— Ace Once again, it turns out that a story that could have been written at any time over the past six months is only ready for printing on a Saturday.
Funny how it always works out like that.
Analysis: US now winning Iraq war that seemed lost...
Limited, sometimes sharp fighting and periodic terrorist bombings in Iraq are likely to continue, possibly for years. But the Iraqi government and the U.S. now are able to shift focus from mainly combat to mainly building the fragile beginnings of peace a transition that many found almost unthinkable as recently as one year ago.
Despite the occasional bursts of violence, Iraq has reached the point where the insurgents, who once controlled whole cities, no longer have the clout to threaten the viability of the central government.
That does not mean the war has ended or that U.S. troops have no role in Iraq. It means the combat phase finally is ending, years past the time when President Bush optimistically declared it had. The new phase focuses on training the Iraqi army and police, restraining the flow of illicit weaponry from Iran, supporting closer links between Baghdad and local governments, pushing the integration of former insurgents into legitimate government jobs and assisting in rebuilding the economy.
Scattered battles go on, especially against al-Qaida holdouts north of Baghdad. But organized resistance, with the steady drumbeat of bombings, kidnappings, assassinations and ambushes that once rocked the capital daily, has all but ceased.
This amounts to more than a lull in the violence. It reflects a fundamental shift in the outlook for the Sunni minority, which held power under Saddam Hussein. They launched the insurgency five years ago. They now are either sidelined or have switched sides to cooperate with the Americans in return for money and political support.
Also, there were no US casualties in Iraq this past week. (Knock wood.)
Meanwhile, it remains NBCNews official, carefully-considered, expert-informed opinion that Iraq is in a state of Civil War.
Note the MSNBC's correspendent's prognosis -- the fact the NBC, and soon the MSM, would call the situation in Iraq a "civil war" would have a great political impact, and would increase the urgency for a withdrawal.
Funny how NBC isn't able to make these "gutsy" semantic decisions when the political impact might run in the opposite direction.
Insiders expect NBC to revisit this carefully-considered, expert-informed opinion two hours after Barack Obama wins the presidency.
If he doesn't win -- the Civil War rages on, baby!

Now, can we roll tanks into Mexico and do the same thing.....
Pretty soon, all that will be left there is drug kingpins and corrupt polititians that own all the Oil wells.
This time, though, we get to pump their oil and sell it to pay for it

I liked how the AP analysis perpetuated not one but two lies: that Bush "declared Mission Accomplished" and that Bush said there would be no more combat.
The sad thing is, I don't think they even do it on purpose. They really are this biased.

I refuse to click the video and ruin my Saturday. But I will observe that the cocksucker on the right looks like he is really enjoying delivering the tragic news that Iraq is in a civil war, and in a similar vein I would enjoy watching someone kick him in the groin. Very hard. Isn't that pretty much what NBC and most of the rest of the MSM has done to America and her brave military for the last 7 years?
I can't threaten to boycott NBC because I already do and have for a long time, but let's just say it will be a cold day in hell when I buy anything that says "GE" on it again, okay?

From the AP article: "...It means the combat phase finally is ending, years past the time when President Bush optimistically declared it had...."
I recall Bush saying that major combat operations were over, not that the combat phase as a whole was finished. Bush was referring to the invasion and mopping up. In that sense, he was correct.

Who the hell cares what it "reports" anymore? Sure, there's the news serving the masses component, and it's become rote to ridicule it's, um, nuance in gathering a story, but really. Except for noting its methodologic style, it's really to the point of just ignoring it.
It was dishonest before now. It doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt now either. It's an untrustworthy source. Period. End of story.

He said that "hundreds of thousands" of troops more were needed above and beyond what was already in theater. This is the type of analysis Rumsfeld was up against as SecDef in handling modern warfare.
Not a few thousand or few tens of thousands... hundreds of thousands with intervention into every crevice of the country.
That analysis was beyond mere suspect. It was spectacularly wrong. A small, focal bump in personnel with, and this was vital, an altering of ROE was what was necessary, not some Normandy invasion.

When Ronaldus Magnus was President all we heard about was the homeless people. During the Clinton years they disappeared. TWO DAYS after Bush won the election I heard a newz report about "The Homeless Problem".
The MSM will declare victory in Iraq during the second week of November.
Oh yeah- and the "recession" will madjikally end, with unemployment "Plunging" to around 5% and the GNP "skyrocketing" to about 3 or 4.
Yeah- that's right- I'm psychic. Print this and save it for later verification.

When William Jefferson Clinton was President all we heard about was Beaver. Ironically, during the Bush years, they disappeared.

Big E: "the libs have decided that declaring the war over benefits Captain Bullshit so badda bing it's over we won"
As this sly sentence suggests: "The questions will take on greater importance as the U.S. presidential election nears, with one candidate pledging a troop withdrawal and the other insisting on staying."
Sure sounds to me like smoothing the way for Senator "I am right even when I'm wr- No, I can't say it, I can do no wr- ... I am right even when I'm right."

How artfully Bush is airbrushed from this picture of success!
Who authorized the suddenly marvelous surge way back when it polled super badly? Who stuck to it when wiser heads (Barack Obama, for example) shook their heads at the presidential stupidity? Why, it must have been Fate-- fate and the Wizard Obama, using his famous "for it even when I'm against it" future-healing retromagic.
Bush merits only a sneer for his optimism: "the combat phase finally is ending, years past the time when President Bush optimistically declared it had.
Leaving aside that nobody in 03 could see into the future (well, nobody but The All-Knowing One), what Bush said was:
"major combat operations in Iraq have ended. ... And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country. ...We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We're bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous. ... we will stand with the new leaders of Iraq as they establish a government of, by and for the Iraqi people. The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done and then we will leave and we will leave behind a free Iraq."
