OT: It's halloween in the hood. The good thing about living near, but not in the hood is the lower level of fear of crime. The bad part is that you have to spend a ton of money on halloween candy as everyone that lives in the hood feels the same way and comes to your neighborhood to trick or treat. About a hundred kids at my door so far and only two that I recognize. No big deal, but what's up with all of the parents wanting candy, too?

Kerry meant to insult Bush, and I believe that is truly what he meant to do. It's true what he said. He actually fought in Vietnam, and Bush and Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld never served. Now I saw his remarks and I can understand why people would be offended, but he explained today that he botched a joke about Bush, and I think he's telling the truth.

i didn't know rumsfeld was a navy pilot. but being a pilot in the national guard is a world away from serving in vietnam. now that's just common sense. i never voted for bill clinton, and i didn't mention him either. the fact is kerry gets high marks from veterans organizations in terms of his support for veterans. kerry was attacking bush, not the troops. even if you don't like the guy, and i never really liked kerry that much, can't you at least consider the entirety of his remarks on the matter and give him the benefit of the doubt?

i know they had to go to mit, but they were still harvard students. i remember going to mit with a friend of mine and seeing an acquaintance i knew from harvard there. there is a reason for that, and i have nothing to do with it. i had no say in the matter. i have no responsibility for what the harvard administration decided to do many years before i was there.
and for your information, i think harvard is full of stuck-up, self-important, wanna-be bureaucrats. i never saw one instance of intellectual courage while i was there. people there are more concerned with their gpa's and investment banking recruitment chances than the larger world in which we live.

About 40 years ago during our last draft.If you were a poor student or had no college defer.( or a person of color )There was a very high chance you were going to Vietnam. After that crap, We as a nation choose to staff our military with the brightest and best ( many young americans join to further thier education) I'm damn proud of the United States Military, Our few bad apples..( and there will always be a few) would be generals in other armies. I don't think there was anything wrong with Kerry critisizing the management and nature of the Vietnam War. We lost the war.
You may want to do a little more research on Kerry's "criticism." It was just a bit more offensive than criticizing the management and the nature of the war. He flat out accused our soldiers of war crimes and atrocities. And his efforts as an anti-war agitator can be directly linked to our losing that war.
Want to take a guess as to why Kerry is honored in Vietnamese war museums? Here's a hint: It isn't because of his activities while in country, fighting against them.

From what I've learned, I belive the Vietnam War was something we shouldn't have gotten ourselves involved in.
If you've never even heard of TMC, I can see why. The shortest path toward eliminating this deficit of hard knowledge about Vietnam is to read Nixon's book No More Vietnams.
Its a review of the whole episode from the 1950's up to the date the book was written. It may not change your mind, but its going to present you with historical facts and data you've never seen, most of which were completely ignored by the press and many other authors. That is for sure.
Nixon's book is the most comprehensive "one stop summary" of what went on that I've ever seen to date (and I've read a lot of them). I thought I had a good grasp of the Vietnam totality prior to reading Nixon -- I was wrong.

I must admit that in high school and my American history classes in college, we didn't learn much at all about Vietnam. It appears to be an episode in our history that the educational establishment would rather forget. When I say we didn't learn much about Vietnam, that includes the protests against the war and such, lest you use my statement as an attack on American teachers. It was almost a taboo subject, one way or the other. The teachers certainly did not attack the war, and they didn't really teach us about it, either.

To a large extent, this post that has explained some contents very carefully and totally.
