Thank God it's Friday!!
Well, well. Ray Nagin is in the news again. It would seem he and about 60 other of his friends took offense of man who put up a sign of Obama In Diapers in front of his house.
A group of about 60 people protested outside a New Orleans home where a man mounted a sign depicting President Barack Obama in a diaper. The protesters, who included former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, gathered outside Timmy Riley's Calhoun Street home Wednesday to demand the removal of the sign, which they said is disrespectful to Obama and African-Americans in general, WDSU-TV, New Orleans, reported Thursday.
Um, how is it disrespectful to African-Americans? Maybe to Obama himself but not ALL African-Americans. If a black man held a sign up making fun of Bush, was that making fun of all white people? Give me a friggin' break.
"We see it every day. It's a monstrosity, and I can't believe somebody would put it up. But (Riley has) the right to do that, unfortunately," neighbor Veronica Lyons said.
Yeah. Unfortunate that a fellow American has the right to free speech.
You guys ready for some honey badger? No? Well honey badger doesn't give a f$#*.
A Question
So, um, 'ettes. After reading this article on Women Saving Money For Purses, just how much do you have stashed away for this type of stuff? Or is that Top Secret?
A British building society said its research of 1,000 women found one in 10 have an average $135 hidden away in "handbag funds. The society said some women also hide funds for shoes, vacations and plastic surgery, while one in five men have money saved for gadgets, games and clothes.
I call BS on the guy stuff. Beer isn't on the list.

Where Some Foreign Aid Ends Up

I'm not surprised that millions of dollars ended up in the pockets of the son of an African Head of State to further his playboy lifestyle.
Eleven supercars worth up to £5 million have been seized from outside an African dictators Paris mansion as part of a foreign aid money-laundering investigation. The vehicles, which included two Bugatti Veyrons, a Ferrari 599 GTO and a Maserati MC12 are all registered to Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the president of Equatorial Guinea.
He is one of numerous African heads of state who regularly receive vast handouts in foreign aid including British cash via European funding.

"Yes," replied Teodoro
Akira points proudly to his chest: "Ten percent!"
Much later, Akira visits Teodoro at his palatial home in Africa, and marvels at its splendor. Overcoming his cultural inhibitions, he blurts: "what an amazing house! How did you ever afford it?"
Teodoro draws him to a window and points into the jungle: "Do you see that freeway?"
Akira strains and squints, and finally gives up: "No."
Teodoro proudly points to his own chest: "One hundred percent!"
There are those who say this explains why Japan works, and Africa does not.

In honor of SCOAMF I will be droppin my g's tonight. My family went to a restaurant called Ye Olde Pub. It is unabashidly conservative. There is a sign that says, "this is a conservative restaurant but we will serve liberals." Pictures of Reagan adorn the walls. Also, pics of the rest of presidents, though I didn't look to see if SCOAMF's was up. One area has the names of the victims of 9-11 under a glass plate. When you see that many names in one place you are reminded what a heinous act it was. Pics of firemen and W, pics of soldiers, sailors and all the branches of the service were right behind our table. Get this, the owner came out and asked if we would mind givin our opinion to an AP reporter regardin the current crop of Republican candidates. My wife and I said, right now, Cain with Newt as VP would be our choice. His name was Dan Sewell. The chow was good. We went across to a halloween store, to walk off some of the beer and food. While we were there we ran into a friend, one of Boehner's Staffers and his family. It was a nice night.

The thing is, most liberals would refuse to eat there. They're tolerant of other ideas, just as long as you don't disagree with them afterall. And this place would be a sort of example why airports could never show Fox News on the TVs.

