— DrewM And there it is.
You know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; its about the people of this District. It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.
Its not in the cards for me to be your representative, but I strongly believe Bill is the only candidate who can build upon John McHugh's lasting legacy in the U.S. Congress. John and I worked together on the expansion of Fort Drum and I know how important that base is to the economy of this region. I am confident that Bill will be able to provide the leadership and continuity of support to Drum Country just as John did during his tenure in Congress.
In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.
Please join me in voting for Bill Owens on Tuesday. To address the tough challenges ahead, we must rise above partisanship and politics and work together. There's too much at stake in this election to do otherwise.
I really hope someone is going to primary her next year for her Assembly seat.
Added: Scozzafava's hissy fit is understandable on two levels, she's pissed at Hoffman and she does agree with Owens more. So on a human level I get it.
What it is not is forgivable. Someone needs to run against her for her Assembly seat and failing that, support should be given to her Democratic challenger. Trust me on this, one more or less Republican of any stripe is of no consequence there. Right now it's 110 Democrats and 40 Republicans. As long as NYC remains part of NY State, that's not changing.
Thanks to @jaketapper for the heads up, even if he is a Phillies fan.

I will forgive newt, but come on man, you backed a left of democrats candidate, went to the mat for her calling Hoffman a carpet bagger, and now she would rather see the democrat win over the conservative. How could you have such bad judgement?
This woman is a hack. Thank god she didn't win this election. I think we need to put this general "is it good for a third party....what does it portend for the...." arguments. Let's look at this specific instance and say with certainty that this women would have made a terrrible Republican congresswomen.

Oh man, i want to laugh, but, damn. How much you want to bet Frum writes a Daily Beast article excoriating the evil "purists" who, through their actions, forced this fine upstanding Republican to endorse the Democrat. "Moderates" are like an insecure, needy girlfriend. They whine and threaten to leave if you don't call them every hour and live your life for their every whim, pretty sick of 'em.
honestly who cares about David Frum. This is the same guy who wrote an article 10 days ago mocking the right for saying Hoffman "had a chance to win". Now here we are, the republican dropped out and endorsed the Dem, and Hoffman with a chance to win the election. He is a joke. I have no problem with moderates in the Republican party, but they need to recognize they are the minority in the party and therefore do not get to decide its direction.
If he wanted to really help the party, which i do not think he does. He would use his influence of moderates(which i doubt exists) to push for republicans in the northeast where you have to be moderate to win. And he should then let the conservatives try to win in areas where conservatives win.
He will sit there and tell us that we can't run conservatives in conservative districts, but when we tell him that he can't run moderates in conservative districts, we are called crazy and fringe.
He doesn't want to help the party, he wants to ingratiate himself to the cocktail party crowd and keep his job as a "house republican" on the NYT

You think, "Boy if Newt were here, what a piece of my mind I would give him!" And then you realize that if he doesn't know what he should do or say now you wouldn't be able to convince him if you talked all day. So, the ball is in Newt's court. If he wants forgiveness he'll have to beg for it in terms that make it clear that he knows how wrong he has been. The same goes for all those party officials who decided she was a republican who could win. They are the real threat to the republican party, not the third party candidates.

There is only one type of moderate Republican that I will ever give the time of day to.
"Folks, I am a Republican. I do not believe that opposing gay marriage and abortion rights is productive to the political atmosphere in this country. These issues are just too divisive to be a litmus test of the Republican party. But, make no mistake about it, while I do not agree that these positions should define the Republican party, I absolutely believe that the tax and spend policies of the Democratic party will lead to the destruction of the economy of the United States as we now know it. While there are issues that may differ in importance based on regional and local politics, there is no member of the Republican party who can expect the support of the party faithful while abandoning the core fiscal principals that have made this Nation great. It is time to set aside our smaller differences, and unite behind the things that we absolutely cannot retreat on, ever. If we do, we have failed our supporters, and ultimately failed those who came before us and made the United States what it was prior to the abandonment of sound fiscal policy to tax and spend economic suicide."

