— Ace See if you can follow this:
Charlie Rangel assures us that almost all of those "stuck in Iraq" are black and Hispanic.
John Kerry informs us that people who don't make themselves smart and get educated will be "stuck in Iraq."
Ergo, taken together:
Blacks and Hispanics are stupid and uneducated.

If Kerry showed up at my house trick-treating tonight, I'd give the sorry ass sonofabitch a mouth full of chiclets.

Just for the sake of argument, Ryan, let's pretend you're right. Tell me, though: if he hadn't fucked the joke up, how would it have been told in a manner less offensive to the troops?
And, given that Bush was a better student than he, how might he have told such a joke about Bush and made it, well, funny?

I was almost willing to do that, until he issued that atrocious written statement and held that press conference. Those are not the actions of someone who is contrite about messing up a joke. They are the actions of a man too stubborn to admit he offended people and is too small to apologize.

Actually, given the man's record, I don't know that he wasn't insulting the troops. He seems to have a history if insulting the armed forces, what that whole "winter soldier" thing.
Posted by: Achmed at October 31, 2006 03:42 PM (j4t+e)
How hard would it have been for Kerry to say the following:
“I realize that my remarks could have been interpreted as a criticism
of our brave men and women now serving in Iraq. That was not what I
intended to say, and I apologize if anyone was offended by my lack of
clarity in that statement. But let me be clear about this - George W. Bush made a mistake getting us into Iraq and...blah...blah...blah..."
Such a statement would have been gracious and would have had the effect of settling the controversy. Instead of choosing this path, however, Kerry chose to go on the attack, thus digging himself deeper into a rhetorical hole.

Is that you, macaca? ryan, give it a rest. I would be willing to bet that most people think Kerry was trying to slam Bush. This time. But Kerry has a long and ignominious history of talking shit about the miltary, he has flat accused them of committing atrocities many times.
When you have a history of talking shit about the troops you claim to love, you have no room for error. Capice?
Oh, and you didn't know many students at Harvard who were in the ROTC. It was not even a school sanctioned activity. Harvard students had to go to MIT and do their ROTC service in the MIT program. Hell, they wouldn't even pay MIT for the program because of the military's policy on gays in the military and relied on private, anonymous donors.
You, of all people, should know that.
Posted by: JackStraw at October 31, 2006 03:49 PM (t+mja)
You mean, like John McCain? He might be the first "real" veteran that has demanded that Kerry apologize, but I doubt he will be the last.
i can't imagine how the stress of speaking constantly in front of cameras would flummox me.
And yet, this man deserves to be President, even though he may get "flummoxed" when speaking in public? If that's the case, perhaps he should consider another line of work. Oh...wait...Work? John Kerry hasn't held a real job in his whole life. Guess that means he is already in the only place where that kind of resume can't hurt him.
bush has misspoke plently of times and even though we may joke about it
we know that he loves his country and is doing what he thinks is right,
however wrong he may be. now why can't you be as generous to kerry.
you know he was insulting bush, not the troops.
The funny thing here is that Bush (note the capitalization of the name, college boy) is not usually insulting others when he misspeaks. Insults are all Kerry and his gang have. And they can't even get those right.
Nothing says "loser" better than someone who only has insults to throw at the man who has bettered him in competition.

now back to your regularly scheduled discussion.
Posted by: wiserbud at October 31, 2006 03:58 PM (56ssE)
You mean McCain? Or the American Legion? Or AMVETS (the American Veteran's Association)?
Which of these groups of Veterans were the amchair chickenhaws again? I missed the definition change to "chickenhawk" = "whoever the hell I feel like calling one right now".
Oh, you were just thinking of a small subset of the people criticizing him? So was I. Any answers to why non-armchair non-chickenhawks also were criticizing that jackassery of his?
But yeah, he was insulting Bush's education. Fortunately he got considerably worse grades than Bush, so that makes perfect sense for a plan of attack. Hunh?
Then he botched it, and the words he used insulted the military... whoops. Then rather than apologize and correct he claimed it was just a right-wing attack. Then he decided maybe he needed to clarify, but didn't need to apologize.
Because he's tough, strong, layered, nuanced, and a jackass.
I dunno, maybe you don't apologize when you misspeak and accidentally insult a large group of people. Where I come from that was considered polite and mannerly, but I guess Kerry doesn't need manners.
Posted by: Gekkobear at October 31, 2006 04:02 PM (09QG8)
"He might be the first "real" veteran that has demanded that Kerry apologize, but I doubt he will be the last."
American Legion and AMVETS (commander of each) have demanded apologies for the vets in each organization.
That's a hell of a lot of vets.
Some non-political individuals, but those two groups make the larger point quite well.
Posted by: Gekkobear at October 31, 2006 04:05 PM (09QG8)

About 40 years ago during our last draft. If you were a poor student or had no college defer.( or a person of color )There was a very high chance you were going to Vietnam. After that crap, We as a nation choose to staff our military with the brightest and best ( many young americans join to further thier education) I'm damn proud of the United States Military, Our few bad apples..( and there will always be a few) would be generals in other armies. Mr. Kerry, Come and join the rest of us in 2006.

I still don't think John Kerry is a racist, soldier-hating asshole. And I've never heard of the Military Channel before. From what I've learned, I belive the Vietnam War was something we shouldn't have gotten ourselves involved in. I don't think there was anything wrong with Kerry critisizing the management and nature of the Vietnam War. We lost the war. Has Vietnam been any kind of enemy to ourselves since then? In balance, I would think any reasonable person would conclude in the negative.

Oooo, I could never stay mad at you, you little rascal. Like I said, you have potential. Back off a little on the vitriol and you might actually enjoy yourself here.
I don't think there was anything wrong with Kerry critisizing the management and nature of the Vietnam War. We lost the war.
You may want to do a little more research on Kerry's "criticism." It was just a bit more offensive than criticizing the management and the nature of the war. He flat out accused our soldiers of war crimes and atrocities. And his efforts as an anti-war agitator can be directly linked to our losing that war.
Want to take a guess as to why Kerry is honored in Vietnamese war museums? Here's a hint: It isn't because of his activities while in country, fighting against them.

Based, I would add, largely on the outright lies of people who were either falsely representing themselves as veterans when they had, in fact, never served or those who told outrageous tales of US war atrocities but suspiciously refused to sign legal affidavits affirming their stories for use in prosecuting the supposed perpetrators of these heinous acts.
John Kerry is the most despicable man in politics today.

If you've never even heard of TMC, I can see why. The shortest path toward eliminating this deficit of hard knowledge about Vietnam is to read Nixon's book No More Vietnams.
Its a review of the whole episode from the 1950's up to the date the book was written. It may not change your mind, but its going to present you with historical facts and data you've never seen, most of which were completely ignored by the press and many other authors. That is for sure.
Nixon's book is the most comprehensive "one stop summary" of what went on that I've ever seen to date (and I've read a lot of them). I thought I had a good grasp of the Vietnam totality prior to reading Nixon -- I was wrong.