Pork loin. They come in a kind of cylindrical shape and are very tender after they are cooked. Kroger sells loins plain or seasoned.

chemjeff, pork is a bit tricky, because the pricier cuts can be very dry. A good pork roast is rolled and tied and has fat around it. I don't know, but I suspect the "pork sirloin" is a very lean cut of meat. You don't want that. I've dined with poor folks who buy a pork shoulder or pork butt and they are amazing. And cheap. But for a good pork roast, go to a good butcher (or Whole Foods) and pay the money. Then be careful cooking it, so it doesn't dry out.

so I was at the store and I was going to try out the pork roast recipe that Genetic Tunder posted here, but I couldn't find pork roast in the meat section. There was pork sirloin roast, is that the same thing? I wasn't quite sure.
Well, you're cooking overnight, so that means you want cuts that are reasonably tough and full of flavor. With beef, your cut selection matters a lot more, because you get huge flavor dividends and good price advantage for accepting the slow-cooking stuff. For pork, it matters less. Shoulder and loin are both fine. For this cooking method, I might slightly favor shoulder (also, weirdly, known as "Boston Butt") because of a little extra flavor and connective-type tissue to gelatinize the sauce, but it's hard to go wrong. Crockpotting is the most forgiving of cooking methods, except with really delicate stuff like fish or chicken breast.
Posted by: Splunge at September 30, 2011 05:59 PM (2IW5Q)
so what kind of meat should I get for Genetic Tunder's recipe?
Pork sirloin roast? or pork loin? or ask the butcher for something else?

Yes, that's the old-school answer, and still mostly a workable formula if you're sticking with beef. But pork is more ambiguous, and it has special cases like pork belly, and with chicken, the stew-friendly wing is approaching the price of the quick-cooking breast, thanks to hot wings.
The more people catch on to the merits of the slow-cooking cuts, the more the traditional price formula, set in the "housewife convenience is everything" early-60's era, is upheaved. We're in a more foodie era now, and the trend is for the good stuff to get expensive, however long it takes to cook.

RF's cooking tip of the year.
1. large tenderloin.
2. large knife
3, jimmy dean or bacon,
4. polk hole in tenderloin with knife from one end to the other.
5. fill the center full of Jimmy Dean or bacon.
be sure to freeze the sutffing so you can shove it into the pork.
6. cook until done
7. enjoy.

Peaches - here's the twist to my week and it happened today.
I have been in meetings all week and was at a conference today and then decided out of the blue to stop by a Mexican restaurant off PCH and was relaxing and eating in my car just chilling out for a minute when I noticed an elderly woman who had been nodding off in her car parked in the next parking space over. She appeared to be dressed well and had a nicer looking car, but I could just tell something was off and kept thinking about it and then it dawned on me. This woman was living out of her car in one of the nicest areas in Southern California.
I started to look closer at her car and what was in it. She had dry cleaning hanging on a hook, a few pieces of clothes, a prescription pill container on the dash, a few pieces of loose mail and a some small boxes.
I decided to back out and then suddenly stopped. Pulled forward and got out of my car. And walked over to this car next to me.
I knocked lightly on the window and startled this elderly woman and she was ticked off a little but I said, I want to talk to you.
I asked her if she was alright... and she lowered her window and looked me straight in the eye and said, son, I'm homeless.
She looked about 70 years old and she was dressed like a grandmotherly lady.
My heart sank when I saw a photo of her taped to the dashboard of her and her husband in younger and better times, smiling.
I spoke with her for abut 15 to 20 minutes and gave her 65 dollars and a cherised prayer card I had in my wallet. I told her never to give up hope and that somehow she will figure this out and her eyes welled up.
She told me she had been evicted from her home.
I am going to figure things out for her.
I told her that times are very tough for many and that this world is upside down right now but faith is going to get us through.
I was then beyond angered driving home thinking about the abject waste of taxpayer funds just on Solyndra alone and how Obama has worsened things.
That's my story. It's sad but I feel so blessed to actually have met this person today, I know it doesn't make sense but I do feel blessed about the whole experience.