And... the mask comes off once Halloween is over.
Anyone with an ounce of grey matter told anyone who was willing to listen this bitch was a lefty in a RINO's coat. But nooooooooooo! We have to be open to the big tent philosophy of party building, don't we. We're not allowed to build the party around a core set of values, ideals, and virtues, are we?
All the Newt and David Frum types have accomplished is prove once again how utterly wrong they are on anything to do with the running of this party. It was only the efforts of dedicated, scrupulous Conservative Republicans that have unmasked this hog whose only future political hopes are to run as an openly Dem candidate.
A new day is dawning. Wake up and smell the coffee you spineless squishes.

it is long past time for the grassroots to kick them out, and start over, building up a replacement that can proudly carry the name GOP once again.
as a start, not a dime to any general party organization, but only to targeted individuals who pass muster and inspection, as well as PAC's that are oriented to the same goals. if all else fails, there is always the NRA-ILA, who will support conservatives of both parties.

Whichever clown(s) was/were responsible for allowing this scuzzypaloozer to run with an R in front of her name should be tied up in burlap and thrown back into the leftist sewer from which they sprung.
As for party affiliation, an R that does not embrace the spirit of this country and doggedly pursue the rights of the individual according to the foundational principles of this country might as well be a French Socialist or Obama voter.
At this point, it's damn near impossible to find an NY party republican - or any Nor' East republican for that matter, that appears to be anything other than another excuse for National Democrat.

Someone upthread said Beck's rating were up last week. Well he had pretty good shows but the one on friday with bolton and the british lord fell flat. they never really said anything of import. The "lord" seemed more worried about America than Bolton. Bolton seemed afraid to say anything controversial and "the lord" said a lot of controversial stuff which fell flat when Bolton said it wasn't so. Not so sure I'm going to keep watching Beck. somehow feel he is part of the administration, not against it. they are such a slick administration, they make it so you don't know who you can trust. If what Beck is saying is true, people should be angry. Instead he is making them accept all of this, like training them to just be complacent. It's a little frightening to watch no one care to stand up for the country.

Scooz was gonna the Anybody But The Democrat Vote. That's it.
Scooz was not going to get any 'progressive' votes, those are all going to Owens. Scooz's moderate support will be split 60/40 to Owens and Hoffman, respectively.
But the loyal (R) voters, by a margin of 3-1, will go to Hoffman. The rest will go to Scooz because they're too stupid or ignorant to realize she dropped out of the race and will still pull the lever for the (R).
This is still Hoffman's election to lose.

I just tried to contact our former Speaker, but only got this message:
Newtered Gangreneich won't be available to help the Republican cause in New York for the foreseeable future. He has lost interest in NY-23 and has thrown his full support behind Manuel Zelaya, the great moderate Republican running for the Presidency of Honduras, and will be out of the country for a while. Any tin foil you could send would help, as the great Republican Zelaya has a need for more tin foil than is currently available in Honduras (due to those dastardly Israelis and their mind rays). Send your tin foil to:
Great Republican Manuel Zelaya
Tin Foil Alley, Brazilian Embassy Basement, Honduras
And remember, just because you don't agree with Zelaya on 99% of the issues doesn't mean that he isn't a great Republican, dedicated to conservative values. He signed a pledge (on tin foil, if you can believe that).

I think that's a low bar, but pretty much essential.
It's amazing how tone-deaf the so-called conservative intellectuals are. People like Brooks and Noonan and Parker and to some extent Newt were shocked, shocked!, that Obama turned out to be what we all knew he was.
From and Newt and their ilk are shocked, shocked!, that Scozzafava is exactly who we said she was. There isn't much use for a political elite that is less prescient than the rank-and-file.

We're now at a year away from the pivotal 2010 elections that could be a clear referendum on the 111th Congress and President I Won so STFU.
Conversing and blogging is all well and good but what now? Where do we go from here? What's the call to action? Online petitions? The formation of a true conservative PAC that will directly rebuke the RNC that financially backs and endorses *RINOs*?

Yeah, that's called the blind leading the blind, where I'm from.
And this is why we lose at the polls...
No, we lose at the polls because 'true conservatives' are too damn quick to not vote in protest. We win when we push for the most conservative person in the primary and then vote for the Republican). This case is special in that there was no primary.
I've pulled most of my extended family into voting Republican. That's 12 former D votes in MI. They're 75-25 conservatives but had been voting D since that's what they had been doing their entire life.
How about putting your snark into something useful?

