However... is this useful publicity at this stage in the campaign? Do you want to go after Obama's aunt politically?
As a matter of law, INS should do what they do. But do the GOP want to be tied to this.

In fact, Bush or McCain should make a show of granting her immigration amnesty after the election... Because it's not like her nephew has actually done shit for her.

So now the question is, did this sitting US senator know that his relative was in the country illegally and did he do anything to assist her in entering or staying in this country illegally?

Of course he knew. His campaign told her to shut up and not talk to the press until after the election.

If Barry's relying on that he's desperate, and deranged as well. The blue collar voters will crush him flat for this.

As far as public housing, Los Angeles County spends over one billion dollars on illegal immigrants. And that's before you factor in the cost of educating their children and incarcerating their criminals. Apparently the requirements for entitlement programs are no more stringent than they are for voting in our elections.

The woman is in this country illegally, living off the tax payers, many of whom have relatives who are WAITING to enter this country by the rules. If the McCain campaign decides that this woman and this issue are untouchable, as some of the commenters here suggest, I'm not sure we deserve to win.

not that she's here illegally... I mean it bothers me but not much...
not that she's collecting welfare... I mean it bothers me but not much...
not that she donated money to his campaign... I couldn't care less...
what bothers me is this rich SOB that went to Columbia and Harvard, does shit to help anyone in his family... not his aunt, not his brother, not his other brothers... he helps no one but the old white lady who's afraid of black guys...
if my family lived in shanty houses in Africa, I would be doing everything in my power to get them to America... or at least sending them a few bucks to help out.
you want my respect? respect your family!
or maybe he is helping and that's why she's here, in government housing, donating to his campaign?

Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.
Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.
Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.
Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.
[snip]
It was not immediately clear how Onyango might have qualified for public housing with a standing deportation order.

Yep, don't bag on the old lady, guys. Bag on Barky for a) not helping her financially and b) not helping her to become a legal resident.

I still hold to the theory that attacking Obama for not helping an extended family member is weak (Ed Morrissey agrees with me, fwiw), but definitely b.
IF Obama knew she wasn't a legal resident, he should have used some of his legal mojo to at least advise her on a path to said residency and put her in touch with people who could help her. I mean, this woman gave him $260 saved from her (ill gotten) welfare benefits... she was obviously supporting him.

Were you a live birth? No one will know about it if no one mentions it, you egregious dimwit. You can flog it to death without having one harsh thing to say about the Aunt. The are a dozen post in this. One, the aunt is illegal, the poor dear. Two, the poor aunt has to live in public housing while her rich Seantor nephew babbles about being his brother's keeper. Three, the poor little old lady is an illegal mostly because her rich, connected lawyer-Senator nephew didn't bother to straighten out her visa. Four, how did this poor little old lady god love her end up in public housing, though we're glad she's there , there are plenty of other little old lady's that aren't in public housing that should be. Did her rich well connected Senator lawyer nephew have any thing to do with that? Five, didn't Senator-lawyer realize that his poor aunt's donation was illegal as well. Isn't that he sort of thing we pay Senator-lawyer to know? And on and on and on. Like that. It's not hard. You just have to be not retarded

The only way I am aware of for someone here illegally to become regularized is for them to go back to where ever it is they're from and get in line. If your nephew is a wealthy US senator, that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, you'll probably find yourself in the front of the line.
But why would Obama do that? As his aunt's case illustrates, there is absolutely no penalty for violating our immigration laws. She even has taxpayer funded housing and a taxpayer funded "job." Given the way our immigration laws are enforced, why would anyone comply?
Are you starting to see why this is newsworthy?

But I don't see where talking about it is terribly helpful to the GOP's election chances in 3 days. Let the media talk about it.
Focus on the economic issues that Arnold nailed, or the Wright association that that 527 is going to do the $6,000,000 of advertising for, etc., and etc.

However, attacking Obama over this is something that others can do. Why was he letting her illegally redistribute her wealth to him, when he could have been helping her by getting her an immigration lawyer? Who from the campaign told her to keep quiet? Is he going to introduce an emergency private relief bill to give her a green card?
If you don't want to push this, then push BHO's creepy plan to use pre-teens to get votes. That's something that most people should find repellent, but almost no one else wants to push it.