Power adapters are not the whole power system. The little round hole you plug it into is a small internal unit on the laptop. I've replaced several of those on IBM Lenovos that were defective. After going thru as many adapters as you have, I wouldn't expect they all would be bad.
There are so many things that could be causing the problem. I've seen bad keyboards present as power problems. You really need to take it into a repair guy...probably cheaper to get a new one.

chique d'afrique, I would take the oem battery to batteries plus or battery barn or someplace like that and have it checked. Most of these places do it for free.
If the battery is shot, it doesnt make one bit difference what kind of adapter you are using. And they might even have a replacement that is the same or lesser cost than online. Might be worth a try.

And if they are going to fly from land, a VTOL aircraft is a great idea...until you realize you have to refuel and rearm it, so it's stupid not to operate from an airbase (how do you get the bomb jammer out in the forest?). Duh!
OK, the light, expeditionary Marines need fighters for heavy firepower but why can't they use the other services? jake and Peaches and everyone else is telling you the truth... pork loin is a better cut of pork, and there are far better ways to cook it.
All I am saying is that it sounds to me like you are a bit of a novice, who is not yet ready to braise, oven roast, etc, and that a porkloin in the crockpot is gonna be heavenly. I also know form experience that they don't always have a lot of pork options in certain areas of the country.
Don't cheap out on the beer, though, or it'll be bitter. I definitely recommend the Dos Equis Amber.

Get 1 to 1 1/2 half pound of petite sirlon beef steaks.
pre-heat the oven on Broil for 15 minutes.
set the oven rack 2nd from the top.
place beef steaks on broiler pan.
place in oven and flip the steaks after 6 minutes.
(cook 6 minutes per side)
after the 12 minutes remove from oven and place a pat of butter ontop of each steak
salt and pepper to taste.
serve and enjoy!
Crock pot recipes may be transmitted to novices. Other stuff is harder. If I did what you describe, I'd have shoe leather. Not saying it doesn't work with your beef and your broiler and your doneness preferences. But I just broiled some 2" steaks, 3 minutes on a side, and they were perfect for me. You have to experiment with your equipment and ingredients. Or learn how to poke a steak with your finger and decide how done it is.

Wait, okay, I think I got it. Just did a google image search on broiler pan. It seems to two layers: top layer has slits, bottom layer is solid, so juices can drip down. Presumably this broiler flame is overhead.

"Oven Rack" - those things like a gridiron that fit onto slots in your oven
"Broiler Pan" - a black enameled pan that comes with most ovens. It has two parts, an upper part with holes for fat to drain into, and a lower part, to catch the fat. The whole point is to get the fat to drain out of the direct heat of the broiler, so it doesn't spatter, catch fire, etc.

The whole reason the v/stol was created in the first place.
The roots of the Harrier lie in the mid-1950's, a time when the possibility of vertical take-off, fixed-wing aircraft had begun to be investigated in several countries. Airframe and engine designers were stimulated by the growing military awareness of the vulnerability of large air bases to tactical nuclear weapons, while the opportunity to operate civil airliners from the centre of cities provided a further impetus. Most importantly, the rapid progress in engine and airframe technology finally made such aircraft appear truly practicable

cj, that stuff blows. You buy the real garlic (if you don't need much, just pull off a couple of cloves, they charge by the pound), peel it (very easy, cut off the end of the fat end and nudge the rest off with your knife tip), then smash it with the flat side of a big fat knife. The shit in the jars is execrable.
Or, try this, buy a whole garlic dealie, stick it in the oven for however long (look it up), then you squeeze the little cloves out onto bread and you will think you died and went to heaven.
P.S. Putting a pork tenderloin in a crockpot is a huge waste. You could probably put your old running shoes in the crockpot and they would taste good with the right spices. If you're crockpotting it, but the cheapest meat you can find (but not that "day old" stuff . . . ever).

There are a number of people out there on Teh Intertubes posting under the handle "Jeff B." But thankfully only on on AoSHQ. So that guy ain't me, whoever it is.
You know, the funny thing about Breitbart's ongoing "I want to poach the AoSHQ commentariat" thing is that he'll never be able to so long as the caliber of blogger he hosts is on the level of John Nolte. We demand a certain level of hobo-defiling INTELLIGENCE (perhaps it might called "cunning") around here....that shit's wildly absent in most places.
I can think of maybe two or three blogs with comment sections that really impress me in terms of the quality of commenters, funny running schticks, worthwhile serious posters, etc. The interesting thing is that, while they all lean semi-right, they're not ideologically homogeneous at all: Ace of Spades HQ, Althouse, and McArdle's blog over on the Atlantic. Whatever you think of the bloggers themselves, those comment sections are fuckin' GOLD.
Hot Air is the polar opposite, of course.

