Joe Liberman positioning himself for a VP run with McCain? (chad)

Given his comments on the state of the Democratic Party it sure seems like he isn't interested in staying there anymore:

Well, I say that the Democratic Party changed. The Democratic Party today was not the party it was in 2000. It's not the Bill Clinton-Al Gore party, which was strong internationalists, strong on defense, pro-trade, pro-reform in our domestic government. It's been effectively taken over by a small group on the left of the party that is protectionist, isolationist and basically will --and very, very hyperpartisan. So it pains me. I'm a Democrat who came to the party in the era of President John F. Kennedy. It's a strange turn of the road when I find among the candidates running this year that the one, in my opinion, closest to the Kennedy legacy, the John F. Kennedy legacy, is John S. McCain.

So where does he go? Well he could just hold on to his Senate seat, but if he really wants to angry up the Kos Kiddies he takes a run at VP.

I know most of the people here wouldn't be crazy about such a ticket, but I am an incrementalist. I believe that as long as the country's politics are headed in the direction I like I can live with small gains consistently made. I think that at least in the areas that I believe are most important at the moment, Iraq / Afghanistan and the Supreme Court, a McCain / Lieberman ticket would be pretty solid. I am also realistic enough to know that the Republican Convention would never nominate a McCain / Lieberman ticket.

Of course I would prefer it if McCain chose Dick Cheney but that's never happening so...

Oh and since Ace thinks it would be a good idea for me to link whore who am I to disagree? My blogs are KURU Lounge and Independent Sources

1 Lieberman is liberal on every issue except defense - he's still a big government type. I'm not sure how he benefits McCain, other than showing he can work with both parties. And McCain already has that "honor" sewn up.

Chad, I think you are wrong on the supreme court part of a lieberman ticket.

And if Joe wants John to win, he'll push him to pick a VP who will at least placate the right wing of the party.

3 Bill Clinton wasn't strong on defense. Clinton was none of those things that Lieberman says. And Gore is one of the "hyperpartisans" of which Lieberman complains.

Look, Joe is okay for a Liberal Democrat. But he is still a Liberal Democrat. Big deal that he's right on a couple of issues. A broken watch is still right twice a day.

In other words: Do Not Want

What a huge mistake bringing this guy on the ticket. Talk about alienating your base...

4 Actually he is against affirmative action, he supported prop 209 in CA.

He supports limiting punitive damages in court.

He is pro-education voucher.

He does draw a big strike from me on Gun Control but hopefully DC v. Heller will moot that point, and he is a mixed bag as far as abortion rights, but that isn't a hot button topic for me. It would probably be a deal breaker for others

5 @XBradTC If he was actually nominating Supreme Court picks I would agree with you, but as far as I know he has voted to confirm all President Bush's judicial picks. As I recall that was one of the reasons that the far left was so angry.

Since 2000, he rescinded his support for the proposition, saying that he expressed support "without understand[ing] the intent of Proposition 209", and renounced any support for Proposition 209. In the 2000 campaign, Lieberman assured the black voters, "I have supported affirmative action, I do support affirmative action, and I will support affirmative action because history and current reality make it necessary."

In 2003, Lieberman criticized Bush's affirmative action policy. In 2004, he reiterated his support, "I support affirmative action programs, including in appropriate instances consideration of race and gender in government contracting decisions, when the affirmative action program is designed to remedy the effects of past discrimination."

Lieberman has stated he wants to increase subsidies for women-owned non-profit business, and he voted yes on setting aside 10% of highway funds for minorities and women.

Way Way back I was thinking maybe Newt / Romney or possibly Thompson / Romney although Fred always seemed a little iffy to me.

Lieberman is a tool. This guy rand for VP and the senate in the same year on 2 different platforms. Before that I used to respect Joe for his work in the Senate. In the end he is just a politician who will say or do whatever is necessary to further his agenda. His shtick is getting old.

13 A name I haven't heard, but would make perfect sense for McVain, is Liz Dole.

I think a lot of Tina Turner conservatives are hoping that after being slapped around by McVain all these years, he'll prove that "deep down, he's a good man" and make everything all right by picking a real conservative for VP. I think it's more likely he'll pick an open-borders, anti-Wall Street, global warming true believer like Tim Pawlenty. Lieberman certainly fills the bill in those regards.

Liberman is a non-starter.I remember his shamefull recount behavior in 2000.

The only reason I'll pull the lever for McCain is the alternative is a little worse.

Liberman would effectively make the difference irrelevant.

24 VP should probably be Rob Portman - experienced, sound, a politician, and from Ohio. Joe Lieberman should be Sec. of State under McCain. I can't see him going native like Condi. Announcing that at the Convention (plus Romney at Treasury, Hunter at Defense and Rudy (?) for AG) would present a team that the other side could never match. And maybe bring in Connecticut.

(You know what's scary? The Democrats really do seem to be running their primary on the basis of which candidate would be best to star in an original Lifetime network movie -- the brave woman starting a new life on her own, or the Magic Black Guy.)

I have a hunch the next president (whoever it is) will be only a one-termer, which would mitigate the McCain age factor somewhat. But I'm still not crazy about Lieberman as either his running mate or his veep.

Lieberman? Seriously? Liberal as the day is long - his one exception, as has been stated, being defense policy in the Middle East.

And might it be a good idea for McCain to get at least some votes from the base (and I use base very loosely since it seems more and more that McCain's base encompasses the undecided middle that might just play video games on election night)? I don't see how Lieberman entices any conservatives to give money and endorse a McCain ticket. The ME war policy is one of the few issues where McCain is strong. Lieberman is superfluous.

Now, if McCain is looking for the centrist-liberal vote and thinks he can gain more liberals than he will lose conservatives, then maybe that tack is sound... for McCain - not for the GOP.

I'm still holding out for Bugs Bunny. Or Bonzo.

I've been predicting McCain/Lieberman since Feb 2006.

As a dyed in the wool right wing nutcase..I voted for Jessie Helms...I can actually live with Lieberman. He's a fan of big government...but is fairly pragmatic. I.E. He wouldn't trow out our existing health care system..but would certainly advocate some 'improvements'.

The so called "Reagan Democrats" are probably in reality "Roosevelt Democrats". If one wants to split the Democratic party...one needs to appeal to "Roosevelt Democrats". Joe Lieberman is a Roosevelt Democrat and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that that a Roosevelt Democrat can beat a "MoveOn Democrat" hands down in a General Election.

Obama is a "MoveOn" type democrat...if he is the Democratic Nominee than Lieberman would be a good choice for the ticket.
