— Purple Avenger Ace: I'll reopen the thread with a couple of provisos.
One, keep it a bit lighter in tone or less personal as regards good-faith criticisms.
Two, bear in mind it reads a little Obamabot-ish to see people torn a new one because they aren't as enthusiastic about Palin as you might be.
Three, restrict personal attacks to those who've attacked you on a personal level. Far as I can tell, the only person at NRO to have done this is Brookheiser. As he insulted pretty much the whole of the conservative base in fairly personal terms, he invited a similar response.
Four, I'm going to delete some of the over the line comments, and I hope not to see similar comments.
Five, bear in mind I'm not blaming anyone, really. I didn't start this thread. I understand it's called a flame thread and that implies, well, flames. But I don't think it's a good idea, and would have said so if asked beforehand. I just don't think it's either smart or fair to rip political allies (and good people, mostly, I think) for having an honest disagreement. I'm not scolding anyone, I'm just explaining (and, um, enforcing) my belief that it's just not a terrific idea to tear the ass out of NRO because some of their writers aren't on board with Palin (and one is a prick about it).
Retired (Not Gay) joined in the intended spirit of the thread and took a meant-to-be-funny shot at a Cornerite. I'm not blaming him -- it was a Flame thread -- I'm just expressing my strong belief that this is simply a bad idea, a bad road to go down.

Thank you for setting Rick Brookheiser straight. I don't know what's behind the conservative intelligentsia's hand-wringing over Sarah Palin. I suspect that Krauthammer, Gallagher, Goldberg, Frum, Douthat, Ponnuru and the rest of the soi-disant "thoughtful, reasonable conservatives" are busy playing the credentialism game out of hope for acceptance by their counterparts on the left.
Well, I went to one of the most pretentious colleges imaginable, and then I went to a fancy law school, pausing to pick up a master's along the way, and I don't give a fig what the New Republic or the Atlantic Monthly thinks. Among other important lessons, my experiences at those places taught me that fancy degrees are a poor prophylactic against dumb-assery, and that there is often more true education at an undistinguished directional school that nobody ever heard of than in the Ivy League, Seven Sisters, and the liberal arts colleges where you call your professor by his first name.
To be fair, I know that several of the individuals named above tepidly support McCain's pick, and I suppose that's better than nothing. I also know that some of them have, from time to time, taken conservative positions that the mainstream left-intelligensia have dubbed "extreme." Perhaps that's why their playing of the credentialism game is especially bizarre. But if they want to play this game, fine: I've got a wall full of diplomas that I'd gladly put up against any of theirs, and I say Gov. Palin is an outstanding pick.

No 21st Century conservative can be ignorant of the vast pool of highly intelligent, fiercely literate and incredibly competent people who drive the movement from blogs and businesses and less famous public offices across the land and Sarah Palin is one of the true leaders. She may be the next Reagan. Probably not, there aren't many of those, but let's take a good look.
Besides any man opposed to her is just a sucker of cock.

Gravy would be if the Left attacks her on the Wooten firing. Let's go all-in for Dirty Harry, too. The guy tasered his 10 y.o. stepson. As I saw on another blog, "is defending domestic violence and child abuse REALLY the hill the Left wants to die on?"
Are there any other cultural icons that she can be painted as? Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, perhaps.
You know, on one of this morning's talking head news shows I saw a clip of her nailing Biden for his vote - 30 years ago - against the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. She was pointing out that he has a long history of being out-of-touch on the energy issue. I think the senior Senator from Delaware just got dunked on.

Purple Avenger is dead on. The money is the indicator of consequence. (As soon as I read that Palin was the pick, I went to the McCain site and made a donation.)
Sarah Palin has got the great missing base fired up. Did Ramesh think that we were going to march in the streets chanting "Rom-ney! Rom-ney!" ??
My die-hard Democratic family are stunned.
Perhaps she will not be enough. Perhaps we are in a "long twilight struggle," but baby, the Palin pick show that my party has the stones to play big!

