I've been thinking the same thing, CPAC has become a joke in my mind. It's not about conservatism anymore, it's about exposure and positioning inside the GOP. Sure Pence gave a good speech but what does it really accomplish?
Makes a few people that like going to conventions feel good for a short time and that's about it.
Posted by: lowandslow at February 28, 2009 09:12 AM (JV2V8)
I do.
How exactly are we supposed to explain our ideals and policy to others without speaking? While action is necessary, it won't automatically bring more people to our side. It would be the height of arrogance to believe that we can attract others by keeping our mouths shut. Don't be obtuse.

This is a serious question; not a joke.
Why did he not lead us last year instead of the liberal who vowed in mid Sep to cancel the campaign and not debate (a vow which he broke in only 2 days!) until we pased W's partial nationalization bill?
Would the GOP not have done better with a conservative as contrasted to the defeate with a lefty leading?
I may be a dumb grunt but it seems to me the GOP normally gets beat when a liberal is the standard bearer.

I think so but that's not who the GOP nominated. Let's face it, the majority of GOP voters don't read blogs, don't know what CPAC is or even know where most politicians stand on the issues. The result? McCain.

Dude, did you read what you just typed?
Obama's speeches, and only Obama's speeches (well, except for that MSM narrative that shilled for him) got him a presidency. He barely voted for action as a legislator, contradicted stated positions regularly, and pretty much hid in plain sight during his rise to power. Yet, somehow, he broke through because of speech and speech alone whether he meant a damn word of it or not.
Movements need speakers. Speech before action. CPAC is the only significant, organized, conservative depot going that mimics the platform used on the campaign trail. It's good practice for a much larger sampling from the Right. Encourage it because we don't have a vast repertoire of substitutes. Consider it the working group for conservative platforms because it sure as hell isn't the GOP.

Pence has a rating of 100 last year and 99.43 lifetime by the ACU. That is one of the highest in congress, Contrast that with what was nominated to run against the Vomit. He had a rating of 65 and 82.16 lifetime. He is a liberal and getting more liberal everyday.

is Pence an open borders guy or not?
He devised the so-called compromise that got written into the bill that said the illegals had to go home and apply to come back. My opinion was that he was trying to be a loyal Republican for Bush but it is a negative mark.
I would not hold that one mistake against him in an election.

I can relate to the frustration of other commenters, but JackStraw is right. If the principles of the Right are to win, they must be shared.
Is Pence an open-borders guy? I don't know. It has no bearing on this speech however, as borders weren't mentioned.
If he is though, and you must dismiss him as a viable candidate in the future, do not dismiss the value in speeches such as this in how they can help determine the direction the Conservative movement takes going forward.

just got thur reading Pence's 2006 plan (co-author Kay B. Hucthinson)
i'm not happy... in first section they use the phrase that tells me everything i need to know "undocumented immigrants" it's symbolic of a mindset
i don't care if we have to go down to 1 truly conservative congresscritter and build up from there, the important thing is to start with something you can count on.
i don't want to comprise with libs/socialists
i don't want to be their "friends"
i want to grind their whole ideaology into the dust
you can't win a battle unless you can count on those around you
say whatever you want about me, that's what i believe and i'm not backing down from it one bit.

I hate to break this to you notropis but there's a rumor floating around the convention (reliably sourced from hotel room-service insiders) that he strongly advocates square cut pizza over regular wedge shaped slices.
Can you say unelectable?
Posted by: Deety at February 28, 2009 09:57 AM (1jglO)
You're definitely right, but there tends to be a bit of a coronation vibe in these good-speech threads.
And I really do think it's too bad that he did what he did on amnesty. It was definitely a major, calculated move to break from the purist conservative principles for which he'd until then stood. And it blew up on him, big time: who would have guessed that *this* was the issue on which the purists would win? But of course, if things had gone his way, it would have hugely boosted his perceived stature... So don't cry for him when the reverse happened.

not me, i've disliked McCain's politics ever since McCain-Fiengold, and my opinion has never changed since then, i did not vote for him, i did not vote because of him
Posted by: shoey at February 28, 2009 10:00 AM (RxUMK)
Let's also recall last year during the campaign. People were disgusted with McCain. Then he gave a one hour interview (great speech!) with Rick Warren and then conservatives and GOP-voters seemingly forgot his last 8 years of bullshit and said "like OMG! I so like McCain now .
I failed to see a big uptick in support for McLame from conservatives. In fact, if you look at the election results in the States that switched side you can see wholesale lots that stayed at home. That speech with Rick Warren didnt change anyones mind about McLame.
I do agree that Republicans need to grow some balls and start fighting back.

