I still remember the last time I heard Paul Harvey on the radio. They played him on Armed Forces Radio while I was in Korea back in the late 80's. He did this story about Jessica Hahn's mother dying. His catch line was that she died from a broken heart (presumably because her daughter was a whore). I was only 21 years old at the time. My first thought was "What an asshole. Somebody's mom just died and you're trying to make them feel worse about it?" I turned off the radio and avoided his crappy commentaries for the rest of his career. If he had something worthwhile to say I'm afraid I missed it based on that one episode.

Looked at the article about the blue State collapse and all the tax increases. He leaves a couple of things out. First not only are some of the blue States like CA raising their taxes because of the perennial “shortfall” but red States like mine get a defacto tax increase as well. You see many States have their taxes tied to the federal tax so if the fed tax goes up the State does as well.

 

Also, one of the things that really pisses me off about the way the blue States are collapsing is what happens as they go down. A lot of the union assholes from the rust belt have moved South because their companies collapsed from pressure of the unions and high taxes. Do you think they would learn their lesson? Hell no! They come down here and talk about how good it was and immediately start pressing for higher taxes and unions. Talk about stupid mother fuckers. I always tell them to climb back on their sorry ass union horses and take their ass back where they came from.

What they do is scramble all over the carcasses of the taxpayer and fellow communists to see who will get the biggest piece of the cash to spend on their own pet projects. That way the next time the economy goes in the crapper they can raise taxes again.

 

And they wonder why blue states are failing.  Why is it that they NEVER come up with plans to reduce government spending during shortfalls. And if a gov like CA threatens to reduce spending why is it that they ALLWAYS go after the really needed stuff instead of the socialist programs?

One thing the “rich” people may be thinking with this new tax burden is that it will go back to the “pre-Reagan” tax brackets and tax code. Remember those rates where the top tax brackets were up in the 75% range. Well that was a big lie because there was a LOT of deductions back then that were available to the “rich” and nobody with half a brain (or an accountant) paid those kind of taxes.

 

All of those deductions were eliminated when the y reduced the rates and “simplified” the taxes. Those so-called Reagan tax cuts “for the rich” actually increased the taxes that a lot of people paid. Now the Obambi is going to raise the rates back plus keep the “no deductions” strategy on top of the fact that he will take away the home mortgage deduction as well.

I keep seeing these little tidbits on the news about the so-called winners and losers under the Obama tax plan after seeing a blatant set of bullshit on CNN yesterday I decided to check directly. I actually downloaded a copy of the budget.

 

I sure do not see where they are getting these winners and losers from because the budget has NOTHING in it about the tax plan except generalities from which you can not determine anything.

 

What is truly  amazing about this POS is the fact that it appears to be nothing but more propaganda for Obama policies. It is not a budget proposal like anything I have ever seen.  The first chapter is the OBama speech. The second chapter is titled “Inheriting A Legacy Of Misplaced Priorities”. So you can pretty much determine what that is all about. It contains little gems like this “Prudent investments in education, clean energy, health care, and infrastructure were sacrificed for huge tax cuts for the wealthy and well-connected.”

 

What is truly galling about this is that they use taxpayer dollars to fund this obvious political propaganda. On top of all that it is the typical commiecrat big lie. I went back and looked at Bush’s budget and it has a lot of the general discussion as well and talks about how to build a stronger economy, as well as the problems with banking and housing. Nowhere in it does it hit on Democrats. This is especially noteworthy since the Democrats are the ones who caused this mess.

Normally, after the drops we've seen since Obama took office, many investors would be jumping in about now under the premise of a "buying opportunity." While the bulk would be panicking and dumping out of fear over greed, the savvy guys would be buying on the cheap and make good money on the upswing.

We're in a dramatically different scenario now, though. The administration is stoking the panic. It's setting tax policy that not only punishes those with wealth via taxation, it commits the nation to burdensome regulation and redistribution. It demonizes the very institutions that provide the jobs and cash flow to keep a population productive... and employed. The economic engine is being sabotaged with cheap demagoguery and the borrowing of historically vast sums of money that this country, assuming it can be productive in a socialistic environment, must pay back at very high costs. Our children's children will still be paying for this. In essence some of their freedom is being removed today to subsidize a government expansion.

How does a market, one based on capitalism, behave under these new parameters? I don't believe we have anyone alive today who has seen anything like this before. Why would anyone enter the market now with any confidence that this is a low and a rebound is coming? Administration policy, or at least the feelers and legislation we're seeing from Team Obama, indicate that capitalism has a giant target on it and government will increase its control of the collective pursestrings.

We are nowhere near the bottom even if Team Obama starts talking it up. A) We know his words are meaningless if not actual lies, and B) the policies we see being formulated are not conducive to productivity either philosophically or tangibly.