I really wish Herman Cain:
1.) Had ever held elected office before. Even Congressman, which normally wouldn't be enough for me, but might be enough for him.
2.) Hadn't said that unforgivably ignorant crap about mosques that indicated a complete lack of familiarity with the Constitution and the 1st Amendment (and which was subsequently embraced by a depressing number of drive-by idiots who dropped their shit on this blog).
3.) Because I like the everliving FUCK out of the guy on a gut level. I don't think he's qualified for the Presidency, and nothing he'll ever say or do during this electoral season will ever change my mind about that (though yeah, I'll happily pull the lever should he win the nomination), but man...he must be one of the most instinctively likeable fucking dudes we've had in national GOP politics in years.
4.) I remember when he ran for the Georgia Senate seat that Johnny Issakson ended up winning in 2004. Ironically enough, given current events, he was apparently considered the quasi-moderate in that race, but I remember I was rooting for him even back then (and was pleased that he at least made a very strong showing in the primary despite losing). Just wish he'd actually won.

I would just say. Don't underestimate the mettle and talents of a shrewd businessman who has managed people, dealt with a board, shareholders, a P&L statement and was responsible for the bottom line.
That's Herman Cain, and that's what built America. Not theoretical idealists enamored with graft and governmental structure.

CURL: Cains 9-9-9 tax plan is fairer share
its possible to quantify what his plan would bring in. A flat income tax of 9 percent would bring in about $1.12 trillion. Corporate taxes at 9 percent about $270 billion. A national 9 percent sales tax, about $378 billion.

1.) It's completely impossible from a practical political perspective. Let's face it: you ain't gonna overhaul the tax code LIKE THAT in one go. Think about how much fun the Democrats would have with the whole "Republicans want to make the poor pay a shitton of taxes that they previously never had to!" angle. Whatever (intellectually justifiable) arguments you might have against the American system of progressive taxation, it's pretty much here to stay absent a complete collapse/destruction-via-fire of the United States, with a political reorganization to follow.
2.) Even IF it were somehow able to be implemented, there's absolutely no guarantee that 9-9-9 wouldn't be subsequently altered to 10-10-10 or 12-12-12 or whatever by later Congresses. It can't be frozen where it is.

its possible to quantify what his plan would bring in. A flat income tax of 9 percent would bring in about $1.12 trillion. Corporate taxes at 9 percent about $270 billion. A national 9 percent sales tax, about $378 billion.

CJ you need to GET A CROCKPOT!!!!!!
even Grim can cook in a crockpot.
my rule is three small potatos cut up. two stalks of celery, two or three carrots depending on how much you like em (might want less carrot more potato) half large onion or whole smallish one.
then put whatever meat you like in there.
a couple dashes of lee and Perrins
a bay leaf or two
and two tablespoons of ketchup. cover with beef stock or a can of progresso beef pot roast soup (rich and hearty) and a beer.
the pot roast soup will season your meal and make it foolproof.
cook time can be all day while you are at work, on low.

Plys the round-a-bout of Catalina and the highlight is 3 or 4 German fighters (reps out of Long Beach) attacking the ship with general quarters and total rampage of the 40mm boffers, fore and aft 5 inch , 50 cal and the like(rigged with the FX propane/oxy mixes for live fire but still just as loud. I think she's very beautiful!
And yea, the Carter thing is sucky, but she is from the same general area, and people get protective of their own.
She's a sweet lady, funny as hell, and has overcome a lot. We have mutual acquaintances. I have met her, and she's awesome. But if she drives you crazy on TV, you will just die, she is the same in real life. Ne plus ultra Southern.
And her man is quiet as a mouse. Remolds me so much of my uncle RC.
Her boys are gorgeous; so gorgeous, I'd swear they were teh gay. Specially Jamie.

