Palin Scandal of the Hour
— Slublog

The campaign is still playing "Barracuda" at McCain/Palin rallies.

LEBANON, Ohio (CNN) – The rock band "Heart" may have asked John McCain and Sarah Palin stop playing their song "Barracuda" at their rallies, but the campaign is apparently paying no heed.
Oh, those heartless bastards! How dare they not honor the wishes of these sensitive artistes. Oh, the humanity!

But wait...

But the McCain camp said last week that it had paid for and obtained all necessary licenses before using the song.
Oh, never mind then. Ladies, take the money and run. This has got to be better than watching American Idol wannabees massacre "Alone" again and again, right?

Do conservative celebrities whine this much when their art is used by the other side? I don't recall a lot of complaining by Ronnie Dunn (a Thompson supporter) when Barack Obama used the Brooks & Dunn tune "Only in America" as the benediction last song of his rally. Heh. Via Tony737 in Hot Air's comments, they should have considered this song:

Sarah Palin: Hammer of the gods...

Title of the song might not be the best for McCain's campaign, though.

I have the pleasure of working with musicians and 98% of them are libs, (that’s why I drink). Most them just don’t get it. They put their music out there to make money and then bitch when they do. They say they want to make a statement with their song/music and when someone else uses their song to make a statement that dosen’t fit what they wanted they get all pissy.

In the case of Heart they stand to make some good money from a song that was DEAD years ago and was brought back to life by McCain and Palin.

Shut up girls, you got lucky.

10 One of the song's co-writers, who's also a big Obama supporter, is actually pretty pleased with the choice. He likes how he gets to talk about his candidate and make a buck off the royalties...

11 Incredible. Leftards willingly blind themselves. Why are they so threatened by this single woman? A silly Christbag with a 'tard kid and a moose gun? They really believe their own spin. When conservatives refused to denounce, condemn and burn at the figurative stake a woman whose daughter is pregnant out of wedlock, they upended and contradicted the most sacred (I use that word literally, as leftism is a secular religion) beliefs of the Left: that conservatives hate women, especially pregnant women without husbands. How can we RethugliKKKans be so cruel as to treat her not only with kindness but full-throated support? It's teh hypocrisy the Left cries, and finds itself faced with reality instead of a mirror of its own bigotry. We didn't behave like the Neanderthals they think we are... and it's so unfair!

12 To Sara Palin:

You repugs should have a heart and stop using this song.  Sure, the repugs are crazy on you, but this is nonsense.  They asked you politely to stop using their song.  These dreams that Obama, the magic man, talks about are important to us as a nation -- a people together.

What about love?  Don't you care about that?  You appear not to.  You conservative rather be alone.  Will you ever stop abusing these creative ladies?  In a word: Never.

Now that IS interesting...

If Camp McCain "paid for and obtained all necessary licenses before using the song", one wonders when they started negotiations. And does that not prove (assuming such was necessary) that this, 'Oh, he chose her at the last second, no vetting, etc" is in fact lie number 12,487 about her?

Of course, "People are lying about Sarah Palin". Also "Sun expected to rise in east". But still, purchasing the rights to 'Barracuda' seems quiet proof that they have been serious, and smart, about Palin for quite some time now.

Saw this one

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/08/cbsnews_investigates/main4427776.shtml?source=mostpop_story

Amazing that not only does she talk about helping the community, she actually organizes a voter referendum (not a council vote) and gets a result. What new community building did Zero make? Maybe the spear thrust inthe speech was clear, being a mayor is like a community organizer, with responsibilities

And then there is this quote: "CBS News obtained 86 pages of city council documents that show Palin sought to justify the tax increase to fund the sports complex in part because the private sector had not stepped in to fill the gap. She noted the strong support in the community as a reason to move ahead." .... There is a conservative principle in there, first see if private enterprise can solve the issue without gov't involvement.

24 AndrewX, they didn't 'negotiate', they paid a standard fee to the Artist's Guild folk. Basically, they're only barred from using it in a commercial or something lasting with the stock fee. If they had Gretchen Wilson do it, they could use that in commercials and some other things. And they could probably tweak the lyrics too. I do think they've known their VP pick for a long damn time. When they initially floated Lieberman, it was more serious than two weeks ago. That was entirely 'lowering expectations'. Note how testy Ace's note was about the veep pick.

The McCain/Palin show was here in Kansas City yesterday morning.  I watched it on a live-stream feed from work.  They played lots of great songs prior to their arrival and afterwards, but I did not hear Barracuda played (and I was looking for it).

I did remember the following tunes:

- AC/DC - "Thunderstruck" (Hell Yes!)

- Kool & Gang - "Celebration" (as always)

 - Van Halen - "Dreams"  ("Higher & Higher")

I can't remember any others right now.

I WISH they would add the following:

- We Are Family - (sister sledge)

- Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (steam)

- Louie, Louie (kingsmen)

- Hot, Hot, Hot (Buster Poindexter)

Posted this elswhere, but perhaps this is more an appropriate venue.

So will this never end
They smeared you again
From my tv I had to turn away
They smile like the sun
kisses for everyone
But then they tell tales -- it never fails.

They're lyin' so low in the weeds
Tryin' so hard to ambush you
But you'll have them down, down, down on their knees
Now wouldn't ya, Saracuda!