I think we keep supporting the good conservative candidates. Like Marco Rubio. I've been out of work for way too long, but if enough of us kick people like him $25 (or even less), it will make a huge difference. Like it has for Doug Hoffman.
And we keep letting the "official" party organizations know what we are doing, that they don't get one thin dime until they come around.
I sign a lot of online petitions, but I suspect they don't make a rat's ass worth of difference.
Posted by: Peaches at November 01, 2009 11:59 AM (9Wv2j)
I think it's pretty simple. Set up a conservative PAC, although there could be quite a battle there on what core beliefs are. But assuming that can be done with a sole focus on limited government and fiscal responsibility. Candidates that toe that line get the money, those that don't, don't.
Make sure that everyone is aware of it and instead of donating to the RNC, people send their money to the conservative PAC. The RNC is full of RINO dipshits anyway, so it's not like I will ever give them another dime to begin with.
As a matter of fact, let's just get out ahead of the discussion and call the PAC Americans for Conservative Fiscal Policy. No social issues, just conservative economics. Tell the Republican establishment to fuck off, if we feel a Republican candidate shares our beliefs, we'll contribute. If not, go pound salt assholes.
I understand that you don't feel sound fiscal policy is a Republican core belief, so I don't picture you getting on board with the idea.

Sarah Palin has already responded - via Facebook:
Despite what candidate Chris Daggett is claiming, I have never contacted him or his campaign. I have never asked him to drop out of the NJ Governors race. Now, if a politician is going to play loose with facts like this, the electorate needs to know it.

Also, There is no senate race in NM next year so, my cash is going to Rubio FL for the primary, Toomey PA and whoever runs against Reid NV.
NM's 2nd district will go back to red and will be well funded, my district the 3rd will go blue no matter what, so my cash is going to the 1st district Republican.
See my reasoning there.

My job also somewhat thwarts that as I cannot really be a active partisan when the wrong side is in power in my state. Which they are, for the next year only hopefully. Not that I'm a big deal, but big enough in my industry that I cannot risk hurting my co-workers. Which is why I like the PAC idea, financially support candidates who stop the fiscal insanity.
With a clear message about what the intent is, what the beliefs are, and see if folks will donate. And yes, part of the message is that the RNC is a bunch of dipshits who can no longer be trusted with money, and even more so, decision making. People need to know that the game has changed, perhaps forever. If the social conservatives don't want to have anything to do with it, that's their choice. A) She'll have to and B) it should be easy for her. She ran unopposed for her 122nd Assembly seat in 2008. She's bound to have to deal with an R primary and lose and switching will allow her to keep the incumbancy label. Here in Upstate NY a lot of Dems run their campaign under the guise of no party affiliation, especially in R dominated districts.

No, I assure you I am really mentally fine. But what you had in New York was a complete cluster you know what. A local Republican establishment with a country club type attitude. A candidate (Scozzafava) with a complete inability to understand the tides of the race. And Hoffman hit lightning in the bottle.
Now, there are lessons to be learned here. You can't be a Republican in the modern era that is more left than the democrat. You can not be an organization that is tone deaf to the impact blogs, the internet, talk radio and the like have on movement conservatives. You can't, as a Republican, go against every core principal of the conservative legs that support the party.
But, you also can't read into one isolated incident more than its an isolated incident. If you are a Republican candidate and you learn from the Scozzafava incident that you have to be at least a fiscal conservative, or at least a conservative on some issues, in a blue state or a blue district, you don't have a Scozzafava situation.
Also, every congressional district is its own animal. What works in one does not always work in another.
Thus, I merely caution against viewing this as some national trend. One win does not a trend make. And, the lesson that can be learned from it can prevent the situation from arising again.

I don't see fire and a sense of urgency in the leadership of this party anymore. Seems they are quite comfortable being spineless while other folks do the wet-work for them.

Exactly, no offense to muslims around here but I think they are a disease that needs to be stopped. Having said that, how could I say that God is critical to my party when I think someone else's God wants to have them cut my head off. I hate hypocrites, and that would make me a hypocrite to the highest degree. Can't have it.

Scozzafava has encouraged her supporters to vote for Owens...
I don't think so.
The only thing I can find that says that is a NY Daily News article that says but what they link to as proof is the Watertown paper that had endorsed her but now is endorsing Owens, not that she did.
Apparently her husband did endorse Owens though.

So you think the local paper told a baldfaced lie that they would easily be caught out on?
How about contacting Dede's office and asking for a comment on the story and the paper's switching to the openly Dem candidate?