NRO wandered out of my regular rotation. I've checked a few times since the Palin nod and have been dismayed at the lukewarmness. I don't feel like spending the time to read those milksaps just in order to rebut them.
What people haven't done for the most part -- and here I mean NRO and the MSM -- is look past her biography and the standard calculations.
I like her bio just fine, it's when she opens her mouth and starts talking that you realize she is capable of changing the game in a good way. Get past the memes, peeps, trust your ears.

Why doesn't anyone put these 2 videos in the same post for the world to see? It would only take a few minutes, and is justly embarrassing to Biden:
Video 1 - Biden making a noteworthy mistake he's criticized for
Video 2 - Biden making the exact same mistake 3 days later
Note: He had the correct term in his written convention speech. It's all his mistake.

Liberal Fascism is an important book, but in the process of writing and selling it he became overly deferential to the left. The book is littered with milquetoasty, apologetic "I'm-not-saying-that-modern-liberals-could-ever-have-anything-to-do-with-fascism" suck-ups to his pals at the New Republic.
Worst of all, a few weeks back he was pushing Palin! Now he's getting cold feet, because he's suck-up douche who likes being considered "thoughful" by the liberals in his D.C. neighborhood.
Get the fuck out, Goldberg, and take your Simpsons references with you. Even your goddam couch is sick of you.

Agreed, on both counts. But, she could also be something bigger - someone who really does flip the entire apple cart. Conservatives, especially those of the paleo bent, are always concerned with the dangers of rising populists. Not to say that Palin has yet demonstrated such tendencies, just that a quick political rise, on reformist rhetoric, has proven problematic in the past.
Beyond that (unlikely) danger picture her eight years from now after McCain has successfully completed two terms in office sans any major political disasters. Hell, it could end up something the likes of Palin/Jindal and a sunset for all the old line careerists.

They always wear sack cloth and ashes every election cycle. Remember in 2004, and they were worried about some Republican's appearance on Meet the Press, said it was worrisome. A reader had to write in and remind them that the Republican base was in church on Sunday mornings, not watching Meet the Useless and Lame Press.

But so many in the media, including people at NRO, sound so PRISSY in wringing their hands about her lack of experience.

And it's not a question of whether they are conservative enough, in their urban detached chic sort of way.
It's a question of whether they realise that 90% of those hip and happening city people they mix with won't come around to conservatism no matter how we package it.
The conservative base is small towns. Palin energizes that base. Energizing that base gets Republicans elected.
It is not that hard to understand, and I note that Victor Davis Hanson and Mark Steyn are totally onboard with this pick, which should be all the hint the hiptards need.

candidate nor the Democratic candidate had enough votes to win. There was
much talk about ballot recounting, court challenges, etc., but a week-long
ice fishing competition seemed the sportsmanlike way to settle things. Therefore, it was decided that there should be an ice fishing contest between the two candidates to determine the winner. The candidate that caught the most fish at the end of the week would win the election. After much of back and forth discussion, it was decided that the contest take place on a remote frozen lake in northern Minnesota .
There were to be no observers present, and both men were to be sent out
separately on this isolated lake and return at 5 P.M. with their catch for
counting and verification by a team of neutral parties. At the end of the
first day, John Mc. returned to the starting line and he had ten fish.
Soon, Obama returned and had no fish. Well, everyone assumed he was just
having another bad hair day or something and hopefully, he would catch
up the next day.
At the end of the 2nd day John Mc. came in with 20 fish and Obama came in again with none.
That evening, Harry Reid got together secretly with Obama and said,
Obama, I think John Mc. is a low-life, cheatin son-of-a-gun. I want you
to go out tomorrow and dont even bother with fishing. Just spy on him and
see just how he is cheating.
The next night (after John Mc. returns with 50 fish), said to Obama, Well, tell me, how is John Mc. cheating?
Obama replied, Harry, youre not going to believe this, but hes cutting
holes in the ice.
[feel free to substitute the names of any of the NRO writers with that of Obama and Palin's for McCain's]

