— Open Blog Item #1: Rich Karlgaard at Edgelings writes about The Coming Blue State Collapse. Apparently hes convinced that somehow paying much higher taxes during a deep recession will somehow hurt whats left of the economy. Hah! What a fool. Go leave snarky comments in his commenty thing.
Item #2: Taxation stories not your bag? Heres one about funbags: Breastfeeding While Driving Gets Woman a Ticket. Also while talking on her cell phone. This is an outrage of course. Why are hardworking Womyn-Americans being punished for multitasking? When confronted by the concerned motorist who ratted her out to the cops she had this to say in her own defense:
'You want to pop your titty out and breastfeed this kid?
Well played, madam well played indeed.

Well, according to the Fast Money guys Lousie Yamada thinks we are going lower. If Louise thinks we are going lower, we are going lower, she is a legendary chartist. And out of the 7 chartists they polled 4 others agreed with Louise. The other two CNBC had on all day Friday, giving the impression that the "we've hit bottom" group was the concensus. I guess they think their viewers are just stupid.

I think we'll be down in the mid 6k's by the end of next week. Obama seems like he's doing everything possible to make a disaster worse.
I still remember the last time I heard Paul Harvey on the radio. They played him on Armed Forces Radio while I was in Korea back in the late 80's. He did this story about Jessica Hahn's mother dying. His catch line was that she died from a broken heart (presumably because her daughter was a whore). I was only 21 years old at the time. My first thought was "What an asshole. Somebody's mom just died and you're trying to make them feel worse about it?" I turned off the radio and avoided his crappy commentaries for the rest of his career. If he had something worthwhile to say I'm afraid I missed it based on that one episode.

Then Steve isn't as bright as I thought he was. Or he's disguising his incredulity of it all by playing stupid so as not to appear fringe/alarmist and cause a panic or risk appearing partisan. I hate to be the one to tell him, but we're beyond that point. It's time to pull that lever.
It's a power play in flashing neon lights. Hell, Rahm Emanual - you know, that Chief-of-Staff tax-evader who holds a rather important position in Obama's ear - announced it outright. Create the crisis and ram through as much as possible as quickly as possible to implement power/redefine a nation before the opportunity gets wasted. While we're even obsessing over just the TARP of the day or the scale of the budget, who knows what all is getting buried within these behemoth bills? Even those voting for it don't know (or worse, do know). They're overloading the zone so no one can stop everything assuming there's anyone there to stop any of it at all.
Jesus tap-dancing Christ! This Democrat catechism will be the end post-WWII prosperity. It's about time these business leaders and economists with access to the soapbox start calling things like they are even if it's risky to do so. How much equity are they willing to lose before saying something other than, "Well, we're entering an extended downturn in the business cycle, old chap, but we'll just look for other safe shelters and ride this one out."

I hope these kernels of protest continue and grow and that the GOP can stiffen its backbone and obstruct long enough for a critical mass to be reached. "I'm here in place of a soldier/Marine/sailor/airman who is not permitted the right to demonstrate peacefully. You're auctioning off the country they fought to defend."
It only works if you are actually representing a military person though...otherwise you're "using the troops."

wrote this a few months ago in a snarky "signs of the end times". biblical prophecy + interpretation...
"
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. On the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end...
~Is. 9:6-7
So there will be this boy who is born, but he has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the government that is in place. People think he is wonderful and is going to just go around and make everyone peaceful, cuz he is cool like that. Oh, and he is going to grow the government he heads a boatload, which won't ever be shrunk. Like anyone has ever been able to shrink government.

my favorite is:
And they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?" And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies... And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues and nations, and all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him
~ RV 13:4-5, 7-8

Not surprising that people would just ignore it. The problem with the crap at the links I posted at 58 and 59 is that it is crazy, but it makes sense. The only thing I don't understand: why would the richest people in the world want a one world government? I realize it would give them temporarily insane amounts of power and wealth, but the world would collapse. The only way it makes sense is if they really believe it would work. If that is the case, we're fucked.

Looked at the article about the blue State collapse and all the tax increases. He leaves a couple of things out. First not only are some of the blue States like CA raising their taxes because of the perennial shortfall but red States like mine get a defacto tax increase as well. You see many States have their taxes tied to the federal tax so if the fed tax goes up the State does as well.
Also, one of the things that really pisses me off about the way the blue States are collapsing is what happens as they go down. A lot of the union assholes from the rust belt have moved South because their companies collapsed from pressure of the unions and high taxes. Do you think they would learn their lesson? Hell no! They come down here and talk about how good it was and immediately start pressing for higher taxes and unions. Talk about stupid mother fuckers. I always tell them to climb back on their sorry ass union horses and take their ass back where they came from.

