Idiotic Friday Night "The Other One" Update: Kaine Is Out. Probably Bayh Too.
— DrewM

Here's the latest...

Obama Spokeswoman and part time reporter Andrea Mitchell says Bayh and Kaine are out (FNC is also reporting Kaine is out).

So all eyes are turning to Joe Biden! Thanks to Dave in Texas, you can watch CNN stakeout of his home.

The talk is now that Obama won't be sending out The Text until Saturday morning.

It's amazing how much millage the Obama people are getting out of this. It's a quality product roll out, no doubt about it. But at the end of all this hype and interest you wind up with...Joe Biden?

No VP nominee has made much of a difference since, what? L.B.J.? I'm sure Biden or whoever winds up on the ticket will keep that sting intact but at least Biden will be fun.

UPDATE: If you missed it earlier in the week, take a look at Jack M.'s thoughts on a possible Obama-Biden ticket.

UPDATE x2: The Weekly Standard says their source tells them it's Biden.

On behalf of Republicans and bloggers and co-bloggers everywhere, let me be the first to say...THANK YOU Barack!

UPDATE x3: The Secret Service is reported to en route to the Biden's home to establish their protective detail. Alas, they won't be able to protect him from his big mouth.

UPDATE x4 [Dave in Texas]: McCain camp launches Biden ad (via HotAir)

Cool Facts about Joe Biden

1) Joe's oratorical skills were favorably compared to the guy he plagiarized.

2) What do Joe Biden and Dick Cheney have in common?   They've both fucked Joe Biden over.

3)  What color is Joe Biden's MBNA card?  Whatever color MBNA decides to give him.

10 Biden was one of the first to endorse Obama. ("He's clean, articulate.") Sometimes he's a jerk, sometimes he can be astute, but he can't stop being politically incorrect. If he won't pick Hillary, I hope he picks Biden. I can use a laugh.

11 It's a massive head fake. Why the hell would there be flights to and activity at the VP's house the night before? To help him pack?
Can you ever remember a VP nominee who had all this activity before?
Why go to all the trouble to keep it under wraps and then pull an OJ Simpson chase?

12 So after all the Kos Kids' orgasms over no MSM leaks, and them and the faithful being the first to know, Obama waited long enough with the text message for it to be leaked out. Change you can believe in.

24 Is Biden really that bad a pick?  Hugh Hewitt is praying for Biden.  But on the surface, he sounds smart and competent.  He may reassure a segment of people almost willing to support Obama.  He talks a good game.  Below the surface, he's a boob, but so is Obama.  I think he's Obama's best bet, if HRC is out, is Biden, no?  Analysis please...?

Also, does this promote or demote Romney?  I think it promotes him relative to Pawlenty; with bland Bayh, Pawlenty's blandness wouldn't have  been as apparent.

Posted by: Dr. Chopper at August 22, 2008 05:12 PM (20dUP)

34 The problem I have with (well...the awesome thing about) Biden is that Obama has close states that he has the option to take somebody from.  Kaine, for one, obviously being the Governor of Virgina, but also Bayh, being a former governor - they have a lot more contacts in a state and can really pull strings.  Now, Indiana is starting to swerve more towards McCain, but Obama could really use Virginia or Indiana - he's tossing that away.  Who cares about Delaware?

He also leaves an opening for McCain to pick a woman and turn the table on him with this identity politics stuff.  Beyond that, though, pundits are talking about experience, but how many regular people have heard of Joe Biden?  I can't believe there's anybody who's not going to vote for Obama who will decide Biden's experience makes a difference.

There's also the long history of gaffes to delve into (and play for everybody), which I assume will continue.

Even minor stuff - just this week he said "I'm not the guy" in response to the VP question. If somebody has that on video that's a clip you could have fun with.

Posted by: AD at August 22, 2008 05:15 PM (8mGNb)

35 Mare, no, he doesn't sound smart and competent to me, but he does pull off a certain oratory that one  associates with pre-post-most intelligence.  I'm just trying to get into the mind of people who, for whatever reason (probably IQ), aren't scared shitless of Obama!

46 For each Obama choice, there's a logical McCain counterstroke: Obama picks Kaine: McCain takes Pawlenty. Obama goes for Bayh: McCain counters with Romney. Obama chooses Biden: McCain has to double down on Palin. But if Obama selects Hillary, McCain's only two logical responses are Rudy or Lieberman. Neither of which would make the base very happy....

