— Ace Whew!
Whoops: I shouldn't have said Obama said it was his call for political reconciliation that reduced violence. He actually said that the "political dynamic" coincidentally changed at about the same time. Democrats have previously attempted to claim it was their "pressuring" of the Iraqi government, by threatening to cut funds and impose timetables, which occasioned this happy (?) accident.
So Obama didn't really say that... but, you know, that's the sort of claim Democrats have made before.
...
I used to think he was Captain Bullshit.
Now I think he is so dangerously narcissistic his ego just warps the world around him, like gravity, so that everything really does wind up revolving around him.
Thanks to CJ.
UPDATE [Dave in Texas]: former Marine Steve Schippert at Threatswatch.org points out the Anbar Awakening started with one sheik and seventy other men, simply fighting Al-Qaeda for survival and to protect their families. They didn't have a political bone to pick with anybody. It's laughable to claim political pressure, from either Democrats or the Iraqi government had any influence on the Anbar Salvation Council whatsoever. Of course, it does make Obama's claim that he couldn't have anticipated it more believable; he didn't even know what the hell it was.

Couric:
after Jordan. And according to a recent poll out of Jerusalem, Israeli Jews favor John McCain for President 43 to 20 percent, with one-third undecided. Why do you think that's the case?
Obama: Well, I think it
I'm not as well known as John McCain. I think that's obviously a factor.
From their interview tonight on CBS. Captain Bullshit strikes again with an assertion so laughably retarded that I personally find it semi-endearing. I'd link but I don't know how. It's on their homepage right now.

Sure- the troops helped. The political reconciliation? Totally unrelated to the reduction in violence, because everyone knows that sectarian violence in no way has any effect on political stability. Nope. None at all.
The only thing that leads to political stability? A message of Hope and Change, delivered by a certified Lightworker.
The violence in Darfur? Totally Obama's fault. Had he used his divine powers to bring reconciliation, it would've ended long ago. I blame racism.

There are layers of bullshit in that statement one of which is his implicit assumption that if only they "knew" him better they would fall in line. There's also the laughable assertion that he's not as well known in Israel as John McCain. Certainly his Jerusalem backtrack not to mention anti-semitic preacher and ties with the Chicago Palestinian community couldn't have anything to do with it. He's Captain Bullshit and the normal rules of saying stupid shit and then getting laughed by the media don't apply.

What I want to know is, when the Euroweenies have had enough of obamamania (and it appears a few cracks are starting to show) and start to talk about how they really don't think he's the guy for POTUS, not a world leader, etc, will the left scream at us to listen to our European betters as they did when the Euros endorsed Kerry?

"I did not anticipate, and I think that this is a fair characterization, the convergence of not only the surge but the Sunni awakening in which a whole host of Sunni tribal leaders decided that they had had enough with Al Qaeda, in the Shiia community the militias standing down to some degrees. So what you had is a combination of political factors inside of Iraq that then came right at the same time as terrific work by our troops. Had those political factors not occurred, I think that my assessment would have been correct."

Watching his lick spittles in the press spinning for him is amazing. I just watched Mattews assert that Obama is being positively Trumanesque by "taking on Petraeus" and making it clear that he would run the policy, not the generals. He went on to say that Bush has been defering to the generals (or Cheeeeney..he thinks thats cute) for the past 7 1/2 years and this will be quite a change. This, after 7 1/2 years of saying daily that Bush is clueless and won't listen to anyone.
It would be more appropriate to compare Obama to Carter or LBJ who ran wars and policy based on what they felt in DC rather than letting the facts on the ground get in way.
I'm still waiting for one of these geniuses to point out to Obama that Petraeus is in charge of both the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and if he thinks that we need to keep troops in Iraq rather than moving them to Afghanistan it's because he knows both situations and the needs of the military a shit load better than a community organizer from Chicago.

I, too, was very, very disappointed they didn't hire Williams. Great defensive head coach, quality guy in the mold of Gibbs. Looked not only for talent, but for character as well. I smell the hand of Cerrato in the not-hiring.
Still, the addition of Taylor completes a great off-season. Now let's watch how the injuries/murders* decimate a season of promise.
9-7, maybe 10-6. Playoffs -- lose in first round. This from a lifelong 'Skins fan.

I have mixed feelings about the whole Sean Taylor thing, so I kinda avoided getting into a debates about it on the internet. Sounds like Taylor was a decent man, or tried to be decent, but suffice it to say: He was no Pat Tillman. Taylor was murdered for no good reason. Tillman died a hero...under awful circumstances. Both senseless tragedies, but only one was in a war zone.

Bart, many genuine thanks for your kindness about my brother. No, he wasn't a veteran (our dad was), but he lived most of his adult life in Arlington, so that's why we buried him there (not in THE Arlington Cemetery). His resting place is beautiful, but it provides no solace. Lung cancer metastisized into brain cancer, which caused a fatal stroke. Too young, too young, no chance to say goodbye. Ten days from first diagnosis to death.
Regarding Taylor v. Tillman, here's what I think... Taylor was, during his time at U of Miami and first year or so with the Redskins, a typical punk of the Miami mold. But his girlfriend-cum-fiance and their child turned his heart toward goodness, responsibility, and leadership. His teammates noticed the difference in his attitude and actions. When confronted with imminent danger within his home, he purposely chose to confront it in order to protect his wife-to-be and child. It was a split-second decision that caused him his life.
Tillman is a hero of the greatest order -- a man who had everything and an unlimited horizon of even grander rewards -- who consciously, deliberately, and studiously gave up everything to serve his country. At any time he could have changed his mind, but he chose not to do so.
There is no comparison here, I think, no better hero. Both, when faced with life's ultimate choice, chose the higher, nobler path.
Pat Tillman was a national hero. Sean Taylor was a personal, family hero. Both are great and good callings, and the path to eternal salvation.
I admire Pat Tillman for his patriotism, loyalty, devotion to duty, and putting country above self. I admire Sean Taylor for putting his family above his own safety above self.