Don't count on that. Too many of them still swallow everything the DemSM says as gospel. The Slimes and Compost call some people in Manhattan and DC for a poll, and voila, "68 percent of the public supports the stimulous"
Until the GOP delegates the likes of Frum, Noonan, Brooks, and Parker to court jester status and stops believing that Brian Williams and Katie Couric will treat them fairly, we're going to have to get a lot bigger and a lot louder.
Posted by: kbdabear at February 28, 2009 10:54 PM (miw86)
More on the tax issue; this from the story on Drudge of the new and novel ways of raising taxes.
Every state in the nation, including Massachusetts, needs to figure out a way of raising revenues, Mr. Walsh said. So we need to be creative.
During every economic downturn certain States, primarily blue in nature scramble to raise taxes because of revenue shortfalls. When the economy returns do they ever reduce taxes because they have a revenue surplus? Hahahahahaha that would mean hell has frozen over.
What they do is scramble all over the carcasses of the taxpayer and fellow communists to see who will get the biggest piece of the cash to spend on their own pet projects. That way the next time the economy goes in the crapper they can raise taxes again.
And they wonder why blue states are failing. Why is it that they NEVER come up with plans to reduce government spending during shortfalls. And if a gov like CA threatens to reduce spending why is it that they ALLWAYS go after the really needed stuff instead of the socialist programs?

They are doing what they are doing because the rich and the businessmen want it done, in the perhaps mistaken belief that it will further line their own pockets.
Posted by: flenser at March 01, 2009 02:38 AM (YYwji)
One thing the rich people may be thinking with this new tax burden is that it will go back to the pre-Reagan tax brackets and tax code. Remember those rates where the top tax brackets were up in the 75% range. Well that was a big lie because there was a LOT of deductions back then that were available to the rich and nobody with half a brain (or an accountant) paid those kind of taxes.
All of those deductions were eliminated when the y reduced the rates and simplified the taxes. Those so-called Reagan tax cuts for the rich actually increased the taxes that a lot of people paid. Now the Obambi is going to raise the rates back plus keep the no deductions strategy on top of the fact that he will take away the home mortgage deduction as well.

I keep seeing these little tidbits on the news about the so-called winners and losers under the Obama tax plan after seeing a blatant set of bullshit on CNN yesterday I decided to check directly. I actually downloaded a copy of the budget.
I sure do not see where they are getting these winners and losers from because the budget has NOTHING in it about the tax plan except generalities from which you can not determine anything.
What is truly amazing about this POS is the fact that it appears to be nothing but more propaganda for Obama policies. It is not a budget proposal like anything I have ever seen. The first chapter is the OBama speech. The second chapter is titled Inheriting A Legacy Of Misplaced Priorities. So you can pretty much determine what that is all about. It contains little gems like this Prudent investments in education, clean energy, health care, and infrastructure were sacrificed for huge tax cuts for the wealthy and well-connected.
What is truly galling about this is that they use taxpayer dollars to fund this obvious political propaganda. On top of all that it is the typical commiecrat big lie. I went back and looked at Bushs budget and it has a lot of the general discussion as well and talks about how to build a stronger economy, as well as the problems with banking and housing. Nowhere in it does it hit on Democrats. This is especially noteworthy since the Democrats are the ones who caused this mess.

