Noonan, Parker, Buckley Have a Bad Case of PMS

Maybe its just me, but Ive detected in some of the conservative critics of Sarah Palin and, to a lesser extent, John McCain, a tendency to call attention to the fact that their position has (supposedly) made them, and their dear friends, vilified figures. Vilified in this instance means they receive angry e-mails or are on the receiving end of agitated to marginally agitated blog postings. This conveniently allows for the opportunity to inject a bit of melodrama into the whole thing.
The point in calling attention to their persecution seems to be to remind us, in what they hope is a subtle but not too subtle way, what intrepid and independent-minded individuals they are. It might also offer them the opportunity to distance themselves from the nasty, narrow, knuckle-dragging crowd from which they stand miles apart. They are willing to sustain the slings and arrows from (gasp) the blogosphere and in return, they get to appear on The Colbert Report, or The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, or MSNBC, or find their pieces published in prominent national newspapers.
Oh, life in this vale of tears.
Its perfectly fine for people on the right/semi-right to criticize Governor Palin and Senator McCain, though one might hope they could marshall some serious arguments on their behalf (some Palin and McCain critics have, and some have not). Id also prefer that the differences be expressed in a relatively civil way, on both sides. But in politics, sometimes things get rambunctious. In any event, it seems to me one thing we can do without is the Martyr Syndrome. To criticize Sarah Palin or announce you are going to vote against John McCain does not take particular courage, intellectual or otherwise. And to pretend it does is to engage in an adolescent game.

I think Steyn had the best take in his post here - there are boutique conservatives and then there are conservatives who actually live and work in a conservative world. And a lot of the boutiquers think that the latter are just icky and come nowhere close to the platonic ideal of what a Conservative should be.

THE TAX POLICY THAT COULD STILL WIN MCCAIN THE ELECTION:

One thing McCain is NOT good at - political judo - using an opponents strengths against him.

When Obama announced his $500 tax cut for 95% of all Americans, McCain should have countered that 40% of all Americans do not pay taxes and therefore it is not a tax cut, but a welfare check.

He should have said, therefore, my campaign will be offering an $800 tax cut to everyone making under $250,000 a year who ACTUALLY PAY TAXES.

You see folks, thats the difference between a capitalist and a socialist. A socialist wants to spread the wealth around, a capitalist wants to let you keep more of your own money...

CONCLUSION:
This one simple policy could still win the election for McCain.

Amazed that people they considered friends would write them off for being honest about Sarah Palin and her lack of qualifications. (After all, we are talking about a woman who just suggested that media criticism of a person running for office violates that candidate seeker's first amendment rights!!! Two things I learned:

Fox played two clips from the trail today, one with McCain upbeat saying, essentially, We Can Do It!, and another with Obama which, actually, smelled of desperation. Almost pleading, (pp) "We need all of you young people to get out and vote and we need to you to grab five others too."

You might note that the Press isn't Congress.

Guess what, the press gets to criticize the things that politicians both do and say. If you or Governor Palin don't like that, might I suggest a number of other countries where politicians do not have to confront a free and often adversarial press?

I knew I had a good reason for not owning a television.

But, really, who pays any attention to Noonan and Chris Buckley? Last I heard of Buckley was a quarter century ago when he wrote wistfully and regretfully about not serving in Vietnam. Peg snarks amusingly in the WSJ and elsewhere and I liked her Revolution book about Reagan but she's like the frosting on a cake; cloyingly sweet but not filling. They're not going to sway any votes.

46 AmishDude - Sarah Palin's attraction for me (that is, the attraction not having to do with boots...) is that whatever her personal beliefs, she's governed according to the law. She has not lunged for the political third-rail of creationism as Bobby Jindal did, she did not support an effort to ban gay civil unions, etc.

It always fascinates me to see all these folks, mostly on the left but a few of all political stripes, seem to think that anyone who actually admits to being a Christian must somehow be mentally deficient. These are the same people who will give Obama a pass on twenty years of attendance at a 'Christian' church because the pastor's more into race-baiting than faith.

