John Roberts Calls "Sloppy-Seconds" Remark A "Poor Choice of Words"
— Ace

Whatever. It remains an indication of the hostility of the Bush Administration when someone's mind jumps to such a, errrm, metaphor in the course of asking what would have been a kinda stupid and hostile question anyhow.

I don't think that John Roberts would have asked if Clinton's third choice for AG, Janet Reno, was "sloppy seconds," or "filthy thirds."

Or if, given how late in the process she was chosen, she's the sort of gal who's a "2 at 10 and a 10 at 2."

Or if Reno's nomination was a metaphorical "three bagger" -- one bag over her head, one bag over yours, and one bag over your dog's head so that he can't see what you're doing and won't lose all respect for you.

But just keep in mind that John Roberts was almost chosen as CBSNews' lead national anchor, but lost the job to Bob "Mr. Adrenaline" Schieffer.

So, when Mr. Schieffer retires, and John Roberts is finally considered to have enough "gravitas" to take the helm, we can all ask him if he thinks he was "sloppy seconds" for CBS.

1 Who is John Roberts? What is CBS? Oh, now I remember .... they used to be called a news program. He apologized? Wow .... now he has something to talk about in front of the mirror.

3 I blame Jeff Gannon. Loosing him has clearly altered the balance of power in the press room.

4 Ace,

Not to be a nit-picker, but shouldn't that read "hostility to the Bush Administration"? When I first read your piece, for a moment I thought that the Chief Justice had handed down a truly strange opinion.

"Hmmm ... preposition trouble!"

5 "Scott, now that the President has given Ms. Miers a 'Dirty Sanchez,' will he be dropping a 'Cleveland Steamer' on Alioto if the conservative base starts a 'Golden Shower' of protest?"

6 Note to self: try reading Ace's previous posts as to avoid looking like a pathetic joke thief.

7 When a guy apologizes twice, within one day, for an isolated ill-chosen remark, that should be good enough.

8 "Mr. President, isn't Mr. Alito just sloppy seconds after you '71ed' that ho Harriet?"

9 All joking aside, hoew incredibly unproffessional do you have to be to even think about making this remark? OK, you can say whatever you want on some moronblog, but these guys are supposed to be the highly paid professionals. I mean, it's not just that its rude - its that this little fucktard can't tell the difference between the locker room and the press room. If this is the new standard, I demand that McClellan begin referring to Andrea Mitchel as "that pinched-looking skank ho".

10 What pisses me off the most about the media is not their transparent liberal bias (although that does get my Irish up), it's the complete lack of respect these shit-nosed reporters show any Republican President or his administration. Disagree with the man's policies if you want, but the office deserves some respect; not snarky, loaded questions designed only to embarrass the administration. But Bush doesn't grovel to the media like his predecessor did; so he gets treated like a clique of spoiled rich girls treat the high school gym teacher.

11 Don't try posting a comment to CBS Public Eye. "Unfortunately," their comments section closed less than 6 hours after the original post, despite the fact that teh comments section is suppose to be open for 72 hours after the original posting.

Anyone shocked?

12 UGAdawg: excellent point. It seems that in their devotion to their stance they have forgotten everything about manners and respecting other people. No wonder it's hard to engage in dialogue with them. It is possible to disagree with someone while being respectful and civil. Thanks for pointing that out: can't be emphasized enough.

13 WISHES DO COME TRUE!

ROBERT McCLELLAND:

As far as who Bush puts on the SC, my hope is that it’s the craziest fucker American conservatism has to offer. And I hope that this wacko sets about destroying America. That would give Canadians one more reason to never vote Conservative in this country ever again.

Then the Chimperor nominates craziest fucker American conservatism has to offer.

Scalito’s extreme right wing record …ALITO WOULD OVERTURN ROE V. WADE…ALITO WOULD ALLOW RACE-BASED DISCRIMINATION…ALITO WOULD ALLOW DISABILITY-BASED DISCRIMINATION

Lets hope the Reich Whingers can ram this nomination through the system so that the new Supreme Court of Bush can get to work destroying America before our election next spring.

History will view this as both a failed attempt to control governments and legislation, and a significant step in the downfall of the once powerful Catholic church.--

14 Canadians.

It's the law of averages. To produce one Mark Steyn, tens of thousands of extra Canadians have to live with room temperature IQs. And the rooms are none too warm this time of year.

15 Holy shit, Robert McClelland is still alive? I would have thought he'd have eaten his own head by now.

Still, it's nice to see him... uh... sorta happy. Or something. It's hard to tell with his face all twisted up like that.

16 Didn't he use the term "sloppy seconds" inaccurately anyway? Sloppy seconds refers to the status of the object of a sexual act, not the subject.

Sloppy seconds are when Frat Guy 1 does Girl 1 and then Frat Guy 2 does Girl 1.

In this case, Bush (Frat Guy 1) chose Candidate 1, then chose Candidate 2. Bush is the subject, and the candidates are the objects. If "sloppy seconds" were to apply to Candidate 2, Candidate 2 would have had to have been "done already," right? He would have had to have promiscuously been a supreme court justice for, say, Argentina, and then the US. Or maybe nominated by Clinton, then nominated by Bush. But that's not what happened here.

In other words, the other side can't even get their scandalously vulgar slanders right.....

P.S. I don't think I'll be able to forgive you for making me look up "Cleveland Steamer." Sometimes some forms of edification aren't, er, edifying. But I guessed Nasty Adolf right, so how corruptable can I be?

17 ariminius I took it as the SC nomination was the girl and Alito was frat boy number 2.

18 Perhaps Roberts' boss will take him aside, and "park his leather yacht in John's hair harbor" 'til he gets the message.

Or is that an "unfortunate choice of words"?

And once judge Alito is confirmed to SCOTUS, perhaps we conservatives will be so pleased we'll "ring the front desk for more mayo".

Or not.

Posted by: Shawn at November 01, 2005 05:15 AM (22zDB)

19 Polynikes,

I did think about that as the only way it could have made sense, but the exchange itself contradicts it:

John Roberts: “So, Scott, you said that -- or the President said, repeatedly, that Harriet Miers was the best person for the job. So does that mean that Alito is sloppy seconds, or what?”

Scott McClellan: “Not at all, John.”