"So you think the local paper told a baldfaced lie that they would easily be caught out on?"
Why not? The national papers do it all the time. And they'll deal with it the same way, in a correction on page B-22.

"You have the mentality that it is quite alright to kill millions of babies out of "convenience".
And you don't think this same mentality won't affect healthcare and being okay with "death panels" and rationing? Or won't affect Cap and Trade and 'saving the world from global warming' at the expense of destroying people's lives through economics (high taxes, high energy rates, totalitarian control of life, etc)?
"
I am pro-choice, however that does not mean I am pro-abortion... I don't believe in late term or partial birth abortion, its a person and should be given up to adoption. But during the very stages, I think that serious hard decision should be up to the family.. and that decision should be respected... does this mean I think there should be a planned parenthood office in every neighborhood encouraging abortions... absolutely not. I guess it all depends on when one considers a life a life.
as for the rationing with "death panels"... I'm not sure where the connection is b/w this and the abortion issue... I absolutely am against any government run heathcare in any form... it would open the door to socialized care that I do not want opened.. and I don't even want that door cracked open even for a bit mainly b/c it would drive so many doctors out of praictice, and then yes it would lead to rationing for those people who need help the most and would be dependent on some beaurcat in DC doling out rationed care.
as for cap-n-trade, again, I don't see the connection b/w this and abortion.. I have huge issues agn cap-n-trade mainly b/c it would cause so much pain to busienesses and so many higher bills for americans... it does no good... and top of that .. I don't want a secondary market of derivatives for carbon taxes being handled by a corrupt wall st. and corrupt dc

If you don't believe in fiscal conservatism, you are not a conservative, period. I used to think that meant you weren't a Republican, but that shit is right out the window these days.
And I would generally agree with you, although I think George Bush really tested my belief in that as well. But sometimes around here I think we forget that there is a difference between ideology and being a political party. As a conservative, I would prefer that my candidates reflect my ideology, low taxes, pro-life, strong defense, small government, promotion of individual freedom.
But political parties exist to win elections. That may be good. That may be bad. Whether it is good or bad is largely irrelevant because it is what it is.
Ultimately, you decide whether you are a conservative or a Republican, or a conservative Republican or a whatever Republican or just a conservative. Just a reminder, parties and ideologies do not always have the same goal. It is the goal of the ideological advocate to win the argument. It is the goal of the political party to gain and maintain political power. At times, the 2 goals merge (see, e.g. Reagan in 1980). Sometimes, they do not.
Thus, I am not at a point where I want to say NY-23 is a turning point for the conservative movement. Just too many odd things happened at the same time. I could be wrong. But, as I remind my own children of (and myself, frequently) sometimes patience and perspective are wonderful attributes to have.

"the war to rid the conservative movement of the social issues."
One of our own breed of handwringing squishes wrote that upthread.
Rid the Conservative movement of social issues?
Why?
So we can be liberals with better discipline over our spending habits?
Is that all there is? Are those my two choices?
Shall I be a social liberal who is also a profligate spender, or shall I be a social liberal who occasionally and halfheartedly tries to balance the national checkbook?
You don't care about social issues. Yet you constantly campaign against those who do, even when they agree with you on strictly fiscal questions-which you say are the critical ones. Right.

The place to win on social issues is not in national elections. You want to stop abortions, make it a state issue.
I would doubt my beliefs are that different than yours, I just think we need to prioritize the battles and if we don't stop this fiscal madness, all the rest of the shit isn't going to matter a hill of beans.

I can't believe how many of you can't see the direct connection between our loss of traditional social values and the expansion of government.
Every social value that gets marginalized or disappears translates into more welfare, a social program, more taxes.
Some of you, dear morons, have the idea of "Well, people should be able to live however they want; it doesn't effect my life." But it does, morons. You pay for it, eventually.
You pay for single moms. You pay for abortions. You support children because their dad isn't around. You pay for 'raising awareness' for homosexual rights in schools. You pay for sex-change operations. Just like you pay for anti-smoking propaganda, btw.
You will end up paying for all of it, in some way or another. Now imagine what taxes and government would be like if we didn't pay for all these ridiculous things made prevalent by the Leftists.

