I'm going to soon have a "Comment" feature for those headlines in the sidebar, so people can comment on a particular story that's not on the front page, if they like.

Until then, there's this.

For the same reason I never used to post these sorts of stories. There's something about having a big headline that goes out over the RSS feed that sort of promises more than a link and a one-liner, you know?

I just always think that if I have a post, given the headline-format of this blog, there has to be more to it than that, even if it's just an extended excerpt from the piece.

6 Ah, keeping the RSS feed clean. Well.

That reminds me, though -- it would be nice to have the headline stuff on a separate RSS feed, so we can look at it in other formats. I suppose this would sort of destroy the "get more links" aspect of it, though.

7 I just really like the option of throwing up a link and a one-liner without feeling that I'm drawing readers to a thin, content-free post under false premises.

Also... I just wanted that headlines thing for a long, long time. For a while I didn't think I wanted to try to serve the role as a first-read site, figuring it was too much work, but what the hell, if I have as many links as drudge over there every morning, why shouldn't people come here first?

I just have to get that dumb RSS accumulator working and I'll be all set.

8 A friend also pointed out that when there are too many links on the front page, which is what would happen if I tried putting all thee up on the main page, discussion and chatting get too fragmented.

I think it makes more sense to use the main page as a highlight, as in "this is my best guess as to what's most worth talking about, or most interesting, or most funny."

Agreed. Your judgment in this regard and your added content is key element of the blog and the reason you have such a loyal and involved readership. Kudos to you for not just throwing up links.

Unless of course you're throwing up links to the Digital Brownshirt. Then it's always good.

Two good things about Haloscan, it cuts down on anonymous and s pam comments.

What's with your filter? It's denying cn n. com and s-pam.

13 I think most of us read your blog because we enjoy finding out what you think. You are always worth reading: often informative, sometimes irritating, mostly funny, but always provocative. The head lines are only a means to start the discussion/debate. They are not totally irrelevant, but not really the main point either.

15 1. Google ads are targeted to get you to click them, so what better thing than infuriate your audience? Betcha some of ya clicked it just to see what it was...