It's probably a reference to Palin.
Yeah, probably. The "frontrunner" doesn't even show up at CPAC, but some people are determined to support her in 2012.
Kinda reminds me of Fred. Fred strung these same people along in '07, too.

Why can't we have both - good speaker and action?
Is it that difficult to find a conservative leader that has a track history of results and can give a good speech?
I believe that is the source of Palin's popularity. She fits the bill, unfortunately, she wasn't quite fully prepared for the big stage. It remains to be seen if she has been too damaged for a legitimate run in 2012.
The other element that I am convinced is absolutely necessary is physical attractiveness. It is an unfortunate limiting factor of Amerian society and you just cannot ignore it. The less attractive great conservatives can serve in important cabinet posts. Steve Forbes was a great conservative candidate, but the guy simply was unelectable because he is goofy looking.
Also, it is absolutely required that we look at younger conservative candidates. No more 70 year old war veterans.
The RNC needs to provide intense public relations and public speaking training for all its members and future presidential candidates such as Palin, Jindal, Pawlenty, Sanford, Thune, DeMint, Paul Ryan. A focused coordinated message needs to be developed and then unleash them on any and every tv and radio interview opportunity. We need to cut through all this liberal media bs and reach the independent and swing voters. Limbaugh, Hannity, and Fox News are all preaching to the choir.
One item I disagreed with in Pence's speech was his mocking of Pelosi. He is wrong when he says that Americans weren't asking "What's in it for me?". I assure you there are many, many American's that were saying just that. I work with several of them. Republicans have a monumental task in convincing these types of people they can provide for themselves much better than the government can.
One more crucial item that must be taken care of is the obscene fund raising that Obama managed to raise online. Is anything being done to address credit card donation security measures during future elections?

since when did advocating for enforcement of our immigration law become a "purist" position? i don't actually count myself as a "purist" anything, my own personal opinion is that the State should not have the power to tell a woman she must have a baby, but i rarely if ever mention that because ppl i count as allies feel so strongly about it and i don't want to offend them, i am willing to give on some issues, but not illegal immigration

Who knew Obama before his gift of a speech slot at the DNC convention? Politicians have to start somewhere and try to make waves. There's just no way around that regardless of any actual record of significant accomplishment. Obama made speeches to a liberal base during his climb. Yes, his is an exceptional case because Axelrod greased the skids for him at every challenge, but Obama was a no-name too who capitalized on "just words." He worked the local circuits long before he spoke to the nation.
What is Pence doing? I dunno. I haven't followed him that closely, but here he is now trying to set up shop and drawing attention. Now we can look up his record and see if what he has done jives with what he is saying now. He's working. He's pitching. He's challenging. It's how it's done.
Would you rather hear even more about McCain, Dole, Schwarzenegger, Romney, Huckabee, etc. and trust the MSM to spoon feed you their version of more of the same? Isn't it best at this point to hear some new voices and see if they have something to offer? Well, that takes work on our part, too. Pence is making the effort now. It's your turn to return the favor.
If there were another venue to hear these people out, a venue where the debate is timely, comparable, and contemporaneous to events, I'm all for it. Do you know of another?
As to Pence's "open borders" proclivities, he seems to be (much?) better than average overall with a big black mark WRT the importation of high-skilled labor. I'm against that because it impacts me directly, but he's hardly the worst offender. Surely that particular issue will disappear under the current climate, so I worry about that specifically now none at all. If that was Pence's only flaw, and he talks a good game while supporting a decent conservative rating, then I'll hear the man out. I don't care if it's at CPAC or somewhere else. Right now we have CPAC.

