— Open Blog Nothing brings people together like music. Particularly if youre in a mosh pit or attempting a stage dive. Except when you stage dive into a too thin crowd. Then you get together with a concrete floor.
Neither of the links below are exactly new. Please, though, whatever you do dont get into a flame war over your differences in musical tastes. For example: Dont say anything like The entire membership of Styx should be bound and gagged, then placed in a steel cage enclosure with 100 starving wolverines. Because that would simply be wrong. Wolverines don't deserve that sort of cruelty.
First link is to Spinner which has a number of categories such as Worst Lyrics Ever, Hooker Songs, Rockin Gay Moments, but you get the idea. Wouldve been a lot better if theyd invited the staff of Cracked.com over.
Second link is to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fames list of 500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll. Some of these are real head-scratchers. And what about the omissions? Assholes left out the Bay City Rollers. Hell, without BCR do you think Lynyrd Skynyrd wouldve ever been formed?

As usual with the overnight thread, every single topic is off topic, including topics.

Yep. Those are some finely toned arms. Last time I saw anything that hhhawwt was back in '92 when CNN was running repeated stories about Hillary's finely toned calves and ankles. I probably worked my way through 3 boxes of tissues during the first month she and Bill were in the White House.

Any lyrics by Stevie Nicks would have to be in the "worst" category. She was very nice to look at and I liked the tunes, but the words were gibberish.

DYK that Sarah was an original member of the Go-Go's? It's true. At the time, there were some pretty crazy stories about why she left the group. Anonymous roadies claimed that she embarrassed the other members by asking what the letters "MTV" stood for, and wondering aloud whether the upcoming North American tour would include Russia.
These claims were false, however, and it's now widely known that the other members wanted Teh Sarah out because they were jealous of her.

You guys are just too tough. Personally I like Styx and I have most of their early records. I also have that Julie Andrews record pictured in the original post.
But then again I like almost all music. Key in that word music. Performing arteeestss have lately forgotten that music requires a melody. I have no rock in my collection newer than 1988 with Dire Straights.
But I love almost all music. The only types of music I do not like are hip hop and opera. I dont care for the new country but its not an active dislike as in I hate commies dislike. As for what passes as the new rock, it is not music so there is nothing there to dislike.
I am currently working on a project to digitize all of my old vinyl albums. I currently have about 1000 albums in my media player library and adding about 5 to 10 per day.
And that includes 6 albums by Styx, including their best Paradise Theatre.

don't be a musical Luddite
I guess that is what I am, but I dont go around destroying the musical looms. I just dont like any of the new stuff.
I used to turn on MTV every now and then to see what was the new stuff and if any new artists were around that I might like. But then MTV turned into black TV and the hip-hop channel and when their ratings went into the toilet they just quit playing music all together.
Never did find any new artists that I liked. I depend on my daughter for that I guess. She will bring over CDs every now and then for me to rip and put on her MP3 player. So far almost all of it is trash except the new country and that may not be trash but it is close.

I have gone over the first page of this list and like all of these lists it has some really strange choices for songs that shaped rock and roll. Two that come right to the top are Louis Armstrong and Johnny Cash.
Dont get me wrong, both of these were outstanding performers and they did shape their particular genre of music. But rock and roll???? Perhaps it would help if they posted the criteria that were used to shape the list before they posted the actual list.
ps
I didn't see Nike shoes are lace wigs anywhere in the list.

I follow a few artists, and depend on radio to find new music- I just can't listen to the same old classic rock all the time. I mean, I need new stuff. I'm thankful for Amazon MP3 downloading so I don't have to buy a CD to get one or two songs I like.
And I gave up on country music years ago, except for one or two artists. I was watching a country awards show, and Big n Rich came out with midgets in tophats, rappers, shooting off confetti cannons. That did it for me. Country music had become a caricature of itself.

