Mark Foley's Name Will Remain On Ballots, But Any Votes Cast For Him Will Be Counted Towards GOP Replacement
— Ace

Interesting... maybe with a decent replacement candidate the seat can be held.

1 Yikes!

I hope we don't have that law on the books here in NJ...otherwise the Dems could tell the voters that their vote for the scandal-plagued Sen. Menendez would actually be for his potential replacement. I'm still reeling over the Lautenberg-for-Torricelli switcheroo a few years ago.

So while this law may benefit the GOP in the short term, I think it sets a dangerous precedent.

Posted by: GMNJ at September 29, 2006 03:33 PM (7hKZq)

2 Now that FL is doing electronic voting, I think this law needs to be revisited.

With paper ballots there needed to be a reasonable lead time to allow for printing. Now, that lead time shouldn't be much more than a few days .

3 I nominate Purple Avenger. You're in his district, aren't you? I'll vote for you.

Posted by: IreneFingIrene at September 29, 2006 03:51 PM (DYj/s)

4 I'm gonna disagree with you Avenger (though I normally agree.) If the GOP has a turd of an official in office, and he gets busted for doing something stupid, then the GOP's punishment for nominating him is that they have to deal with his name on the ballot after his disgrace.

To allow a replacements merely weeks before an election makes a mockery of the whole primary system, as evident in NJ.

Party insiders would have no disincentive to not encourage popular but shady politicians, because if they don't get busted, fine, if they do get busted, they can be replaced in a moment's notice. And it is not fair to the other candidates, including smaller parties, who nominate guys who at least avoid indictments.

The GOP will have to bite the bullet on this one, as Dems should have in NJ, and try to run a write-in or blank candidate.

7 Foley happens to be just one in a long line of republiscum. A particularly egregious hypocrite. A born again christian like George Bush. Using his power for evil.

Let's not forget the "duke" bribery crybaby, or the "macaca" George racist, or the Bob Ney /Conrad Burns traitors, or the Jeff Gannon prositute journalist, Kidan, Abramoff, Delay, Scanlon, Volz, Bandow., Libby, Norquist........the list goes on and on.

When are you righties going to admit the stench that emanates from your ranks?

Posted by: at September 29, 2006 04:19 PM (GWwJR)

8 Foley a born again christian just like George Bush. Two hypocrites........

Duke, Ney, Scanlon, Abramoff, Gannon, Volz, Bandow, Macaca, Burns, Kidan, Delay.........the list is endless.

When are you going to start being patriots not loyalists and admit to the stench emanating from the Republicscum party? You don't love America, you love power for the sake of power. You are our only enemy. You are ruining what was once a great country. The world sees it and you can't??

AMAZING.....

10 "When are you righties going to admit the stench that emanates from your ranks?"

Asked the guy with no apparent disdain for Ted "Chappaquiddick" Kennedy, Robert "KKK" Byrd, Bill "Sexual Predator" Clinton, John "I Willingly Gave North Vietnamese Propaganda Testimony" Kerry, etc. The list is endless.

You know the difference? Foley's gone, and I haven't seen a single conservative defend him. He's a scumbag. There's no way we would re-elect him, like the Dems did with Studds.

11 Another pearl of civilbehavior wisdom cast before swine:

We lost the "war on terror" the minute we selected oil pimps to the highest offices in the land.

Of course none of you want to sacrifice what it would take to win the "war on terror". That would mean giving up most of your pampered lifestyle. It would mean having to admit that everything you want to have and enjoy is based on the very resource that Bush and his cabal are protecting and has nothing to do with "freedom".

It would mean having to ration and conserve and cut back and stop wasting and think about others. When hell freezes over. No way are you going to do what it takes to win this "war on terror".

WHY? Because it's easier to blame others for your spoiled rotten, wasteful, egregious, greedy, self absorbed lifestyle. It's easier to say it's all their fault while sitting back and eating grapes.

All this talk about freedom while you've chained yourselves to one energy engine. Fools, all of you are fools. Go about your business, for not one of you will comprehend the gravitas. Select few are resigned to the consequences of the impact about to be wreaked upon the ship of fools. Many others are victims of blind masses of evangelical energy barons with her fat and malnourished children fully expectant of a pimped ride. Take a deep breath, your roller coaster ride has already begun. Evolution's steamroller will crush us all.

14 Another pearl of wisdom by civilbehavior, from ThinkProgress:

Yep, this country is screwed. Even if the dems are the lesser poison too much has already happened. There is no way to undo the damage done much less reverse laws that have been instituted that contravene the constitution.