It's beginning to look like the MSM knows Obama is in way over his head and they're trying their best to help the jug eared clown out. Yesterday, for example, the AP ran an analysis of Barry's budget that said it has no chance of success unless we have a strong economic recovery very quickly -- and that's highly unlikely. Message from AP to Obama: scale back your budget a bit or it'll trash the economy and we'll have a pubbie prez come 2012.
They're also trying to talk up the economy for Barry since they've figured out he won't do it himself. Bloomberg News (normally in the tank for The O) ran a surprisingly straightforeward article about Warren Buffett:
Buffett Says Economy Will Be In Shambles for 2009
Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire Warren Buffett said the economy will be in shambles for the rest of this year as financial firms take losses tied to reckless loans made during the housing boom.
. . .
While Buffett and business partner Charlie Munger cant predict how stocks will perform in 2009, theyre certain that the economy will be in shambles throughout 2009 -- and, for that matter, probably well beyond, he wrote.
How does the AP cover the same story?
Buffett upbeat despite Berkshires worst year
OMAHA, Neb. Warren Buffett remains optimistic about the prospects for his company and the nation even though Berkshire Hathaway Inc. turned in its worst performance in 2008 and the widely-followed investor says the economy will likely remain a mess beyond this year.
Buffett used his annual letter Saturday to reassure shareholders that the Omaha-based insurance and investment company has the financial strength needed to withstand the current turmoil and improve after the worst showing of Buffetts 44 years as chairman and CEO.
Buffett wrote hes certain the economy will be in shambles throughout 2009 and, for that matter, probably well beyond but that conclusion does not tell us whether the stock market will rise or fall.
How the hell can the AP conclude that Buffett is optimistic if he's predicting an economy in the crapper for over a year?
They can't. They just make that shit up because they know that somebody has to talk up the economy and jug ears is too stupid or stubborn to do it himself. And they can't let him fail. They can't let him self destruct. They're also running stories about increasing civilian and troop deaths in Afghanistan. Message from AP to Obama: increasing troops in Afghanistan will probably increase deaths and you'll have your own unpopular war. And you don't want that.
It has been only five weeks Barry's world is imploding big time. It's gonna be an Epic Fail in record time. Too bad he's taking the rest of us for this ride.Posted by: Tinian at March 01, 2009 05:22 AM (Ohodx)

That would be fun. I'd flip the ticket because, well, Limbaugh is not only a great communicator, he can recollect a longer history and weave it into conservative principles with ease. He clearly has that edge on Palin. But yeah, that would be a dream ticket for me, too.
The best thing about Limbaugh is that the MSM will try to paint him in the most unfavorable light, but if the audience gets to hear Limbaugh and all of the context of his speech, it'll realize the extent of the lies/smears against him. He's terrific at leading people to the conclusion he wants you to reach by providing examples and extrapolating to the big picture... and he does it humorously. Not humorously like Coulter who is considerably more biting (and who I adore) but softer as he turns the knife on his enemies.
Besides, do you think Limbaugh would sit idly by as the MSM and Democrats (BIRM) tried to tear apart Palin? Limbaugh would eviscerate even the juggernaut that is mainstream media. He's just that good. I've never been the biggest fan of Rush's, but he is solid and that speech was simply outstanding. And necessary.
The GOP needs to listen to Limbaugh. The Right knows it. The Left knows it. The Left fears it which is why they'll continue going after him to try and isolate, target, and discredit him. It's an Alinsky tactic Democrats and the MSM (BIRM) will collude to employ.

Normally, after the drops we've seen since Obama took office, many investors would be jumping in about now under the premise of a "buying opportunity." While the bulk would be panicking and dumping out of fear over greed, the savvy guys would be buying on the cheap and make good money on the upswing.
We're in a dramatically different scenario now, though. The administration is stoking the panic. It's setting tax policy that not only punishes those with wealth via taxation, it commits the nation to burdensome regulation and redistribution. It demonizes the very institutions that provide the jobs and cash flow to keep a population productive... and employed. The economic engine is being sabotaged with cheap demagoguery and the borrowing of historically vast sums of money that this country, assuming it can be productive in a socialistic environment, must pay back at very high costs. Our children's children will still be paying for this. In essence some of their freedom is being removed today to subsidize a government expansion.
How does a market, one based on capitalism, behave under these new parameters? I don't believe we have anyone alive today who has seen anything like this before. Why would anyone enter the market now with any confidence that this is a low and a rebound is coming? Administration policy, or at least the feelers and legislation we're seeing from Team Obama, indicate that capitalism has a giant target on it and government will increase its control of the collective pursestrings.
We are nowhere near the bottom even if Team Obama starts talking it up. A) We know his words are meaningless if not actual lies, and B) the policies we see being formulated are not conducive to productivity either philosophically or tangibly.

You may be right. Actually, I kinda hope you're right. CPAC hasn't carried that much weight in recent years. I'm not so sure it ever did, but I haven't been that political for very long.
But yes, the environment has changed. Compassionate conservatism has been a political failure. It has contributed to government bloat and paved the way for losses to liberals and expanded spending/control. It's now out of control. Acutely out of control. Enough out of control for people to worry what is going on.
This could be good. Instead of a slow boil of the frog, Team Obama may actually singe it. This will stimulate action. It is stimulating action. Will it be enough and in time? I dunno. But enough of the nation is waking up to at least look at conservatism instead of the GOP. If trends continue, the GOP will have to adapt or die. If it moves left, it's dead. The nation as we know it will be too. Could it swing back? Look back in history and see how many nations do - at least the ones that go socialist, whatever the manifestation. Hell, look at Europe today. Democracies sure, but socialists.
I honestly don't know how far left our nation has moved. The fact that Obama/Pelosi/Reid are at the helm is shocking to me, an indictment both of the mental capacity of our constituency and the philosophical laziness from the GOP. Hopefully CPAC can save the Right because I don't have faith that the GOP will. See Specter, Collins, Snowe, et al.