In other words, what is he doing besides giving one good speech to the choir at CPAC,
You're right, CPAC is a "just words" convention. The same do-nothing Congressional Republicans don their Conservative hats for one day and show up at CPAC and pretend to be Ronald Reagan .
Their speeches sound exactly like their RNC fundraising letters: plenty of redmeat and they call out by name the Democrat leaders. But they *almost* never do that in Congress.
Where were all these great Conservatives when SCHIP passed? Or the Lilly Ledbtter Act to Benefit Trial Lawyers? During the six Excutive Orders signed by Obama in his first historic month in the White House?
They're always asking for money in those letters to stop Reid, Pelosi, and Obama. Well, while they're in Congress, why aren't they trying to stop Reid, Pelosi, and Obama?

The point isn't the quality of speech. Our problem is that these guest speakers from Congress aren't out there repeating these same words said at CPAC on the other 364 days in the year. When they're not at CPAC, they're neither talking the talk nor walking the walk.
I'm surprised Susan Collins wasn't at CPAC this year. I mean, why not? She bullshitted the RNC and the Republicans last year into supporting her. And the first chance Collins got to fuck over the GOP, she took it. Without any hesitation, she sided with the Democrats.

Jindahl and Palin will not take the 2012 nom, and if they do, they will lose.
I'm looking for new faces, and I don't know pence even though he's from my state, but I gotta say, that his performance was good and his content was excellent, and he didn't just give a good speech, he would step on the applause and the boos and the cheers.
He didn't speak as a speaker, he spoke as a leader. There are characteristics to leadership that I see in him. I don't know if he can follow through in the long run, but just because you don't think he will pres next election is no reason to stomp on the fact that he gave an effective speech that clearly articulated the ideals of the republicans and the conservatives, and the right in general in a way that boby failed at.
I don't know how Mike is extemporaneous, but I do know how Bobby is when prepared. Bobby did flob the ball even though he was well prepared. He sounded like he was doing the opening moral statement for fucking picture pages.
Pence might have "just given a speech," but you know who else did that? The current fucking president, and at least Pence included content, not axiomatic feel good bullshit.
Yes, it's just one speech, SO FAR!
Jesus, go suck allah's cock, if you can't fucking see that the movement needs a leader, unless you are just some guy who wants to whine shit to make you feel good, maybe you can get your mom to make up an illness for you to suffer, while she gets the munchausean satisfaction of hugging her favorite baby.

I saw an article a couple of weeks ago where some liberal ass republican clown responded to a question about the party pulling support from him during the next election and he responded that he would sue them. His position was that the party rules required them to support the incumbent.
I checked on that and it is bullshit. The party has to support the nominee of the party. If he is not their nominee because he has become a Democrat(R) then they can support someone else.

Executive signing clauses or whatever they are called, should consist of a list of all of the things in the bill that are wasteful and counter to the original intent, but the bill is being signed into law only because, without the signature, the bill wouldn't be passed.

He's been a solid conservative. We don't even all agree here-so stop with the purist crap. It's for losers. So is RINO-ism, but Pence is no RINO.

Maybe, but first what we really need is to win some elections like NY-20, NJ and VA governor for some momentum. We need a goal of not getting wiped out in 2010 in the Senate, and get back some seats in the House.
We need to get some of the blue dogs on board now to oppose Obama's six trillion dollar confiscation of our economy, and at least get SOME changes. We need to oppose socialized medicine, card-check, statehood for DC and a host of other bad ideas that might elicit enough opposition that Obama might not be able to push them through.
If we can do those things we can then worry about the election of 2012. Arguing about Palin and Jindal now ignores the fact there is a lot to be done before the primaries of the next presidential election start.

Don't one-issue the GOP to death -- some of you are doing that in this thread. There is no one-size-fits-all in politics. A 100 rating from the ACU is damn good at ANY time and if Pence keeps that in the high 90s he's in Reagan territory.
Those of you who did not appreciate this great speech from Pence or are going to one-issue him to death might as well go register as Democrats because even if that's not what you are that's what you're going to get with that attitude.
Maybe it's not just RINO Senators we need to get rid of ... maybe it's RINO fuckwarts like some posting on this thread.