Barack and Biden when they saw you as VP
met up with a purpose for thee
Too Right, all wrong -- Selling a song
A Flame war, whisper game.

Since you're the real thing
that won't do the trick
So they'll make something new quick
You're gonna Burn, burn, burn them cause you're no hick
Now aren't ya, Saracuda!

Not real or genteel their talkin' heads said
dive down deep to the bottom they sped
and you I think, it might give you the blues too.

All night and all the next
the spawn kept up their attacks
garbage from the media pools -- silly, silly fools

But the real thing beats their old schtick
so they better make up with you real quick
because McCain burn, burn, burned them with your pick
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Sarah, Sarah Barracuda...

This is off-topic, but Biden stepped in it big time today, at a town-hall event in Columbia, Missouri:

"I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy, because there's joy to it as well, the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect," Biden said at a rally in Columbia, Missouri. "Well, guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?"

Palin's infant son Trig has Down Syndrome. GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain supports stem-cell research, but his running mate reportedly does not."

Sick.

I was reading to comments in the CNN site.  Wow... I was actually surprised at the total venom and nastiness from libs over there towards Palin.

They are running scared.

I was also amused at the cries of "Ruthuglicans don't respect the artists!  If they do this, how can anybody expect them to respect the American people!".  They must has skipped right past the point where the writer points out that the licenses to use the song were rightfully obtained and paid for.

What tools.

The One's theme song: Big Rock Candy Mountain.

Of course, we'd expect him to include the final, oft-neglected stanza:

The punk rolled up his big blue eyes And said to the jocker, "Sandy, I've hiked and hiked and wandered too, But I ain't seen any candy. I've hiked and hiked till my feet are sore And I'll be damned if I hike any more To be buggered sore like a hobo's whore In the Big Rock Candy Mountains."

8 Did Sam Halen bitch when they used "Right Now" in Dayton?  Haven't heard a word about that.

I think I saw someone mention it in the comments here.  Hagar thought it was cool.  The rest of Van Halen, not so much.  Hagar is also supposed to be one of the nicest guys in rock too.

And I just remember what I have heard on The Bob and Tom Show.  "We've met Sammy Hagar, we've met David Lee Roth.  And man Eddie must be a dick."

37 This whole clusterfuck reminds me of when Elvis Costello was on SNL years ago.  He wanted to play one of his songs (dunno which one because it was early in his career and the songs were all short) and the cocksucker producer (Lorne Michaels, I think; I don't know 'cause I've hardly ever watched the show) said "No, it's too long" and suggested some other.  Elvis said "Ok" and that was that but when his segment came up, he and the band lit into whatever song they originally planned on and, since the show is live, shoving Macy's Christmas tree up Michael's bunghole.  I happened to be watching and thinking "Wow, Costello looks *really* intense" only to find out that douche Michaels was flipping him off away from the camera and Elvis was just bearing down harder.

Add to that:
Nugent- "Little Miss Dangerous"
AC/DC-"She's Got Balls"

None of these match the deep, sociopolitical lyricism of Heart's generation-inspiring "Barracuda" but they'll do in a pinch.

In the year or so after the Iran Hostage crisis, during his solo career (after Montrose, before VH), Sammy had a huge neon portrait of Khomeni lit up above the stage, and they'd blow it up to start off the show. Needless to say, the crowd loved it.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at September 09, 2008 09:55 AM (Ds4I5)

46 Here's something I've been looking for and finally saw it when I wasn't looking for it:

While the increased vote share a candidate receives following his convention usually diminishes, candidates who lead after the second convention usually remain the leader a month after the convention. This is based on a review of historical Gallup data since 1964 -- the first year for which Gallup could reliably measure convention bounces. The only possible exception to this general pattern occurred in 1980, when Jimmy Carter had a slim one-point advantage after the Democratic National Convention but he and Ronald Reagan were exactly tied one month after Carter was nominated for a second term.

The nut is that whoever is ahead after the conventions usually wins. Of course, as always with stuff like this, it's only true until it's not, but this seems pretty solid. Obama is the type of candidate who is best nursing a small lead. Has he ever, in the primaries or wherever, come from behind to win? Also, doesn't he almost always under-perform his pre-voting poll numbers? I've been thinking for months that if McCain could stay within 2-3 percentage points, he was in good shape since Obama's support has been reported to be around 5% LESS than pre-voting polls show. Obama BEHIND is a recipe for a McCain blow-out. George Will and others have stated that Obama is a fundamentally weak candidate, and when he is shown to be vulnerable and behind he loses his cachet and stands to be buried when it comes down to the final results.

The most interesting numbers I'm looking at recently are Michigan and Pennsylvania (or New Pennsylvania, as Obama calls it). Seems like a very real possibility he will lose one or both, and if he does, it's game over. Obama has no scenario where he wins and loses either of those. Since they both are in the East, we could be looking at an early night Nov. 4, which would be a wonderful result.

My art teacher told us about this (while going on about how awesome Picaso was).  When you put your art out there to make a statement it becomes part of the conversation.  The next step of the conversation is that your piece may be picked up and used to make a different statement and thus move the conversation forward some.

At the time I was more than slightly annoyed that every semi conservative and traditional artist was being criticized for saying nothing new so I fired back with "If I pull the feminist manifesto out of my butt, does that mean I'm moving the feminist conversation forward?"

She didn't like my example, but she did concede that yes it'd be adding to the conversation.
