— Ace Damn, I was looking for this clip for days.
I don't know how often James Brown did this. I know it's often-parodied (Paul Schaffer spoofed it on Letterman), but maybe he just did it once.
Still, it's the stuff of show-business legend.
I liked his claim of being "The Hardest-Workin' Man In Show-Business." Putting the emphasis on hard work, not natural talent. Nice. Although, of course, he had an awful lot of talent, too.
He helped that claim along with this stunt, which is so cheesy it's perfect. The silliness starts at 4:30.
The clip shows helpful bandmates trying desperately to lead James Brown off the stage -- apparently concerned for his health, as he was giving "too much show" for one man's constitution to handle -- and the indefatigable Brown refusing their medical intervention, determined to give just a little more, no matter what effect it might have upon his very life.
Legendary.

I also got to do the Lighting for Weird Al's parody of the song, Living with a Hernia.
Same hotel, same stage.

Also recently re-uploaded to YouTube (after having been removed a while back) is JB's performance of Night Train from that same 1964 show.
I can't watch that one without (a) grinning and cackling like a retard out of sheer joy and amazement, and (b) recalling Howard Stern's (or was it Stuttering John's) question to JB many years back, about whether he ever worried about slamming his testicles against the floor when he did the splits.

James Brown was a genius - one song, eight words and showmanship.
Don't make 'em like that any more.

Both "Night Train" and "Please" come from the TAMI show. Story surrounding is that Brown was extremely pissed that he wsn't the closer, that the Rolling Stones would come on after him. Supposedly he vowed "No one follows James Brown!" and went out and gave that performance.
Many years later one of the Stones was interviewed about their biggest mistakes/regrets. He said it was following James Brows on the TAMI show.

I know I'm late to the party, but this schtick was parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic in the video for "Living with a Hernia."
It was great. I mean, Yankovic was dressed like Brown during the whole thing. During parts, he's struggling with bowling and other everyday activities On stage, he collapses, when his bandmates tried to usher him off.
It worked so beautifully.
