The FannieMaeTM, patent pending
For a guy who said he didn't know much about economics, it sure sounded like he knew something back in 2006.
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Macknown as Government-sponsored entities or GSEsand the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEOs report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEOs report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
A rundown of attempted congressional reforms, via Flopping Aces, here.
McCain drops another shoe, you can see the ad here at HotAir. This time it's Jim Johnson.
I sincerely hope they're on their game with respect to timing and footwork. To those of us who follow this stuff like a monkey on a cupcake, it seemed to take forever for McCain to push the drilling issue. I think most of us said something along the lines of "finally, sweet Jeebus about time". I even recall ace suggesting he'd better get with the program before Obama figures this out and flanks him on ANWR. Fortunately Obama stayed true to his ownself.
Anyway, I think for the average Joe, it takes a little time for this stuff to sink in, just like it took $4/gal to really piss everybody off. 5 trillion gazillion dollars is one of those big incomprehensible expressions, until someone calls it "half the current national debt" (that's incomprehensible too, but now it's a really bad thing. See?)
Link via S. Weasel, who reminds us it's also International Talk Like a Pirate Day*. And she did the "FannieMaeTM" shop up yonder.
She's working herself to death for us.
* My favorites are the naughty sounding ones, like "Arrr, prepare to be boarded. Swab the deck and battendown the mizzenmast"! That sort of thing. But then I'm pretty easily entertained.

Oh, Stoatworth, don't think of it as something you have to do. Think of it as your next really, really big disappointment in life.
I'm all about managing the expectations.

McCain, is the story that gov cronyism corrupts (Obama wants more! ObamaCare, please!) or is it that there should be more gov (and more potential for cronyism)?
McC should be kicking Obama and down Wall Street with this issue. Instead he gives the general population liberal populist speech yesterday and hope that conservatives can be placated by Palin's anti-tax talk. Come on McC.

Careful though. You'll also crush Iraq. You must be prepared with an US-Iraq policy where the price per barrel of oil is $45-65.
Look at a map. The energy resources INSIDE the United States are located in areas where manufacturing has been decimated. Want good jobs? Want high paying jobs? Want to get the Unions back to neutral?
Get ready to fight the environmental lobby. They are the primary obstacle to increasing energy production in the United States to bring high paying skilled jobs BACK to our shores. With low cost energy developed here there will little incentive to continue to ship manufacturing jobs to nations with no environmental controls, no labor standards, and the shoddiest group of security checks the market has ever seen.
Fight this battle now before its too late to even try to put up the fight.

Gabriel, good stuff.
Nixon signed the bill creating the EPA in 1970. Look at crude production and imports since then:
US crude production 1859-2007
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/mcrfpus2a.htm
US crude imports 1910-2007
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/mcrimus2a.htm
Correlation doesn't equal causation, but there's no question environmental regulations and litigation have crippled crude oil production in the US.
Beyond oil, America needs to expand its electricity generation capacity by 30% in the next ten years. Renewables cost 4-6 times as much as coal/LNG fired or nuclear powerplants.
France gets 70% of its electricity (and 35% of its total energy) from nuclear power. Safety issues? Are you cocksuckers saying Americans are less competent than the French?
Affordable energy is the hammer McCain should be swinging. He needs to swallow his cap and trade bullshit and focus on ensuring America has the affordable (not "renewable" or "sustainable") energy it needs to remain the most productive nation on Earth.