80 I'm stunned. Maybe the speculation that his first picks said no is right.
Biden is a deal maker, he had to ask for something. I didn't think Obama would go with having to make promises just to get a VP.

Posted by: Rocks at August 22, 2008 06:12 PM (7rbe9)

81 The commenters on Tapper's ABC site are not very happy.  Most saying it's a bad pick.

And of course, the whiners:

What a joke about his supporters knowing first. What a joke. I'm really disappointed and feel like I got sucked into nothing but a marketing campaign. Unless he pulls Al Gore out of retirement, this process has been really disappointing and has actually eroded my trust in Obama.

I don't know much about Biden, but he comes across arrogant and loves to hear himself talk. I'm hoping I can push that aside and look at this new ticket objectively, but right now, I think this whole campaign was a huge mistake to lead the American people, most importantly, his supporters on like this.

So much for being the first to know.

85 I think Purple Avenger is correct here - the chief criteria for Obama are:
1. Someone who'll look superficially impressive to the morons that stupid Constitution says have to be allowed to vote before The One's coronation.
2. Someone who, in fact, is *not* at all impressive, and has no chance of becoming a threat to the Messiah or looking like a viable substitute for Him.

Biden makes sense - he's a buffoon, but the rubes are too stupid to figure that out.

120 Biden chides competitors on foreign policy experience.

"The reason I was surprised by what not only Senator Obama said, but what Senator Clinton said and Senator Dodd said, is that all three of them seemed to be arguing about something that they didn't know already existed. It is the policy of the United States of America, it has been the policy for the last five years; if there's actionable intelligence relating to bin Laden or Al Qaeda, that we would move, assuming we're able to move, against him," Mr. Biden said. "The part that surprised me was the lack of knowledge about this and the idea that you wouldn't take action if you knew where bin Laden was."

Mr. Biden added that Mr. Obama's proposal to make American aid to Pakistan conditional on progress in fighting Al Qaeda is already in legislation. Mr. Biden drafted an amendment to a bill passed by Congress in July and awaiting the signature of President Bush. "That's the Biden-Lantos amendment," Mr. Biden said. "It exists now, so the thing that startled me was the fact that here these three people are arguing about whether we should go in or not go in or how to go in, the first thing that surprised me is it took so long for them to focus on Pakistan.

...

While Mr. Biden supports a plan to devolve control of Iraq into three different sectors, Kurdish, Shiite and Sunni, and helped draft the "Levin-Reed Amendment" on redeployment of American forces from Iraq,

...

One example he cited was the call for an immediate withdrawal of American armed forces from Iraq. "The fact of the matter is, it's physically impossible logistically to remove 160,000 forces from the area in less than a year, and even if you leave all the equipment behind, which will later be used to shoot at us and kill us in other places, you're talking about a 10-month time frame."

141 You know this morning I decided to do my own experiment.  On the way to work, nothing on the radio but constant chatter about everyone keeping their cell phone close due to the "special" text message from the Messiah!.  My drive to work, was station after station, that's all... we are going to be waitin for the text.  Well I decided to pull a prank at work to the most loyal democrat idealogues who's sphincter's were the size of ant's ass waitin for the text from the exalted one..  I sent a text msg where I spoofed a text message from the Messiah's web site indicating that the VP pick was Hillary.

What happened next was amazing.... in a very arrogant manner this person announced to the office that he received a text message indicating that Hillary was the pick.  The office proceeded to have a spontaneous celebration that finally the democrats have realized that enough was enough and that the Clinton's were going to put Obama over the top.  That led to an email broadcasting the announcement that this fellow was the first to receive the txt msg which led to phone calls to his family and friends.  That's when I decided after precisely 2 minutes into this celebration, that enough was enough.  I sent another spoofed txt msg indicating it was Robert Byrd.  Well... that caused a shit storm of another email message retracting the Hillary announcement  and  blaming the  previous  announcement that the republicans hacked into the Obama website.

What is the point of all of this... the realization that Obamican's realize that Hillary was their only hope to reclaim the White House.

har har.  Granted, she comes across as a pretty smart lady lately.  I think it's unfair to credit her with Mondale's disaster, but she obviously gets no kudos either.

