Ports: Saudi Arabia Runs Brooklyn Ports

And a lot of other US ports, too. The picture there features a Saudi ship cruising out of the docks, with the WTC hauntingly in background.

Jim Gerghty notes there is an awful lot of foreign management of US ports, too. He says Democrats' stand against the UAE deal is due to protectionism or xenophobia or both.

I have to say, though, that I'm not certain xenophobia is an irrational response to all this.

4 Maybe a stupid question, but why is it assumed that only one company can run all these ports? Why not break them up into smaller units so they can be managed by smaller companies?

7 Well, it's too bad. Even though it's a repeat, it's an excellent guest. And even though Ace starts out by saying he only had a couple of hours sleep, he sounds pretty perky and smooth with his delivery. Hopefully, it's one of the shows where he drops the f-bomb. I always seem to miss those.

8 The Democrats have effectively blind-sighted the Republicans on this issue. The management of a US port meted out to a foreign company/gov't is a normal, every day, free market process that has been going on forever.

They've taken this issue, spun it around, and run with it all the way to the end zone. Score one for the left.

One man's xenophobia is another man's survival skill - my fear is that in attempting desperately to avoid even the slightest hint of possibly sounding "racist", we've rationalized ourselves into a state of utter helplessness by clamping on the blinders when it comes to border security.

Our modern day "intelligentsia" can just about handle the idea of us using barbaric imperialistic tactics to fight terrorism as long as it's "somewhere over there", but when you start talking about applying that same tough approach to potential neighbors, many prefer to stick their head in the sand.

I say whatever it takes to get serious about border security - if raw xenophobia is the only thing that will do it, then so be it. I consider it to be using blind fear to overcome blind stupidity.

15 So, to the donks, it goes like this. We can't have these brown people doing what amounts to traffic control for boats. However, these other brown people can come in another border-illegally-and weed my garden. And Republicans get branded racists? As far as splitting this up, we need uniformity. 16 I say we use this as an opprotunity to get real immigration reform....You don't like foriegners working here,,,,fine. Lets clean house. And no, lets not start with gardeners. Lets start with the student visa/spy/terrorists. The higher educated seem to pose more of a threat than day laborers. What economic impact this would have???? It might stop the argument that South Americans are the only ones who will take "these jobs". I could be talking out my ass here.

17 Xenophobophobia seems to be widespread these days; the more fearsome the xenoi become, the more fearful the xenophobophobes become--of the xenophobes. Xenophobophobes who think all fearful people should be able to justify their fears should, by their own lights, consider carefully whether they are justified in fearing--and despising--xenophobes as a class.

As for me, I will be both as xenophobic and xenophobophobophobic as I please, and without justification, because I think recent events speak for themselves, and because I despise all thoughtless assumptions of the value of moral reciprocity.

18 Well, it took them long enough, but the Democrats are finally agreeing that ethnic and racial profiling is an excellent idea. Why else would they object to ports run by Arabs not proven to be terrorists but not ports run by Danes or Englishmen?

Mind you, I'm not objecting to the xenophobia, which is entirely justified in this case. I'm just disgusted by the Democrats tendency to do or say anything at all in order to score political points.
