— Gabriel Malor Doug Hoffman, Bill Owens, and Dede Scozzafava had their one and only debate last night. Says one viewer:
Owens and Scozzafava are obviously more comfortable in public speaking than Doug Hoffman as would be expected from their professions of politician and lawyer as opposed to HoffmanÂ’s career in accounting. For myself it was substance over presentation that was important and I thought Hoffman did well, a B+. Scozzafava did very well on the background issues facing the district, but since it is her judgement and liberal leanings which are in question, one has to ask whether knowledge of the issues, without a strongly principled background, would lead to the best solutions.
Anybody else see it? Let us know what you thought in comments.

As an outdoorsman, with a degree in Wildlife Management, I have an understanding of nature that urban liberals have no concept of. Nature is not your playground. Nature does not love you. Nature cannot be negotiated with, sweet talked, or shamed. If you are helpless, stay out of the wilderness, unless you go with someone who is not. If you are helpless, predators will sense it. And they will eat you. Thats just natural.

Ever notice that folks who have a clue use the term "nature" and those urban libs what don't use "environment"?
Why the hell is that, anyway?

From what I have seen lately these debates are pretty worthless anyway, at least at the national level.
They get the rules set up such that canned questions and responses are given. We wind up with nothing more than 5 minute sections of talking points from each candidate straight out of the campaign playbook.
That is not a debate.

Nothing would please me more than dropping AlGore off in the Adirondacks some August, about three miles off a road with nothing but a bottle of water *gasp!* a walking stick, and a compass. Absolutely no DEET. Just to see if he can make it back alive.
On the bright side, dead folk-pop singers and dead bloviating windbags have a much smaller carbon footprint than jet-setting folk-pop singers and bloviating windbags.

Debates are a joke. Half the questions are about how the candidates are going to pander to groups with funds, half the questions are about how candidates are going to pander to social groups with laws, and ALL of the questions are designed to embarrass or marginalize the conservative candidate.

coyotes can't climb trees correct. I would think I would climb up a tree. If they jumped to get me i would take my belt off, form a lasso. Lasso the next of one and choke it to death. Then I would wears its carcas as a coat, come down from the tree, assert my dominance over the pack, and breed with their women.
Clearly I am an outdoorsman of epic proportions.

34 maddogg, you have to appear pretty helpless for a coyote to even get close to you. Also didn't think they had ranged that far North. Of course I had a couple of chipmunks almost kill me - they got into my pack on the back side of the Tetons -- I was wet and cold that night.
A coyote may not have experience with people. That, among other factors can influence their relative agression.I had a pack of them follow me through the southern Rockies in Colorado. I had 2-3 miles to walk back to camp. It was pitch black and I could hear them running around me less than 50 yards out. I was armed only with a bow. And there must have been more than 10 of them. They followed me almost all the way back to my camp. They kept yipping and growling in the dark. I was nervous, and the hair on the back of my neck was standing up the whole way. They didn't quite have the nerve to try me, and for that I was grateful. That was not a good walk in the dark!

Are you talking about the mexican immigrant smugglers? We've got some in Chicago. Lots of polish ones too.
Or did you mean the animal? Yeah we've got those too. In Chicago.
And Wisconsin.
And probably Canada.
Maybe not the exact same species of coyote but dude those things are not tropical. They're everywhere.
One of my dogs left a ball in the back yard and the coyote took to playing with it. Tossed it up in the air and chased it. It did that with semi-alive squirrels too.
If you don't know what a coyote looks like you could probably mistake it for a dog, not just in looks but in mannerisms. My mother started feeding one and it'd come up to the gate and howl until she went out and tossed it food. They're basically wild dogs.

I used to live in a neighborhood where there were a lot of those cars that spewed out all kinds of horrid noise they called "music". I really enjoyed driving through that neighborhood with that station cranked up and classical music pounding out all over. It was great for that, but as soon as the music stopped it sucked bowling balls through garden hose.