Yes, that's a very charitable intepretation since he's probably just cheap, but it's within the realm of reason. Politically, I don't see Republicans attacking Obama on ties to his half-aunt being very helpful.
There are tons of more important things to attack Obama on, don't you think?

I have a feeling all of a sudden that this is going to get some play in the media. I think they suspect it will help Obama with poor people and working class people. See it as a way to bolster that early voting that isn't going so well. Problem is you don't run across many working class folk at Starbuck's. They're going to hate this, and despise Obama for it. .
Posted by: The Obvious at October 31, 2008 08:41 PM (1g+FW)
It does encapsulate his candidacy. A guy promising free shit with everyone ELSE's money and effort can't even get off his ass to keep his Aunt's immigration status straight, much less keep her from the projects. Instead, he takes illegal donations from her poverty to waste on Greek Temples and a half-hour dull-as-dirt vanity infomercial.
Who IS this guy? And why would you trust him to park your car, much less run the free world?

Of course I have much in common with fundamentalist Christians on those issues. We use different methods (although in addition to Biblical teachings they also use mine) of reaching the same conclusion.
And finally, as I mentioned there, I am a deist... like most of America's most influential founders. I believe in a God of some type or other, but don't know nor claim to know the details. I don't believe the Bible is revealed truth. Pretty classic deism stuff.
Specifically, I don't believe Jesus was supernatural. I think he may even be a myth: There's precious little reliable contemporary evidence about him and I would expect to be tons. The Romans were meticulous record keepers. I don't trust the Gospels as reliable accounts.
This hardly makes me any type of Christian including a "faux-Christian".
But if your criticism against me is I share some Christian values like being pro-life and opposed to racism and slavery, I'll wear that like a badge of honour. I agree with Christians on many things.

I'm just a spectator to your election (no. not Canada) but this strikes me as a hit on Obama.
His people had spoken to her and told her not to speak to the press. That shows he knew he knew her address and that she has lived in the US for many years.
So Obama must have known she had a bad result with immigration and was likely to be an illegal.
Although she is a fairly distant relative - I note she is a "step aunt", same father, different mother - he was obviously aware that she was living in the US illegally.
Isn't the first duty of the President to uphold the law?
You can't pick and choose which laws to uphold, can you?
I think THAT is the tack to take.
But maybe the immigration issue is different in the US. It would go down pretty badly here if a politician didn't act if they knew about an overstayer....
My 2 cents

1. The Obama campaign must have known she was here because she was informed she should not talk to the media until after the election.
2. They knew she was here and either was unaware she was here illegally (unlikely) or didn't care (more likely) or did care, but only about the news getting out (most likely)
3. They knew she was here and she was living in public housing while Barack was raking in millions from his best selling books.
4. They knew she was here and was not legally allowed to make campaign contributions to obama but they accepted them anyway.
If there were any real journalists left in America, they might want to ask some of the following questions in addition to the obvious "did he know" ones:
1. "Your aunt said she couldn't talk about you until after the election. Who told her that?" (removes the "we didn't know" response option)
2. "Since Barack said we should be our brother's keeper, why is his aunt living in a housing project when he's a multi millionaire? Isn't it hypocritical to ask others to pay higher taxes to 'spread the wealth' when Barack is unwilling to do it for his own aunt?"
3. "Has senator Obama ever intervened on his aunt's behalf with the INS? Why or why not?"
4. "Your campaign defended its lack of fraud control for online credit card donations by saying they would be caught later on during screening. Isn't the fact that an illegal alien was able to make multiple donations to your campaign proof that your screening either doesn't work or doesn't actually exist?"
Barack can't play the 'my aunt is a victim of the press' card. His aunt is the victim of his own opportunism and callousness. This is all about Obama and his whole neighborliness schtick being revealed as a big lie.

I think it will work The MSM is sitting on an enormous amount of Obama dirt. If they dump it all over the weekend, and McCain wins in a landslide, the story will be Obama was ahead until these last minute revelations turned the tide. I just don't think this story had legs in the next 3 days. What legs it has can be carried by the media, which has already begun to do so, while the GOP focuses on other targets.