105 O/T:  Does anyone watch the "home and graden shows"?  They used to tout flipping and renovating and flipping and it was a big thing for them.  Now, with shows like "My House is Worth What?" they seem to be finally reflecting what is going on in real estate.  We always laugh at the title since before the downturn people were getting this good news, shocking figures, plenty of profit.  Now, the new shows reflect the real estate downturn and things have shifted to phrases like "well, in this market you would be lucky to get".   Very funny.

Who wants to wait that long to guess if/when more receptive tax policy is employed? How much of what is "cash" sitting out now will return to U.S. markets? Everyone just got burned and their equity collapsed. Will those who still have a shirt on their back wait, or will they look to move their positions to overseas markets instead?

Sure, it's a global recession and maybe we're "best" of a bad lot, but confidence in the U.S. engine has assuredly dropped. Capitalists will be shopping elsewhere. Maybe not buying, but shopping nonetheless. "We" have really fucked things up, and by "we," I mostly mean Congress. And by "Congress," I mostly mean Democrats in Congress. Obama is just exacerbating it.

Does anyone watch the "home and graden shows?

 

I used to like watching all the home repair and renovation shows but they moved them to the DYI channel which I don’t get. I always thought all those shows like “Flip This House” were phony as hell anyway.

 

From what I have seen in the areas that had the big housing drop the prices still have not come down to what they should be. The last time I checked the houses in my old neighborhood in Castro Valley, CA were going for over $500/sq ft. That is ridiculous as they have priced themselves right out of the market for the average person.

110 Yep, now they are subtly "trying to tout going green" but I think that doesn't speak to their audience.  There are some states where the prices really haven't gone down as in other states.  Was reading an article in the times which I posted somewhere last night wherein they indicated that people in the Manhattan real estate market are walking away from million dolalr plus deposits and leaving them with developers.   When I read that it made me realize that the market in Manhattan hasn't experienced the crash yet.   But, in reading sites like dealbreaker and above the law you can see that a lot of high powered people who are very highly paid are now out of jobs so one would assume that the housing market in Manhattan will soon experience an adjustment of sorts.  I think rush pointed out in his speech something about NY having 8 million people supported by like 40 thousand.  So that makes you understand why the mayor of NYC and the governor of NY are panicing.   If these people are fired and they sell their homes and they leave NY then NY will lose its tax base.  In the meantime a college friend who lives there tells me that the unions (healthcare workers and teachers) have some scare tactic commercials out indicating schools will suffer and hospital will close.   My friend is thinking of moving out of NY and we were all having a discussion as to whether or not "the coming storm" as she calls it, can be ridden out or if NYC and NY state are a done deal.

The price of housing where I am at here in SC did not drop greatly but it didn’t increase greatly back during the boom either.  As for price of housing in Manhattan that is a different kind of market from the rest of the country. It is going to be high for those who are trying to buy in all the time because of rent control.  Rent control keeps the price of housing elevated above normal.

 

The same thing happens in the yuppie communities where the eco-idiots get them to pass these “green zone” laws. That artificially elevates the price of housing. What is laughable is when the communists get these kind of laws passed to suck up  to the green lobby they then have to fork over more money to the socialist side of their base because the “urban poor” can’t afford to live there anymore. It all turns into a vicious circle with the poor beleaguered tax payer taking gas.

 

It will last for a few years until it gets to the point that they drive the income producing people and companies away. That is where Michigan is now. And now they want the rest of the country to bail them out. As long as they have communists in charge they will get it as well.

I don’t think he nominated the governor of MI for anything. He did get the governor of AZ for Homeland Security and the mayor of Seattle for something.

 

As for rent control, the theory was that you freeze rent charges at the time the tenants move in. You can only raise rent after they move out and then by only a certain amount. The reality is as was stated above. Since you can not make any money off of renting nobody builds rental property and it becomes scarce. Since the landlords that were in place at the time the law was passed were stuck they essentially do noting to the buildings for upkeep because they can’t afford to. People who are in an apartment NEVER move because to do so would result in a rent increase.

 

Since nobody builds new units the cost of real estate goes through the roof, because no matter how hard they try, the communists haven’t been able to repeal the law of supply and demand yet.  Remember that in NYC when you are talking about housing what you are actually talking about is a condo. Google real estate for Manhattan some time and look at what it cost to rent a 500 sq ft apartment or to buy a 1000 sq ft loft. It will shock you. Once you see what it costs in the city pick any other city at random that does not have rent control (most) and does not have green space laws and compare costs.

I have just found that the rent control laws in NYC have undergone massive changes since I was in NY last.

Looks like they had a big reform in 1993 that allows new construction to be "not controlled" so maybe the things have eased up.

I suspect that if all of the city did that the prices would initially go up, but then come back down to a more realistic level.