But the Vomit can spend a trillion dollars on global warming and shutdown industry right and left.

I think you hit the nail on the head about the lies.
On the one hand, we have what's left of the 52% who treat ambiguity as a projection screen for their own hopes and dreams.
On the other hand, we have people grounded enough in reality to know that an unabashed liar like Teleprompter Jesus is completely unpredictable and can be trusted only to bring uncertainty.
Hence the market decline.
@94
As for "singeing the frog," I expect the overreach because of the perfect storm of incompetence, ignorance, and arrogance rising in the left. The extent of this overreach is going to determine whether we correct this at the ballot box in 2010 with votes or in the streets with blood. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst--I'll leave it to others to decide for themselves which one is which.

While that's certainly the main domain of the Left, what's Gingrich's, for example, latest views on this? I have to look at him askance from now on because of his commercials with Pelosi in favor of addressing "global climate change." Is he off that bandwagon now seeing the folly of it, or is he still pandering to the "middle" as a political angle?
I can't keep up with these cap/trade/carbon-credit schemers.

I quit watching Meet The Press and all the other liars on TV. Even Fox has got to be nothing but a kiss OBamas ass new. They never have a real conservative on their shows anymore. Sometimes they have AC so they can try to make fun of her but that is only when she has a new book out.

That's exactly why I said that I will leave it to others to determine which response to the overreach is "best" and which is "worst."
The lasting damage is from the laws that don't sunset and that the GOP is unwilling to expend the political capital in an attempt to overturn.
In my "best" scenario the laws are easily overturned because any remaining political opposition know that if they don't STFU, they've seen their last sunrise.
Posted by: MikeO at March 01, 2009 07:35 AM (4sSHg)
That right there is the key word. Well, maybe "certainty with what capitalists see as a hostile environment" fits in somewhere, too. Uncertainty would lead to short-term volatility. The latter leads to longer-term abandonment -- possibly permanent if another country's markets and tax policy loosens.
richard mcenroe: "NOBODY is going to jump in and buy when they don't know what Pelosi, Reid and The Great and Powerful Ob will interfere with next..."
No doubt. Plus, when inflation kicks in several quarters from now after all that government cash starts flowing, the liquidity pulled out and sitting on the sidelines now will become less valuable. Who wants to wait that long to guess if/when more receptive tax policy is employed? How much of what is "cash" sitting out now will return to U.S. markets? Everyone just got burned and their equity collapsed. Will those who still have a shirt on their back wait, or will they look to move their positions to overseas markets instead?
Sure, it's a global recession and maybe we're "best" of a bad lot, but confidence in the U.S. engine has assuredly dropped. Capitalists will be shopping elsewhere. Maybe not buying, but shopping nonetheless. "We" have really fucked things up, and by "we," I mostly mean Congress. And by "Congress," I mostly mean Democrats in Congress. Obama is just exacerbating it.

Does anyone watch the "home and graden shows?
I used to like watching all the home repair and renovation shows but they moved them to the DYI channel which I dont get. I always thought all those shows like Flip This House were phony as hell anyway.
From what I have seen in the areas that had the big housing drop the prices still have not come down to what they should be. The last time I checked the houses in my old neighborhood in Castro Valley, CA were going for over $500/sq ft. That is ridiculous as they have priced themselves right out of the market for the average person.
Posted by: Vic at March 01, 2009 07:39 AM (f6os6)
@105 silly RE: "Flip this House," et al
One of the few upsides to this crisis has been the loss of the market for those dumbass, lightly disguised reality shows. Those shows had already wrecked HGTV and were creeping-in to destroy DIY Network.

My take--although I haven't gone whole-hog yet--is that I'll be buying toys (guns, ammo, probably a new truck, some other things I did without for a while) with a wait-and-see approach to next year's tax code.
As an independent consultant with a part-time federal government gig (don't ask), I can head to Galt's Gulch at the drop of a hat.
If I'm making just enough to feed, clothe, and house me and mine, there isn't going to be anything going into any markets.
Posted by: MikeO at March 01, 2009 08:00 AM (4sSHg)
I think there's going to be a lot of that going on here. The basics and nothing more. Hello economic malaise. Obama's projections for growth in GDP, we already know, are inflated. Well, maybe if he can kill productivity fast enough and severely enough, the projections come out right. I mean, the lower one can sink productivity, the easier it is to increase it by a relatively higher percentage when it, eventually, rebounds.