Where did our country go? Now it makes sense why last year when ICE raided a factory in New Bedford Mass and deproted 300 people 4 politicians showed up to complain (only after ICE left town so they could not comment back) but when 900 US citizens got laid off one city over three months later none of them showed up to show support for actual US citizens.
I guess in Democrats minds it is getting tougher to fool Americans so they have to fool non citizens into voting for them. I guess when that wears out they will be registering aliens to vote, or have they already? ACORN on Mars?

Maybe we can be nice to his aunt (and The One too while were at it!) and wait until he's president of the United Socialist States of America. Then it will be really easy to rectify it all. We probably can meet with him unconditionally and ask him to please resign because he has obviously broken some laws of the former USA. I'm sure he'll have no problem with that, seeing as he's so much in love with our country and wouldn't want to change it or anything. Then we can make arrangements for me to keep paying higher taxes so that his aunt can live here illegally and take government subsidies. Win-win for all of us as far as I can see.

Does anyone at the FEC read a newspaper that prints articles from the AP wire?
The foreign press just reported that the Obama campaign accepts donations from illegal aliens in taxpayer-subsidized housing. You don't even have to mention the family angle--he's blithely breaking federal election laws.

An Associated Press story about poor people buying lottery tickets at cheque-cashing shops, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 25, 2003, quotes a Zeituni Onyango whom it describes as out of work and without much money. It's like when I feel luck might fall I do that, like manna might come from Heaven. Thats when I buy it, she told AP.

Agree with those above that say let the MSM/blogs push this out there and have McCain focus on other bigger issues like the economy and national security. This story encapsulates a whole bunch of negatives for Barry in 1 story - illegal relative, illegal donation, and illegal donations.
The ad I want to see McCain pound away at is O lowering his tax threshold line from 250K to 120K (120K said by O surrogate Richardson). I'll bet a good part of Barry's support is coming from people who don't recognize that his tax plan is a joke and that he is raising taxes if he gets in. Any candidate that the public believes will raise their taxes loses.

Look, John McCain is one of the most compassionate men who ever ran for office. he has even defended NObama when he felt the words against him were dangerous or unfair. If this poor woman will be in danger in Kenya, then I Know McCain would never want to see her get sent back. I would bet my life on that. But that is not the point, now. The point is Obama knew, its on the list of things that cant be discussed, he and Michelle have a long list! Unlike The McCains who just keep taking in on the chin. But I prefer that, cuz then we can make up our own minds whether or not something should be an issue. NObama's lies and constant deciet are just too dangerous...every couple of months another cohort pops up, and why are they always Militant or Terrorist, or anti Ameriican...and why is there always a link between them all? Or most all?
Rashid Khalidi PLO, (and Isreal and Jew hater) Khalod Al_Mansour anti American who got other muslims to pay for Obamas education, Jerimiah Wright, preaches hate and overthrow of America, Wm Ayers and wife Bernadine Dohrn, US terrorist, blew up Pentagon, US capital etc. Wrote book on it, and dedicatedit to all terrorist...inclusive of Serhan Serhan...murderer of Bobby Kennedy! They do not repent even now..they say they wish they did more! Tony Rezko...convicted crook, who just happened to buy property ajoining Obamas on the same day, and cut him a deal! Louis Ferrakkan, Black Supremasist who calls BHO..."The Messiah"!...they all live in same neighborhood all multi millionaires now....hummm. I guess its ok not to have to share the wealth til you get all you want, eh boys? And BHO has lied about every single one of them! Incapable of telling the truth! Stop the insanity people...please Vote For John McCain! Will he make mistakes? Sure, we are all human. But we KNOW he loves our country, and would fight to the death for it. He has already proved that. McCain 08!

This is it this all you can come up with? Republicans can't win it on the issues, can't win it by presenting the qualifications of their candidates. So let's dig up some of Obama's extended family; you know the side of the family that he has little to no contact with and make him personally responsible for their living conditions, their moral failings and every decision they personally make.
So that being the case, I guess McCain should be held responsible for his wife's drug addiction and her theft of drugs from AVMT.
Weak, just weak.

