Overnight Open Thread (5-11-2014)
— Maetenloch

Have to leave the bunker because social function. So everyone tonight enjoys an AoSHQ Premium early ONT.

Your Congress at Work

Here some of the current bills that have been introduced:

Apollo Lunar Landing Legacy Act: Would establish the Apollo Lunar Landing Sites National Historical Park on the moon. - Chief sponsor Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.)

Read the Bills Act: Would require legislation to be posted online one week before it comes up for a vote. The House version, sponsored by two Republicans, would exempt declarations of war. The Senate version, sponsored by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), would require that lawmakers sign an affidavit, under penalty of perjury, attesting that they "attentively" read the measure or were present throughout the entire reading. They do not have to sign the affidavit if they vote against the bill. - House Bill's chief sponsor Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.)

Department of Peacebuilding Act: Would establish a Cabinet-level federal department, headed by the secretary of Peacebuilding, dedicated to reducing violence domestically and internationally. - Chief Sponsor Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland)

(The idea of a Department of Peace had been championed for more than a decade by then-Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio).

District of Columbia-Maryland Reunion Act: Would address the District of Columbia's long-standing grievance over lack of representation in Congress by turning over the district to Maryland except for a "National Capital Service Area" that includes the Capitol, the White House and monuments on the National Mall.

SPA Act: Would prohibit the operation of the House gym during a government shutdown. The Shutdown Prioritization Act was introduced during the 16-day federal government shutdown in October.

Who Wants a President Joe Biden?

Well Peter Beinart does.

Run, Joe, Run: Why Democrats Need a Biden Candidacy

If there's any suspense left about the Democratic primary in 2016, it largely revolves around whether an economic populist will challenge Clinton from the left. The prospect of Elizabeth Warren entering the race tantalizes many liberals. But since Biden's not an anti-Wall Street crusader, his potential candidacy sparks barely any interest at all. That's too bad. While a Warren candidacy would spark one valuable debate inside the Democratic Party-about government's role in the economy-a Biden candidacy would spark another: about America's role in the world.

But he worries that Biden's potential candidacy is in danger of becoming a joke.

:snort: Joe Biden's Candidacy 'In Danger' of Being Ridiculous.

OK, two comments. While Joe Biden's candidacy is, of course, already a joke - and, rest assured, he wants the job - it is a measure of just how much trouble the Democrats are in right now for 2016 that he and the other very-old-for-the-job person with public neurological issues (Hillary Clinton, for those following along at home) are the best choices that that party has. Although I suppose that Elizabeth Warren at least looks like a little better as a choice, seeing as she'd 'only' be 67 in 2016 and does not have blood clots or a family history of strokes.

.As far as I know.  Anyway, joke or not Joe Biden still has a remarkably non-trivial shot at winning the nomination.  Which would, as I have noted before, be absolutely great.

China Fact of the Day I

Before the Communists came to power in 1949, China had only 22 dams of any significant size. Now the country has more than half of the world's roughly 50,000 large dams, defined as having a height of at least 15 meters, or a storage capacity of more than three million cubic meters. Thus, China has completed, on average, at least one large dam per day since 1949. If dams of all sizes are counted, China's total surpasses 85,000.

China Fact of the Day II

Officially, the People's Republic of China is an atheist country but that is changing fast as many of its 1.3 billion citizens seek meaning and spiritual comfort that neither communism nor capitalism seem to have supplied.

Christian congregations in particular have skyrocketed since churches began reopening when Chairman Mao's death in 1976 signalled the end of the Cultural Revolution.

Less than four decades later, some believe China is now poised to become not just the world's number one economy but also its most numerous Christian nation.

Remembering the 8-Track and Why It Failed

WHEN eight-track tapes hit the shelves in the latter part of the Sixties, it was seen as a godsend.  All of a sudden, you could listen to your music collection in your car, or out-and-about with the new boom-boxes.  There were even rumors it would completely replace the vinyl record.  Yet, just over a decade later, the humble cassette tape was able to drive it to extinction.  Its heyday lasted from 1968-1975, and by 1980 the poor eight-track was in history's dustbin, a sort-of laughable derelict from the Seventies.

So what happened? Here are 8 reasons for its untimely demise.

Well not being able to rewind and being flimsy and unreliable were probably enough.

The primary reason the eight-track became extinct was because it was an unreliable piece of shit.  They simply weren't built to last and subsequently earned a reputation as being ticking time bombs.  Truth be told, brand new eight-tracks often sounded good, and the tapes themselves were virtually indestructible: they never melted in the sun or cracked.  It was the internal components that started to fall to pieces over time.  If the manufacturers hadn't opted for cheap construction, things might have turned out differently.