The price of housing where I am at here in SC did not drop greatly but it didnt increase greatly back during the boom either. As for price of housing in Manhattan that is a different kind of market from the rest of the country. It is going to be high for those who are trying to buy in all the time because of rent control. Rent control keeps the price of housing elevated above normal.
The same thing happens in the yuppie communities where the eco-idiots get them to pass these green zone laws. That artificially elevates the price of housing. What is laughable is when the communists get these kind of laws passed to suck up to the green lobby they then have to fork over more money to the socialist side of their base because the urban poor cant afford to live there anymore. It all turns into a vicious circle with the poor beleaguered tax payer taking gas.
It will last for a few years until it gets to the point that they drive the income producing people and companies away. That is where Michigan is now. And now they want the rest of the country to bail them out. As long as they have communists in charge they will get it as well.

It doesn't work. All it accomplishes is the creation of slums and abandoned property because landlords can't afford to fix anything.

Vic, didn't he just nominate the governor of Michigan for some cabinet position? How does "rent control" work? I had no idea that you could control rents and then control housing prices.
LOL, lots o questions there.
I dont think he nominated the governor of MI for anything. He did get the governor of AZ for Homeland Security and the mayor of Seattle for something.
As for rent control, the theory was that you freeze rent charges at the time the tenants move in. You can only raise rent after they move out and then by only a certain amount. The reality is as was stated above. Since you can not make any money off of renting nobody builds rental property and it becomes scarce. Since the landlords that were in place at the time the law was passed were stuck they essentially do noting to the buildings for upkeep because they cant afford to. People who are in an apartment NEVER move because to do so would result in a rent increase.
Since nobody builds new units the cost of real estate goes through the roof, because no matter how hard they try, the communists havent been able to repeal the law of supply and demand yet. Remember that in NYC when you are talking about housing what you are actually talking about is a condo. Google real estate for Manhattan some time and look at what it cost to rent a 500 sq ft apartment or to buy a 1000 sq ft loft. It will shock you. Once you see what it costs in the city pick any other city at random that does not have rent control (most) and does not have green space laws and compare costs.
Posted by: Vic at March 01, 2009 09:08 AM (f6os6)
Posted by: Vic at March 01, 2009 09:13 AM (f6os6)
The housing situation will deteriorate in other ways. Most important, unless the appropriate rent increases are allowed, landlords will not trouble to remodel apartments or make other improvements in them. In fact, where rent control is particularly unrealistic or oppressive, landlords will not even keep rented houses or apartments in tolerable repair. Not only will they have no economic incentive to do so; they may not even have the funds. The rent-control laws, among their other effects, create ill feeling between landlords who are forced to take minimum returns or even losses, and tenants who resent the landlords failure to make adequate repairs. . . .When these consequences are so clear that they become glaring, there is of course no acknowledgment on the part of the imposers of rent control that they have blundered. Instead, they denounce the capitalist system. They contend that private enterprise has failed again; that private enterprise cannot do the job. Therefore, they argue, the State must step in and itself build low-rent housing.
This has been the almost universal result in every country that was involved in World War II or imposed rent control in an effort to offset monetary inflation.
Posted by: Deety at March 01, 2009 09:21 AM (1jglO)
I have just found that the rent control laws in NYC have undergone massive changes since I was in NY last.
Looks like they had a big reform in 1993 that allows new construction to be "not controlled" so maybe the things have eased up.
We need someone from NY to chime in.

See Alphabet City ca. 2005 above for an illustration of the 1993 reforms. I only saw Alphabet City in 1990 before the reforms while I was attending school in NYC for a year.
Why did I leave NYU? I seem to remember douchebag protesters outside my dorm incoherently mewling about the first Iraq war. That and the required freshman comp. class where the only assignments involved "expressing ourselves" by slapping ACT UP stickers on light posts around the Village.
Posted by: Deety at March 01, 2009 09:40 AM (1jglO)
It looks like with the reforms alphabet city has blown up with prices going between 750 to 1200 per sq ft.
I suspect that if all of the city did that the prices would initially go up, but then come back down to a more realistic level.
Right now, it is hard to determine what the real price of real estate in the city should be. The government has had its fingers in the pie for too long.
Posted by: Vic at March 01, 2009 09:58 AM (f6os6)
They should pay you to live there. I can't count the number of contract gig offers I had in Manhattan. I turned every one down. Closest I ever went was Parsipany(sp?) NJ and that was plenty close enough.
