes, they're owned by a kook, but the paper itself seems pretty credible.

JF Not K, good luck. I hope this thread runs all night so you can get a good look at how little people know about postal operations, or give a shit. The rural guys used to have a little joke: It doesn't matter if the customer just got his taxes audited, or his disability turned down, or his draft notice--you're the only federal agent he's going to see this week, so you're the Government to him.
Everybody, when you've shot your wad and the spooge is dry, come back and let a couple of veterans put you some information about the largest single venture on the planet.
And hey, my mailman is so slow...

@20 The USPS does not receive "taxpayer funds".
especially with my foot problems (don't get me started about government worker's comp).
hmmm.... not taxpayer funded, yet it's a government job... I'm gonna need a little help with that.

@23 The CEO of Federal Express had a fiscal year 2009 base salary of $1.48 million, not including bonuses, benefits and perks. It sounds like the Postmaster General may be slightly underpaid compared to his peers.
Does Fed-x lose $2B a year? If it did, that CEO would be drawing a base salary of whatever unemployment pays.

But don't feel too bad. We in the private sector know it's nice to have a place for workers to go that otherwise couldn't hack it in the real world. We know who the real servants are and it sure ain't the public ones.

If you people using the four letter words and the childish crap really have an interest in" how stuff works" remember the name Regan and Bush! These were people headed in the direction of privatizing the Postal Service took the PO off budget in hopes of killing it? However, the PO managed to survive and has paid for it self ever since (try this with NASA). That did not work so they GU then required the PO had to pay 10 years ahead for its retired employees medical funds, 10 YEARS. Who else does this---U GOT IT--NO ONE__NO ONE--. Yet until the rest of this mindless mismanagement of the rest of our goverment Sh-- hit the fan the PO still survived. *****The finicial industry just SUCKED----SUCKED Americans DRY and no one responsible for looking after us to avoid that is either fired or jailed and you people are crying about the Post Office.
When the hell are You People Going To Wake UP.
Why are you paying for AIG, Leiman Brothers, B of A to purchase another bank, mortage lenders who gave adjustable rates to people of whom 65% qualified for regular loans.
1. LOOK AT C-SPAN
2. THINK PEOPLE****OUR FINICIAL INDUSTRY DID NOT JUST COLLASPE***PEOPLE WERE DOING WRONG*** AND THEY WILL BARLEY SKIP A BEAT***WHILE YOU CAN NOT BORROW A DIME THE CREDIT CARD COMPANY WILL USE YOUR MONEY FOR FIVE % AND CHARGE YOU 9%-29% TO USE IT ON YOU CREDIT CARD.
ANY YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE DAM POSTMASTER GENERAL

dude. I'd rather read the four letter words than your all caps screaming. Also, using dashes in place of the last to letters in shit does not mean you didn't just say shit.

Mine have been thieves. I have learned that if I don't insure a package (and get that stamp on it), consider it stolen. Guaranteed.

Good. Now I won't have to haul myself out to the mail box on Saturday to see if another set of bills came in.
@29 "Does Fed-x lose $2B a year? If it did, that CEO would be drawing a base salary of whatever unemployment pays."
Let's hope. But based on how bank execs are paid to run shit into the ground I'm starting to wonder. Not to mention most auto industry execs. Then they come hat in hand to the government to get us (taxpayers) to pay for their incompetence (largely encouraged/abetted by the government, of course) and expect to continue to get a 7 digit annual salary as a reward for outright failure. Then we have folks complain that if those bailed out walking-dead banks can't pay absurdly high dollars then they'll be forced to make due with "lesser minds." Yeah, right. Heaven knows there's no bright guys out there willing to do the work for a measly half mill a year. People who can run banks are just so damn rare. I think a little fresh blood would do more good than harm when the odds of successfully reviving these screwed up banks is already close to zero.
Anyway, as annoying as that huge pay number is, I'm thinking that our over paid postmaster is the least of our problems.
My only real complaint against the post office (unless they've been intentionally losing my mail) is that they are protected from competition. That's why the bozos in management are able to get away with "managing" it into the ground. I've known postal workers who were fully aware of how good they had it and worked to do a good job, but were still driven to distraction by the number of counter productive and outright stupid things that their managers forced down on them. If the PO was forced to become genuinely efficient or die out, then they'd have to get serious.

HatlessHessian,
If you knew how to read, I did say that I had left the Post Office. Also, if you think carrying mail is easy, I challenge you to spend 6 hours a day in subzero weather while carrying mail, avoiding falling on your ass on the ice and snow, and not getting frostbite, in Minneapolis. I did that for 10 f'ing winters. My ankle is permanently damaged. The so-called "real world" has been somewhat of a refuge for me, although I do miss carrying the mail in the summer. Maybe you live in a nice warm climate and have lazy mailmen, but be careful about painting groups of people with such a broad brush. With the POS management the Post Office has had for years, the letter carriers are the only thing that has kept it from sinking.

Hell I'll do it for free, just for the yucks. Oh wait, it's already been done.