49 13th Warrior was actually pretty good. The book is based on a true story, but there are some critics who say the source material was bogus. Because it was bogus - there was a real Arab traveler with the name of Crichton's hero that Crichton took some details from, but the story itself is a complete fabrication. It is a really bad retelling of Beowulf, as a matter of fact, and easily spotted as a modern tale by anyone with some knowledge of early Medieval history and culture. "Vendel," for example, is the name of a archeological site in Sweden that has given its name to a pre-Viking culture that buried their kings there in the 700s.

91 I always thought that the bills that Congress votes on should read aloud in their entirety. And anyone who wants to vote on them, should be present for them. If you're not present for the entire reading, you don't get to vote. Should prevent people from claiming they didn't needed to pass a law to find out what was in it. The public would then also have a public hearing of every bill, and I bet you we'd also have a massive drop in the number of superfluous porky packages added to every new law- if for no other reason than Congress would find the readings tedious to sit through.

92 11 Evening morons. Re-post of a bleg earlier: Is gunbroker.com the place to go to buy guns and accessories? I can get almost anything through Gander Mountain but the prices are not what I would consider great. Posted by: Conservative Crank's iPhone at May 11, 2014 09:14 PM (R+XDI) I primarily search through slickguns.com for firearms, accessories, and ammo and cross-reference with gun-deals.com. Those are both user-provided deal sites and are pretty helpful. Just keep an eye on the comment sections regarding the deals and the vendors. Amazon often has reasonable prices on accessories. I've no experience with gunbroker or Gander Mountain.

In addition to my concern over a major surgery and recovery for him, he'll be out of work completely for 4 weeks and and half days for another 2 weeks after that. Which means I'll be taking over his responsibilities. Which is a bit daunting for that length of time. So, if you would be so kind, prayers mostly for my dad and his surgery/recovery. A few for me would be appreciated.

94 Brings to mind the scene where they swam through the caves to get to the evil mother. What spoilers? Go ahead and stream it. It's a fun movie. I meant that Crichton was quite deliberately retelling "Beowulf" - he and a friend were arguing about whether the poem was a boring story or whether it was a good story told really poorly. Crichton favored the latter view, and wrote the book to prove his point. The problem, apart from the fact that both of them were apparently unable to appreciate the original poem as anything but an adventure story, was that Crichton used the name of a real Arab traveler that left an account of Rus' (not necessarily Vikings!) and made it look like he was working off an original document. Basically, it is equivalent to writing a story about an "Abraham Lincoln" who wrote an account of fighting zombies during the 19th century and using quotes from the Gettyburg Address throughout the story to lend verisimilitude - there was a real Lincoln and a real Gettysburg Address, but story is a complete fiction.

No particular problem, there, of course. Except of the dozen or so people on the bus, half of those were blonde. Blonde Women. So he tells a couple of jokes, to a predictable response from the Blondes and a tepid, nervous response from the brunette females and all the males who also happened to be in that very enclosed space in the shuttle bus. The bus driver chuckles to himself and says "I'll be here all week!" From the back of the bus, I pipe up: "Well, we won't!" Biggest laugh line of the night.

Gunbroker is basically ebay for guns and guns stuff, with the exception that "sniping" doesn't work (because the auction won't close for fifteen minutes after the last bid) and that payments don't go through gunbroker at all - it is up to you to get the money, usually a money order, to the seller and negotiate the paperwork and regulations to get the gun to your location. Gunbroker just sets up the deal, the rest is up to the principle. They do have ways of resolving disputes, but I haven't had to deal with that. I have bought a gun and a couple sets of stripper clips off gunbroker, and am expecting another gun to arrive at the local FFL people sometime this week. I really haven't had any problems so far.

I don't know if you've noticed . . . . that the entire spectrum of intellectual and political diversity now resides entirely in the Republican Party. The Democratic Party is an intellectual/political monoculture. "The State is Mother, the State is Father" is the totality of the Democratic Party vision. I remember back when the Republicans were a monoculture (actually, they were a bi-culture, the conservatives and the country-club Republicans) while the Democrats weren't just a Big Tent, they were a Circus Tent. The Republicans are becoming the Circus Tent now, if for no other reason than the oh so "tolerant" Democrats are so fricking intolerant of any deviation from The Party Line. She and my brother are friends with a couple who own a company. Obamacare is a major problem for these people. They had good health insurance for their employees that was based on the company being self insured. Under Obamacare the employees will get worse insurance and it will cost the employer a lot more money than the better insurance that they currently provide. When I said something to my sister in law about the employer mandate being delayed until 2016, she said, "Well, don't you think that if a Republican gets elected they will do away with Obamacare?" I almost fell over. This is one of the most liberal people I know and she sounds like she wants a republican to get elected so that Obamacare can be dissolved.