Conservatism is supposed to be about individualism. Well, stop thinking we need some PAC or some kind of organization in order to make a difference. We don't. The individual makes the difference.
Agreed with that statement but...Organizaion does help to demonstrate the strength and cohesion of your movement. Look at the tea parties--w/out organization and social networkng sites it would not merely be the succcess it has been. Individuals and individualism is great. Yeah, that pretty much boils down my point above.
We've been browbeaten into accepting abortion and single moms. I mean, what difference does it make to me a some 18 year old girl in Boston wants to have a few abortions or pump out a few bastards?
I pay for it, that's how it impacts my life. So a conservative, or a even a reasonable person, does not need to consider the moral implications of human genocide or having children out of wedlock. All one needs to realize how the Leftists have created these abominations as a way to dig into your wallet.

It's not that some of us, okay I should only speak for myself here, it's not that I don't see it, it's that I think we have to tread very carefully in how we address those issues.
If I'm talking to a fence-sitter, I'm going to hit the key points: at the end of the day do you think the gov't can be your solution. Do you think it would be wise if we have the equivalent of the BMV or the Post Office running our health care? Do you think it's wise that each household in the US could poetntially pay $3,000 more by way of energy bills or consumer goods because therethere has been a one percent increase in global temperatures that may or may not be created by man?
To me, making it about the ineffectiveness of the gov't is more sound than saying, oh that hillbilly Tiffany just had another kid and you're going to be paying for it. Or explaining to people that the Constitution is in fact a document of liberation rather than the negative document claimed it be, is probably more persuasive than saying yeah those there were three trannies in jail that want a sex change operation on your dime, can you believe that??
I *think* it's about making it all about the bigger picture: gov't intrusion and the nanny state and less about those that choose a different lifestyle from us. Again I'm not saying to dismiss your points--they're all valid and mostly true.
But it's not wise to claim we want respect as inviduals when we rip on those individuals that may make different choices than we do.

The only sensible people in the country are the Conservatives, and the rest of the nation is made up of idiots and loons. (Independents and Democrats)
My long experience in dealing with humans has led me to one specific conclusions. Some people simply CANNOT learn except by the HARD way.
The Leftist constituency is just plain nuts stupid, and they are incapable of learning. The independents are capable of learning, but only after they've had their head pounded into the dirt by pain and misery.
If we let the leftest loons do what they've been trying to do, it will soon be apparent to the independents which side they should have been on.
This might very well happen regardless of whatever we can do to stop it. I hope not, but everyone needs to be prepared for a sudden drop...

My evidence: the Republicans are afraid to even bring it up. John McCain, during his campaign, made it clear he fell for the Democrat B.S. when he said, "As president, I don't want to tell a soldier in our military that his family has to go back their own country."
Eric Holder is right; we are a nation of cowards. We pussed out on social issues that are necessary for the survival of our country.

The libs say "so you want to go back to "bakc alley abortions", do you want the poor to have no alternative? We have to have abortions because otherwise women will die."
I really hate that argument. If, tomorrow, Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortions would neither become legal or illegal. Instead, the right to regulate abortions would default back to the individual states. Thus, states like New York and Vermont, for example, would probably have abortion if Roe was overturned much like you have it today. Other states would impose strict restrictions. A fair number of states would have a mix, some regulations more restrictive that what the Supreme Court allows but not an outright ban. The significant difference would be that the states, and not 9 unelected officials, would make the decision. Which is how it should be.

Death of a thousand cuts though lacy. Why should I pardon the cash for pre-op trannys program, even if it isn't on the scale of say, Cap and Tax? It's still a scurrilous misuse and theft of our tax dollars. I have had enough, it's my money. If I wanted a pre-op tranny paid for with my cash, I'd call Blazer up.(Yeah it isn't wednesday night yet, but it was an easy flame and I took it)

It ought to be a "Are you out of your fucking mind ?" thing. The fact that it is even suggested indicates our system is SERIOUSLY out of whack.
I've read just this week that scientists now think they can do "Womb Transplants."
If we get socialized medicine, somehow I think transgender prisoners will be moved to the front of the line just to encourage such lunacy.
The left seems to have a VERY strong attachment to the sick and perverse.

I believe most of the Founders were dead set against political parties. As they knew that they would lead people to put "party over principle". They were right.
Yet many of the founders (Adams, Jefferson, etc.) belonged to parties. As humans, we often have aspirational beliefs and reality actions.

