IRS Exposes Thousands of Social Security Numbers Online
— Ace

The numbers released publicly were those associated with 527 organizations, another type of tax-exempt political organization.

Per Wikipedia:

A 527 organization or 527 group is a type of U.S. tax-exempt organization organized under Section 527 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code (26 U.S.C. § 527). A 527 group is created primarily to influence the selection, nomination, election, appointment or defeat of candidates to federal, state or local public office.

Technically, almost all political committees, including state, local, and federal candidate committees, traditional political action committees, "Super PACs", and political parties are "527s." However, in common practice the term is usually applied only to such organizations that are not regulated under state or federal campaign finance laws because they do not "expressly advocate" for the election or defeat of a candidate or party.

When the IRS makes 527 information public (which they must, per the law), they're supposed to scrub out sensitive information like Social Security numbers. But the gang that couldn't shoot straight (unless they're aiming at the Tea Party) failed to do this in thousands of case.

I'd be curious to know if the exposure of sensitive information (setting someone up for identity theft or worse) was purely random, affecting all sorts of different 527s, or if it's mostly conservative leaning ones who were abused by this latest case of malnegligence* by the IRS.

* Made up the word. They're incompetent, but their incompetence often tends to have a malign bend to it.

56 Why would a 527 group have a Social Security Number on the first place?  They're not eligible to collect SS benefits.

The linked article isn't very specific but I'll bet it actually means that Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) were exposed.  TINs aren't exactly a secret.  Anyone who pays money to certain categories of organizations or persons (and wants a deduction for the payment) has to collect the TIN of the organization to whom the money was paid.  Form W-9 is a Request for TIN that you send to the organization that you are about to pay so you have that info for the IRS.

Exposing TINs doesn't seem like a big a deal, unless there's more to it.

Eh 527s and most other Tax Sheltered groups require the social security numbers of officers in the organization that have access to moneyflow for "forensic datamining purposes in case of investigation."

I'm betting they did not redact officer data.

I'm also betting that the 527s that somehow weren't redacted don't have "Progressive" in their name...

The incompetence is the point.   The first principle from which all liberalism flows is a belief in the omniscience and (hence) omnicompetence of government agencies.   The first principle of conservatism (at least Hayekian economic conservatism) is that government agencies can never know enough to be able to direct a command economy (which is what Obamacare is essentially trying to do with the health sector, an economy that would be larger than all but a handful of first-world countries).   The daily stories of incompetence from the Obama administration proves that we're right and they're wrong.

The IRS is deliberately dumbing down 527 tax returns to prevent "too much scrutiny"...

there's 1.5 trillion of activity by 527s and 527s engage in LAVISH payola schemes....

In terms of breakage though, the truly big problem is the deliberate dumbing down of tax returns for large nonprofits in order to avoid what an IRS official actually said to us would be "too much transparency." All the big nonprofits have to e-file their tax returns. E-filing means they submit actual machine-processable data encoded in XML.

102 I think I'll stay with nonfeasance and and malfeasance.
off topic but wanted to mention a dumb email from dumb Sen Gillibrand:

"Voting is our right as Americans, but the Supreme Court's ruling that effectively struck down the Voting Rights Act jeopardizes that right for millions of us.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court asserted that the Act’s practice of identifying states with a history of voter discrimination has "no logical relationship to the present day,” – even after extremist state legislatures spent the last three years trying to mandate state IDs, gerrymander districts and cancel early voting.

With the Voting Rights Act gutted, Republican lawmakers are vowing to reinstate previously unconstitutional voter ID laws, which make it disproportionally harder for seniors, students, minorities and those of low-income households to vote."

(Haven't the courts ruled in general that voter ID laws are constitutional? There's a Constitutional right to early voting? It's that hard to get some sort of ID? This kind of thing really scares the Dems... which is a good thing.)

I think it was someone here who told the story last election of a woman who claimed that she didn't have a photo ID (in whichever state it was that passed an ID law, but a judge delayed it; so the poll workers had to ask, but couldn't actually require it...), ended up leaving the polling place without voting as a result, and drove off in her SUV.

Probably badly.  I've read more than one story that involves the realization that someone's SSN number has gone out into the wild only for the victim to be unable to get any further information about what's going on due to "privacy concerns".  In short, "Yes, that's your SSN.  No, we can't tell you what someone else is doing with it.  That would violate privacy."

When I was going to kollidge, I used to make money during the summer by working in a freight yard for the B and O in Baltimore.  When a train going through the yard would drop off a string of cars on a siding, the air brakes would lock up so they couldn't be moved.  Guys from the yard office called car knockers used to go out and bleed them so that the cars could be sorted by a yard engine crew to where their final destination would be.  I think when the cars are released a valve keeps the pressure up and locks the brakes because if you bleed them you can't be magically adding pressure.  That's just a guess on my part on how thing work but it has to be something mechanically simple because they've used it since at least the 19th century.

186 175 ThunderB,

and an intelligent GOP would be attacking Democrats from Union districts and laying seeds of discontent with the CBC...

of course I used the words "intelligent" and "gop"....

essentially if/when Amigo Grande passes the 1st, 2d, 4th, and 5th Amndmt's go adios amigo...

at that point we're fucked.

but hey at least the chamber of commerce and Paul Fucking Ryan will be Bueno

187 Remember he said they would block an appointee or something if the administration would handover some docs or witnesses on Benghazi?

188 182 I thought they ALWAYS targeted Issa. But he keeps turning them into a joke during the campaign. Posted by: UWP at July 08, 2013 09:19 PM (r98SZ) It still has an effect. Unchallenged lies + MFM + academia + fraud = way more power than they should have, and we've seen what they do with it.

Issa and the rest of the Repubs have to start sending people to jail.  This horseshit of holding people in contempt doesn't mean a fucking thing to the donk jizzmops; in fact they brag about it to their dumbass constituents.  The commiecrats play for blood which is why Scooter Libbey went to jail even though he didn't do a fucking thing wrong.  Until people like Boehner realize that being Mr Nice Guy doesn't cut it, we'll keep getting rolled.

190 I could see Issa trading a vote he wants to make anyway for a witness or a document he really wants

Posted by: Thunderb at July 08, 2013 04:27 PM (zOTsN)

191 Issa almost turned Cali into a split electoral vote state whereby electoral votes of cali would almost cancel each other out. He also almost wins at horseshoes. So.

194 I like how the Public.Resource post ends: "It is time now for the administration to send a tiger team over to the I.R.S. to help fix their information management practices." Righto. A bit of bother, you know. Bit of a snafu. But the President's on the trail now, and the administration will set it right as rain, posthaste. Apparently the last six months of scandals and hearings never happened. Their faith might be touching if it didn't leave the rest of us so screwed.

This is deliberate and nothing but a threat.  Drop this investigation or we will release more detrimental information on citizens.  The arrogance of this agency and the obama aministration is mind boggling.
