ISRAEL last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed.The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.
It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.
Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.
But last night's direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh, a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.

I think it is safe to tell you that the shuttle is used for a few things more important than photo ops.
The Hubble's main camera is broken.
There are military use satellites that constantly need attention to keep things in tiptop shape.
There are also intelligence sats up there.
The last two are not likely to be announced as part of mission at any press briefings.
Especially considering the New York Slimes, eh?

Hubble repair is a primary mission, bright boy. It's not a pit stop on the way to the ISS. And not one military nor intelligence satellite has ever been "repaired" by NASA. Actually, most of the time they're not repaired at all, to any degree, by anything. They're simply replaced.

Megan, how is this a photo op? The STS-121 flight is a test flight and resupply mission to the ISS. If we want to complete the construction of the ISS, we need to fly a whole shitload of equipment up there, including additional scientific labs, crew space modules and solar panels to power the station. There's a lot of things that can be accomplished in zero G that can't be done here on Earth. I'm not very happy how NASA has conducted themselves in the past but this is an incredibly critical mission. If anything goes wrong, you can kiss human spaceflight goodbye for the foreseeable future.

In order to learn how to survive in space, we have to actually do it. The ISS is a pretty lame program in a lot of ways, but it isn't worthless. Ya done got me, Bart. I've always said that the ISS was a mistake to begin with and I think it should go into the Pacific. Imagine the cruise ship industry taking advantage! A week in Bora Bora and the biggest fucking fireball you've ever seen! Seriously tho, call it a mental defect or something but for me, it's not about money, it's about human nature and exploration. NASA gets less than 1 percent of the Federal budget. That ain't shit compared to what the wide variety of the social services get. Hubble repair is a primary mission, bright boy. It's not a pit stop on the way to the ISS. And not one military nor intelligence satellite has ever been "repaired" by NASA. Actually, most of the time they're not repaired at all, to any degree, by anything. They're simply replaced.

And just to re-emphasize the point: sending a freakin' space shuttle out to fix a satellite is simply ridiculous. It's like calling your entire family together every time you hit a golf ball off the course, piling into an SUV, and driving into the trees. You either go look for the ball yourself (ie, fix the satellite remotely or rely on backups - all satellites have always been designed with at least two complete systemic failures in mind) or you take out a new golf ball.
The most decrepit and primitive manned shuttle in the world is still orders of magnitude more complex than the most advanced satellite in the world. The most expensive satellite launch in the world is still far, far cheaper than the least expensive manned shuttle launch in the world.

Megan, NASA is in a box. Everyone, including the current director, recognizes that the shuttle did not pan out--the mission expectations and the economics were way off; the underlying technology is now unstable *and* old; plus the ISS was a croc and ate up more money--so the strategic downside of giving up manned deep-space exploration was amplified by the inherent flaws of the alternatives chosen. And NASA operates as a bureaucracy within larger bureaucracies and Congressional political/budget cycles impose another layer of irrationality on the system.
So here we are. But we can't just throw up our hands and walk away. We have to keep on flying--the plan is to transit to a new launch system and s-can the ISS; until then America tries to ekk out whatever incremental value there is left in the platforms previous errors left us.

I don't know why everyone has their britches in a twist over shuttle crashes. Back in the early 80's when I was a young whelp engineer at Rockwell, we all knew the chances were approx 1:100 for a "total loss of vehicle and crew" on any given mission.
This was understood - a given. The astronauts knew it, NASA knew it. The only ones who didn't know it were the public that NASA was feeding a line of BS to.

Did Israel win their war with the Palestinians in three weeks flat? Because I thought that they were still fighting a war of perpetuity with them after 50 odd years. Shows what I know. Darned liberal media.
Should we really be looking to Israel as a model of conflict resolution? If so why?

No Slough, we shouldn't look to Israel as a model of conflict resolution. Israel has shown entirely too much restraint in dealing with the islamonuters.