I have this discussion all the time. (Morality based laws.) I always respond the same way. ALL laws are legislated morality. The only question left to be decided is Who's?
The Europeans have figured out a way to make the annoying Christian moralists stop forcing their morality on them. They've decided to let the Muslims do it instead.

Because cap/tax will undoubtedly affect every single one of us. When you make the pre-op/prison argument, you get stupid stares. Pepole are smart enough to know those case, asinine as they are, are still rare and will only impact people on a state level. For you know, the what, three times that even comes up?
We just have to see the bigger picture. So speaking of...
If we all had three things (and only three) we needed out of the Republican Conservative party, what would they be? (I guarantee we're all much closer on tihs than we think we are--we're getting caught up on minutia. Relevant minutia I might add-but we need to think BIG PICTURE).

Here are my three:
1. A deep respect for the dignity of every individual. We aren't merely members of a class. We aren't a collective. We are each individuals with separate goals and dreams and aspirations.
2. A deep understanding that a leader must have wisdom. Wisdom is the sum of both book knowledge and the experiences of the past. Don't go flying into the latest flashy theory to be your salvation. History should be your guide.
3. A deep commitment to a financially prudent lifestyle, and its application to government. No big spending schemes. Don't go deeply into debt. Live on less than you make. Shop for bargains.

She might not have an encyclopedia of political knowledge in that brain, but she knows what she knows and more importantly she knows what she doesn't know and when to seek advice.
Who would you rather have as president a Gore or Obama who doesn't know when to ask for help or a Reagan, B. Clinton or Palin who knows their limits? Note: I'm not equating B. Clinton politically to the other two, but he did know how to lead.

I'd have to go back and check statements made during that era to find out which founders spoke out against Parties and warned of their dangers.
Yeah, I have sen that too. Actually, I think it was Washington. Of course, Washingotn understood he had the first Presidency wrapped up. So, it is always easy to be virtuious (spelling, I know) when you are getting what you want. That is why my 16 year old daughter loves me when I let her have the car.
And, I agree, that one does tend to lose one's moral fiber when political parties get involved. However, they are a way of life. Life involves a series of trade offs. The challenge is to recognize what trade offs are acceptable and what are not. Sadly, it seems any trade off to retain political power is acceptable to some.

As for Dede... yeah another RINO who was really a beard for the Dems...
Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., was among those who urged Dierdre K. Scozzafava to endorse Democratic congressional candidate William L. Owens, the senator's spokesman said Saturday. The spokesman, Maxwell Young, said the senator called a number of north country political leaders after Ms. Scozzafava suspended her campaign and had more than one conversation with the Republican candidate ahead of her announcement. He said the senator also called other Democratic leaders about the situation, including White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.[snip] A Democratic source said that Scozzafava and her husband, Ronald P. McDougall, met with U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, and state Democratic Committee Chairwoman June F. O'Neill at a restaurant in Gouverneur on Saturday afternoon to discuss the endorsement. http://tinyurl.com/ylmv9hv

Statement from Doug Hoffman Campaign:
Senior Communications Advisor Rob Ryan said, "This afternoon Dede Scozzafava betrayed the GOP. She endorsed a Pelosi Democrat who will spend more, tax more, and push the liberal agenda that is dragging down this nation. Doug Hoffman represents the revolution that is taking place against high taxes. Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are desperate. They are throwing everything they have at us but we're fighting back. Aww, F it. I just can't sock this one. From now on when I want to call someone the seaward, I'll just call them a "Scozzafava".
As someone who used to be a D, these GOPer's who want to get along with the Dems are just GOPer's that got their heads patted by the Dems when they were in power. These are the so called "fiscal" conservatives that are lionized as being fiscally responsible when they vote for the Dems taxe increases while crowing that they kept government spending in check by raising it only 15% this year! Given the choice, I'd rather have a D as my congressman than a squishy R.
At least with the D I can have a rubber out when they decide to screw me while the squish R will do it bareback when I'm not looking.

I think Sarah Palin has done a lot of interesting things via twitter and facebook, however, I do not think she is trying to resurrect the Republican Party. I think she saw close up and personal that it is just as much of a sewer as the democratic party except the Republicans have a "holier than thou" attitude and the dems put everything they are doing in plain sight and challenge you to challenge them, no one does. If Beck can only get ten people to come forward for his "refounding project" then this country is in more trouble than any of us can imagine.