At least Sergei had some fun with this.  Obama had expectations up, and wound up going with the most predictable choice.  And he picked an arrogant asshole.

All Obama had was his judgment being better than everyone else's experience... yet his only judgment beyond 'present'x130 was that Iraq was a bad idea... now he's picked one who authroized Iraq.  Prominently.

I think Romney and Biden would just be a big fight... Romney would win arguments, but perhaps only in my book.  I think Mccain has plenty of room to pick someone more interesting if he wants.  Not that it matters.  I don't think he could possibly pick worse than Biden.  I hope he taps some complete Washington Outsider... a true business leader like Meg or Carli, or an interesting Governor.

Oh man, I waited all day to heasr it was Biden?  Obama was chuckling about his super cool secret all week... and it was Biden?

Ask yourselves this:  How would Paris Hilton tell Ashton Kutcher who her VP choice was?  SMS message, perhaps?  And what would Paris's stage look like at the convention?  Kinda like the DNC's?  How would Paris deal with a strong opponent like Hillary?  Passive Aggressive cold shoulder?

I would have loved to see the Sergei prank in person. So what happened to the endless assurances, even from conservatives, that Barry was so intelligent and sharp? So savvy with the branding and marketing? I would know as advertising is my field. Who was he kidding with this stupid SMS messaging stunt? Just because you have fancy tech toys doesn't mean you can use them to perform brain surgery or alter the political landscape like a game of WoW. I'm telling you, in advertising the support for Obambi is nearly universal... and it's all about brand and image. You never hear issues discussed, only how to sell him, as if he were a Prius or a sausage or cable TV service. The only additional frisson of cool is the moral superiority of "being politically engaged." On the left side, of course.

188 McCain cannot pick Rudy.  He cannot pick a pro-choice candidate, even though the fact is that it doesn't matter very much.

I would really like to see Palin in there.  Or Steele.  Or anyone who is actually a conservative who would still stir the identity politics pot because I think it's good strategy.  I would much rather she were the presidential candidate, but perhaps as VP she will be well-positioned for a presidential bid.

BTW, nice to see wickedpinto is back. I haven't had the time to hang out in the comments lately, so I didn't know.

194 McCain would be insane if he picked a pro-choice VP. Didn't Rudy's flameout teach him that? The base is the engine of this bus and if the guy driving isn't correct on the life issue, that bus ain't moving.

I'm pro-choice, but I understand that pro-choice R's are the minority in this party. Really, being pro-life is a litmus test for me in the sense that someone who's pro-life tends to be right on all the other issues that I care deeply about. (Huckabee excepted)

Posted by: nightwitch at August 22, 2008 11:39 PM (dfTf5)

195 I guess I should've said that a pro-choice VP doesn't matter that much from a policy standpoint as the VP traditionally has almost nothing to say with respect to policy.  However, from a philisophical standpoint McCain cannot have a pro-choice VP.

I consider myself reluctantly pro-choice.  I think it's a devil's bargain, but the genie is already out of the bottle.  But I would really like the issue to be thrown back to the states and out of the Fed's hands so it wouldn't be a nationwide issue any more.

202 cranky, I have a touchy feel on the abortion issue myself.  I hate abortions inherently, but I too think it should be up to the states.

Regardless, Mccain needs turnout... that's what won Bush two terms.  He needs a fired up base.  A pro-choice candidate would cost him tons of votes.  I have no idea what Giuliani gives Mccain that Mccain doesn't already have.  Mccain commanded large units.  He's been very able as a chairman.  He's a senator, but the lack of executive experience isn't a huge problem because few people see Mccain as unable to lead.  Giuliani is a great security stye leader, but Mccain is too.  I also doubt very much that Giuliani would make huge dents in blue states, being that Mccain is even more moderate than Rudy.

Lieberman is right out, I sure as hell hope.

What I think would help change the game is a bit of breaking identity politics.  A lady veep would tick off a few people on the right (no kidding, there are a couple of idiots on our side, and my in-laws are two of 'em).

If only Sarah Palin had more experience, I'd be happy with the choice.  But can Biden really challenge Palin on this point?  It would be gaffe bait to nominate her.  My real problem with Palin is the concern that she's not really ready for the job, being so inexperienced.  But this is a touch election that has to be fought hard.  If Palin polls well, I think she's a great pick to balance against old-school jerk-off Biden.

