NYT Completely Botches Claim On Racial Disparity In Cop-Stops, Plus Calls Hispanics "Them Hispanic People" For Good Measure
— Ace

Journalism.

Whites are more, not less, likely to be given "summosnes" (sic) by cops, and more cops were found to hassle whites than originally reported.

Other than that, the article is perfectly accurate, though we await a response from "them Hispanic people."

Thanks to CJ.

2 Was there any attempt to correlate friskings, arrests and uses of force with the types of crimes committed and/or the relative frequency?  I would be shocked *SHOCKED* if there wasn't.

4 OU_Gryphon is dead-on in his question. The NYT reported the results for the raw figures. When those figures were corrected for time, place, and reason for stop, the racial bias all but disappeared. From the Rand report (p. 43) ("aggregate figure" means prior to corrections):

On Stops:
"The racial distribution of stops was similar to the racial distribution of arrestees in most categories. Hispanics were stopped 5 to 10 percent more than their representation in crime-suspect descriptions would predict. Black suspects, on the other hand, were stopped substantially less than would be expected, 20 to 30 percent less than their representation in crime-suspect descriptions."

On Frisk Rates:
"Three-fourths of the racial gap in frisk rates was due to differences in time, place, and other situational factors."

On Weapons Recovery:
"Analysis of data on weapons recovered from searches and frisks revealed that weapon recovery rates were nearly equal across racial groups of similarly situated suspects. The aggregate figure that frisked white suspects were 70 percent likelier to have a weapon than was a black suspect is distorted by racial differences in time, place, and reason for the stop."

The NYT article should be completely recanted.

Don't hold your breath.

Good fact-checking, by the way.  I was too lazy to look it up myself, but I had a feeling that as with most shock surveys, either the real results of the survey were distorted, or the statistical analysis was flawed.

OT, but speaking of statistical malfeasance, someone once tried to convince me that ultrasounds caused birth defects because babies with birth defects/premature birth had more ultrasounds.  It obviously hadn't occurred to them that birth defects were the cause of extra ultrasounds, not the other way around.  It's just one example of how looking at raw results uncritically can reveal all kinds of spurious correlations.

Well, if Law & Order is telling the truth, and I'm sure it is, rich white people are the only ones who commit crimes.