Politico:
Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) Met Secretly With Scozzfava
Even though she had already spoken to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Scozzafava was apparently rattled and needed some face-to-race reassurance that backing a Democrat was a good idea, according to people familiar with the situation.
Plus her cellphone voice mailbox was overloaded with Democratic messages and stopped taking incoming calls. Scozzafava left the meeting more relaxed and clearly leaning towards endorsing Owens over Conservative Party hopeful Doug Hoffman, a person familiar with the exchange told me.

What a sad bunch of pitiful anonymous commenters. Spouting your "Pure Conservative" trash from the safety of your couches.
Yes, I disagree with what Newt did, but which of you has done one, one-million of what this man has to advance conservatism in America? Hmmmmm? Newt managed to get passed Welfare Reform that even Reagan couldn't manage. He stopped Clinton dead in his tracks and kept him from pulling the kind of crap that Obama is doing.
You miserable sacks of crap. One mistake and suddenly the man who pretty much defined conservatism for a couple of decades is a RINO, is a "sellout." He made a decision that you, in your no-accomplishing-a-damn-thing-for-conservatism-in-America living rooms disagree with and now you're ready to throw him under the bus.
Pitiful. Sad. Rather be "right" then actually accomplish anything in America. Rather "stick to your principles" and watch American Soldiers die in Afghanistan then bend and get a majority against Obama.
Your kind, the Perot kind, got us eight years of Clinton. Good thing a man like Newt was there to defend America against Clinton while you safely sat at home wallowing in your smug Pure Conservative ideals.

The logic of inclusiveness seems to be that conservatives should accept and support moderates as Republicans in purplish parts of the country because unaffiliated centrist-minded voters may gravitate to them precisely because they are moderate and because those voters are fearful or put off by conservatives.
I prefer to take the approach that if conservatives stay true to their values and insist that Republican candidates espouse conservative views and policies, centrist voters will gravitate toward those candidates.
Why should we dilute the GOP with RINOs who are effectively liberals? What does that gain us in the long term or even in the medium term? I believe that there are a lot of people who voted for Obama who now regret what they did and are looking for an alternative. We--i.e., conservatives--should give them that alternative. To do so we must be clear and unequivocal about what we are and what we believe in. Maybe, just maybe, they'll gravitate to us. They may not like everything we have to offer but they may like enough of what we have to offer to vote for conservative candidates.
In the past Republicans like Gingrich and McCain have taken the approach that conservatism is repellent to a majority of a voters and have therefore offered up Republican candidates who are not only not conservatives but are not really Republcians either. In other words they do not have any confidence in conservatism. Maybe it's time to explore the possibility that what centrist voters find repellant about Republicans is that they are Republicans. Being conservative may not be the cause of the repulsion centrist voters feel. They can't stand many Republicans because so many Republican officer holders are mere politicians, unprincipled jerks.

Blazer in 539 makes my point for me (as attempted in 540). Gingrich and the Republicans were able to stop Clinton and enact legislation supported by conservatives precisely because that legislation was conservative and appealed to a majority of voters (or else it wouldn't have been enacted).

I guess what I'm saying is that candidates who run as Republicans should actually be Republicans and not Republicans in name only. Is that too much to ask or expect? Of course this means taking a certain ideological stance on a range of issues, a stance that I hope and trust would be regarded as conservative. This is not a question of enforcing ideologically extremist purity. It is merely a case of being what you are and what you claim to be and not something else which is inimical to being a Republican. Either you're a Republican or you're not. Presumably this determination is made by comparing what you are to the party platform. And if the party platform is too liberal/Democrat in its cast than we should just say the jig is up and call ourselves Democrats.

Posted by: mghorning at November 01, 2009 05:34 PM (o6bej)
What is the GOP platform, anyway? Do we currently have one? Is it spelled out clearly, is it well-defined? Do Gingrich and McCain and other like-minded Republicans espouse the platform? Or are they cafeteria Republicans, supporting the planks of the platform they like and ignoring the planks they don't like?
Posted by: Roughcoat at November 01, 2009 05:34 PM (CZf93)
apparently he was on Meet the depressed today and Dylan Ratigan was horrified by him pushing this legislation. Ratigan did make a good point tonight though, he did say as long as everyone keeps focuisng in on the dem/republican stuff no one is really looking at the economy. He's been a financial writer for over 15 years so his foray to huff po is his first where he is dealing with politics too. He kept asking tonight who is more likely to vote with the people's wishes. He was coming to the conclusion that we often come to, no one.