do not agree with "let's get over people that give good speeches". Obama and Bush both show us that the content and the medium have to go together. Bush had a few good ideas (especially on foreign policy) but he could not explain them to the public so he got hammered on the public arena and we lost two elections. Obama is selling crap but he knows how to argue and he manages to get it through.
bear with me. i know the media, the establishment etc etc are all in favor of the guy. i know those people are brainwashing the americans. it is still true that we cannot just go out and say "we appeal to the important and fundamental conservative values that all the americans share" and expect the public to figure out the rest. not everybody is a political wonk. not everybody is always up to date on what's going on, what's the problem and how to solve it. most of people want the intellectuals and the politicians to explain the issue and the solutions they propose. if you cannot do that it seems that you do not have one.
politics is the art of persuasion.
many people use rhetorical ability as a proxy for quality of the politicians and of his policies. maybe it's bad, maybe it's good but we cannot just ignore this fact.
we, conservatives, have been the party of ideas for a long time. we produced intellectuals (real ones like Buckley, not echo-chambers morons), think tanks, great public speaker. we cannot just give that up.
we know our product is good. we have to be also good at explain to the public why it's good and why our ways are better. otherwise they'll choose socialism.

THE SOCIAL EVOLUTION OF CONSERVATIVES VS. LIBERALS
The division of the human family into its two distinct political branches occurred some 10,000 years ago, when humans coexisted as members of small bands of nomadic hunter/gatherers.
The pivotal event of societal evolution was the invention of beer.
This epochal event was both the foundation of modern civilization and the occasion of the bifurcation of humanity into its two distinct subgroups: Conservatives and Liberals.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain, and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so it was necessary to stick close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days killing animals to barbecue at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of the conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting, learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly barbecues and doing the sewing, fetching and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the liberal movement. An interesting evolutionary side note: some of these early liberal men eventually evolved into women.
Liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the trade union, the invention of group therapy and group hugs, and the concept of democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that the conservatives provided.
Over the years, conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant.
Liberals are symbolized by the jackass. Modern liberals like imported beer, but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.
Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men.
Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't "fair" to make the pitcher also bat.
Conservatives drink domestic beer; they eat red meat, and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, soldiers, athletes, and generally anyone who works productively outside government. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.
Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to "govern" the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America. The liberals crept in after the Wild West was tamed by the conservatives and then created a business of trying to get MORE for nothing.

While Rush was giving his speech, CSPAN was airing the racist Al Sharpton & friends at the Black Union.
Talk about a stark contrast in philosophy. Rush explained we didn't need to tailor our message to reach blacks, indians, gays, etc. because Conservatism is blind to the social divisions created by the Left. And Sharpton and the other poverty pimps were explaining how "Whitey" is the cause of all the problems in the "black community."
But you'll never hear anyone on CNN call Sharpton or Cornell cocksucker West divisive.

Mike Pence is a good speaker. But he's also an excellent statesman.
In Indiana he had a radio show. I listened back then. He gets it.
Look at Pence's voting record, his life history, and listen to his actual words. It's all in line with real conservative principles. Don't discount him just because he may be polished. Because, if you listen to his speeches then you'll know popularity with the MSM is not his aim. He's courageous in the real sense. He's not a political showman ala Obama. He's us. hey Deety, the reason I ask is I want to start a list of allbanks that took tarp and I want to start a list of all banks that took tarp that make campaign contributions AFTER they took the money. Both politicians local and federal, and how much the contribution is. Nothing will happen right now but the corruption, greed and arrogance of Dems will quickly change that when they think no one is looking. It should be kept track of it, let them hang themselves doing it awhile and then bring it to light at a certain time
Others should do the same, document this stuff. Its more than just changing the messege. Its also about shining a big bright light on the hypocrisy and corruption. Although I think Repubs should right now start thinking how they will combat the voter fraud that wil lhappen come next election. It wil lbe even worse than the last as Zero has showered money on AVCORN and moveon.org. We need to be prepared well in adnvance

My understanding is that in some cases banks that didn't even need TARP I money were pressured into signing on, so that none of the big banks would appear to be riskier than the others by virtue of taking the bail out.
Or, it could be like the senior cop handing over a paper bag full of cash lifted from the crime scene to the rookie to make it less likely that the whistle gets blown, since everyone in the squad is dirty.
What concerns me most, is that whatever the reasons motivating the money transfer, the result is that D.C. now has its tentacles wrapped around the throats of these institutions and I don't see this having a good outcome at all.

OK so the guy's new to me, big deal. Can you tell us something more enlightening?
I'd love to!