Exactly how I feel and I bet most other pro-choice cons feel the same way. That's why McCain would be committing electoral suicide to pick a squish on the life issue. If being pro-choice is your passion and you want to be in the driver's seat, there's a party for you already and it isn't the republicans.

219 In an earlier thread, I mentioned that the other day, I had dinner with my sister, the sane Obama supporter. We chatted about our respective VP candidates. She was intrigued by Palin, in part because of her sex but also because of her being a fiscal conservative: I think everybody with an ounce of sense in both parties knows that the party's over and it's time to sit down and make some tough financial decisions.

When I asked her about Biden, she just shook her head. Biden is no Ted Stevens, but he's a pretty good example of what's wrong with Congress. He brings nothing to the ticket, and he completely negates the Obamessiah's yammerings about Hope and Change.

This clearly is another of Obama's rookie mistakes. Now, if McCain would only pick Palin, I'd be one happy guy.

Uhhh... West Virginians keep sending Jay Fucking Rockefeller back to the Senate.  What a schizophrenic state I live in... Bush wins by 13 points in '04 but KKK Byrd, Rockadollar, instant millionaire Mollohan (who was under investigation until Nancy Peloony became Speaker of the House), and Baghdad Nick Rahall keep getting sent back to Washington.  And who's governor with 90% probability of getting reelected in November?  Democrat Joe Manchin, who somehow managed to sustain only minimal damage this year when his daughter was in the middle of a messy scandal involving the award of an unearned MBA by the state's flagship university.  Nonetheless, the shizoid voting pattern will continue this year as McCain, Manchin, Mollohan, and Rahall win the state.

Probably a double post because my Air Force comm nazi's block a lot of traffic from this site, but I wanted to post an excerpt from an old column of Jonah Goldberg's. Every time I see Biden I think of this column (Jonah also posted this on the corner):

He says interesting things, from time to time. I think he makes a fair point here and there. He was correct, for example, that Congress needed to have a real deabte over the war. I think he has some obvious verbal intelligence. But, again, what's fascinating — and what might be distracting some folks from seeing his underlying-yet-occassional smarts — is that he lets his ego and vanity get in the way. The man loves his voice so much, you'd expect him to be following it around in a grey Buick, in defiance of restraining order, as it walks home from school. He seems to think his teeth are some kind of hypnotic punctuation marks which can momentarily disorient the listener and absolve him from any of Western civilization's usual imperatives to stop talking. Listening to him speechify is like playing an intellectual game of whack-a-mole where every now and then the fuzzy head of a good point pops up from the tundra but before you can pin it down, he starts talking about how he went to the store and saw a squirrel on the way and it was brown which brings to mind Brown V. Board of Ed which most people don't understand because [TEETH FLASH] he taught Brown in his law school course and [TEETH FLASH] Mr. Chairman I'm going to get right to it and besides these aren't the droids you're looking for..

All you need to know about New Jersey is this: the toll booths for the Delaware river bridges are on the Delaware side. Thus, it's free to enter new Jersey, but you have to pay to get out. Which thousands of people gleefully do every day.

Posted by: Blue hen at August 23, 2008 08:33 AM (rSo39)

247 I don't understand this conservative need to be politically correct. If you were to make up a list of all the Americans who could step into the job of President of the United States tomorrow and have most Americans be confident he could do a reasonably good job from day one, Jindal, Palin and Steele would not be on that list. An old Washington hand like Biden knows where the levers of power are and something about their limits. He's watched the executive branch at work for 36 years now. I think McCain loves America too much to put someone a heartbeat away from the Presidency who isn't ready. So who does McCain think is ready to to be President of the United States?

Also if McCain picks someone inexperienced to run with, he will be discarding his main message of today. How would he ask "Is Obama ready to lead?" if his VP has the same problem? Purely a practical effect but maybe the McCain camp can sometimes be practical too.

Yes. Unfortunately, he spent those 36 years grasping those levers for himself and himself only. he may have watched the Executive Branch, but he has scant respect for it or for its role. His games during the confirmation hearing proves this.

You also neglected the fact that this flies in the face of the "hope and Change" that the Obama campaign is supposedly about.