No one wants to admit we are on the way down. No one. I do and have and am simply waiting to unload my equity in the hopes I can before the whole house of cards falls which it will.

I spent too much time in the last two years trying to get the masses off their butts and into the streets. They are a greedy, wasteful, self absorbed bunch that don’t even vote. Kiss this country goodbye.

Posted by: Dan Collins at September 29, 2006 04:37 PM (6+A8I)

23 That doesn't seem like it's legal. If it is legal, it shouldn't be. The idea of popular democratic elections is that the electorate is informed, but in this case, the electorate is uninformed, thanks to a deliberate punting of their political representatives/governers.

I could care less about Foley being gay. What I care about is the hypocrite dirt bag going after young boys. At least McGreevy went after adults (as far as I know). But it only reflects badly on the GOP if they covered for him.

Posted by: Joe at September 29, 2006 06:35 PM (+PS1/)

33 Well, at least Florida doesn't need the State Supreme Court to wash their dicks for them, so they can get away with the switcheroo, like N.J. Of course, if this was a Dem problem, the State Supreme Court of Florida would happily oblige.

To allow a replacements merely weeks before an election makes a mockery of the whole primary system, as evident in NJ.

This brings up a peeve of mine with primaries in general. Its a bit OT, so forgive me, but why in the name of Lyndon LaRouche do state parties have open primaries? Isn't that a slap in the face of party members to allow people not of the party to help decide who the party runs for elective office? If I was a party member (either side) I'd be pissed as heck.

39 Maybe somebody can enlighten me on the difference.

A Republican Reresentative sends some homo-sexually suggestive e-mails to a Congressional page and promptly resigns in disgrace.

A Democratic President gets fellated in the Oval Office a number of times by a female intern young enough to be his daughter, and he shouldn't resign because it's "just about sex"?

How do the Democrat trolls here explain that one?

Posted by: Redhand at September 29, 2006 07:22 PM (7G9b2)

When he picks murder/"suicide" will anyone hear him?

I am a bit suprised by the conservative and "liberal" (they don't have anything to do with actual liberalism, they just call themselves that because thats what Rush Limbaugh told them they were) reaction to this. Can't we all get along and enjoy it when any member of congress gets sent to prison.

I don't care which party they are from or what happens in Nov. (hint, a large internet troll campaign on right of center websites accusing Republicans of child molestation will not make a huge impact on election day, even if you repeat family values 1,600 times) but we should celebrate whenever one of these fucks rots in a cell. He betrayed a trust and now he is going to pay for it (maybe death, maybe not).

It's fair to ask why Kennedy is above the law, why a dead woman in his car doesn't matter, but it shouldn't be used to deny everyone else the pleasure of watching a pervert who used his office to prey on kids lose everything and rot (if he's lucky) in a prison.

Ah, the tale that will be told for generations on down.

A beautiful story of a young lad and his pony.

Oh wait, not that story?

No,

--prolougue--

It's about a boy and a junkyard and an old guy who promises to give him a really shitty car if he works like a slave for him all summer.

And a pony.

Months go by, said boy and old man toil under the hot sun looking to find the "holy pinto".

"It must be here", young wicked spews out.

"Get me a beer and a ham sandwhich and change the fucking channel", said the wise sage.

--post sandwhich--

Young pinto boy goes off into the junkyard of life.

"Who goes there!"

"Tis me, oh pile of junkiness, what sort of wisdom can you impart?'

--ground shaking, knees trembling sort of important stuff--

"You must move on and never try to make the pinto that would be most wicked."

"Or forever be bespoiled."

"OK" said the young man.

And he went on his merry way.

82 "Says Mark Foley to his constituents......

"Just trust us, we're here to protect you"

83 civilbehavior--

I just wanted to establish ab initio that you are a megalomaniacal douchebag, in order to save others the trouble of having to figure out whether you were for real, or one of the regulars mimicking a creepy troll of the unhinged jeremiad type

85 "It's fair to ask why Kennedy is above the law, why a dead woman in his car doesn't matter, but it shouldn't be used to deny everyone else the pleasure of watching a pervert who used his office to prey on kids lose everything and rot (if he's lucky) in a prison."

86 "Dude," there is no "TORTURE issue."

There is no justification for torture.
It is an amoral, cowardly, criminal act.

87 Basic difference:

GOP perv caught (Foley) resigns, knows he can't be reelected.

DEM perv caught (Stubbs, Frank, Clinton, Kennedy, etc. etc. etfrikkincetera)... Democrats reelect them happily.

Yeah, make this an issue, boys...

And weren't you supposed to sweep up Cunningham's House seat after he was convicted? What happened there?

89 "YOU loose"