I had never heard of Japanese enka before AOS so the answer is no. I never made it to Japan out of all of those Westpac tours because we were not allowed to pull into Japan.
But that doesnt mean I dislike it either.

For people talking about worst lyrics - GO. AND. FIND. JAZZMATAZZ by Guru. In '93 this former Gang Starr "member" released a Jazz-rap fusion album that was considered "ground-breaking" and "revolutionary". Now, at the time I still loved rap, but was just about finished with the whole misguided enterprise. Listening to the lyrics of Jazzmatazz finally put an end to the dumb rap fetish. A writer that can put an end to an entire genre of music for a person must really suck donkey balls. (and no, I never dressed like a douchebag hip-hop, triple fat goose shit-head!)
Jazzmatazz has to be the absolutely dumbest fuckin' set of rhymes ever - just plain dumb. Dumbest lyrics is really saying something when talking about rap lyrics of ANY era. Rap as a lyrical vehicle is the single largest collection of idiotic bullshit you could hope to find in the history of music. Now, as an adult, I can't understand why the industry isn't a national embarrassment to America and a cultural embarrassment for black people. Shit! Even Obama demanded young people pull their fuckin' pants up! That's the President basically saying - hey dick-hole, you look like an absolute tool waddling across the intersection holding your 52 inch waist pants by the crotch.
Nevermind that I still have hundreds of CASSETTES from '83-'91 that I'm NEVER throwing away.
"Yo, Marley gives the slice, I get nice,
and my voice is twice as horrifying as Vincent Price
goes deep, till you fell in a spell of a sleep,
and while I'm countin' the money, you count sheep."

I also have hundreds of cassettes and I have digitized them but I am not splitting out the songs on most of them because the audio quality on them sucks. I never understood why cassettes beat out 8 Track because unless you used an exotic media on the cassette and recorded it in real time it sounded like shit.

It is as if they have never actually listened to any of those songs. They took the listing of 500 songs that "our" surveys have shown that people want to hear.
A list that doesn't include "Blitzkrieg Bop" is invalid.
I'm surprised they didn't list 'Stairway to Heaven" as the greatest song evah, right next to the "Milkshake Song".

I'm surprised they didn't list 'Stairway to Heaven" as the greatest song evah, right next to the "Milkshake Song".
The stated intent was to include the songs that had the most influence on rock and roll. As I said earlier they should publish their selection criteria.
My feeling is that there are not that many artists that had major influence on the development of rock and roll and they were all in the 50s. These were people like Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, etc. This list could be pared down to just a few.

How do you nominate someone for a Guinness World Record?
I think we should flood their offices with Obama nominations:
Most money charged in a 7 day period; Most illegal money collected in a Pres. campaign; Most lies told in a single speech; Most 'umms' in a single Press Conf.; Most stump speeches made by a Pres. after he is elected.
This could be really fun!

People talking about the worst albums of all time reminded me of this one:
My wife loves it and, although it may not actually be the worst album of all time, I cant stand it. We were having a party out at the pool many years ago and she was playing that disk. A friend of mine from work said he loved it so I took it out of the machine and gave it to him.
Several weeks later my wife asked about it and when she found out that I had given it away she went into overdrive pissed0ffedness.
LOL, she got in the car and drove downtown and bought another copy. Sometimes you just cant win.
and Manilow????? Maybe he would qualify as worst.

Who the fuck are the Jonas Brothers
Joe, the one who broke up with Taylor; Nick, the one who broke up with Miley so he could date Selena; and Kevin, the guy I get to sometimes dunk on my internet radio browser.
(Joe played Shane in Camp Rock, which also had Demi, who played Mitchie. Nick and Kevin were in it, too. Of course, Demi and Selena are good friends, so if Nick was up to anything behind Selena's back, like if he tried to get too close with Meaghan or Alyson, then he'd've been so busted, so there was no whay he was gonna do that.)
and why are they on my TV screen?
Because you're watching the Jonas Brothers, and you can't bring yourself to change the channel.