188 The problem with 8 tracks, is that they were endless loops. As the tape played, the tape was pulled out of the center of the 'pancake'. Not something that led to reliability. Very similar 'carts' were used by radio stations for years for commercial spots.

As an aside, the first cassettes were not 'compact cassettes' as most came to know them, but these

When I first started in radio, I was surprised to learn that commercials (and sometimes music) were recorded onto cartridges that were a lot like 8 tracks. They were just two tracks, and had a cue tone reader that stopped the tape back at the beginning. Like 8-tracks, they could be very unreliable, depending on the manufacturer. I haven't seen one of those cartridges in over 10 years. One more thing for you praying people...could you please send up one for my hometown in the Texas Panhandle? Muldoon at May 11, 2014 11:37 PM (MKpBT) Declare dissent a hate crime and declare that "hate speech" is not "free speech" like what they have in Canada, Australia, and the UK. Frankly, they have already moved onto transvestitism and declaring that "gender is a social construct." Legally, one's biological sex and one's gender are different things. The Left have declared that biological sex is just a matter of a few superficial differences and thus irrational to treat them differently, much like treating someone different because they were tall compared to someone who wasn't. This abolition of "gender" is at the same stage that gay marriage was at less than 15 years ago. The Left is 90% of the way of winning that battle too. The real question is what comes after that? "Classism," "Ageism," and "Ableism" are already touted by the Left (all tied together with racism, sexism, homophobia, &c. according to the idea of "kyriarchy"), so they might push one of those, or more likey go after ephebophilia/hebophiliaÂ… they already have the basis for that laid down anyway.

If people feel the urge to write over the top humorous reviews and such go for it.  Though I promise I won't attend any book signings for it.  If I win the Hugo somehow, they will be left holding the award.  But if a major motion picture deal happens, I guess at least a round or two at Vegas would be in order.  However, bail is not an option.

361 What we all need to realize is that the gay mafia have won and we can but fight from a defensible line. The right to not be compelled to express a belief, behavior, or even you disagree with as a condition of employment should be the focus regarding "gay rights." SSM and all the rest have largely been won at this time. Protecting ourselves from persecution is the only thing we can do at the moment. We must fight for that before it becomes impossible to do so (which is happening quite rapidly). Also, we need to make sure that people are not punished for refusing to refer to a person by a pronoun that is contrary tot heir biological sex. It is the only thing we can do to protect a remnant during the dark timesÂ…

371 190 When I first started in radio, I was surprised to learn that commercials (and sometimes music) were recorded onto cartridges that were a lot like 8 tracks. They were just two tracks, and had a cue tone reader that stopped the tape back at the beginning. Like 8-tracks, they could be very unreliable, depending on the manufacturer. I haven't seen one of those cartridges in over 10 years.

You haven't lived until you've waited for a VAX-11/730 to load its microcode from a cartridge tape at 19.2 kilobaud.

381 Somehow the Dorcas in the Bible doesn't remind me much of Dorcus Blimlime: At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitah, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord. Acts 9:36-42, NKJV

402 And of course it doesn't matter to gay militants if getting people fired probably does nothing to change attitudes about gay marriage. People just have to be punished for an non politically correct opinion and punished strongly. Before the gay marriage kerfuffle I "met" gays on he internet who insisted that Christians should be put in concentration camps so as not to infect the rest of society, so evidently some of them are not taking the MLK approach to marching through streets and having water hoses turned on them. The saddest thing was when I talked to a gay surgeon from TX. He was obviously an intelligent well off man. He insisted that he would run Christians down if he thought he could get away with it. Some Christians behave badly to gays (and you can, of course behave quite lovingly even if you think marriage is a term that should be b/t a man a woman and support civil unions for everyone) but I often wonder the level of rage that this Dr. had would entirely consume him one day.

403 I meant that Crichton was quite deliberately retelling "Beowulf" - he and a friend were arguing about whether the poem was a boring story or whether it was a good story told really poorly. Crichton favored the latter view, and wrote the book to prove his point.

Posted by: Grey Fox at May 11, 2014 10:00 PM (tCyq3)

I don't think he was re-telling it as much as re-imagining it as if it might have been true.  I have read Beowulf in several translations, and find Crichton's version to be a plausible and enjoyable alternative.  For straight translations, however, Heaney is the best.
