Today I have a new found respect for Zogby, even though it may be gone by next week.
But that's just the kind of blinkard philistine situational ethics I've come to expect from myself.

That's the better news. Zogby is unreliable, yes. But what makes it unreliable is the fact that it usually shows the left doing better than it is. For example, see Zogby's predictions on election night 04.

One thing that bugs me about these polls that show Obama ahead is that they've had their convention, we have not. They have had a full week of
radio/paper/television coverage (free advertising) by the people who love to give them tongue baths, we have no. That's why the donks are so happy about these hurricanes -- that and the fact that they love humanity but hate people.

hey, she has dealt with a small town city council - that alone could be preparation for staring down Vladimir Putin, right?
Actually, yes. As someone who directs operational risk management for a global financial corporation, yet lives in BFE (Bum Fsck Egypt in case you're not familiar with the term), I've learned long ago that people like Sarah Palin are the first on my list for recognizing risks when they're developing.
It may be a shock to the affluent upper classers here, but you guys just don't read risk right. Growing up, upper classers were too detached from the consequence to develop a strong capacity to read and predict risk. Crash daddy's BMW? You'll get yelled at, yet the family survives and another BMW reappears shortly. Likewise, the bottom classes aren't of much utility in assessing risk. No matter what they do - right decision or wrong - they get screwed. You just can't develop good predictive models in environments where cause and effect are detached like the top and bottom classes.
Sarah clearly came from the middle, where taking the right risks resulted in return. She struck me as a risk manager from the very beginning, when she said "A boat in harbor is safe, but that's not what it was built for." She recognizes risk optimization (e.g. what ISO 31000 attempts to teach executives). She's a natural. Her husband too comprehends risk optimization, which is exceptionally evident in his four-time victory in the 2000 mile snowmachine race he's competed in.
The point is this: America has become too complacant and has too many parasites (Biden, Obama, etc.) tearing it down. We've become risk averse, yet this behavior actually magnifies the real risk we encounter (hence 9/11, Putin's assault on Georgia and other barbarians at the gate). If you want to see America continue, you need generals from the middle like Sarah, not the sitzpinklers and poseurs from the top and bottom like McCain and Obama.
I'm voting for Palin this election, not McCain. Her natural expertise as a risk manager is beyond what I hope to instill in our executive management.

Also, it's a real tragedy that Margaret Thatcher is unable to comment on this, because of her illness - that woman knew something about being a barracuda, and a target for vicious attacks from the left wing. She could have offered some great advice, I hope Sarah reads her memoirs.

My mother-in-law (retired, lifelong Democrat, married to a Teamster) called me after the Palin announcement. and told me she was surprised and pleased at the pick. As someone in my life who's one of the most pragmatic at reading people (yet has a high school education and is as blue collar woman as they come), she saw Palin as the first "real people" in recent memory to be running.
She's never liked McCain. Just not sincere. Obama? "What is he hiding? It's clear he's never worked a hard day in his life." Biden? We ended talking about snakes in the grass after discussing the Deleware Senator who's had excessive experience contemplating grand thoughts and never doing a damn thing.
The institution (on both sides) is going to react negatively to Palin. I know Romney (who I supported) already has gone into shock. Who would have ever figured John McCain had it in him to make such a wildcard pick that would shake the fat-cat system up to this extent?

Yeah, we get it, she was only Mayer for 20 months, but she did a lot of respectable stuff before that, and her actual story is impressive. People look to them to inform them about Palin, and it seems like more than a few GOP pundits are taking the opportunity to establish their "I'm not a partisan" bona fides by noting that Palin is a huge risk and totally inexperienced.
However, I'm probably just too partisan to be fair. I do have faith that Palin will prove herself as the public gets to meet her. She has to be on her toes, but she's smart and well spoken and I think she knows a lot about two of the most important issues, energy and fighting corruption.
It has been and always will be Obama's race to lose. Thankfully he's a loser.

I did something I had never done before - donate to the GOP - when Sarah's appointment to the VP slot in the ticket was announced. If the good people like most of those here on Ace that I read are going to keep our families protected from the risks that evolve from complacency, we've got to get out of our comfort zones, contribute funds and support people from the middle class in politics. We absolutely must stop deferring to others in this responsibility. Yea, it's a pain in the ass, but the cost of action is well less than the expected outcome from inaction.
With people like Sarah and others from the middle class, we might have a chance at addressing the phenomenal debt the fat cats have taken on from China and others before it's too late. Will you get out of your comfort zone and get engaged?

There's much deeper thought and analysis happening on blogs, written by "amateurs", than anywhere else in print media.

Did you see my post on your forum?
I saw you at HotAir talking about uploading other video from today.
Biden made another gaffe, the exact same one as at his convention speech. He AGAIN referred to sending 2 combat battalions to Afghanistan, when of course his prepared remarks said brigades, and Mr. alleged foreign policy experience should know better. Even if he did fail R.O.T.C. in college.
I think Biden making that same gaffe twice in three days could be embarrassing to him and helpful to the G.O.P. Any chance you have access to it? It's when he was speaking at Dublin.