64 pounds is big enough to take deer, and pop singers who are helpless, especially in numbers. Coyotes are very fast, and tough. A Coyote is more than a match for a dog twice his size. People underestimate them. They are wolves, after all.

Nowadays , deer hunters kill 'em all the time . Perhaps that's why they're not aggressive towards humans around here .

Nothing. The bears can thrive on a diet of leftoid Grizz huggers. May they eat their fill!

The Eastern coyote is quite a bit bigger than the western, probably due to inbreeding with gray wolves in MN and WI as they crept this way. I shot one in Montana that went about 25 lbs and people were talking about it being good sized. That's nothing here.

Mebbe not. I had a dog I picked up on the plains in New Mexico. Half starved. I swear he was half Coyote. Looked like a German Shephard with a rough coat. Took me half an hour to talk him close enough to grab. He was the best dog I ever had. He was a killer though. He loved to fight, always won, and would kill at the drop of a hat, unless I was there to stop him. But if he didn't know you, he didn't like you, and if he didn't like you, he really, really didn't like you...

70 I've seen several "coy-dogs" around, and they tend to head for generic german shepherd in appearance, even if daddy was a pomeranian or something. I can always tell them because they keep that "side-assed" coyote motion when they run.
Yep, he did that. I always wondered why he ran slightly crab-wise.

Coyotes, generally, aren't all that dangerous. And they're typically quite intimidated by full grown humans.
1 coyote, in all likelyhood, couldn't take me. They aren't that tough. 2 coyotes might not take me (imo). A pack of them larger then that, 5 or 6 coyotes, you're pretty much utterly screwed if they get a jump on you. Thankfully coyotes have to be extremely damn desperate so it's pretty rare. Or if you're out in the middle of nowhere and they don't know what you are they might get bold.
Those 2 coyotes that attacked that 19 year old girl didn't drop her though. She died from the wounds but I mean, if that was a grizzly, he'd have ate her.
They shot the ones that lived around here. I was mildly disappointed as they didn't bother me a bit and I kind of liked them. But people were worried about their dogs.
Down south in Will county farmland there's lots of them and they're in packs and people shoot them all the time.
Around here in the suburbs I always saw them alone. They don't need to form up big packs because it's easy living next to humans. All our trash, plus the metric fuckton of small game (racoons, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, possums, that all also thrive from said trash, bird feeders, vegetable gardens, and lack of tolerance for too many predators, forest preserves where there's no hunting, nobody shoots the deer).
For the most part they're nothing more then a nuisance and a danger only to unattended small children and pets, mostly at night.
I don't think the ones around here ever even ate anybodies pet. People were just worried they might. Dude next door lets the chihuahua out the door in the mornings and it just runs up and down block.
Wolves are a different matter. They can be quite dangerous if so motivated.

Man thought they were oversize puppies . Friggin idiot . If I lived in Grizzly country I wouldn't go anywhere without some serious firepower . I'd go to great lengths to avoid shooting one but if I was seriously threatened I'd smoke one in a heartbeat . They are dangerous and unpredictable and beautiful and wild . I love 'em . Wish we had them here . It'd make deer hunting a whole 'nother ball game .
Posted by: akward davies at October 30, 2009 06:31 AM (wb68R)
I'd go to great lengths to avoid shooting one
I would also go to great lengths to avoid shooting one, only because I'm kind of afraid the gun would not drop the thing and just piss it off.
So unless it's already pissed off, best not to try it.
Otherwise if I had an AK-47 on me I'd empty 8 clips into damn thing on first site.
Posted by: Entropy at October 30, 2009 06:41 AM (IsLT6)
I agree with most of your post but generally grizs don't usually eat people. Grizzles kill them more often the black bears but they usually don't eat you. Black bears on the other hand, if they attack you, they plan on eating you. So the rule of thumb with bears is play dead during a griz attack(unless you have some serious firepower on you) and fight for your life during a black bear attack.

Whenever we hiked into back country in northwestern Montana, we'd always tie a cowbell to our backpacks, and everyone packed a side arm.
Most attacks in wilderness areas occur because someone inadvertently gets between a mother and her cubs.