Y'all need to read the story Drudge has linked about O's speech to the "State of the Black Union". The link is worded "Obama sees tougher times"
O thinks he is "closing the gap between the nation we are and the nation we can be."
Sorry, I still can't do that linky thing. But the story will piss you off. It actually made me cry.

201 7Heavens; Here. Go read. Learn little grasshopper.
I looked at his site as much as I can at 10:45 PM after a long extra day at work, i.e., drinking Valurite and sniffing glue behind the dumpster. Can you enlighten a little further?

If you want to know about Islam, you should read the Qur'an. I promise you it will surprise you. (Sura 2:29)

Surprise us about what? The fact that it tells people to beat women? Tell us something we don't know.

Surprise us about what?
After reading the Qur'an you will find Islam to be a more powerful threat to the world than you ever imagined it could be. You will be stunned to read that it specifically calls for of cruxifiction, pouring boiling water on peoples' heads, cutting off one hand and then the opposite foot and rubbing salt into the wounds, strangling women with palm ropes, and stoning-to-death as punisments. And yes the beating of women is sanctioned in Islam. Yes, I promise it will surprise you. For you will find Islam is a Satanic Cult that seeks to makes slaves of all unbelievers and their children down to the third generation and to make them all feel that they are slaves. And it aims to do this through long decades of unremitting violence, terror and eventual Nuclear Armageddon at which time Allah shall rise and take his people and a terrible punishment awaits the rest. You will not be the same after you read it, and you will realize how few people know the real truth about this deadly enemy who amis to destroy our world. It has changed me forever. (Sura 2:29)

Erik W - Islam sucks.
Islam sucks more than you will ever know without reading the Qur'an.
I used to read Jihad watch and others and think surely this can't be true, Mohammed and Islam cannot really be this evil, who would listen to the? These are clerics that have hijacked a noble and good religion and distorted it to acheive their own ends, but alas, it is not like that. And 3 billion people on this planet are Muslims. Read the Qur'an to know how they think and you will finally understand what we are up against and why we must defeat Liberalism First and then deal with the Islamic termites as they chew the foundatations of everything in the western world. (Sura 2:29)

I could but I think it would be better if you did your own research--it's the conservative in me. Actually, there are many good links in the thread so it shouldn't be that tough.

Its a joke to see people buying into the Pense isn't an open borders guy. You mean just because McCain bought into Bush's policies and attempted to create a compromise he wasn't an open borders guy?
Some people will believe anything.
I mean look at all the people who believe Obama is going to give you a tax cut.
Does anyone believe that next year your tax burden will be heavier than it was last year? Does anyone believe in four years you will enjoy a higher standard of living than you did during the Bush years?

I'm sympathetic to everyone's frustration about top down agendas from either party. Our problem is not in the politics but in the culture. Until that changes, locally, in our towns and neighborhoods, and trickles up into the national agenda, we will have little traction. The "Tea Party" activity is a manifestation of people starting to realize this. America used to be inherently self-organizing. I hope that's still true because that is what will save us.

Pence is indeed a critter. He listened to his voters and then ignored them and did exactly what he liked.
He is like all the rest of them. Too smart to be concerned about what the voters have to say until his tenure is threatened.

Cont. from above:
I guess in some ways though we hurt ourselves by being so fractious. We start eating our own. There is no such thing as the perfect politician, or perfect Conservative, etc. Why? We have lots of issues. On the left, if you agree on one thing, like abortion, or even if you just hate the "rethuglicans" then that's it. They don't pass the rigors we do on our pols, and sometimes that's not all bad. I consider myself pretty conservative, some libertarian, but I just want someone who gets the basic message. Like Reagan's 11th commandment, you just don't screw over a fellow Conservative. I know this is just a blog, and no one here really knows me, but I think we need to be prepared for the worst, but it's o.k. to have hope. Anyway, sorry I interrupted, but I just get so frustrated seeing the bashing, I understand the frustration, but all I can tell you is, the more ya'll carp here, you are helping the libs. This thread is the very kind of things that the libs get their talking points from. What they do, is find out who conservs either love/.hate, and that's the people they pile on, and they use our words against us.
I'm going to shut up now, thanks for reading all of this long diatribe.