Howard, add to that list:
Didn't realize he'd hired someone who would burn his family.
That's what's happening here. Someone high up in the Obama campaign has had this information for months. The story was pushed just in time that it would evolve a certain appearance on Election Day.
Obama should be mightily pissed at whoever of his employees did this to his aunt.
Posted by: Dishman at November 01, 2008 01:14 PM (I4py7)
I myself am from the Caribbean and as a U.S. Virgin Islander by the definition used by the US Department of Labor am an immigrant. What Barack Obama should have done as someone with relatives that he knows overseas is to foster community economic development in the other country not encourage illegal immigration and and or ignore the condition of relatives. The case of Zeituni Onyango shows that Senator Barack Obama is the sort of person who causes the problem of illegal immigration. First he has done little to finance economic development in his father's family's community second he countenances violation of American immigration law.
Were I in Barack Obama's situation, rich by American standards and extremely rich by Kenyan standards with relatives there who I knew I would have financed family farm improvement and business and real estate ownership by relatives in Nairobi. I would try to also assist the community where they are living in general. I am aware I have relatives in the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. I have relatively little income now but in July of 2004 and though I have neither Barack Obama's money or his contacts I was responsible for successfully petitioning Harvard to give 600 beds to the Dominican Consulate for flooded clinics in the aftermath of a hurricane. I am now currently communicating with the Mexican government lobbying for a small enterprise finance program. I am not now nor would I attempt to bring in relatives in contravention of U.S. law.
Zeituni Onyango's case has been adjudicated and she can not be given a stay of execution of deportation without the appearance of partiality. Were she to obttain an exemption every other illegal alien with a deportation order could rightfully claim favoritism. It might be possible for Aunt Zeituni to find have elswhere than Kenya but she should not be able to remain here. She is taking advantage of a situation but it is being caused by American politicians. As a result I am discussing possibly demonstrating not in South Boston but at the Obama Biden Campaign Headquarters in Boston before election. I have also previously protested with NumbersUSA material on the Kennedy Compound property several times, twice while the Kennedy family was there.

1. Racism charges in 3..2..1
2. McCain is not exactly the poster child for solving the illegal problem in a responsible way...and Palin's one answer on this has probably painted her into Mac's corner, as well.
2A. Because of this, it's likely that the press gets Mac and/or Palin to say we need to figure out a way to let her and others like her stay. Frankly, I'm not eager for that to be looped 24/7 on every news outlet.
3. Racism charges in 3..2..1
4. If you ask the legitimate question about if she would receive a "tax break" from The One, see #1 and #3.
5. There
In short, there is no high-road for McCain...he must avoid the question at all costs...not exactly the high road. Unfortunately, because of his stance on illegals, he'll be saying something completely stupid like #26 pointed out. So, if a real conservative was running, we'd have a legitimate issue to use gently. Instead, we get to lament that this manna from heaven is unusable.
The only possible question McCain might raise...If this lady was able to contribute illegally several times, what does that say about The One's fundraising from these "millions and millions of small donors."?

Yea, I'm scared shitless by this. I've worked through several layers of implications and they look really, really bad. I believe this is an example of the astroturfing technique (ala Canadian HRC) by which "fairness" might be imposed on bloggers.
Read my follow-up (#166). I believe this could be used as an angle to shred the Obama camp.
This bears all the same hallmarks as the Palin smears, which we know now originated from Axelrod.

May I humbly pose a simple question:
WHY THE FUCK SHOULD ANYONE WHO DONATES ILLEGALLY TO A FUCKIN' POLITICAL CAMPAIGN GET THEIR FUCKIN' MONEY BACK!!!!!?
HE shouldn't return it, and SHE shouldn't get it back. The FEC should be able to keep the money to aid in its enforcement efforts.
Posted by: Bubba at November 01, 2008 02:29 PM (Oi0e7)
Assume you're dealing with people who have done "opposition research" on yourself. These are professionals.
We know the Palin smears originated with Axelrod. This appears to have the same pattern, and my little birds tell me it was Axelrod.
I'll tie it all together:
Wright the racist
Ayers the communist
Rezko the 'fixer'
Bauer the censor
Johnson the embezzler
Axelrod the Astroturfer, who would sacrifice members of his employer's family under the heading of "the end justifies the means".
These are all Obama's people.
Of this list, the person the Obama campaign is probably least prepared to defend is Axelrod, particularly since his actions are current.
As a broader "narrative", Obama is a lousy judge of people if he'd hire someone (like Axelrod) who would screw Obama's own family.