Well, maybe Sarah Palin could have her people post a jpeg of a scan of the birth certificate at, oh, I don't know........AOSHQ.

Incidentally, in the spirit of things, I picked up Robert Green's "33 Strategies of War" (http://www.amazon.com/Strategies-War-Joost-Elffers-Books/dp/0143112783/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220157369&sr=1-3 ) this weekend for some entertaining reading. Definitely recommend listening to the Gladiator soundtrack while reading for some amusement (Hans Zimmer rules, though he tents to borrow quite liberally from Holst, Bruckner and Wagner). I'd have a hard time setting this to Rossini, but I guess my ear just wants to go extended tertian on me!
It's an exciting time for all of us. The uncertainty is great, and we have real risks knocking at the door. I don't know if the posters here know it, but their role in all of this is probably greater than they would ever guess. We are not anonymous and should never be led to feel that way, as much as some would want us to believe. We have real barbarians at the gate. China's role in purchasing a large portion of our debt must not be ignored, nor can what OPEC's price-taking behavior be right now. They have written us off as a nation that is incapable of strategic thought (as well as the deferring of self-gratication), from reading our elite sitzpinkler class of Al Gores, George Bush, etc. If we are to respond to the challenge, it won't be from this unchallenged, elite demographic, nor will it be from the perpetual chip-on-shoulder lower classes that Obama attempts to represent.
As my 14-year-old son advised me tonight, be thankful of this challenge being presented in your lifetime (per James in the new testamant). Each of us is being asked to make our difference.

Oh, actually, someone recently uploaded that video, after I began trying to find it. Here it is to save you some time, although maybe you have a better copy 'cause that one's a bit low quality.
Here's a story about Biden's first related gaffe at the convention and here's that video from YouTube if you want to put them both in to one or what have you.
I think you should write about it and get Ace to link to you, because if Fox News devoted that big story to 1 gaffe, then 2 identical gaffes 3 days apart is a big deal.
Remember that his convention night speaking notes had the CORRECT term: brigades. Ace, you should definitely post about this or link to William Amos' post when he writes it.

Is she genuine? In a word, yes. She's come from a working-class environment. She succeeded in various, disparate tasks along the way. She seems hands on and can balance family and business. She ran on reform and had success at it without wasting years of effort to do it. She seems straightforward, direct, and lacking in pretense. That's damn attractive.
Now consider the other candidates to see if they're genuine:
McCain - in some respects, yes; but in others, no. He's a calculating politician with years of training and molded by the bastard-child of "limited government" called legislation and crossing-the-aisle. He's less genuine than Palin by virtue of his tenure in office.
Biden - are you kidding me?
Obama - ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!111!?
Say what you will about electability but the common (wo)man picks up on this (genuineness) extraordinarily quickly which is why Kerry (in the last election) and Obama (in this one) have been viewed askance from middle, suburban America. Elitism is hard to conceal and it remains an unfalteringly unattractive blemish in a land presumably of opportunity.

Surely this novice, who has absolutely no experience in anything apart from shooting innocent mooses (meece?), and giving birth to tards cant be considered for the highest office of the land.

Obama is an empty suit. His inexperience will never come into play because he will be a figurehead from day one. The same people pulling his strings now will be pulling his strings then. I don't know if Obama has ever made a tough decision in his life but if he becomes President he will never have to make another one. Someone will tell him what to do, every time. So Obama's inexperience actually introduces no risk.
Palin on the other hand clearly thinks for herself. If she had to assume the office of President, she would get lots of advice from experienced Washington politicians and then do what she thinks is right anyway. She is used to deciding for herself. That's where her inexperience could hurt. Of course an experienced Washington pundit like Krauthammer would see this risk. He would not be doing his pundit job if he did not warn of it.
I think its a risk worth taking. John McCain is a pretty tough guy. He has shown a strong will to survive. I don't think he is going to die and leave Sarah Palin in charge before she is ready. In fact I don't think he's going to die for many years and and only after he serves 8 - 10 years as President of our 57 states.

A brigade can basically be the first level at which we're talking about a significant amount of military (that's just my opinion). We're at war these days, so a senator not knowing this shit is pretty unbelievable. Of course, Obama basically voted "present" on his VP choice, going with whatever.

Palin changes the game. She steals Barry's 'historical' thunder. She bolsters the 'reformer' image. She gives some of the PUMAs a raeson to vote for McCain over Barry. She throws the other side into spittle-flacked disarray, and, as I see it, strengthens the experience question regarding Barry rather than weakens it (They're calling HER inexperienced?). Suddenly, she's OUR 'rockstar' and Barry's Speech from Olympus is forgotten.
She also doesn't fracture the party as some other choices might have, and brings a lot of conservatives back to the fold.
She ain't been bad for fundraising and grassroots efforts, either.
Romney or Pawlenty might have been the 'safe' choices, nice competent officeholders who would do good jobs in office. But they wouldn't help move the election, and if you don't get elected, you don't do the job at all.