Let me give you an example of what I mean. Once upon a time, Bill Kristol was leading a movement of new conservativism and had a great degree of freedom to say things that were not just sound bites, but were meaningful and important. Then, he became a "fox all star", got invited to the DC cocktail scene and has totally sold-out (oh yeah, he's a jew too). Occassionally some of these folks will write something meaningful, but now they are just to invested in what the establishment holds for them, fame, book deals and recognition as being "thoughtful." If someone like Palin (or to some extent McCain) takes over and dismantles the DC scene, this is against their self-interest. So, they are vested in conservativism, but only rinoish conservativism. They are also cocksuckers (keep those numbers up).

Although I was going to pull the lever for McCain - I sure wasn't excited about it. Now I can't wait! I feel an energy and enthusiasm about this campaign as I am voting FOR a ticket now - not AGAINST one - Obama bin Biden.
The fact that she is the only one with Executive Leadership experience - not McCain, Biden, or Osama, keeps getting purposely ignored.

Maybe I'm getting the wrong impression from this thread, but it seems that comments like these are less focused on what the NRO crowd believes and advocates for, and more with the lifestyles they lead in their spare time. Who gives a shit about that? They're on the right side of the issues most of the time. And I'd also add that, despite the clear fact that most of you somehow find their lifestyles somehow offensive or pussified, they've defended yours several times in the past. I specifically remember Nordlinger writing a cover story a few years back praising Wal-Mart to the skies. They've also had good things to say about NASCAR and the like.

Sarah Palin has grabbed Libertarians by the collar and said "Come with me if you want to live". I think this aspect is being underestimated. Yeah, the abortion thing isn't so great for libertarians, but she doesn't preach about it, she just lives her personal convictions. Libertarians respect that. Even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the worst that happens is that the issue is returned to the states. Do you think California or Massachusetts will outlaw abortion? Please.
And her small-government anti-corruption cred earns massive props with libertarians. Reason magazine needs to get on board ASAP. They have a weird anti-McCain vibe over there, I think it's because one of their senior people wrote an anti-McCain book they're trying to flog.

Despite the fact that http://reason.com/blog/show/128464.html
Palin "seems to be about as good a pick from a major party as libertarians could hope for" those chuckleheads can only snark about the fact that she happens to be a woman.
I remember when people read Reason for serious public policy articles. Since Postrel left, you have a better chance of reading such articles in Tiger Beat.

Are you not picking up we're putting down on purpose, Andrew? It isn't that they live a different lifestyle as most conservatives. It's that they are more attached to and defensive of the political establishment than there ideology, and, hence, 95% of other conservatives in the country. This is about the base vs. the establishment, not lifestyles.

Here's mine to Goldberg;
Im pulling for her too.
Then act like it! Try showing a little enthusiasm, maybe even a little optimism.
Did you hear Limbaugh the other day? Learn! He knows, just like the rest of America knows, that Palin is a choice that shakes the socialists right down to their socks.
And if the weenies at NRO would try actively supporting her, rather than indulging in the ever-so-predictable hand-wringing, navel-gazing yes but- ing, all for the purpose of showing off their deep understanding of American politics, we might just kick a little ass in Nov.
You guys need to get out more. A lot more.
And the next time someone calls you a racist because you dont support the campus commie theyre running- try kicking them in the balls before you explain for the 500th time that you arent a racist. Try it once, I guarantee you wont have to do it more than a few times. And youll feel and look like a man afterwards.

Scientists concerned for her health are rushing to invent a speaker large enough to blast "Hungry Like the Wolf" at sufficient volume to shake the K-Lo chubbolith off her chocolate-trough, while her religious fans pray for the sake of her soul that no one tells her the Vatican isn't actually a giant church-shaped cake, etc.
I don't even know what she looks like. Doesn't matter. Thread-CPR.