Well, that would seem to be an argument for both parties to enforce ideological purity in their respective ranks. And by ideological purity I mean hammering out a party platform, which becomes your ideology--if only for an election cycle--and then nominating and running candidates who will support the platform. As things now stand nobody knows what the hell either party stands for. Both parties are all over the place on what they say they are. Which gives the office holders of both parties plenty of latitude to do whatever they want to do and not vote according to the wishes of the people who elected them.

Y-not: Thanks. I'll read it. What do you think of it? Is it a conservative platform?
It seems to me that writing the party platform is the first place conservatives should get involved. Instead of first looking around for candidates who seem to have the right stuff, we should first write the platform and then find people who are willing to run as Republicans who will support their party's platform.

I confess I didn't read the party platform and never got involved in trying to influence what it said. I stupidly believed that if someone ran for office as a Republican he was actually--a Republican. And I had an idea in my head of what it meant to be a Republican--it meant that you were more or less conservative. What a maroon I've been. McCain with his obnoxious stance on immigration knocked the scales from my eyes. From now on I'm going to try to get involved in GOP internal politics through the process of writing the party platform. The platform comes first, the people chosen to run as Republicans second.

Posted by: curious at November 01, 2009 06:21 PM (p302b)
It isn't? How else do you establish what the party stands for? Or what a candidate stands for?
I thought that a platform would serve the same purpose as the Constitution. You put it in writing and everyone figuratively signs off on it. Then, if a candidate goes rogue, you show them the platform and say: hey, you signed off on it. You're not being a Republican.
It's like, if you don't show people what the boundaries are, they're going to act as though there aren't any boundaries. And there won't be anything you can do about it.

I strongly suspect a lot of the folks, including Ace, posting here have paid their dues for conservative principals and for this country. I have disagreed with Ace on a few occasions including this one early in the thread but he is absolutely one of the good guys, dickheads.
When all this crap started out a few days ago and Scozzafava bowed out it looked like she might have had a little dignity. Turns out we were wrong. So what. I also suspect there are far more capable minds here ready and willing to come to Ace's defence, not that he needs it. STFU.

I'll repost it here, for those who aren't aware of Newt's smear:
"According to Gingrich, Hoffman DOES NOT LIVE in New York's 23rd congressional district"
And this is just another reason you should be angry at Gingrich.
1) Hoffman lived in the 23rd for years, and he never moved. The 23rd left -him- in the 2000 redistricting. Do you seriously think that, if you live in a district, and then someone changes the shape of the district to exclude your house in an effort to gerrymander the district, that you are a "carpetbagger"? Really?
2) If so, then Gingrich is the worst sort of hypocrite, because a very similar thing happened to him in 1992 (in his case, Georgia picked up an extra seat in the House as a result of the 1990 census), which changed the districts around, and he thus also ran in a district he didn't technically live in.
3) Gingrich either knew this, which makes him both disingenuous and a hypocrite, or he was easily conned by a liberal masquerading as a Republican. Since this was discovered and published all over conservative blogs a few days after he attacked Hoffman, and I never heard Newt own up to it, I'm gonna go with the former. If I just missed it and he did apologize for the smear, well, then he's just responsible for vastly expanding the reach of a Democrat smear without checking the facts.
And this is his only mistake? Please. How about carrying water for Nancy Pelosi on the entire global warming trojan horse for socialism nonsense? This is hardly the first time Gingrich has abandoned principle for power. Thankfully, he'll wind up with neither."

As long as the rest of America uses NYC as a measure of all things Enlightened then schizophrenia is certain to follow. For example; Independent Moderate life-long Democrat turned Republican turned Independent Bloom berg said he 'saved and created jobs'; how very moderate and independent of him. Liberal Thompson has shown us there is a war going on between certain constituencies around this town nobody is talking about.
America, if you think you're going to find answers to difficult questions from anywhere in the NE quardrant you are wrong; the NE is crazy fruit-loops.
There is a good reason why the real taxpayers are fleeing this crazy insane land for better ground; the insane asylum patients are in charge and the only cure for these insane people is misery and pain.