I'm a weddings-and-funerals Episcopalian myself, I know we've got a Bible in the house somewhere but I couldn't quite tell you where, but I know lots of evangelicals who run businesses and raise families and are just standard-issue normal people.

48 Sarah Palin is the MAIN reason Johnny Mac has a shot right now. Without the conservative base having someone to love and fight for, he would be losing by 25 points right now. The volunteers and GOTV people are jazzed like they haven't been in a long time. That lady is something special, and most regular Americans can sense it almost right away. I've watched every campaign stop of Sarah I could find the last few weeks, and she has been on fire! Even this morning in Latrobe, Pennsylvania she had "Iron" Mike Ditka to introduce her, and he was great. This woman connects with people like noting I've seen before. She's a natural campainger, and she's right on the important issues also. She's really great on the economy from a conservative point of view, explaining in plain talk how to grow the pie for everyone(if you listen to HER, not just what the media tells you).

Son in the Army, special needs baby, unapologetic patriotism, infectious energy and downright loveable. Sarah ain't goin' anywhere, here to stay! You betcha!

(not really, but I'll play along) Obama has been a US Senator for a few years - Palin has been a Governor for a few years. I'd call it equivalent. Obama was a state senator for several years - Palin was a small town mayor for a few years. Let's call that equivalent. So what we have to look at are the people themselves. Obama reached, quite possibly, the highest level of academic achievement attainable. He was Magna Cum Laude at Harvard Law and was Editor of the Harvard Law Review. - Palin has only a bachelors degree (in Broadcast Journalism no less) which she earned over about 6 years and five different schools - with the University of Idaho being the most prestigious. Looking just at what they were able to achieve academically (ignoring the Community Organizing and Constitutional Law Professorship) which candidate is better qualified for a high level job? Give me a break. You guys have villainized Obama to the point where you don't even see the man any more. He is a brilliant guy. He is a true pragmatist. The President's number one job is to uphold the Constitution. Obama has taught the Constitution. Palin (in the immortal words of a McCain staffer) is a fucking "Wack Job." She's a failed newscaster. Based on her lack of understanding of what the Vice President's job is and what the First Amendment actually means (all amendments for that matter) one can only conclude that Sarah Palin likely has not ever even read the Constitution.

In the Senate you're just voting "yes" and "no" on stuff and making deals. Being a Governor is much closer to the job of being President.

Obama was a state senator for several years - Palin was a small town mayor for a few years. Let's call that equivalent.

Which, again, is just voting "yes" and "no" on stuff and making deals vs. actually running something.

Obama reached, quite possibly, the highest level of academic achievement attainable. He was Magna Cum Laude at Harvard Law and was Editor of the Harvard Law Review. - Palin has only a bachelors degree (in Broadcast Journalism no less) which she earned over about 6 years and five different schools - with the University of Idaho being the most prestigious.

And - to repeat this - (since the people supporting your candidate seem incapable of addressing it):

Sarah Palin is not our Presidential pick and Barack Obama is not your VP pick.

Barack Obama has an impressive academic experience if you don't factor in affirmative action, which he is on record as saying he's "undoubtedly benefited from." (For the record, he did not achieve a law professorship - he was a lecturer, which is a much easier job to obtain.)

Joe Biden's record in this area is far inferior. (Again, already mentioned that - can't blame you for ignoring it.) The guy graduated from the University of Delaware and was caught plagiarizing and almost kicked out of school during his time in academia.

As far as the five schools bit, it wasn't as a result of incompetence/flunking out - Palin's GPA was a 3.4 when she graduated. She just didn't have the money and had to pursue different jobs and scholarships to get through - to harp on this doesn't make you demanding in your candidates when you end up siding with Joe Biden. It makes you a snob, that's all.

P.S. as someone who went to a top five law school, trust me, any law school is not the "highest level of academic achievement." You have to be very clever to get into Harvard Law and graduate at the top. When it comes to public policy, government, economics, etc. you don't actually have to know jack shit -- something that's glaringly obvious whenever Obama is asked a question that doesn't presume his preexisting beliefs.