Let's see, Steyn is a Canuck with a British accent (WTF?, I've always asked) that lives in the woods of NH, and VDH is a farmer that got an education because farming 50 acres in California and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee in most places. To Goldbergs credit, he was spot on ripping Dreher on the whole Crunchy Con BS.
He's usually not wrong. But I liked him alot better back when he was getting advice from his couch instead of whoever has his ear now.
This issue just shows that while Goldberg is right 85% of the time, Steyn is right 95% of the time. And (unlike Goldberg) a big of gray hair and a few cocktails haven't caused him to lose his sense of humor (or penchant for some healthy risk) about the whole godawful business.

And, though Im certainly willing to give him a hard time if I think hes wrong, I will also note that it's his site, his rules, and we should respect that (as much as morons are capable of respect anyway).
So ... er .... NRO sucks! Bleh, between the various threads, I think I've exhausted my vitriol on the topic. I hate the Corner, haven't read it in years, and only jumped back in the last few days to see what all the excitement was about. Clearly, this was a mistake I won't be making again any time soon.

That said, let's not kid ourselves about Palin. Yeah she seems great but there are a lot of unknowns about her that may or may prove to be problems or assets. And can any one honestly say if Hillary hadn't been such a factor or if Sarah was white guy named Samuel, the first term governor of the 48th most populous state with zero national profile would have been the VP nominiee? Really?
Look I'm more inclined to support this ticket than I ever thought I would be but to say anyone who questions the move is defacto off the conservative reservation is just bizzare.

I don't really want to do that to them, either. I really am not "friends" with any of them, but for the sake of disclosure I *rarely* exchange emails with Ex-Cornerite JPOD, have met K-Lo and Goldberg (briefly), and Styen (VERY briefly), have exchanged brief emails with Levin and interviewed McCarthy on the old radio show. I kinda know Spruiell. Played poker with him a few times.
It's harder to be personally mean to someone you've even met or kinda know, and so I might have a bit of emotional reluctance about this.
It's not that I think criticizing NRO is off limits. I just don't want it to be a general flame thing. Bear in mind, when we flame war each other, we're all in on the joke and active, willing participants.
Did K-Lo sign up to get roughed up in a flame thread? Of course not.
Posted by: ace at August 31, 2008 12:23 PM (1WR4H)
M1R, sure raise legit questions. But this?
"Palin will also be assigned to pacify conservatives. On the evidence of the numerous emails reprinted here, that will be easily done. Reader after reader said that the base was now energized. You would have thought the base was energized by being in a war. If not, perhaps we need a new base.
We have shown the same color-by-numbers mindset that liberals did when they rallied to Obama. Liberals love Obama because he is a Numinous Negro. Conservatives love Palin because she has a Downs baby and an M-16. For both sides, that is all on earth ye know and all ye need to know. You might call it mystical and childish"

This is the same sort of thing Ronald Reagan faced in 1982, when the Rockefeller sorts, worried, installed Bush Sr. as VP to keep Reagan under thumb. We see how that played out...Reagan is a hero to those of us who appreciate a strong conservative politician; Bush, and later Bush the Weaker, not so much.
Sarah Palin I can see installed to keep conservative check on John McCain. And, later, as the strong 'C'onservative we'll need to lead the party out of the wilderness. Even if we lose this one, Palin-Jindal or Jindal-Palin is our future.
And to hell with most of those non-Conservative sissified weakling RINOs at NRO (not so much Jonah Goldberg, as he did give us Liberal Fascism, which is one of the best reads I've thouroughly enjoyed in years..)

I see what happens when conservatism becomes a merely metropolitan cult: conservative politics becomes marginalized and impotent. That's not going to happen here; and it won't be me and my big city pals that prevent it, it'll be the legions of real, authentic conservatives out there in the provinces.