Shame,
You would be proud of how well they have kept this historic ship...shape!
Main famous page for this vessel is how they took 7008 Koreans out of harms way at the outbreak of the Korean War back in the 50's. Ships Boson's rigged 2 dozen "port-a-potty's that hung over the aft railings(100+ feet off the water-line can you imagine!!) since the ship only had heads for the 60+ crew. The captian had to make sure the ship was WELL into the wind most the way back if you catch my drift...

Fast and Furious developments.
That's weird. The White House voluntarily released some documents, including emails between that skull-face Bill Newell and his buddy Kevin O'Reilly (who is now conveniently despatched to Iraq and so can't testify to Issa's committee).
Among the documents produced: an email in which ATF's Newell sent the White House's O'Reilly an "arrow chart reflecting the ultimate destination of firearms we intercepted and/or where the guns ended up." The chart shows arrows leading from Arizona to destinations all over Mexico.
Ohhhhkayy. Those MUST have been guns picked up at crime scenes. How in hell do you spin that? I'm curious as to why the WH would release this, unless Newell and O'Reilly are about to go under the bus.

Harvested a few more comments from the North Korean guitar slaves:
Keep smiling you expendable turds! - Kim Jong Il
I don't know why they couldn't get them properly sized guitars
And guess what if one of 'em botches their part. INSTANTANEOUS DEATH
These 5 kids will rule the world in a few years, mark my words...

Which one, the smart car or the bike? Both of them look to weigh about the same. The smart car would be easier to heat in the winter though. But if you got a Gold Wing they have heaters...no bullshit.

If the Norks could get hold of one they'd probably stuff in about 32.

Ya know how lefty idiots are always saying we need a Department of Peace?
What we really need is a Department of Pure Blackened Evil.
We could put you in charge.
Your mission would be to just think up evil shit that could possibly happen. Not to plan against it, just plan it and let others figure out how to counter it. You'd wake up and think, "What am I going to destroy and how many people will I hypothetically kill today?"

Or a smart phone?
My computer is dumb as a sack of hammers. It requires a degree of specificity that's just ridiculous.
Like when I want some porn, I want something that will turn me on. But it doesn't know what I want, it can't think for itself. So I just wind up browsing for hours on end until something ops up that catches my eye.
Shit's not smart. It's not even clever. It's maybe a little less dumb, but that's as far as I'm willing to go.
But I guess iPhones wouldn't sell as well if they were called less dumb phones.
Well, let the buyer beware, I always say.

Look, a map that shows a bunch of arrows going from Arizona to Mexico indicating gun movement is WACK. And they release it, like "Here you go." Isn't that the very diagram of a murderfest? God only knows what they're holding back.

you do realize that besides embroidery and picking gross stuff out of wounds that is my Special Talent? i positively keep myself up at night because i can and do think of such things.
and its horrible.
till recently it was just something i thought of as fodder for possible thriller novels. Not yeah, this could really happen, if bad people were in the right places, stuff...
I would throw out ideas for stories till Grim told me to STOP. ANd i cant even speak of it to him, because it makes his skin crawl and i guess things that people really shouldnt know about how to do bad that way... I had always hoped i'd write creepy books, and make a bunch of money. Then I realized they would read like recipes for trouble and how to do it really really well, and chucked that idea, and have been looking for ways to put the monsters in my head to work ever since.

How mad do you think the Mexicans will get over Gunwalker? The next administration is going to have to sit down with them and convince them this was a rogue administration. We'll have to promise to prosecute every gunwalker criminal we can get our hands on to prevent the Mexicans from coming up here and grabbing them themselves. We may have to toss them a few suspects to get them to cooperate with us on everything else, like anti-terror programs. I wonder if they'd get so mad they'd put out an arrest warrant on Obama.
