Lynn Swann Holds Lead Over "Popular" Gov. Ed Rendell

For years I've been hearing how popular this guy was, how unbeatable.

Not quite unbeatable:

Republican challenger Lynn Swann held a slight lead over incumbent Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell in a statewide poll released today, with a third of registered voters indicating they were open to voting for either man.
Thirty-five percent of those surveyed in the IssuesPA/Pew Poll said they were likely to vote for Swann, the retired Pittsburgh Steelers star and former college football television analyst. Twenty-nine percent said they would probably support Rendell, and 34 percent were considered up for grabs.
Rendell, a former Philadelphia mayor, is running strongest in that city and its suburbs. Swann's greatest support is in the state's south-central and southwestern regions.
Swann's press secretary, Melissa Walters, called the poll "another example of the clear momentum behind Lynn Swann's campaign and the growing support for change and reform in Pennsylvania."

I wasn't sure how Swann would fare, now that the McCain-Feingold Act has banned the use of Stick 'Um in campaigns.

1 A sports reference. Of course, ot would be football but who's picky, right?

Notice a six-point lead is "slight" because the GOP candidate leads. If Rendell were ahead, 6 points would be "nearly insurmountable".

3 I'm from PA, and while I've lived in NYC for most of his term, the folks I talk to back home have never been a huge fan. I know mom hates his guts.

Swann on the other hand, seems to be goin' great guns.

6 I'm from the Philly suburbs, voted for Bush 2x, support the decision to go to war with Iraq, and like Ed Rendell.

If youi recall, Rendell was cochair of the DNC for Gore. Rendell got into a fair amountof trouble for making the rather obvious point that, should the recount show Bush was the winner, that it'd be over. Iirc, he resigned from that post the next day.

He's a smart, candid guy with a load of personality whs can stick a shiv in his opponent.

Which has nothing to do with policy, but it's an electionw we're talking about here.

8 I'm from Pittsburgh, and I can't stand the fat bastard. At the risk of a "I don't know anybody that voted for Nixon" moment, most of the folks I know don't care for him; at best, they voted for him as the least bad candidate. His support is at the other end of the state, though; he's pretty much guaranteed to carry Philly, and that could easily be all he needs.

9 Ya know, at first, as a PA resident, I'd be angry with "Fast Eddie" (due to his propensity to use State Trooper escorts to do upwards of 100MPH (no hyperbole) on his strickly Pittsburgh-Harrisburg-Philadelphia circuit.) I honestly can't remember a news report of that guy being north of I-80, for anything.

Again, I'd be pissed, If Rendell actually did anything for me get be pissed over.

But before I say Swann a ringer, Rendell did get elected, post 9/11, with vocal opposition from the Philadelphia Police and Fire Department. As mayor, he had balanced the city budget on their backs.

11 I live in Philly, am a registered Dem (anyone who lives here HAS to be for practical reasons) and I voted for Rendell last time he ran. Not this time..though I'm positive my vote will be canceled out by the Dem machine, I'm voting against ALL the incumbents that I can, except for Santorum. As corrupt as my local government is, the State government isn't much better.

Also, can anyone name anything of value that Rendell did, as governor?

16 Living in PA, I can agree with MacLachlan when he says it would be a cold day in hell when you would see "Special Ed" north of I-80.

Everybody around here, even Democrats, can't stand him because he's infamous for shunting all state money from the general fund for his buddies in Philadelphia, while roads go to pot in the other sections of the state. We still have roads closed up here in northeast PA that were damaged in the fallout from Hurricane Ivan that PennDOT hasn't gotten around to fixing because they're busy with "other projects" in southeast PA (read: Philadelphia region).

And let's not forget Special Ed raising the Occupational Privilege Tax (a yearly fee for the "privilege" to work) 520% in order to bail out Philadelphia's corrupt school system.

I would gladly vote for Satan over Rendell any day of the week. Now I know how people in southern Illinois feel.

19 Popular in Philly. Nowhere else in the state. This is the jerk who stole 90% of the gasoline tax to prop up the failing public transportation system in Philly, and left the unfinished road work unfinished. This is the jerk who promised property tax relief, and has yet to deliver. This is the jerk who vetoed the anti-voter fraud bill.

Worse, he's an Eagles fan. Nobody likes the Eagles outside Philly. God loves the Steelers.
