— Open Blog CNN (along with others) has the story.
(CNN) -- Paul Harvey, the legendary radio host whose career sharing "the rest of the story" with listeners spanned more than 70 years, has died, according to ABC Radio Networks. He was 90.
Harvey died at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where he kept a winter home, said Louis Adams, a spokesman for the networks. He was surrounded by family members when he died, Adams said.
Known for his deliberate delivery and pregnant pauses, Harvey's broadcasts were heard on more than 1,200 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces networks and his commentaries appeared in 300 newspapers, according to his Web site.
He had been hosting his radio shows part-time for much of the past year, after recovering from physical ailments including pneumonia and the death of his wife, Lynne "Angel" Harvey in May 2008.
The guy was simply an institution, and the precursor to what talk radio is today. I can remember times back to the early 70s, as a little kid, listening to his broadcasts in my grandmas kitchen. Shed have him on as she was preparing her usual fantastic fried chicken. I just always sorta associated one with the other. Was like a Sunday evening ritual. Now theyre both gone.
Rest in peace Mr. Harvey. Youll be sorely missed.
(sorry for the personal stuff...just wanted to pay tribute))

wow
Shame on Michael Steele for pandering to the likes of DL Hughley and that ignorant hip-hop piece of shit from Public Enemy.
Michael Steele just sold out Rush Limbaugh to please those two assholes. He's going to drive the GOP off the cliff.

Come to think of it, I first listened to Rush the day after Clinton won the election in 1992 and I committed to the Republican Party after working the previous night with snarky smartass j-students.

*sigh*
I'll have to dig around @ my dad's house - I stashed away a couple of PH Show records that I snagged back when I was in High School...
I was an intern at a radio station at the time, and one of my jobs was to track the daily PH Show, which at the time was recorded on, well, records (no, not tape. Records). Every week we recieved a bundle of that week's shows, and were supposed to return them once played (quite frankly, no one wanted to keep them - they were the cheapest possible plastic records)... but one week, Paul mentioned my Dad's hometown, so that record managed to, well, vanish from the return envelope.
RIP, Paul Harvey.

As to the matter of the hip hop tendencies of Michael Steele, it seems one day he hits the right note and the next day he hits a sour one: perhaps it's because he favors this hip-hop/rap nonsense, which requires nothing more that a willingness to look ignorant in public and an audience stupid enough to waste time listening to the resultant noise. I recall seeing a tape of NWA with tjhat human pez dispenser up front, Flava Flave. He had a full sized wall clock hanging around his neck, a mouth full of capped gold teeth and was shaking his head like he was trying to get water out of his ear or maybe he had an ear infection. Either way, his spasmodic head-shaking and repetetive mumbling of "Boooyeee" made his head hurt.
I was glad when NWA faded from the scene, and I would have no qualms about hearing that a grand piano fell on that skeleton wrapped in electrical tape, Flave, a la Wile E. Coyote (Sooper Gee Nee Uss!). Maybe ACME Products makes instant Untalented Asshole Remover® and Wile E. can use some to erase Flave from the surface of the planet. Tragic thing is that untalented idiot has already reproduced, repeatedly. Which tell us one of two things:
1. He's hung like a mule and just as dumb...
2. He finds women who are as dumb as a mule.
Either way, the Mules get dinged in their self esteem for the association with this melanin-enhanced pipe-cleaner assclown...
I leave the further insulting of an "art" where people take pride in digging grooves into perfectly good records to others. That should be easy.
Later,
Groovy.
Sandman.
RIP Mr. Harvey. You were the very best at your craft. You will be missed.

Paul Harvey has indeed been around for a very long time. I first started listening to him in the early 1960s when I was a kid and had first discovered talk radio (yes, the basic format has been around at least that long). The man was a consummate pro, something we have not seen in the media in a very long time.

Hey Banjo,
Quit trying to defend your negative commenting ass. A great man, who obviously spread comfort and uplifting messages, has died and all you want to do is piss on his memory. If I recall Walt Disney got a dishonorable discharge but on balance he improved the world greatly.
Losing Paul Harvey is like losing a life long friend. Life goes on but it is a poorer place.

Anyone else remember when he was on TV? Brief commentaries, syndicated to local newscasts in the 70s.
He kind of lost me in recent years, never missing a chance to call Iraq an "endless, pointless war". That was disappointing.

Your absolutely right! I checked it out. If my memory serves I was given the incorrect poop about Walt Disney by my DI 40 years ago. Damn, that's like a long time to be misinformed. Thanks for the education.

I used to share an office with a WWII vet and original NASA employee who listened to Paul Harvey every day. I wish I had written down the stories that Mr. White told during our lunch break, they were just as interesting or better than Harvey's rest of the story. Mr. White passed away some years ago, but I always thought of him whenever I heard Paul Harvey. God rest them both.

There were three of Harvey's stories that stuck with me for years. The first was the story of how a clumsy young man was repeatedly cheated by his partner in the bar business and determined to learn more about the law to protect himself (Lincoln). The second was about a very poor child born in very poor conditions and due to very poor medical assistance became partially paralyzed and overcame (Sylvester Stallone). The third story I remember because Harvey managed to make me think, genuinely, about the human condition. Although today I can't recall the name of the subject, the story was about the absolute necessity of human touch. A human cannot exist in a normal human state without physical contact and the story was about a disfigured man who had spent his entire adult life with virtually no human physical contact when he met a woman who saw past the disfigurement. It was a heart-breaking story and he told it so beautifully.
Harvey will be missed and will never, ever be replaced.
